View Full Version : Uhm, PS3 or X360? And what games for either?
Swein Forkbeard Apr 06, 2008, 06:22 PM Currently I'm thinking a PS3, since I've heard about a pathetic disease that can penetrate a 360 without warning. Here are some of the games that I would like to play on them. Which ones would you recommend?
ICO
Shadow of the Colossus
Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec
Gran Turismo 4
Gran Turismo 5: Prologue
Guitar Hero
Guitar Hero II
Rock Band
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Burnout 3: Takedown
Jak II
Jak 3
Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando
Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal
Civilization: Revolution
Uhm, bye.
azzaman333 Apr 07, 2008, 12:59 AM PS3 if you want BluRay, XBox360 otherwise.
GoodEnoughForMe Apr 07, 2008, 02:13 AM That's a lot of PS2 games? Do you have a PS2?
Otherwise, PS3. The best games on the 360 (Bioshock, Orange Box, COD: IV, Oblivion, Gears, Mass Effect, etc.) are rated M.
Plus, PS3 will have FF XIII, Kingdom Hearts, Tekken, more exclusive sports games, grab the Ratchet PS3 game, etc.
Sullla Apr 07, 2008, 08:16 AM Wow, what a strange post, Swein. Because based on this list:
ICO
Shadow of the Colossus
Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec
Gran Turismo 4
Guitar Hero
Guitar Hero II
Rock Band
Burnout 3: Takedown
Jak II
Jak 3
Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando
Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal
It sounds like the platform you want is a PS2, not a PS3. Keep in mind that most of the current PS3s on the market have limited or no backwards compatibility, so you will not be able to play many of these games on a new PS3. You also have cost to consider; a PS3 will run you at least $400, while PS2s are absolutely dirt cheap today ($120 new, probably $50 used).
Now if money is no issue (your parents are buying you a big gift, most likely) then it sounds like the PS3 is a better choice for you than the 360. Of the three games you listed that only appear on current (seventh) generation consoles:
Gran Turismo 5: Prologue
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Civilization: Revolution
Two of the three are exclusive to the PS3. (Civ Revolutions will be on both.) The two big advantages of the 360 are its cheaper cost, and XBox Live online service. However, if money is no issue and you won't be playing online, then the PS3 is probably a better deal for you.
I still say a simple PS2 is the best option of all, since 12 of the 15 games you listed are on that platform, most of them exclusively. :)

GH II is on X360, too. But why not just GH III for either one? Rock Band probably on both.
I own both of the two consoles, and like PS3 more. X360 has broken down twice. One was the infamous Red Ring of Death and now the DVD drive has problems playing any disks.
t0mme Apr 07, 2008, 08:57 AM Just curious, why not the first Jak and Daxter and the first Ratchet and Clank? Is it because IGN rated both the first installments worse than it sequels?
(J&D1 only got a 94 and J&D2 and J&D3 95 and 96 respectively)
Kozmos Apr 07, 2008, 02:17 PM How is Xbox Live an advantage? It is paid, while the PSN is free.
GoodEnoughForMe Apr 07, 2008, 02:40 PM Because right now Xbox Live is actually an online package while the PS3 just has a mismatch of online gaming, still no Home, and no achievements yet.
Kozmos Apr 07, 2008, 04:07 PM Umm, no. As far as I can see, PSN has got pretty much the same features as Xbox Live with the Home thingy launching this year. Achievements? **** hats, which you cant do anything with. The Home thing is pretty much the same.
GoodEnoughForMe Apr 07, 2008, 04:13 PM Achievements are really good for bragging rights and competing with friends. Right now Live is simply better and has more features then the the PSN. Whenever Home comes out though Live might be in a bit of trouble, because Home looks excellent.
Kozmos Apr 07, 2008, 05:21 PM Both look really useless to me. The last thing I feel like doing is bragging about video games or making virtual avatars of myself. (been there, done that times 30) Meh before I might have cared, but I've kinda grown past that. Real life ftw.
Swein Forkbeard Apr 07, 2008, 06:01 PM It's just a pathetic Christmas wish. Blah.

If you didn't want advice, why did you create this thread topic? Honestly, I don't understand you sometimes, Swein...
Civfan333 Apr 08, 2008, 08:03 PM even though Swein just did this for some pathetic christmas wish, I would get a 360......I mean, just look at the games.......I know, most of the games are M but still........

That's hardly fair, especially given that the PS3 came out a year later and the greater number of games doesn't mean more good games for the 360.
Civfan333 Apr 08, 2008, 08:40 PM I know, I'm just saying where to look to find what games you want.....
sir_schwick Apr 10, 2008, 08:50 AM I think everyone here is forgetting about Warhawk for PS3. It was originally a PS1 game, but I really consider it a spiritual successor to BF1942. Why do I say that, because unlike the other BF sequels; Warhawk is kinda silly, really intuitive vehicles that balance well, and most important it is just fun. Also thanks to PSN, getting into games does not take forever like with Live. Plus it has jeeps so let all the mayhem begin.
salty mud Apr 15, 2008, 03:37 PM Yeah, I'd have to say get a 360. Although the online requires money (£40/$80?) it isn't that much, and very much worth it with the ability to play with who you want when you want and a much wider variety of games. The only game I want from PS3 is MGS4, but rumours abound that won't stay exclusive for long... :ninja:
D0NIMATRIX Apr 16, 2008, 03:40 AM Get an Xbox 360. I have no idea of what the disease you're talking about is, but I can tell you I have never heard of it.
Xbox Live™ is just so much better than PS3 online, and it is so well done. Seriously, I think that the Xbox 360 and Xbox Live are Microsoft's best products.
Plus there's Halo 3.
Kozmos Apr 16, 2008, 08:45 AM Obviously the three rings of death would disagree. The only good product from MS has been Windows XP, and that's after SP2.
By Halo 3 I assume you mean Captain Bland's Monotonous Adventure Number 3?
Also MGS4 is not, I repeat NOT coming to the 360. I could repeat myself for the quadrillionth time and exactly specify the various reasons, ranging from business to technical, but wont. However should it somehow happen by the use of the Hitchhikers Improbability Drive, feel free to use this post to rub it in my face.
D0NIMATRIX Apr 16, 2008, 08:58 AM By Halo 3 I assume you mean Captain Bland's Monotonous Adventure Number 3?
I see you have watched Yahtzee's film.
Swein Forkbeard Apr 16, 2008, 09:08 PM It includes Knights of the Old Republic, Empire at War, Battlefront, Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, and Republic Commando. It also has a free trial for Galaxies, but I don't care about MMOs at the moment. Would you recommend it to me?
azzaman333 Apr 17, 2008, 04:33 AM MGS4 has an 80% chance of turning up on the 360 within a year of the PS3 release IMO.

I would. Sadly none of those games are as good as the old classic Star Wars games, but Battlefront and Republic Commando are both decent blasts in their own right, and everyone seems to love KotoR (I've never had a chance to get into it). Depends how much it's being sold for as well - definitely worth it if the whole collection is being sold for the same price as one brand new PC game :)
Edit: Didn't notice at first, but I'm a bit confused about why you asked about it in your own X-Box/PS3 thread...

Are you basing this on anything substantial or are you simply pulling it out of your ass?

Right. I'll create a new thread about those things.
Civfan333 Apr 18, 2008, 01:18 AM ok then.......hasn't this thread served it's purpose then?
azzaman333 Apr 18, 2008, 01:55 AM Are you basing this on anything substantial or are you simply pulling it out of your ass?
I'm pulling it out of my ass, but I suspect it will be too hard to resist a market such as the 360.
Swein Forkbeard Apr 18, 2008, 06:49 AM Just to ask, would anybody recommend Final Fantasy XII to me?
GoodEnoughForMe Apr 18, 2008, 10:29 AM Just to ask, would anybody recommend Final Fantasy XII to me?
GET THAT.
It's fun stuff.

Why you taking such offence here? We are saying MGS4 will probably be released on the 360 eventually. Nothing harmful there, I think?
BTW, check google - there are hundreds of stories for both sides of the argumant.

No, not really. The only argument for the 360 side I've seen is some rumors from unverified sources saying that it might come on it. Hideo Kojima himself denied this as well as many others. Furthermore I can go on an elaborate tirade to enlighten you on specifically on technical limitations that prevent the port from happening.
I'd just pisses me off when people talk about something they know nothing about. When I lack knowledge of a certain subject, I keep my mouth shut. Of course this is the innernet and nothing makes sense here.

And, I'm sure that if the money potential was high enough, they'd manage to port it despite the so called limitations you speak of.

Keeping your mouth shut is quite boring, IMO.
salty mud Apr 22, 2008, 01:14 PM I DO know what I'm talking about, but I DON'T know these limitations of which you speak. Elaborate?
Kozmos Apr 22, 2008, 02:13 PM Well for starters, this game has been developing for years on the PS3 and has been insured to squeeze every last one drop of power the console has to offer. The graphics are superb and cannot be matched by the 360. It simply lacks the necessary hardware. You may argue that the game will be recreated again for the 360, but I highly doubt that since they would have to either gimp the engine or create a new one, both which take time and $$$.
Of course there is the issue of the controller. AFAIK the 360 controller has neither rumble or motion sensing. You may argue this is unnecessary. True, but both rumble and sixaxis have been integrated into MGS4 gameplay which if translated to the 360 would require more modification.
Finally unless you feel like playing with 6 or 8 DVDs you will require the BD player attachment, since with all the HD videos in MGS4 Kojima stated it filled the entire BD disc. He didnt disclose if it's a single or dual layer disc (25 and 50 GB respectively) but that's still a helluva lot of data.
azzaman333 Apr 22, 2008, 11:57 PM If the money potential from MGS4 on the 360 significantly outweighs the time and costs to port it, and the PS3 version doesn't sell as well as anticipated, they'll find a way.
D0NIMATRIX Apr 23, 2008, 12:56 AM It's the free market, of course they will.
Civfan333 Apr 23, 2008, 02:21 AM I'm guessing they will sooner or later.......
Abaddon Apr 23, 2008, 03:50 AM The 360 is failing, its sales are declining where as the PS3 is finally picking up. It will remain excusive.
Oddly, Smash Brothers contains music from MGS4, and the character Snake is playable..
sir_schwick Apr 23, 2008, 10:04 AM Snake Eater never came out on XBOX, so I am not so sure MGS4 will come out on XBOX360.

You sort of put yourself wrong there. It has took almost 18 months for the PS3 to start selling well. Even though the Xbox sales are falling, it has been on sale since late '05 and had a lot more time to sell. The 360 still leads the sales by 8 million units, and that gap will not be closed soon, I think.
And let's not have a fanboy war, because that would be sad. We are advising the OP on which console to buy.

Now that IF is the size of the moon and you know it. The kind of IF in programs that keeps leading to other IF commands and is intent on driving you mad. I suspect you played ignorant just to push my buttons.
Plus I sort of doubt MGS4 will appeal to masses of kids with attention spans of 5 minutes (the story stretches from the MGS1 and has become rather convoluted) or the brainless college students who love the Halo franchise primarily for multiplayer and GOW for chainsaw guns!!!111!!1shift!one
Civfan333 Apr 23, 2008, 03:15 PM .......................I suggest not starting ANOTHER console war like saltymud suggested.......
Swein Forkbeard Apr 23, 2008, 04:08 PM Okay, would Guitar Hero II and/or Shadow of the Colossus be good ideas?
salty mud Apr 23, 2008, 05:25 PM Shadow of the Colossus is an amazing game. Although it may seem simplistic or too short, it has a charm of it's own.
Good choice, sir. :)
And Cleric, shut up. :)

From what people tell me the Guitar Hero series is really good.

Yeah. Somewhere I heard that you can face the bosses in time attack mode.
And SotC is definetely not the only game like that. I've heard that Metal Gear Solid and Super Mario Galaxy can end up that way, where it doesn't take long to beat the game, but beating game is not even half the fun.
And between Gran Turismo 3, Gran Turismo 4, and Burnout 3, which racing game would you recommend. Would you recommend any of them to begin with? Would ICO be a good idea?
And what about Uncharted: Drake's Fortune?
D0NIMATRIX Apr 23, 2008, 09:28 PM Yeah. Somewhere I heard that you can face the bosses in time attack mode.

Burnout owns all! Get Burnout Paradise if you have a 360.

I think you overestimate the costs to port, and underestimate the market for the 360.

Are you knocking Halo?:trouble:
GoodEnoughForMe Apr 24, 2008, 12:06 AM I would be surprised if MGS 4 got released on 360 considering how adamant what's his face said that it won't be.
salty mud Apr 24, 2008, 03:56 AM Read this. http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=62199
It is old, but it comes straight from the horse's mouth. You can't say the Xbox has changed since then, because it was released. The PS3 probably has however, probably stealing another console's features...
Kozmos Apr 24, 2008, 04:35 AM Uh huh, that article is about one month after the 360 was launched. Programmers havent even learned to properly harness the consoles power. Besides Kojima is the director not a technical expert.
As for fanboyism I am neutral. I dont own any console (but have played with all of them) and probably wont for quite some time, until MGS4 has been released in Europe with a PS3 bundle. Even then, I'll probably wait for the price drop.

Just buy one in America. It's cheaper and more complete than anywhere else.
Civfan333 Apr 25, 2008, 09:56 PM can you even play games if you buy the console in another country? my friend bought a wii in Japan, and then it wouldn't play any games here in Hawaii......
