View Full Version : map finder help
brianb1974 Apr 07, 2008, 06:09 PM I'm trying to run mapfinder.
To start out, I created a ruleset that had just one group and one rule--at least one plains hill stone within 3 squares.
Then I opened civ and created my custom game and hit ctrl-M
It regenerated the map one time and then stopped. The map wasn't one that fit my rule. After waiting a bit, I hit ctrl-x and it told me that it generated one map and saved none (since the one map it made didn't fit my rule).
Am I doing something wrong? I thought it was supposed to do a thousand saves and just pause for a second in between. I can't get it to do more than one. Hmmm
VirusMonster Apr 08, 2008, 02:20 AM Hmm, the HOF 3.13 mod allows you to adjust the mapfinder settings, then it will run more than one time.
When you hit alt+m, (not sure whether ctrl+m works) the map finder should tell you which rule file it is using. Make sure it uses the one you want, ie stone nearby.
Then, let it run as much as you want. I usually don't wait until all 100 saves are regenerated. I hit alt+x after half an hour and view the starting positions in mapfinder (you might have to adjust the save folder in your mapfinder to locate the recently generated starts). All stone starts should be saved.
Denniz Apr 08, 2008, 06:01 AM Sounds like there could be python errors. You should turn on logging to see what's going on.
You have to change you CivilizationIV.ini file. There is one for each version (i.e. in your "My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4", "My Documents\My Games\Warlords" and "My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4/Beyond the Sword" folders.
; Set to 1 for no python exception popups
HidePythonExceptions = 0
; Enable the logging system
LoggingEnabled = 1
; Overwrite old network and message logs
OverwriteLogs = 1
; Enable message logging
MessageLog = 1
It should create a Logs folder in the same folder as the Civ4 ini file. There will be 3 files that start with "Python". I need to see those or a screenshot of the Python error.
Note: the OverwriteLogs setting means the log file are cleared each time you start civ4, so be sure to grab them before you start civ4 again.
After the issue is resolved, make sure you set LoggingEnabled back to 0 as logging can slow the game down with some virus checkers.
BLubmuz Apr 11, 2008, 10:40 AM I installed the last version of MF, and finally it's working fine.
Thus i like to ask about the rules: how exactly work the variuos groups and so on.
I got some idea, but i like to hear something from Denniz.
jm4civ4 May 20, 2008, 07:24 PM i just installd map finder, started a custom game and after the initial map was shoen I pressed altl+M...nothing happened.....can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?
thanks in advance
Trooper4985 May 20, 2008, 08:51 PM Please excuse me if this has been addressed before but I'm tired and the searches I did produced nothing.
I have all 3 CIV 4's installed and patched then I installed HOF and then Map Finder. Map Finder will randomly quit generating maps... sometimes after only 3 or 4 maps and sometimes it will generate 300-400 before it just stops. I am trying to generate huge maps with 18 civs... is this the problem? I haven't yet tried to make smaller maps and fewer civs to see if the problems persists.
Any help would be appreciated.
Ozbenno May 20, 2008, 08:53 PM Map Finder will stop if two AIs can see each other, which can be possible in a huge map with 18 civs. Try with fewer AI and it should work fine.

Did you turn on the option in the Game options? Also you need to point the paths in the options to where you installed the map finder utility so it can find the data files. (If you start the utility and select the expansion it will ask to update the paths for you.)

Correct. There is a bug where Civ4 doesn't clear contact info when you regenerate. The HOF Mod prevents regen when there is contact between civs, manual regen or otherwise.

Thanks....I needed to turn it on in the game
but I am still struggling......
I let it go few minutes, 5 maps were generated as I watched, but when I opened up MapFinder only one of the maps had been stored...
what's strange is I think it was the 3rd of the five, not the last or the first, as one might expect....:confused:

It comes with a generic default rules file but the idea is to setup a rules file in the utility with what kind of starting position you want it to find. (2 gold, x forests, x river, etc.)
