View Full Version : Our Nations Name
Provolution Apr 08, 2008, 07:45 AM Our Nations Name Poll
Based on Shattereds nomination thread, where all proposals had to get a second support nomination, we hereby present the eight following nation names:
Link to discussion/ nomination http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=269979
This will be a 3 day poll, public vote, one option per voter, and we repoll the top three options with most votes until we get a name with 50 % support or more of the votes. There will be a second runoff between the two most popular options in the run-off, if needed.
Ivalician Empire
Dyphotian
Skiachorian
Cenaeads
Yamatokos
Treislofosoi
Aretans
Arethans
Seymoo Apr 08, 2008, 07:48 AM My vote is for Aretans since there doesn't appear to be an actual poll thing on here
Provolution Apr 08, 2008, 07:50 AM There is a poll, you probably saw the post only, then wrote this. You posted between my posting and polling part of my writing, in that narrow window.
Seidrik_The_Gray Apr 08, 2008, 08:17 AM LONG LIVE THE CENAEADIC PEOPLE!!! This name was based on Greek mythology from the invincible (invulnerable to weapons) hero, Caeneus (pronounced Kie-nee-us)!
Joe Harker Apr 08, 2008, 09:04 AM Aretans, the second one sounds like a bowel problem, the third option sounds like a mental problem, the fifth options sounds like a excotic diease that travellers get and sixth one sounds like a really really fancy brand of tooth floss!
Diamondeye Apr 08, 2008, 12:25 PM Skiachorian
w00ter Apr 08, 2008, 01:05 PM Arethans, the 'h' makes it better.
DaveShack Apr 08, 2008, 03:02 PM The short and easy to spell one. :mischief:
Lord Neil Apr 08, 2008, 03:10 PM I voted for Aretans.
blastoidstalker Apr 08, 2008, 04:38 PM I voted for the one I could spell with my eyes closed. To bad Peep did not make it on the list:)
Diamondeye Apr 09, 2008, 03:59 AM I suggest there be a runoff poll unless one option has 50+% of the votes when the vote ends, between the two favourites (Aretans seems certain as first), as I, for one, does not like to name our tribe after our city.
DaveShack Apr 09, 2008, 05:33 PM Perhaps rename the city then? :mischief:
Rashiminos Apr 09, 2008, 09:51 PM I foresee significant name changing in this game...
Provolution Apr 10, 2008, 12:37 AM That is only natural, just look at the Marcomanni/Goths/Teutons/Bavarians/Prussians/Germans/Volksdeutsche.

Arete sounds so ancient...like a City now burried in the sands of time...It's a perfect name for a city founded in 4000BC. I love the name, really I do, it's a fantastic choice for RP-history.
If Aretans wins, I propose a slight twist to Harani (pronounced Ha-rah-nee) as it sounds more like what a future Archeologist might call the stone age culture that founded such an ancient city. JMHO.
Seymoo Apr 10, 2008, 08:13 AM Excellent suggestion Kwarriorpoet. Not to devalue the effort that everyone put into thinking of names, but I think Aretans is winning mainly because all the other names are not nearly as short and catchy. Personally if Harani were up there it would have my vote. Perhaps the Harani of the land of Haran.
AluminumKnight Apr 10, 2008, 08:39 AM After the Difficulty Setting poll fiasco, do we really want to delve into repolling with new options again?
Seidrik_The_Gray Apr 10, 2008, 08:44 AM I will let the community decide what to do.
Ballazic Apr 10, 2008, 11:01 AM Perhaps rename the city then? :mischief:
Preposterous :mad:
AluminumKnight Apr 10, 2008, 11:33 AM I don't understand why our name can't be derived from our capital :confused: .
Rome -> Romans
Carthage -> Carthaginians
Babylon -> Babylonians
Arete -> Aretans
Seidrik_The_Gray Apr 10, 2008, 11:43 AM Arete, how is that pronounced anyway? Ah reet? Ah ret? Ah reh tay?

In the future runoff, (does second run-off mean that effectively we'll have 3 polls, and no more than 3?) I would like to replace Cenaeds with Harani for my offering to the public for a name for our people.
NZL Apr 10, 2008, 02:56 PM Arete in a Flemish [Dutch speaking part of Belgium] dialect actually means: "your ass" when pronounced A-ray-teh
AluminumKnight Apr 10, 2008, 03:56 PM Is Nova a bad name for a car?
Because in Spanish, it means "no go."
w00ter Apr 11, 2008, 03:06 AM Arete in a Flemish [Dutch speaking part of Belgium] dialect actually means: "your ass" when pronounced A-ray-teh
Reet = ass
A = (not a word in Dutch)
Don't know what kind of twisted dialect you speak, NZL, but in Dutch, Arete means nothing.
NZL Apr 11, 2008, 07:15 AM A is "Kempisch" dialect for "Uw" [=your]
Provolution Apr 11, 2008, 07:55 AM OOC- I think Flemish part of Belgium and Netherlands should unite, and toss the poor Wallonians where they belong, in France.
w00ter Apr 11, 2008, 09:06 AM /Offtopic I don't think that the Flemish and the Dutch would want such a union. In the past, Flanders revolted against Dutch superiority.
Btw, I do have the book "De leeuw van Vlaanderen" in my possession ;).
Rex rgis of Ter Apr 11, 2008, 03:27 PM It is pronounced Ah-Reet
Aristotle's philosophy involves astate of Ideal, called Arete.
However I like Kwarrior's first suggestion, the Caeneads.
w00ter Apr 11, 2008, 05:10 PM I don't think the old greeks pronounced Arete the english way. I think it should be pronounced as Ah-Reet-eh
Provolution Apr 11, 2008, 05:16 PM Ah-Reh-Teh I pronounce it, sounds classic and pure.
Provolution Apr 12, 2008, 05:25 PM If Badhron, joncnunn and w00ter all change votes from Arethans to Aretans, Aretans would have more than 50 %, does that sound good?
w00ter Apr 13, 2008, 04:36 AM Ah-Reh-Teh I pronounce it, sounds classic and pure.
/agree
If Badhron, joncnunn and w00ter all change votes from Arethans to Aretans, Aretans would have more than 50 %, does that sound good?
That would sound good, but one thing...
We can't change our vote.
DaveShack Apr 13, 2008, 09:54 AM There is a new poll, just make your choice there.
