please help - I have seen AI catapults fire on me from 1 to 2 tiles away - I think they came out of the city, fired at my forces and returned back into the city all on one move - how is this posible and how can I do it?

thanx in advance

They can't. Unless they were promoted by a GG and given the +1 movement promotion.

Or they have a road in their territory.

No. After they attack, they have used their 1 movement point.

on a road with engineering. 3 moves. Out, attack, back in

I just tried it out, and yeah, that does work.

It only works when attacking a square that has a base movement value of 1. If you attack a hill or forest, I'm almost positive that a one-MP unit then cannot move again. Yet another reason why it's a good idea to try to stay on forests and hills.

well, to know if it "works" is quite easy. An attack on a square has the same movement cost as a move on that square

Thus, when attacking in your territory, attacking a roaded tile will only cost 1/2 (1/3 with engineering) of a movement point. This also applies to units with commando attacking in enemy territory.

Not that this would occur in practice, but does that stack with blitz, potentially allowing a 1 move unit to strike 3 times (though doing so would probably be suicide :p)? Seems kind of odd to me.

Blitz was great in civ1 when it was all or nothing.. :)

I don't think it works on hills in your territory. The rules seem weird.

As long a unit has movement points remaining they are able to attack/move, so a unit with blitz and 1/3 movement point remaining could attack again.

Incorrect, I'm pretty sure. If you have a road on said hill in your territory, it's the exact same as moving onto a flatland road.

hey guys, nice to know that my question generated such a stimulating volley of comments....but......my original statement was misunderstood

nearly a year ago I read somewhere on this forum (and if I could remember where, then I wouldn't be trolling these forums) that cat.'s can fire on units in non-adjacent tiles....then just a few months ago during a game the AI pulled off this manuver on me......so.....does anyone have any familiuarity with THAT...?

thanks for all of the advice and analysis on roads and movement and partial move costs but I can break that down for myself.

thank you all and happy gaming

No, any unit that engages in combat, except for aeroplanes, must attack an adjacent tile. It may have been a modification or something.

Your's had to have been a visual bug.

Likely a visual bug. I've not seen non-aircraft bombard/attack non-adjacent tiles since civ 3, but man could that be devastating back in the day...
