So what's the best techs you guys have ever gotten from liberalism?

So far this is my best tech.

You could probably get fusion on settler, but for monarch this is pretty damn good. The other two islands had been fighting nonstop and hadn't teched anything. As you'll notice Alex and Hannibal don't even have a religion. Hammurabi eventually founded Christianity, but by then Montezuma had declared on him about 3 times, so it didn't help their relations. On my continent Pacal founded Hinduism, Judaism, and Confucianism. Boudica founded Buddhism, and I founded Taoism. Boudica attacked Pacal and I joined in to take his wonder filled capital and Hindu shrine and he was promptly wiped out.

If i'd pushed my luck it wouldn't have surprised me if i'd been able to get Industrialism. By the time i started taking over the world i nobody had anything stronger than longbows, which didn't put up much of a fight against my tanks.

BalbanesBeoulve,

I popped Future Tech 1 around 1300 or 1400 on settler once, but that doesn't count. Assembly Line is a nice one, and I got that in a Earth Huge 18 Civs One City Challenge, but to be fair it was only Noble. Assembly Line on Emperor is very nice. I honestly don't think I've ever won the Liberalism race on Emperor or higher. I just simply can't seem to keep up in tech the same way I could in lower difficulties. I typically focus on trying to trade things around, and keep up that way, but of course that keeps me far behind the tech leader with no chance of winning the Liberalism race. Regardless, good job!

Assuming you're able to build the great library it's fairly easy to win the liberalism race on Immortal. Well, unless I get sidetracked into a war and forced to follow a more military tech line. It just takes a lot of lightbulbing with the GS's the GL will help you pop.

The best i remember was getting Industiralism on Prince. Felt almost obscene.

On Emperor i like to take democracy. Can do it, if there was not too much of expensive medieval warfare on my side. In less peacefull (and hence slower) games Steel or Rifling are nice and somewhat safer.

I usually don't bother with slingshots and take Astronomy to get that extra boost from commerce and observatories before Scientific Method kills my science.

My usual tech order will get me Democracy if I get Liberalism first - which only happens 1/3 of the time.

I have been able to take Steel from lib in 560AD on Immortal once :D

That game turned out pretty well for me ;)

My favorite is democracy, but on prince I often have to settle for astronomy or something else of similar rank.

In my last game I chose Nationhood instead of economics from liberalism. I have let the free Great Merchant to pass me by, but it was worth it!

I had castles in every city and I stacked this with Nationalism bonus to achieve a great early spymongering advantage which made my game. I finally stole economics when I was capable of making a straight shot at corporation.

I think castles are underrated; the +25% :espionage: is terrific. Unfortunately the espionage boost obsoletes fairly quickly: at Economics

Yeah, that's just a standard city name when playing as the Netherlands.

Steal and Steam power are regular picks on Monarch; above that my play become too disorganised to allow for anything juicy (if I win the race at all. I'm usually busy to avoid losing, or to stir up trouble to tech as well as I would like).

560AD liberalism date is not that impressive, but STEEL?! Like how the heck did you manage to beeline that far on immortal!? I'm assuming BTS right? I can do that on vanilla and warlords, but asethetics slows me down too much on BTS for any meaningful liberalism date or tech besides astronomy or nationalism.

I dont' underrate them, I don't rate them at all!!:)

They just fade too damn quick to be of any use imo, even on marathon. I would much rather be spending my hammers on things that will last as opposed to something that will only give me a bonus for a short time.

Castles are cheap for protective civs and those who have stone. In my last game I had pyramids, which allowed me to run Representation early. The Rep stacked with Merc and castles everywhere was such a powerful bonus, that I didn't need economics fast. I had more profit out of nationhood. It made my Immortal game.

They didn't fade out early for me, they did their job. I was actually already constructing jails everywhere when I stole economics.

The answer is: don't rush economics when you have castles everywhere. Economics unlock you the extra trade route, castles give out it already, and you must adapt free market to get this benefit - which is not good when you are happy with merc. So on top of that it is a quick loss of +25% :espionage: bonus + vs. a free great merchant.

I don't see how Aesthetics can slow you down. You usually research Alphabet don't you? Well research Aesthetics instead, then 4 turns of alphabet and you can trade Aesthetics for Alphabet, then trade both for nearly all the early techs.

In monarch OCC, I usually take biology with liberalism, or something close to it. (Sometimes I have to settle for Scientific Method or Chemistry) I don't remember how far I can usually push it on emperor.

How in the heck you are not having monotheism yet?
Don't you trade/steal techs at all?

sylvanllewelyn

Big deal: the polytheism --> monotheism --> theology --> divine rights path is only useful if you're doing something specific with it. Although polytheism does allow literature, which allows the national epic.

When trading with the AI, remember not to take techs you can't use to "make up" for deals that are less favourable to yourself. If you don't need it, don't take it (and don't take the deal).

The only way I ever get anything obscenely good is if I build the great wall and discover the other civs through optics early. The settled GW spy usually puts out enough EP for me to know what everyone else is studying, otherwise I have to check the diplo screen all the time. I hate losing the so I usually end up taking nationalism, PP, or astronomy. Whenever I get something huge like Assembly Line or Radio, I think, "Maybe I should start playing Monarch."
