A baffling problem (for me) - I'm playing English on the standard Earth map (18 Civs), have built London on the starting south-east corner square, and the damn place simply will not grow above size 8!

It's had a food surplus for centuries, has an Aqueduct and every other building type (it's the 1100s) and despite promising to grow in 1 turn it flat out fails to do so.

Other cities of mine have grown into the teens without any hitches at all, and reloading doesn't make a difference.

There's no message on the city screen I can spot that indicates anything that might be blocking it, and searching these forums and the rest of the web threw up nothing similar...I'm at a loss!

I suspect I'm missing something very fundamental, but for the life of me can't work out what; can any of you kind people help?

If it says it will turn in 1 turn and doesn't the only explanation would be that you have clicked on "avoid growth". If you click on your city and look at the bottom right (left of the map) you can check and uncheck "avoid growth".

D'oh!

Thank you, and exactly right! In fact now you've reminded me I can even remember turning that option on ages ago, when the city was growing quicker than I could handle in the early game. One of the features I hadn't used before, and I thought might be worth a try...

Now unchecked, and London's size 9 - thanks again, and please excuse me while I go away to hide my blushes.

No Worries. We've all done the same or similar things. :D

That's worse than the time when I spent thousands of years as a Pagan Pacifist.

DukeRetread - in regards to your thread title, is 'The Big Smoke' a nickname for London?

It is, although not uniquely (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Smoke) - not really accurate these days (or for many decades), given modern emission laws, but the name's stuck.

lmao! I forget to change civics/religions at least once in about half my games. The worst: 15 cities with every Hindu building, and I discover as soon as I finish building the AP that I'm still Buddhist...

Doesn't AP change it's religion base depending on the Owner's State?

The AP's religion is fixed at whatever it's creator's state religion was at the moment of completion.
