View Full Version : How to use ALL of my gold for science slider?
NintendoTogepi Apr 11, 2008, 02:54 PM Often in my late games (Espesically OCCs) I'm making an extra 100 commerce per turn. The thing is, I don't need it, and I'd rather put it into research.
How do I put it all into the research slider? :(
MrCynical Apr 11, 2008, 05:13 PM I'm assuming you mean you're turning a gold profit even at 100% science? Corporations provide an indirect way to convert some of it into something more useful (e.g. by using the gold to fund Sushi to run scientists). There's no quick and simple way to convert gold to science if you're already at 100% though.
BalbanesBeoulve Apr 11, 2008, 05:18 PM Build more troops, get more land, and raise your overall science output.
Not much you can do in a OCC, other than using the gold to buy techs.
semirami Apr 11, 2008, 06:01 PM Rush buy your buildings/trops and put your cities to build research. The deal isnt fair, but if you really dont need the gold it is better than nothing.
NintendoTogepi Apr 11, 2008, 06:12 PM Yes, I'm running 100% science but still have tons of left over commerce...:(
semirami Apr 11, 2008, 06:32 PM Remove some citizens from high commerce tiles and put them into scientists.
r_rolo1 Apr 11, 2008, 06:38 PM Run US and rushbuy... or try to buy some leftover tech with it.
tycoonist Apr 11, 2008, 06:46 PM Remove some citizens from high commerce tiles and put them into scientists.
if they are working high commerce tiles (which is all going to science) why move them to scientists and lose the food/hammer bonus and probably science as well?
D_almighty Apr 11, 2008, 06:47 PM Remove some citizens from high commerce tiles and put them into scientists.
That won't work, as citizen's working high commerce tiles at 100% science will just convert that commerce to science.
One thing you can do is remove the number of merchants you have though, as those do not go into the science slider; change merchants into scientists.
OTAKUjbski Apr 11, 2008, 08:34 PM Yes, I'm running 100% science but still have tons of left over commerce...:(
Well, I have to make the obligitory comment that it's impossible to have 'left over :commerce:'.
When you're running at 100% Science, 100% of your Commerce is converted to Science (100% - 100% = 0% "left over" :p). If you have a left over Gold surplus each turn, then changing the tiles you work will have no effect except to make your economy less efficient.
That being said, it is impossible to 'convert' positive Gold at 100% directly into Science.
Sure, you can use that Gold to buy backfill technologies from other civilizations, but within your own economic system you can't really convert it into anything, because it's already at the 'end of the line'.
Positive GPT (Gold per turn) at 0% Gold is due to a variety of sources:
Foreign GPT trade for your resources.
Raw GPT from buildings such as Religions Shrines, Religious buildings (Spiral Minaret) and Corporate Headquarters.
Raw GPT from specialists (and settled super specialists) such as Merchants and Priests.
Corporations such as Creative Constructions.
Of those, the only one under your control in both directions are specialists.
If you have Merchants or Priests running in your cities, switch them for Scientists.
Otherwise, anything you do to reduce the other sources of raw Gold will only serve to make it 'disappear' -- not converted.
--------
In an 'intangible', indirect sense, you can also rushbuy +:science:% buildings to quasi-'convert' the excess Gold into Science. Or, like others have mentioned, rushbuy some units and go conquer something.
-- my 2 :commerce: (hope it's worth the nickel I put into it)
Gliese 581 Apr 12, 2008, 01:09 AM This only happens to me in some OCCs. My solution is to upgrade all units, even those with few promotions since the only thing you're lacking in an OCC is production. You could make a point of training large numbers of soon-to-be-obsolete units and then upgrade them all, lots of hammers saved. Unless you make them all in one turn anyhow.. which I'll admit is not uncommon.
BalbanesBeoulve Apr 12, 2008, 01:27 AM How exactly did you achieve this? In any sizeable empire i've never achieved this without building gold, but then again i never go religion crazy, and just settle my merchants/priests in my capital which is rarely my wall street city. The inflation event definitely makes this easier, and maybe an OP unrestricted combo like Darius of HRE. Anyway, good job.

Try the HRE, it's fun.
Two keys, religion and corps. With corps, spreading it to the enemy is key. Let them handle the maintenance cost, though you can get a net gain from your own cities (easier with HRE of course). Corps give you more than religion. Try cramming as many in the gold city as possible (or just the ones you can get).
The Spiral Minaret helps as well.
It's not difficult to get, if you go for it, but it's also not really a great idea.

He said it was OCC, so it's quite easy, since the maintenance cost of your "empire" in OCC is very low.
With just one settled prophet and market/grocer/bank, you can usually have a surplus gold for the most part of - if not all - the game.
BalbanesBeoulve Apr 12, 2008, 02:20 PM I know how to achieve it in OCC since you don't have any maintenance at all.
AndiD Apr 13, 2008, 04:14 AM It even works with a standard empire - Caste System ASAP, have one city churn out GMs throughout the game, settle them in the same city, build market/grocer/bank/wall street and run 7 merchant specialists till the end of time there. Corps, Philo, Org, Versailles, State Property, The religion buildings->gold wonder, settled priests etc. are all gravy on top of it (or rather, allow larger empires while still turning a profit with 100% science).
