View Full Version : Modern German General
Wolfshanze Apr 13, 2008, 01:10 AM Straight from the advice of DK & Chugg... "do it yourself", I finally broke-down and did one, since I felt comfortable enough to reskin an existing model in Paint Shop Pro (used nothing but PSP & a DDS converter)... I have absolutely ZERO experience in doing 3D models, but I had to start somewhere...
This is a Modern German General (Warlord) for Civ4.
Based on the default Modern General, Mamba changed the colors from green to German grey, Wolfshanze did what he could with the detail work, reworking the tunic with a new cut, collar tabs, Iron Cross, shoulder boards & breast eagle... the pants received red piping & a new buckle, while the cap got a new cocarde and cap eagle.
New to v2.0 are some texture improvements and the riding crop has been replaced with a Marshall's Baton (assistance by Walter Hawkwood).
New to v3.0, caucasian skin tones, and a "generic" European General (for use with America and other European civs without a custom general).
New to v4.0, completely reworked Marshall's Baton (new NIF files... thanks to the Coyote).
New to v5.0, Luger P08 parabellum pistol replaces the default revolver (thanks Coyote!).
All needed files, including animation are included in the download.

avain Apr 13, 2008, 01:36 AM Congrats on your first unit, Wolf! I hope many more will follow!
mamba Apr 13, 2008, 02:15 AM Not bad, here's to hoping you stay in the reskinning business ;)
Chuggi Apr 13, 2008, 02:17 AM Looks good. :)
Straight from the advice of DK & Chugg... "do it yourself".
Well mine's almost finished if you're still interested in it (it just has a problem with the neck in the animation).
mamba Apr 13, 2008, 04:31 AM Well mine's almost finished if you're still interested in it (it just has a problem with the neck in the animation).
Hehe, now it is almost finished, so far it probably would not be in your next release which is still two weeks or so away ;)
I for one am certainly interested in your version, nothing wrong with having different alternatives for the same unit.

I like some parts of wolfshanze's version better, the torso, belt and the boots. So I could merge the head, and the trench coat off mine onto wolf's.

GFO_Anubis Apr 13, 2008, 05:18 AM Nice reskin Wolf.. looks good and cant see thst its your first unit so keep up the good work.. makes me wonder if I should try it to...
The_Coyote Apr 13, 2008, 05:39 AM nice reskin! And your painting skills are better than you said, i even recognize the iron cross ;)
but perhaps it would look even better if you change the button colour from black to silver, reduce the size the iron cross (if possible), add the breast pockets and change the colour of the belt.

Wolfshanze Apr 13, 2008, 11:18 AM Thanks for the comments folks!
Not bad, here's to hoping you stay in the reskinning business ;)
You said it... "reskinning"... because I still don't think I'm cut-out for 3D models... I might be able to reskin an existing model or two, but that's about the extent of my "talents". I'm sorta handy with Paint Shop Pro (PSP), as I used to do a lot of 2D art work for strategy games in my younger days (I'm still using PSP7), but when games started going 3D, that's when I stopped.
Anyways, I want to thank you Mamba for the base grey transformation... that saved me a lot of headaches, and I could just work on the details!
Looks good. :)
Coming from you, that's a big compliment.
Well mine's almost finished if you're still interested in it (it just has a problem with the neck in the animation).
I'm always interested in more options... but I ain't in no rush... you know me... "Mr. Patient!" ;)
Seriously though... I didn't undercut anybody and come-out with my own Rommel (or Kesselring even)... I never once requested this guy... I based this model off-of Field Marshall Bock. Never once did I request him of anybody, so feel free to make all the Rommels and Kesselrings anybody wants... I only made FM Bock! :D
Nice reskin Wolf.. looks good and cant see that it's your first unit so keep up the good work.. makes me wonder if I should try it to...
Thanks... give it a try... realize all I did was a reskin in PSP... I'm still not even brave enough to download Nifscope (or whatever they use these days).
I like some parts of wolfshanze's version better, the torso, belt and the boots. So I could merge the head, and the trench coat off mine onto wolf's.

Alright... slow-down... it is just a reskin job, so I'm afraid I can't claim any parts as my own, cuz I didn't model anything, just did some recoloring work in PSP.
I'm still not a good painter... but I am a good scavenger... everything you see... collar tabs, Iron Cross, shoulder boards, breast eagle, cocarde and cap eagle... they were all actual uniform pieces I "lifted" from a site that sells them... I just cropped them out, resized them, and slapped them on the base model (adjusted coloring/brightness where needed). I just wanted them to be accurate, so that's how I did it. I admit I ventured-out on the red piping job on the pants... that was free-hand!
On the Iron Cross... I know it's a bit out-of-scale (ie: a little big)... I actually played with this quite a bit. The black cross itself is actually only two pixels in width... if I made it any smaller, it would lose so much detail, it'd look more like a 'plus' then an Iron Cross.
I wanted to do breast pockets but this is where my experience with 3D models interfered... the NIF calls for a large patch over the left breast of the uniform... my first thought was to put the breast eagle and pocket on the right (where they belong) and have the large patch blot-out the Eagle on the left (which would be mirrored) and redraw the breast pocket if necessary... unfortunately, due to the 3D-ness of the model, there's some considerable stretching of the tunic going on here which makes me lose hair in my 2D thinking (I'm like Khan). My first attempt to put a breast eagle on the right had it going from the buttons up underneath his arm pit! I eventually gave-up and just used the breast eagle on the patch that covers the left side, because it doesn't stretch... I had serious problems getting the eagle and pocket working on the base tunic due to stretching issues which stressed my "first reskin ever" mind to the max.
Anyways, to make a long story short (too late), that's the best you're going to get from a "1st try ever" on reskinning a 3D model. I have a hard time thinking in 3D with this old 2D mind of mine. I'm actually surprised it turned-out as well as it did... I didn't think I would even have anything "releaseable" to the public, but I thought this cut the mustard to be "mod-worthy" for some folks... and now you can be the 1st kid on the block to have your very own Field Marshall Bock Warlord (I know most of you are going "who's he?").
Remember folks... it's just a reskin... I went from the model on the left to the guy on the right, with nothing more then PSP, a photo of FM Bock and a link to a German Uniform site! I got the desired effect I was looking for... now Germany has a General to lead the troops! :goodjob:

Wolfshanze Apr 13, 2008, 01:01 PM I just did a minor update to fix the shoulder boards... was only getting a portion of them, now get the full boards! (still figuring this 3D stuff out).

Good for you wolf.
Great job for a first unit, excellent. If you want any advice for 3D models just ask. Start with Nifskope first and make your way up to Blender (which is where I am now). I'm glad you decided to start up. :mischief:
Dom Pedro II Apr 14, 2008, 08:15 AM Yeah, this is certainly not a bad way to start your unit-making career. Good work
aspower Apr 14, 2008, 09:10 AM Great skinning. I think the current model w/ your skin looks perfect for a modern era German Great General.
Ekmek Apr 14, 2008, 11:04 AM not to be nitpicky but maybe you can remove the revolver in nifskope? of course that may make the shooting animation weird but it would differentiate it a bit.
mamba Apr 14, 2008, 12:09 PM Nah, he should have a gun if the animation requires it. If I cannot stand one thing it is weird animations for units, like the modern settler talking into his hand as he misses the cell phone. That is reason for me to seriously consider using it.
Differentiate all you want, but keep the animation intact (or use a different one).
Wait for Chuggis version for more differentiation. ;)
Talking of weird units, any idea how I can get the flamethrower to make a 'flame' sound rather than a gun sound ?
snipperrabbit!! Apr 14, 2008, 01:24 PM You just need a kitchen torch and a microphone !
Ekmek Apr 14, 2008, 01:28 PM didn't civ3PTW have a flamethrower unit with sound?
mamba Apr 14, 2008, 01:33 PM The sound isn't really the problem, it is to get the unit to actually make that sound ;)
I'd go with AS3D_UN_ICBM_SELECT over gunfire any day :)

Okay guys... enough is enough... stay on-topic!
***BACK ON-TOPIC***
not to be nitpicky but maybe you can remove the revolver in nifskope? of course that may make the shooting animation weird but it would differentiate it a bit.
Actually, I've been thinking/wanting to change the Revolver to a German Luger Parabellum... though I'm not sure if I can do that with reskining alone... not sure if I have to change the model if I want a luger or not... this is where my noobness on 3D models kicks-in again.
http://world.guns.ru/handguns/luger_p08.jpg
After all is said and done, I'd just be honored if my German General found his way into a mod besides the Wolfshanze Mod!
snipperrabbit!! Apr 15, 2008, 03:19 AM Seconded ... thought of a reequip with a luger yesterday but wasn't sure for accuracy.
avain Apr 15, 2008, 03:35 AM Seconded ... thought of a reequip with a luger yesterday but wasn't sure for accuracy.
WARNING! Now comes an idiotic joke a'la avain style:p
From Wikipedia: "...the Luger is still sought after by collectors both for its sleek design, superlative accuracy, great durability..." :p:D;)
Gaius Octavius Apr 15, 2008, 06:51 PM Nice one. Now all we need are Patton and Montgomery to go along with the Desert Fox. :D
Shqype Apr 15, 2008, 07:44 PM Congrats Wolfshanze, it came out good. I know my brother in particular will love this! :D

Since I'm the guy that brought it up I guess I could have a look at reshaping it via blender. For the record I was thinking a luger too.
Ekmek Apr 16, 2008, 02:32 PM Attached is my modifications. The pistol has such low polygons that it was hard to differentiate it. I add the larger muzzle. I also slimmed the pant legs a bit, raised the boots a tad and peak the officer's cap. but the unit is so small you'll probably not notice.
(warlordmodern_0.nif in the zip is your original file)
Wolfshanze Apr 19, 2008, 11:17 PM Congrats on your first unit, Wolf! I hope many more will follow!
Well, since I'm limiting myself to reskins for now, I guess I have to figure-out if there's any more national WWII uniforms that are mostly similar to the default general (or any other existing models I can reskin).
I might make another reskin if I can think of the right model and nation to combine.
Ekmek Apr 20, 2008, 02:26 PM wolfshanze did you look at the changes I made? anything worthwhile there?
Wolfshanze Apr 20, 2008, 02:31 PM wolfshanze did you look at the changes I made? anything worthwhile there?
The change you made to the gun wasn't exactly what I had in mind (looked like the revolver with a big muzzle... I was more looking for a true Luger model for the gun)... I did notice the change to the hat and pants... liked the hat change, not sure if I liked the pant change or not (Germans did have baggy pants uniforms too).
For some reason I couldn't get the gun texture in your change... maybe I did something wrong, I could see the shape, but the gun was pink (untextured).
KrugerPritz Apr 21, 2008, 04:46 PM And after the hat in progress for Mussolini could be used for an italian general too!!! :D
Wolfshanze May 04, 2008, 10:50 PM And after the hat in progress for Mussolini could be used for an italian general too!!! :D
Yeah... I'm probably going to look into doing some more generals... might go with the Russians next.
Wolfshanze May 06, 2008, 10:23 PM I have just released v2.0 of the German General.
New to v2.0 are some texture improvements (some brighter/more-distinct uniform items) and the riding crop has been replaced with a Marshall's Baton (NIF/texture assistance by Walter Hawkwood... thanks).
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k3/Wolfshanze/Games/GermanGenerals.png
If anyone would like to "volunteer" themselves to properly shaping the baton into a shaft, instead of an inverted riding crop, please let me know... modelers are welcome to apply!
Wolfshanze May 07, 2008, 10:37 AM Oh... and in case anyone else is thinking of making WWII generals, here's a handy little page from Captain Courageous (http://www.diggerhistory.info/pages-uniforms/all-forces.htm).
Wolfshanze May 10, 2008, 06:50 PM Don't know why I never thought of it before, or did anything about it... but the default Modern General always had a "Eurasian" look to the eyes and skin-tone... which makes sense if you only have ONE General for ALL nations on the planet... but since I'm doing nation-specific Generals...
New to v3.0, caucasian skin tones.
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k3/Wolfshanze/Games/CaucasianGenerals.png
Note the bottom-left "Mongolian" General has the default "Eurasian" skin tone and slanted eyes... the others now show the updated look.
I have updated the Russian and German Generals to a more "Caucasian" skin-tone with rounded eyes... I have also included a "Generic" European General with the German General download to use with European/American nations (until a more proper nation-specific unit is made).
Wolfshanze May 12, 2008, 01:00 AM So nobody cared for the caucasian skin? How about if I get the Marshall's Baton completely redone? (Thanks to the Coyote for the help).
v4.0 now released!
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k3/Wolfshanze/Games/GermanBatonGen2.png http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k3/Wolfshanze/Games/RommelBaton2.jpg
Wolfshanze May 13, 2008, 12:29 PM Man... nobody liked the caucasian change? Nobody comments on the new baton?
Well, how about this then?
What if I change out the default revolver for a German P08 Parabellum Luger?
v5.0 now released as-of 13 May 08...
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k3/Wolfshanze/Games/GermanLugerGen2.png http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k3/Wolfshanze/Games/RommelBaton2.jpg http://www.a2armory.com/images/luger-small.jpg
avain May 13, 2008, 01:20 PM I have to say that I really like what you are doing, and I think you are improving nicely!
Thank you very much for these Generals, I intend to include them in VD.
Also, the skin tones are great, and this German General really needed that Luger!
KrugerPritz May 13, 2008, 02:35 PM Great, very great work... Thank You for doing it
Wolfshanze May 13, 2008, 04:27 PM Also, the skin tones are great, and this German General really needed that Luger!
So I take-it, you didn't like the Marshall's Baton? :p
avain May 13, 2008, 04:45 PM So I take-it, you didn't like the Marshall's Baton? :p
Oh, man, and I intended to edit my post to include the praise of THE Baton, but hereby I proclaim:
This is one Great Baton you have here!
Wolfshanze May 13, 2008, 05:07 PM Hehe... just messing with you... but honestly... from the very beginning, I envisioned this guy with a marshall's baton and a luger... but I did (and still) lack the skills to do the modeling side... so I subcontract out my vision to those with more skills then me, and I just guide the project along with my vision, do whatever source research I can, and put pretty colors on things!
I'm pretty much out of ideas for my German General... v5 is probably the last for a grey-uniform Wehrmacht Army Field Marshall... (though I may revisit with some different colors and/or uniforms... maybe German Green and/or Waffen SS General)... but for now... on to other generals!
Ekmek May 13, 2008, 06:50 PM very cool! yeah you could probably retexture him to be a SS guy (a german spy? or maybe the Abwehr uniform would be better)
Wolfshanze May 13, 2008, 07:04 PM very cool! yeah you could probably retexture him to be a SS guy (a german spy? or maybe the Abwehr uniform would be better)
None of the above... folks need to realize the SS was more then a concentration camp guard... there was a Waffen SS military branch which had their own combat generals... if I reskined him to the SS, I would reskin him as a Waffen SS General (they had a distinctly different uniform).
Ekmek May 13, 2008, 07:59 PM I was just thinking beyond a general unit, andmaybe having an SS unit
Wolfshanze May 13, 2008, 08:24 PM I was just thinking beyond a general unit, andmaybe having an SS unit
I still don't think you're following me... what exactly do you consider "SS"? It's a HUGE organization.
What I was referring to is an SS General... military type... there were military (Waffen) SS Generals.
When you say "maybe having an SS unit", that would be inclusive of what I'm saying, because I'm talking about an SS General (which is "SS"). If you are looking for something else, you need to be specific... "SS" means a LOT of things, but includes the Waffen-SS, and Waffen-SS generals!
The SS consists of many, MANY branches... there's the Chancellery guard... the Waffen SS, the concentration camp guards, and a lot of other stuff... you can't just say "I want SS" and expect everyone to know exactly what you're looking for.
We already have a handful of "Waffen SS" military troops (ie: SS Infantry units) made for Civ4... personally, I use Bernie's which is the most accurate... we do, however, lack a Waffen SS general. ;)
Ekmek May 14, 2008, 10:47 AM I had an Imperial and Nazi Germany course in my undergrad (fun class) so I know the SS is big, Himmler's state within a state. If the unit is done in black it would make a good standard black uniform SS. not the death camp guys, not the waffen-SS. Where would a black uniform SS police types fit in? I'm thinking it could act as a spy - but then I was thinking an abwehr uniform would be better but harder to distinguish from your general.
Wolfshanze May 14, 2008, 10:57 AM It seems you're looking for a German spy...
The Abwehr was of course, the spy organization... but they didn't exactly go house to house in a big black uniform.
Perhaps what you should think of (if you want a wartime German "spy" unit), might rather be a Gestapo unit?!?! Trench coat and all... a division of the SS, but more often seen dressed more casually when in "work mode".

"Your papers please"
Ekmek May 14, 2008, 12:00 PM lol
that would be cool
Wolfshanze May 14, 2008, 12:05 PM You could base it on Major Arnold Toht (http://youtube.com/watch?v=d1yZgDP8sA0)

Ambreville Jun 18, 2008, 10:18 AM Any chance you guys might come up with a British General (Montgomery of course, or I would prefer Dowding for my air mod)??
Great unit by the way. Thanks!
Ambreville Jun 18, 2008, 10:23 AM I'm also looking for a Gestapo unit along with a French resistance fighter (farmer with submachinegune?)
Wolfshanze Jun 18, 2008, 12:04 PM Any chance you guys might come up with a British General (Montgomery of course, or I would prefer Dowding for my air mod)??
Great unit by the way. Thanks!
Actually Monty is on my "to-do" list... I'll be making him with his silly little beret and everything.
Ambreville Jun 18, 2008, 01:07 PM Cool. Any chance you might do the RAF's Dowding impersonation in some distant future?
