Finished the *other* naval turboprop attack plane..
Its the Douglas A2D Skyshark (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A2D_Skyshark)
..while not such a slender beauty as the Wyvern its still an awesome design in its own right.

..she has pretty much the same airframe layout as the skyraider, but apart from that shes a completely unique plane..

That's a very good model, but I'm surprised you didn't choose the A-1 Skyraider instead.

@Xeno: I chose this one because i dig exotic planes... ..and i want my civ games to have a more *what if* feel to them.. ..for further reasons google for some pics of this plane, it just looks cool...:D

@Snipper: If any remains of Douglas still exist in some centuries.. ..why not? ;)

yea.. ..i was thinking about an amphibious assault ship class replacing the transport later on, this one could be a russian unique unit then...
...but then again theres also the Lun..

That aircraft was part of the whole KM project that fell apart after the fall of the Soviet Union.

Saschkin
Apr 17, 2008, 05:55 PM
true, but they had different purposes, the KM iself was afaik only a testbed to see how big you can make a WIG craft, the Orlyonok was an amphibious landing craft and the Lun was made to attack carrier battle groups..

These planes are all Fugly... are any of them particularly practical or likely to see combat, or is this just a flight of fantasy (pun not intended)?

Saschkin
Apr 17, 2008, 06:34 PM
its all a question of taste.. :)

some of them were intended for series production but were overtaken by ICBM development, some resulted in other projects like Harrier and Osprey and some were just *fantasy*..

The Soviets always had a penchant for function over form, just look at the Yak-28. The old Soviet system for reviewing designs and the controlled economy also meant that any design that showed promise was at least given a prototype, which is where a lot of these weird designs come from.
