My wife has a Mac and we don't seem to be able to get the HOF mod to work for her. She's running Leopard although I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

We downloaded the official 1.74 patch and it seems to have installed fine. But when she tries to run the HOF 1.74 mod - loading it either automatically or manually from the startup screen - it refuses to show any UI for her at all:

Also, we're unable to bring up the options screen, either with a keyboard shortcut from in-game or even from the startup menu. If we click "advanced" and then "options" the click does nothing, it just sits there on the menu.

Does anyone have any idea what we're doing wrong? Thanks in advance for any help.

The HOF Mod is not loading at all. The absence of the UI means it failed at some crucial point in the load process and its Python scripts are not running.

1. Are you using the Mac version of the HOF Mod (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=214617)?

2. If you are, I suggest you enable Python logging in the ~/Documents/Civilization IV/CivilizationIV.ini file. Open that file with TextEdit or another text editor (not MS Word or Pages ...). Change 0 to 1 in the following lines:

; Enable the logging system
LoggingEnabled = 1

Then launch Civ4 and load the mod.

Open the Python error log in TextTedit:

~/Documents/Civilization IV/Logs/PythonErr.log

Copy the contents to a post here for suggestions on the cause.

I think that this is one of the problems that you see if you put the mod in the wrong place. The HOF mod needs to go in the mod folder inside the folder where the actual application is, usually Applications:Civilization IV:Mods. There is another Mod folder in Users:UserName:Documents:Civilization IV:Mods. Some mods will work if they are in this folder, and they will all show up on the list of mods that are available. But the HOF mod has hardwired paths so it has to be in the folder with the Civ IV app.

Yup! Could well be right. The installation instructions are in the thread I linked.

Thanks for the replies. I'm the wife who's having the mod problems.

I did download the Mac version of the mod. For kicks, here's a pic of where the mod's installed, I'm pretty sure it's where it's supposed to be, right?

I will go enable logging and see what the error log tells me.

Again, thanks for the help, I really appreciate it. My husband tells me the HoF mod is pretty nifty and I would really like to use it!

Hi, welcome :wavey:

That looks like the wrong place, as it has the CivilizationIV.ini in the same folder, and the MODS folder is all upper case.

Installation
The mod is a simple ZIP file. Expand it (or let Safari expand it) to produce a folder, and put this folder in the /Civilization IV/Mods/ folder. This Mods folder is in the same directory as your Civilization IV application.

I've added the emphasis.

Ok, that fixed it! I wonder how I managed to have a mods folder in documents, but it doesn't matter anymore because I know not to use it.

Thank you so much! Off to go conquer the world, I hope. ;)

The game installs the Mods folder in ~/Documents/.... It's where user-installed mods are really supposed to go.

The application/Mods folder was intended only to have Firaxis-supplied mods. This is all in line with the desire to keep user-specific stuff in the user's directories.

Unfortunately, the game software is (or was) not particularly good at running them from Documents, at least on Windows, so early on a lot of mod makers gave up trying to use that location and used the one in the application's folder instead. Then they committed the cardinal sin of hard coding the directory paths so that the mods *had* to be in there for ever more. The HoF Mod includes several such mods, and I'm afraid I've had to adapt it to the Mac environment without fixing this issue.

I am not able to move the HOF-Mac mod into the folder you specified. I get the following message (seems to be from Mac OS):

The item "HOF-Mac-1.61.011" could not be moved because "Mods" cannot be modified.

Are you logged in with an Admin account? If so, you should be able to authenticate, using the Admin password, to allow the move.
