The Conscientious Empire is a concept I proposed in the Strategies & Tips forum. My guidelines can be found here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=268818), but the basic idea is this: If you wouldn’t do it as a leader in real life, don’t do it in your game.
While playing this way affects many of the decisions you make, a lot of the gameplay remains pretty much the same. So instead of full-game epics, the focus of this thread is to present shorter anecdotes that deal specifically with the trials and triumphs experienced when running an empire while listening to your conscience. I invite everyone who’s interested to give this a try and post your stories here.
I’ll start us off with a happy tale from my recent emperor win:
In 750 A.D., Xerxes, my neighbor to the south, came by and threatened to beat me up if I didn’t give him my territory map and 100g. My military advisor told me that we were just as strong as them. So I called his bluff.

Oh well. Here we go.
My other two neighbors, Zululand and Arabia, were happy to join my side once I taught them how to work with metal. So the three of us set out to teach Persia not to be such a bully.
In 780 I took Swazi from the Persians and found an Arab slave working there.

We find slavery abhorrent in this empire, and the happy news of our victorious forces’ emancipation of the poor soul rang throughout the land. I sent him off to Istanbul to prepare for his trip home.
Abu was quite pleased to hear the news, and would have gladly given me all 14 of his gold pieces to pay for the worker’s trip, but it didn’t feel right to charge him. The look of gratitude on his face was thanks enough. :)

The Zulu backed out of the war after about 10 turns, but the Arabs kept up the fight until long after our alliance had ended and I had made peace with the Persians. They did most of their fighting in my territory, but I did nothing to stop them. I just sat back, grew quietly and watched the show.
After my war with Persia ended, I sold them all of their workers they would buy, then gave them the rest. Xerxes' response to this was one I don’t recall seeing before, and under the circumstances I thought it was classic:
