Excellent! :goodjob:
The Lockheed YO-3A "Quiet Star"...Great Silent "Spy Plane" used for observation of ground troops at night in Vietnam. Could fly at 1000 feet undetected and some pilots reported flights as low as 200 feet undetected. The Aircraft was equipped with a Night Vision Aerial Periscope and infrared illuminator. Some were equipped with Infrared Laser Designators used to indicate a target for a precision-guided munition.

That's more than I'd expect from such a little plane.
Excellent work!

Undetected by radar (that too I'd imagine, flying that low) or by enemy ground troops?

not only does Charlie not surf, but he ain't got no radar in the bush either :)
the engines on these birds were muzzled somewhat. and in the din of night in the jungle, it was often hard to detect due to this.
keep in mind that these were mostly used along the HCMT. so there weren't any of the sam sites or anything like that.
nice unit btw :D

I have read some reports that the YO-3A had "Radar Absorbent paint" and was not detected by Radar when its transponder was turned off. In truth, I rather doubt this as Radar Detection was not an issue when and where it was use in Vietnam. The YO-3A relied on silence and low altitude as well as infrared equipment for its stealth, observation and targeting.

But remember El Justo, you don't need SAM's if the plane is low enough.
I'm sure 37 and 57mm guns would do the trick at those low altitudes. Perhaps even small arms fire. It also looks like it wouldn't take a whole lot to down that, but I know looks can be deceiving.
Oh yea, great unit.... Figures I'd forget that part :shakehead:

During the height of the interdiction campaigns, the trail was defended against U.S. aircraft with an estimated 600 to 700 antiaircraft guns.

Bryce 5.5, the same program I use for my animations has a wonderful sky/atmosphere lab. Google Earth for some of the ground textures. Paint Shop Pro for editing (adding text and roundels/insignia) and format converting.
