Eight players with epic speed will be about 2-3 years to complete...
Are you sure you will have enough patience for this?

Shifty189
Apr 27, 2008, 08:14 AM
will it really? ok lets switch it to quick speed anyways. we just need some people that want to join.

burlicconi
Apr 27, 2008, 11:00 AM
Speed, I mean number of turns per day is decisive here.
There are PBEM games which have 2 turns in a week, while some of them are much, much faster, about one turn per day. Bad think is when somebody can not play his turns for a while. thats stop whole system...
Also, very, very important matter is to make good players order. You must get all players timezones and make good plan. This can speed up game a lot...

burlicconi
Apr 27, 2008, 11:03 AM
I'm willing to start new MBEM game, but my problem is that I'll go on a trip in about a month, and it will be last for about 11-12 days... So, that will be big delay.
But, if we have 5-6 players it will be great. I mean players who will be able most of the time to play his turn immediately when they get it ....

Shifty189
Apr 27, 2008, 01:06 PM
i couldn't aggree more! i would like to see the game go about one round per day, if everyone can do that i think it will go fine. about you going away for 11 to 12 days, how do you feel about having someone sub for you? it would just be fore that time. or depending on what everyone else thinks, we can just go 12 days without playing. either way we can work something out. just need more players!

burlicconi
Apr 27, 2008, 04:59 PM
When I'm at home, I played my turns immediately. If I'm not, I play when I get home, which means almost the same day, at least. With this speed, it can be easily one turn per day, sometimes more.
All interested players must leave their time zone, in order to make good turn- schedule.
Maybe is good to start another topic, with every detail?
I can do that, if you agree, of course?

I would like to be the female leader of the celts... I can't think of her name right now.

ok i got Shogu down for Justinian I , Atillathewin down for Boudica (Celtic), and I with Montezuma (Aztec). i think we said quick game speed.

Shogu, If you want to make a new channel go right ahead. i think we need to think of a name for the game too.

If still open, count me in with Tokugawa for example.
Playing from France, should be able to play nearly everyday.

Shifty189
Apr 28, 2008, 07:46 AM
perfect thats 4 now! one or two more and we can get this started. Unkle, you want Tokugawa (japan)?

please PM me with your email address.

after checking your profile i notice that you claim to only have the "original" civ 4. this game will be a game for BTS of civ 4. if you want you can check out my other channel i made for the original PBEM game that i'm also starting. http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/civilizationiv/show_msgs.php?topic_id=m-1-42667377&pid=919352

we will get that game started with fewer players since not as many people have only civ 4 now a days.

I would like to play, but some preferences must be defined now.
Tech trading off or on?
Also, barbs, with or without?
vassa lstates or not?
Size of map, standard, small or something else?

Shifty189
Apr 28, 2008, 08:32 AM
added Burlicconi as Hyana Capac (Inca)

Apr 28, 2008, 08:49 AM
I will update my profile. I do have all extensions. And would rather play a BtS game.
I'll take Tokugawa (most probably) but would like to know more about the settings. Depending on some of them (map type, size and speed mostly) I may adapt my choice :D

Shifty189
Apr 28, 2008, 10:46 AM
ok well this game we will all be picking those settings. the only one that we have in stone at this point is the game speed, and that will be set to quick. i think we are going to be going with barbs. i'm thinking maybe fractal for the map? and size is still up in the air. but here is the real question, do you guys want to have tech trading? this one we are all going to have to vote or something for it.

burlicconi
Apr 28, 2008, 11:41 AM
Tech trading needs much time for diplomacy. It can make game more fun, but can also spoil game if some players permanently ignore diplomacy...

unkle
Apr 28, 2008, 12:08 PM
Without tech trading, our options are more limited (and very much UU time-position dependant in the tech tree), because our best options are still military.
This is also #player dependant by the way. We have 4 players, how many AI do we want in ? On a standard map, 8 players seems reasonnable, that would be 4 AIs. Fractal is ok with me, should be less predictable. Anything else than Pangea would be better with tech trading on to me.

I'm interested in playing, but this is very disorganized. Please update your first post with ALL settings (leave some blank if you haven't decided yet). I'm still confused on what settings have been chosen.

One thing. Could we perhaps play Normal speed? Quick is just, well, quick!

Shifty189
Apr 28, 2008, 03:08 PM
ok AluminumKnight i updated my original post, i should have done that about 2 or 3 days ago. thank you for reminding me.

what do you guys think about vassa lstates? this is something Shogon asked about a while ago but we never did talk about it. i say lets turn them off for this game.

and about the speed, no i think we should keep it at quick speed for this game, but like everything else if the others want to speed it.....just let me know. majority rules.

Atillathewin
Apr 28, 2008, 04:36 PM
I would like to change to Bismarck, if possible.

Thank you.

Shifty189
Apr 28, 2008, 05:14 PM
ok so far we have Shifty: Montezuma (Aztec), Atillathewin: Bismarck (Germany), Unkle: Tokugawa (Japan) and Burlicconi: Hayana Capac (Inca).

if i am missing anyone or if you need to update please let me know.

burlicconi
Apr 29, 2008, 07:53 AM
For now its 4 of us... Maybe one more or two and we can start.
I would like Atillathewin to confirm that he understands the principles of PBEM games, only because he is new on civfanatics (he has just joined), and if has any doubts, just ask ;)

Shifty189
Apr 29, 2008, 08:16 AM
he posted on another forum and i explained it as best i could, but yes. Atillathewin if you have any questions please just ask.

so i still want to hear what you guys think about vassa lstates!

unkle
Apr 29, 2008, 12:12 PM
vassal states: sounds a small issue to me. I'd say yes.
And I keep tokugawa :D

burlicconi
Apr 29, 2008, 12:23 PM
As you ,vassal states are not big deal, but sometimes can be exploits during the war....

Also, we must make some deals, for example if player A is in war with player B, he can't give his cities to player C, in order to save them...

Shifty189
Apr 29, 2008, 12:58 PM
burlicconi this could be cus i have never really played a PBEM game before, but shouldn't those kinds of rules be made "in game"? kind of like in the real world? i mean if me and you are waring and you give my city's to unkle....couldn't i just voice how screwed up that is, and if anyone aggreed with me they could (if they wanted) step and say something to you, or even better yet attack you to bring order back to the world?

thats kind of how i have always thought about PBEM games. you know the player base picks what they will allow and not allow, not on the forum but by there strength in the game.

Shifty189
Apr 29, 2008, 12:59 PM
That makes 5 of us, i think we can get this game started without any more people. how many AI's do you guys want?

Atillathewin
Apr 29, 2008, 02:43 PM
Okay, it makes sense, maybe you should tell me how this goes since i'm a newbie.

Shifty189
Apr 29, 2008, 02:58 PM
i'll copy my reply to that same question that you asked on the gamespot forum.

well when you start the game if you go into "multiplayer" you will see a play by email option in there, so its all built into the game.

the way it works is when we get 5 or 6 players i'll start a game (and add everyone's civ & leader) then we all take turns taking turns. on your first turn you get to set a password (so that no one can move for you). there is an ingame SMTP (or outsoing mail) thingy where if you set your smtp server and it will send the game to the next player automaticly. these kinds of games normaly go on for mounths, so you don't have that kind of time then this isn't the kind of game you want to play.

in short, we all just take turns taking turns one by one, and emailing the game save to the next person in the game.

Guys, it's not complicated, it's very easy...
First, Shifty, is this vanilla or BTS game?
I will play in both cases, but if it's vanilla, I will change my leader to Qin Shi Huang then...
Second thing- seems to me that you never played PBEM before- it's Ok, once must be the first time. In that case,I can arrange game.
All we need is all players emails and probably smtp servers. SMTP can easily be found on the site of domestic provider.
You will receive save file via mail, and they you just play your turn. After clicking "end of turn" you will be asked if you want to send file to next player. If you want, you can do that, or you can manually compose email with attached save file.
All players also need to pick password, to be protected from other players....

I suggest that we all read THIS RULES (http://theoob.googlepages.com/pitbossrules.html) and then discus if someone disagree with some rule. Of cours, double moves and missed turns and similar things are not important here, since every player has predefined turn order.

Also, most important thing can be players schedule. It;s not problem if someone sleeps 8 hours per day and works 8 hours per day. He just can say "I probably can finish my turns in remaining 8 hours" or so... It's fair to other players and it will increase game speed.
You can check your time zone here TIME ZONES (http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/)
Then you just have to check when you will be able to play your turns.
For example, my city is Belgrade, so it's GMT+1, and I'll be able to play my turns from 11 AM to 12 PM (this is GMT time).
Of course, sometimes we have our real life (oh, yeah) and we can make small delay, but this is just to calculate optimum.

if you have some other questions, just ask....

burlicconi
Apr 29, 2008, 04:26 PM
Also, AIs are not wanted in multiplayer games, because they can make huge unbalance. We can play wit hAi, but I strongly recommend to play without.

Shifty189
Apr 29, 2008, 04:48 PM
This will be a BTS game.

Burlicconi i was woundering when you where going to offer to start this game. :) yes this is my first real PBEM game, so if you would like to start it all off i'm more then fine with that, i will just send you an email with everyone's email address that i got so far.

as for the rules you linked to, they are talking alot about having problems connecting, and needing the host to reboot the game (server). we don't have to worrie about any of that cus we are PBEM not pitboss. really the only parts that i think have anything to do with this game is the no rush before 3500BC, and the vacation thing. i have no problem with either of those rules.

P.S. my time zone is GMT -5 (Eastern Time, US & Canada)
P.P.S. ......Florida :)

burlicconi
Apr 29, 2008, 06:01 PM
PBEM principle "solves" many problems and that's the good thing.
I will start game, that's minor problem, we arranged many issues here.
I will start new thread, and let this thread stay for questions and deals about game preferences. When games starts, we will close this thread.
I call other players to give their times zones, in fact, their time when they will be able to make their turns most probably. We already picked civs, just wait for 1-3 players.
Size of map will depend of number of players, but we can agree- small with 5, small or standard with 6 and standard with 7. I think that is the best solution.
So, hope for a good game and best fishes for all ;)

Shifty189
Apr 29, 2008, 09:03 PM
Thanks for taking care of the organizing of the game. i'm shore your experience in this issue will help smoth many things over.

OK, but that will open new question- do we want to play with small or standard map? I think small will be just small, while standard will be a little bit bigger. I will choose standard....
You?

@Slaze: You can find all about this PBEM in THIS (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=273427) thread

I just got PM from Atillathewin, he is EST, and I think it is GMT-4.
So, He will be before Shifty in turn order, and I think that we'll have good schedule...

burlicconi
Apr 30, 2008, 04:28 PM
OK, turn order will be following:

I overlooked that Shogu said that his "best moments" are from 9AM- 13Am GMT +1, so I suppose that in this case the best schedule will be if put Shogu after Slaze. So, the best schedule, by my opinion is:

[1) Burlicconi GMT +1
2) Unkle GMT +2
3) Atillathewin - 4
4) Shifty - 5
5) Slaze -8[/I]
6) Shogu + 1

ok two things it can be.

1) you don't have BTS installed on the PC you are trying to open the save file on. or......

2) you don't have the newest patch.

if you don't have the patch you can download it from the game itself. from the main menu go to "advanced" then "check for updates". it will then check to see if you have the newest patch, and if you don't it will ask if you want to download it.

there is always...

3) You or Burlicconi have some mod on that we didn't know about.

Also everyone please post when you send the game so we know if the email gets blocked (or spammed)

burlicconi
May 01, 2008, 07:52 AM
You must update your version to 3.13.
Just go into game menu->options->check for updates and you will be updated...

OR, you can download manually patch from HERE (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=7412) and just install like any other patch... It's about 121 MB, so it's not such a problem....

Atillathewin
May 01, 2008, 04:55 PM
Okay, I tried to install the patch and this is what it said...

The setup has detected that version 3.13.000 of civ4 - bts is already installed.

This setup updates civ4 - bts to the same version that is already installed, therefore this update is not needed.

Do you want to install the update anyways.

Shifty189
May 01, 2008, 05:48 PM
i don't think i understand what your saying? is it asking you if you want to update anyways? if so, say yes. update and lets get going.

or are you trying to say that the patch is telling you that you already have the most up to date patch?

Atillathewin
May 01, 2008, 05:57 PM
I think its telling me I already have it.

I download this game off a website, maybe thats it?

May 01, 2008, 06:18 PM
Atilla, go to options in game menu and check about the version. probably you are patched, but version is still 3.00, and that's the problem, but we can solve that then...

Well, he was on this morning, but didn't reply in the other thread. Maybe he hasn't seen our discussion as all his posts as a CFC member has been limited to this thread. 7 would make a better number than 6 for a standard map if we can get everybody together. Although we have no idea if his problem can be fixed.

Atillathewin, tell us what's up. We're looking to start the game without you.

burlicconi
May 04, 2008, 08:15 AM
I started a new game. If atilla fixes his problem, I am sure we will continue our old game.
But, from my experience problems with .dll files are annoying. I was talking with him 2 nights before and i really don't know how to fix it.

edit:
DLL file is this: BOOST_PYTHON-VC71-MT-1_32.DLL
and this is about his build:
civ version - 301
save version - 300
build version 3.0.3.1 (77541)

From this I think he hasn't installed 3.13, but when he starts installation, it says that3.13 is already installed....

I send him some my saves for single game, and then it calls for .dll error...

If someone might know what's wrong, please help :)

p.S. I sent him my .dll file, and after that he hasn't respond...
