I do not usually turn on AIM unless I know I want to talk with someone - usually arranged by email beforehand.

I also didn't know Waku had volunteered to be subbed. However, it IS getting to be a rather long lag. You have emailed him, I guess? If so - umpires play on where you have the password.

If not - I shall email him for his passwords - AoA and WF volunteered them without too much effort on my part. That would be best. Otherwise, we ask Henrik to strip them or let the AI play his move.

In our roles as Umpires I think we need to start getting everyones password, and if we change a player we need to stay current on the passwords. My guess is that most of you do not have all the passwords for the games you are Umpiring in. And then we get into a situation like we have right now, where most of the games have come to a halt, so I would suggest you all spend sometime getting passwords in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks:D

I think that the time has come to declare Waku AWOL and find a replacement. At present, he's the only non-reliable player, and is robbing this tournament of the momentum it so dearly needs.

Sorry about the triple post...CFC has been a bit erratic the last few days and when I hit "post", weird things happen....

Actually, it's not that bad - and for the next 3 weekends, starting now, I should be able to play develop Civ without interuption as she stays at her sister's on babysitting duty.

I will look on AIM every time I connect. I am Patient1815.

As we have had (and will soon have again) some changes of personnel, I think it would be a good idea if we ALL sent our passwords again to the umpires of the games we are in.

Waku, I will do this for you, as I have your passwords now.

Please do this even if you did it originally, because emails can get lost. Of course, don't do it again if you have done it in the last couple of days.

Thanks...:)

Hey all... I've been off conquering exams instead of Europe, but they're all beaten now so I'm back :)

I'd be happy to fill in for Waku for a while; however, I'm not sure if I can permanently take that spot. I've come to realise that this tourney is rather a big commitment, and I'd hate to let all you guys down again :o ...

But then again, the two-month summer holidays have just started down here in Australia, so who knows ;)

My proposal is this and it has been discussed before in the thread.

Email after the turn, Bump at 48 Hours, Umpire plays at 72 h ours.

Guys do you all remember this? I believe it is really important that we all take a minute or so after our turns and email the next guy, a lot of the delays I have been discovering in the last couple of weeks is because folks dont realize it is there turn, I have a feeling this may really speed up the tourney.

And I for one would like to move forward before we get another series of complicated substitutions that gives me a headache and forces John to drink excessively...........

Thanks Guys, I would really appreciate this!:D

Darius,

Could you check you email is OK? I get this from my SMTP server:

Your e-mail is being returned to you because there was a problem with its
delivery. The address which was undeliverable is listed in the section
labeled: "----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors -----".

The reason your mail is being returned to you is listed in the section

The line beginning with "<<<" describes the specific reason your e-mail could
not be delivered. The next line contains a second error message which is a
general translation for other e-mail servers.

For one AOL doesn't let MSN work (probably on purpose). The new version 8.0 does allow MSN, ICQ, etc. to use its connection, but anyone with an old version can only use AIM

Patient English
Nov 26, 2002, 06:16 AM
I am registered with ICQ (although I don't like it), but I am ideologically opposed to MSN. My ID is in my profile, but I am happiest with AIM, and have recommended it for the tournament. My ID is on post '#2 of this thread.

As Steve says, I often don't turn it on, though, and for passwords, emails are better (you have a permanent record). I will try your other email addy.

To all

Im probally going to do one of my global bumps later this evening
0300 GMT or tommorrow morning 1500 GMT. If you are an umpire in Waku's games you should have the password and if its behind you need to umpire thru, and if you are late in one of your turns you need to play on. Hopefully Winterfritz will come back again soon and be able to take over for Waku. Waku told me on AIM today he is officially retired. Sorry to see him go he was pretty reliable after bumping up to last week, he told me he is just getting busy in real life, something about chasing girls. I wish you guys would all catch a regular one so we could get down to serious business with you all well focused in this tourney........:D

So check the threads, play your turns, and send an email to the next guy.

And begin thinking of how we are going to eventually replace Darius, he does not want to stay with the tourney for the long term, he is only subbing as a favor to all of us and I for one appreciate him doing this. So put your thinking caps on and lets find a replacement. OK?

Gotta run its glenlivet time! (John Ive been spending to much time with you in the threads, you're a bad influence on me!)

Here is the latest

#8. Voltar needs to Umpire for Waku-5days

#6. SAS -5days

The above two are the only ones I bumped to the top of the thread. (Are you happy Darius?)

#5 Darius -2.5 days

#3. Patient- 2 days

#2 Darius needs to umpire for Waku- 2.5 days

#4 Patient - 1.5 days

#7 Darius- 1.0 days

#1 Darius- 0.5 days

Now as you can see from this I even bumped myself after 3 days. And why? Because I did not get my courtesy email! And I forgot all about it. So please send the email when you finish a turn. And Darius I dont like doing it this way and I wouldn't be surprised if I screwed up something above, so until someone else wants to do a global bump every couple of days Im back to control panel jamming after this. Sorry but it is a lot easier for me and takes me less time. :D

Edit; Yep I screwed it up Darius is up in #5. Sorry about the confusion but between the kids and the ball in chain it is difficult to concentrate. Back to control panel jamming next time around, and if I get a chance in a few hours Ill send emails to the players at 2 plus days late. PLEASE EVERYONE SEND OUT A COURTESY EMAIL TO THE NEXT PLAYER AFTER YOUR TURN! Thanks!:D

The ball and chain thinks Im a sicko for doing this. But then she just doesn't understand, something about being to "Hormonal". :D

Ill be out of pocket for about the next 36 - 48 hours. Im driving to Green Bay Wisconsin to see the oldest rivalry in the National Football League the Chicago Beas vs The Green Bay Packers at the NFL's most hallowed ground Lambeau Feild. Ive wanted to see this game at Lambeau all my life, well at least since Ive been a kid. And I finally executed two individuals which is just about the only way to get tickets to this game. Thought I'd post here as well as the #5 thread since it'd get more attention here. Someone has been using Lazyciv in game #5, and as far as I can see you all agreed not to use it. No change to policy. LazyCiv is not to be used.

We can load each save game going back until we find who did it, or they can own up. So please own up and save me the work!

No sanction this time, but they must promise not to do it again. It is unfair for some to use it, and others not.

Darius some of the guys were using lazy civ as usual when the tourney started then for various reasons it was decided not to use it any longer. Hence the "i have stopped using Lazyciv as well". So it was used here in the past but is now disallowed or unallowed, or whatever the term is.

Darius
Dec 03, 2002, 04:20 AM
Well then is it a possibility that people just forgot to rename their cities after the agreement was made? On closer inspection I'm noticing that the only city names affected are French and Russian ones, while many long names in other civs are untouched. This makes me think that perhaps those two players just forgot to rename the affected cities after the agreement.

However this can only be verified by seeing whether the names have been screwed up since the first turn, or just recently, and I'm too lazy to look through them.

Aravorn
Dec 03, 2002, 04:34 AM
Well I would check out the lazy civ violater, but it is not in my union contract, I was strictly hired to Bump, and thats what I do! So until you guys renegotiate my union contract forget it. Someone else needs to check.:D

Gentlemen

The following is my post #172 from Boney 2:

"Sorry John, being the very hierachial (is that a word) guy that I am I consider you the boss as the overall tourney coordinator, umpire or whatever you are. That is just me. Spent to much time in the military, chain of command and all that.

My whole point being that it is going to be a real pain checking my cities every turn to make sure I dont build a palace, I guess I could wait till I build one and then sell it but it would be quite a waste of sheilds, which with a major war going on I can not afford to waste.

Whatever all decide is OK by me, and we have time, since I just played my turn. I just dont want to have to do a lot of work correcting this less than desireable AI.

I think we ought to reconsider this for the tourney as well, someone else is bound to lose there capitol sooner or later and this issue will resurface again. Wish I would have known the AI was going to do this when I essentially made the initial decision.. Thanks!"

And Johns post #173 from Boney 2: "Ok, well as Boss, I reckon we are all happy for you to let the AI build that Palace, Steve. Waku has voted by not voting, if you see what I mean. "

Since we all voted for it Im going to let the AI build the palace this turn as it seems to pick a different city every time. So if you are against this you had better speak your mind before my next turn. Im just bringing this up again because I dont want someone to make it an issue AFTER the palace is built.

Also I believe we need to consider whether this is allowed tournament wide or not. Sooner or later someone else is going to lose a capitol and this will come up again. My vote is to let it be OK to build a palace. As a mater of fact my vote precisely is we all change the one word in the rules text to let us build the palace where we want.

Questions, Thoughts?:)

As people are now allowed to continue, I guess it should be allowed for everyone.

So far Ive only been asked for passwords in two games. We need to do this folks! Thanks!

"Computer crash!!
My computer is out of order at the moment. It literally started to burn when i installed a new RAM chip. This is caused by a manufactor error on the "ram slot" in the motherboard. So i need to replace it completely.

It may take 3-4 days to do this and i cant play any games untill then at the earliest.

In the Bonaparte Games, the umpires should play for me. Allthough i'm unable to supply the passwords needed. Or you could wait for me if you feel like it.

And the same goes for the other games. I promise i will be back as soon as possible, and i hope that will be before the weekend. But i cant make any promises, except that i'm doing my best getting a new motherboard that doesnt suck

Copied and reposted from Game #7 thread:

Steve,

Your counterattack was not only fair - it is exactly the best British
reposte to an invasion. (Including the Naval blockade - top marks!) If the French pile too may troops in where there are no NonCombatants, it is their risk, and they may lose such a stack as you describe. In the real world, it wasn't French invasion that was so impossible, it was the logistics involved in supplying and re-inforcing the invasion in the teeth of the Royal Navy that stopped Napoleon.

Darius is correct, you cannot have a stack on a city square, underlying the city. If the city goes, the square is unstackable until re-built upon or fortressed.

Please play on. This is totally within the known game mechanics, both of my scenario and Civ II generally.

While we are on the subject - if anyone, as a tactical ploy, pillages a stackable square they think an enemy army is about to move into so they can wipe them all out in one counterattack if their enemy doesn't notice, I would have to rule that this is again within the rules and is a valid Civ ploy. However, I think it is against the spirit of the game, so please don't do it.

Steve's dilemma is different, because the way Civ works forces him to take advantage of the absence of stackability, and not to do so would give him a maasive disadvantage.

Well in my defense I had nowhere else to put them. ;)

Anyway my opinion that I voiced to Steve was to go ahead, but it seemed worth discussing since the 'one attacker for one defender' realism of this scenario really is lost. You're correct, the destruction of entire stacks is part of CivII and should be acceptable, but on the other hand the stackables are part of Bonaparte II and the realism is lost when that change is gone.

If he said 'I had 15 units lying around but I only needed one to kill your stack', I wouldn't lose sleep over it. But from his own words he had about two or three units left nearby after my attack, and he wouldn't have taken Dover had it not burned.

IMHO it should be considered bonafide cheating. In the 2194 games here we agreed to officially ban it.

Well I could just as easily say that doing so would put me at a massive disadvantage. ;) I wouldn't necessarily call doing it taking unfair advantage of a limitation of the game engine, but I would say it'd be a nice courtesy to not attack them. I can confidently say that if I were in his position I would leave the stack be, but if he attacks it I won't be mad. Kudos to Steve for at least asking though. :goodjob:

I think we will have to accept that there is a certain risk in stacking too many units in one city.

I remember at one time in the game i play as France i had over 50 units in one city, just prior to the invasion of England. Imagine the brits landing and razing the city?

1) I'm glad you agree that putting more units than a city has citizens, where no Non-Combatant improvement exists, is a risk taken by the attacker, and the defender can wipe them all out fairly if he gets the chance. Bear mind: (a) Non-Combatants take only one move to build and are cheap and (b) if you expect an immediate counterattack place your defenders OUTSIDE the city. Also, the situation of all troops surrendering in a city DID happen, especially when the city burnt.

2) I am happy to rule that pillaging forts is out. Pillaging roads and crops is totally fair though.

3) I vote Yop is allowed to take over from Waku. I am playing in a Colonies game with him at the moment - although be warned - he has a mischevious sense of humour!

If you all post or email me your agreement, he is in.

No actually in the context it was used and to help us all maintain our sanity it is good.:D

From the Webster's AMERICAN Dictionary. (I say that because the British and Americans are two peoples separated by a common language.........:mischief: )

I believe John intended the second definition in the dictionary which reads: "irresponsibly playfull (-behavoir)"

And for this thread that is a very good thing........:mischief:

And welcome to diatribe and I can vouch for him, he has been reliable in the PBEM's I have played with him. So John consider this a yes vote for diatribe.

b) I did move all of them outside the city, but coincidentally about 7 of them had no more movement points.

I will send Yop Waku's passwords tonight. Diatribe, please send me you email and any AIM ID so I can post them at the top of this thread. Yop, I have your email, but not any AIM ID you might have.

And Darius,

a) Of course you can't rebuild them in a city that goes back and forth every single turn.

No you can't, but you should fight outside cities until you have build non-combatants. If your troops have no movement points left, don't ship them in over and above the citizen size of the city. If I could make Non-Combatants non-plunderable - or even an automatic part of a city's attributes, I would have done.

And Diatribe replaced Darius who replaced that other guy, what was his name? Oh AoA or something like that.

And the best way to get ahold of YOP is via PM, he does not check email that much. If you need to send him an attachment make sure he knows he is going to get an email.

Good point. Keep it under the rug by all means, but it would be amusing for all of us to hint at it: E.g. "This summer, British engineers have been touring or factories, offering advice on possible improvements..."

No obligation, and if you wish to hint at a trade that never happened, to worry an enemy, please do so.

Like I said in the welcome email I sent, sneak attacks and deceptive diplomacy are all within the spirit and the letter of the law for this tournament. That includes what you say in your posts. Of course, if you are caught out in lies too often, no-one will listen to you any more...

As for the fires; the weather is now more favourable and there are now a hell of a lot of fire fighters in town.
It sure beats this time yesterday when the smoke was so thick it was like midnight in the early arfternoon, and 70 knot gale was blowing the fire from hill to hill. On the other hand it's still really smokey, and the fires are still burning in Canberra's western suburbs (I live in the middle).

It's good at the moment. The wind has dropped and the smoke has finally lifted revealing some really shocking damage to the hills and mountains around us. The nearby fire I was so worried about on Saturday seems to have been a lot less serious then it looked, so that's good news (as Alexander's Horse writes in his 'poly thread, if the wind hadn't droped from gale force strength it could have gotten very ugly though).

The city's now crawling with about a thousand fire fighters, who are pouncing on any flare ups. Yesterday from my driveway I watched a big Navy Seahawk helicopter repeatedly waterbomb nearby (500-1000 meters away) hills in order to put out smoking stumps ahead of a wind change, and later in the night I saw about a dozen fire trucks stomp out a minor grass fire.

In more good news, the internet is reliable again, so I should have my saves up in a few hours. :)

I have some friends in Oz - in the Yarra valley. Are there any fires there?

Not that I've heard of. There are some very nasty fires in the Snowy mountains which have blanketed Melbourne in smoke, but there's no imminent danger to populated areas in Victoria.

If you ask John NICELY he may add you to the list.:D

Well I just thought it was expected I'd be glad to playtest; I've helped with around 4 new scenarios lately. Anyway Sti mailed it to me within 30 seconds of my post so nah. :p

So yes, Voltar, and no SAS, I don't mind.

However, if you can offer some constructive - or better, destructive criticism - please do so. And if you have any neat graphics or sounds to share, yours or ones in the public domain you know about, please tell me.

Ok well my main qualm in the scenario is 1/2 movement on roads. I really prefer 1/3. And I don't like how its 2 month turns. The game progresses very rapidly. And where is the logic of moving units so slowly. Think about it. Did it realy take a french infantry two months to march the equivalent over 4 squares over quality, major roads?

I'd also like to see more amphibious units. I don't like how only the french have amphibious capability. The british should have it, and so should everyone else. At the very least on the Grenadier units. Also cavalry are not very potent. It is extremely difficult for cavalry to dislodge infantry, even unfortified on regular terrain. Just try and defeat French infantry on grassland unfortified with dragoons. Gonna have some casualties...

I'd like to see a stronger showing from the ottomans is it at all possible to have them actually do something? Rather then surround their own cities and fortify. The stckable tile makes it hard. Dunno how this can be fixed, but thought I'd say my opinion.

Anyway I can't really think of anything else on the fly now. So more later. But still John an excellent scenario, you should be proud of the work you've done.

Cavalry wasn't all that powerful in combat. Trained infantry with good morale were ususally able to defeat cavalry in most situations. The areas which cavalry excelled were scouting and finishing off forces on the brink of destruction.

OK Case and Voltar, I think you may be talking at cross purposes. Voltar's post looks to be about Bonaparte II, which is on-topic for this thread, but not the feedback I was looking for - which was for Colonies IV. Although Case's comment on the strength and role of cavalry in the gunpowder age is relevant to both.

Is that right? By all means post Bonaparte II feedback here - although I'm unlikely to change much except obvious "bugs" now. I perhaps will start a thread for Colonies IV soon - I just didn't want to before I had a good idea of when it might be finished. I field about 5 emails a day asking me when it will be out as it is....

Patient English
Jan 21, 2003, 01:03 PM
To answer some of your Bonaparte points, Voltar:

1) So did infantry move 3 times faster on the dreadful roads of the time than over open fields? I think not.

2) The two-month turns were to give some hope of finishing the scenario. With that number of units, a move can take an hour if you're the French, English or Russians, particularly if you're being careful, like in MP. All of Civ has this "two months to go 100 miles" problem. Show me a single scenario that gets this right.

3) There would be very few amphibious units at all if I didn't want to encourage a French invasion attempt. Big amphibous landings in the face of the enemy did not happen in 1803. 1944, OK.

4) If I had 8 civs to play with the eighth would have been the Turks. In sone Napoleonic Scenarios it is. However, on this map the Swedes make as much sense, and how could I face Henrik if I dropped them..? ;)

Soon I hope Case, I love the French and Indian War as we know it in the States. And I have played the heck out of Empire. Have you ever tried that one. I really enjoyed that scenario in SP.

Make the Ocean smaller and the ships can have less movement. You might be able to fit it in that way.......;)

I don't think the roads we're all that dreadful. Consider these roads. in Europe, they are quality roads, many paved. The ones connecting major cities at least. Im thinking that for Infantry to march through grass, with various trees, the slight hills and even walking through farms often is significantly harder then on a road.

I still think you should revert to monthyl turns. In singleplayer I found the amoutn of turns rather insufficent. But alas it is your Scenario which gives you the right to do as you please.

Maybe one day I will finish my scenario which has been in development for many ages, and will also bask in the power to freely decide how everything works and then impose it upon others. Of course if people are like me they modify the scenario to their hearts content. Every singleplayer scenario I play I change a bit more to my liking. The one scenario I hardly touched was Red Front & all I did there is change Red Army HP from 1 to 2 in summer times. It seems like a strong effect but it's that major, because all these units which may fall to the Red Army defenders are re-created...

Patient English
Jan 21, 2003, 01:25 PM
Voltar, for SP, you are welcome to change the number of turns. I will send you the basegame save from which scenarios can be made, and a few simple instructions. Shuold take you no more than an hour. Tell me if you want me to.

I don't agree about the roads, though. :D

Patient English
Jan 21, 2003, 01:29 PM
Walking though mildly hilly or broken terrain, you might average 2-3 miles per hour (including rest stops, etc). Along a good road, fit troops might manage 4-5 miles per hour. Add in 10 hours per day for cooking food and sleeping, and the difference is 35 miles vs 63. I reckon 1:2 ratio of roads to open terrain is OK.

*cough* The British invasion of Egypt involved a sophisticated and large scale opposed amphibious landing ;) *cough*

As such, I agree that British infantry should have the amphibious flag.

I like the roads movement - while it may force units to move slower then they did historically, it does prevent blitzkrieg campaigns.

British Invasion of Egypt? What year? There appears to have been some sort of British defeat in Egypt in 1807, but I can't find out much about it. Is that what you are refering to?

I see the British army of that time as "sea-mobile", but not amphibious. This was true of the French as well, but their infantry's amphibious attack was included for reasons of play-balance, as I said. A minor raid by a few hundred men in boats was very different from landing whole divisions in the face of the enemy. For that, you needed a port.

Of course, landing on a stretch of desert over a day or so, and with all your supplies, then drawing up in battle to face the enemy later, would be possible. As would driving away the defenders with massive naval bombardment - but that's what Bomb Ketches are for....But I just can't imagine many thousands of men storming ashore through the surf with their flintlock muskets against an enemy drawn up in Divisional strength at the high tide mark. Not successfully, anyway..;)

In March 1801 the British landed a force of 16,000 in Egypt at Aboukir Bay. The force spend five days off the coast but unable to land due to storms, with the result that the French were well dug in along the shoreline. However, despite heavy casualties the British assult wave was able to break through thanks to the support of gun boats operating in a way remakably similar to the invasions of WW2.

IMO the balance would be improved if either the British infantry have an ampbibious assult capabilitiy, or if the French infantry lose this capability.

Sounds like the British Navy (Bomb Ketches in my game) cleared the way. In any event, my inclination would be to take away the amphibious capability of the French Line units, and perhaps leave it with the Light (although both were trained much the same by 1803). The Brits might have a Marine unit, but they already have Highlanders for that.

His computer has been on its last leg for a while. He lost his CD drive in November, and his computer is OLD. And he may not be the fastest player but he usually posts when he has a problem like last friday. So Im thinking he maybe having computer problems. Therefore he cant even get to the websites to let us know what is going on.

And my guess is no one who is umpiring has his passwords. (Except for me of course in Boney 6.)

In my opinion, the Land units should be disbanded since they no longer have any ship to transport them. Thats how it is in real life, and in the "unstackable" games as well.

What's happened to Diatribe? Is he just on holiday, or has he been eaten by zombies?
