View Full Version : Garry's Mod
Bigfoot3814 Apr 23, 2008, 05:23 PM Has anyone tried it out?
I've always liked games (or parts of a game) with no predetermined goals or objectives, so I figure I'll like this a lot.
Friends of mine have mixed feelings though. Some say it gets old real quick, or that it takes too much time to do anything cool with it. Others think it's fantastic.
Anyway, I'd rathter not spend the ten bucks until I hear from someone else. Whadaya think?
Edit: I have the orange box
Maniacal Apr 23, 2008, 05:25 PM It's pretty awesome, but i have been a bit too lazy to really learn how to use it. As well I havn't had a printer for a long time so I can't print out guides (I'm NOT alt tabbing in game).

The only guides there are come from the official site's wiki, which is pretty extensive. alt tabbing in a game is never a good idea.
Maniacal Apr 23, 2008, 06:58 PM Yeah. Oblivion crashes when you try to alt tab, or won't alt-tab again. Tried it once with GMOD and it crashed.
Some games though have no problems with Alt-Tabbing, like X3 Reunion.
Harbringer Apr 24, 2008, 02:51 PM I don't have any trouble alt tabbing oblivion, but what is Garrys mod?
Synsensa Apr 24, 2008, 03:14 PM Garry's Mod is a mod for Half Life 2 (or any other game with Steam content, for that matter).
By the way, I made a thread about this game a while ago, but meh.
I got my Gmod-10 for free from a friend, but I'd say it's worth 10 bucks if you are sure you're going to use it for a long time.
Check out the downloads site for it if you do get it, awesome things there.
Darth_Pugwash Apr 24, 2008, 03:50 PM Pretty cool comic made with Garry's Mod: http://www.hlcomic.com/view.php?date=2005-05-01
Helps if you've played Half Life 2.
Kan' Sharuminar Apr 24, 2008, 03:56 PM :goodjob: I loved Concerned. Dunno why I didn't think of it myself with this thread.
CivGeneral Apr 25, 2008, 07:36 PM Dont have Half Life II.
Plus, I dont like mods that are Payware (I heard Garry's Mod 10 is payware where older versions are freeware, though they may have gotten rid of the older versions)

It's payware because of all the possibilities and the work put into the actual mod.
Captain2 Apr 25, 2008, 07:39 PM yeah concerned is great, its the reason I ended up getting the Orange Box

The guy who wrote concerned is also currently working on a story of life as an NPC in Oblivion, I found it incredibly funny

You don't need Half-Life 2 (although you need to own the games to use content from that game in Garry's Mod). AFAIK any of the Source games are sufficient for Garry's Mod (just need one).
Half the measly $10 goes to VALVe I believe, because they gave Gary greater access to the Source Engine.

10 dollars (not counting Half Life 2 which is requires for base functions, but you can get that for free from someone with the Orange Box legally) is a bargain when you consider how fun it can be.
I paid it, and I never buy things online.

The sad thing is that nothing really worth downloading has been put up on garrysmod.org for the past couple months besides the Engine mod :(
ironclad May 08, 2008, 11:33 PM ^^^^^^^ Very true. I wish garry would release some good gamemodes...
I really want to make a Civ mod in Garrys mod. There already is a RTS prototype here: http://forums.facepunchstudios.com/showthread.php?t=348242
I figure that the new rules in Civ Revolutions could be a good base for it. I am pretty backed up now and haven't learned the hooks in LUA but hopefully someday soon.

Yeah, it's mostly been construct maps.

He implemented LUA in the engine so he wouldn't have to.
Maniacal May 15, 2008, 11:46 PM I wish there were more TF2 SWEPS.
Synsensa May 16, 2008, 07:50 PM Yeah, it's mostly been construct maps.
And even those seem to be failing. Quality of maps and other stuff = downhill for Gmod...
Captain2 Aug 11, 2008, 11:10 PM I'm thinking of getting Garry's mod as I've heard good things about it
Since I like to get opinions before I buy things, would any of you recomend or see a problem with it?
CivGeneral Aug 11, 2008, 11:35 PM I actually got it not to long ago and serves as a basis for my comics that I do in the DYOS. As well as my avatars and recently made a wallpaper.
Maniacal Aug 11, 2008, 11:54 PM It's only $10, so I'd say buy it and have fun. It's great for "Caption this Picture" threads.
Bigfoot3814 Mar 08, 2009, 03:03 PM I got Garry's mod a while ago and it is lots of fun to make silly stuff with. I heard there are some good things to download though, something called "phoenix mod" or something like that for useful items, etc.
Anything else I need to know? I would also like some dinosaurs please.

You're going to have to put them in your addon folder in garrys mod. If it did not came in an addon format. Create a new folder and extract the files into it along with an info.txt that can be copied from any addon.

Some things don't go into addons.
