The A-8 was one of the first monoplane aircraft of the US Army Air Corps. It entered service in 1932.

Sweet Attack Aircraft! :goodjob:
This all metal low wing Monoplane was a Very Big Deal when others were flying Biplane designs in early 1932. The wings were externally braced with struts and wires for the Curtis A-8 "Shrike" which was a design taken from earlier Eras. Designed specifically for Ground Attack, it had a 600 hp Curtiss V-1570E Conqueror water cooled V-12 engine with a fixed pitch three bladed propeller and a top speed of 184 mph. It generally carried four 100 pound bombs up to 488 pounds total and was fitted with three forward firing .30 cal. Browning machine guns and one rear firing .30 cal. machine gun for the observer's cockpit. The Observer's cockpit was also fitted with flight controls in case needed.

Interesting aircraft. The A-8 was used by the 37th Attack Squadron of the Eighth Pursuit Group based at Langley Field, Va., and the Third Attack Group based in Texas. The 11 A-8s were not followed up with a production order. Forty-six improved versions were ordered as A-8B, but this order was changed to the radial engine-powered version with the A-12 designation.
The era of the single-engine attack aircraft was also coming to an end. The Air Corps staff gradually began to favor twin-engine attack aircraft that were similar to the light and medium bombers being developed in the closing years of the 1930s.
