i present here today my first public Civ3Conquests "Story" :)

it is based off of TCW Fifites, a mod for Civ3Conquests that a few CFC friends and i have developed.

as the title implies, i'm playing w/ the US :goodjob: and i'll try and keep a turn by turn log as i've grown accustomed to in the SG games. of course, i'll plug in screens and the like :D as well as side info and period related themes (1950s).

now, this scenario is very deep. so it has many, many more layers to it than regular civ3conquests epic games. so i will try my best to explain things as i go (and i'm happy to answer questions, too).

here is some key info before i begin the log:

Difficulty level: General (aka Sid)

- 31 total civs

- 264 total turns in the scenario; base unit of time equals two (2) weeks, 1950-1960

- it's a no-raze game. see info on the no raze patch for more details.

- no settlers, culture flips, changing govt types (they're locked), barbarians, or air and sea trade

- Conquest, Domination, Victory Point, and Space Race victory condition in effect

- 28,000 total VPs needed for Victory Point win

- 66% population and terrain needed for Domination victory

- Reverse Capture the Flag is in effect; the "raw materials" unit is the Flag Unit

- any friendly unit with an A/D value can "capture" the raw materials units

- five (5) pts awarded each turn for occupying a victory point location

- one (1) pt for each safe return and redemption of "raw material" units

- Retain Culture on Capture

- Movement Rate Along Roads: 6

- Food Consumption/Citizen: 1

- Preserve Random Seed is in effect

- City Sizes: town 1-24, city 25-49, metro 50+

- AI Default Difficulty Level: Deity

- Minimum/Maximum Research Times: 3-10 turns

- Chance to Intercept Enemy Air Missions: 80%

- Cities Needed to Support an Army: 3

- Battle Created Unit: Great Leader

- handful of great wonders available to all civs that grant +2 free techs

- three (3) total eras; seventy-six (76) total techs

US @ General level (aka Sid)

Week 1 1950

lots of 1st turn housekeeping is in order :) i set all of the city builds, send a few air units on patrol (recon), fortify all land units, send some civil eng's on some public works projects (roads & highways), and anchor my fleets.

the USN is a monster :) i've got piles of capital ships like iowa class BBs, baltimore class CAs, essex class CVs, midway class CVs and various fletcher class DDs and its variants.

i set all cv-based fighters on CAP (combat air patrol).

Order of Battle (OOB) in München:
US Inf divisions x 3, Airborne x 1, M3 halftrack btln x 3, M24 Chaffee tank x 1, M26 Pershing x 2, 105mm arty bty x 1, 155mm x 1, M7 Priest SPG x 1, M40 155mm GMC x 1, USAF Garrison x 1, Skysweeper 75mm AAA bty x 1, M-16 AAA MGMC x 1, B-29 squadron x 2, F-84G squadron x 1, P-80C x 1, P-51D x 2, Civil Eng x 1

set all jet fighters on CAP.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IBT
negotiate RoPs w/ Canada for access to my USAF/NORAD airbase at Goose Bay, Turkey for access to Incirlik AB, and w/ the Italians for access to my AB in northern Italy.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 3 1950
FAC off Japan spots the Soviet Navy off the Republic of Korea:
Gnevny class DD x 4, Ognovoi DD x 4, and Whiskey SS x 5

now, i'm not worried in the least about the soviet surface vessels. they're crap and my fletchers could run circles around them...but it's the whiskeys that scare me.

USN proponents in the State Dept have been clamoring for us to ramp up our ASW capabilities. Forrestal himself has mentioned of the growing gap w/ our actual ASW capabilities in the Atlantic and Pacific and the soviet subsurface threat. it is our carrier groups that the subs are after. so it'll be imperative that ASW activity be vigilant and i guard the CBGs (carrier battle groups) sufficiently.

Kirov class CL x 2, Chapayev CL x 1 spotted near the Kuril Islands, north of Japan.

PV-2 Neptune patrol over the Kuril Islands reveals a healthy soviet air force build up:
Be-6 Madge maritime patrol aircraft x 1, MiG-15 bis x 2, MiG-9 x 2, Pe-2 x 1, Pe-3 x 1, Tu-4 x 1, Yak-9U x 2, Soviet Airbase Garrison x 1

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IBT

borders expand around San Juan, Puerto Rico. must be the Bacardi distilleries

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 5 1950
continue air patrols and civil eng builds.

the soviet naval squadron off of S Korea parks there...but doesn't block the straits entirely. they're in my territory though (Japan). one crappy Gnevny DD seems to be trying to break out from the pack. i seal off the route w/ a fletcher DD and a gato SS.

i earmark Main Battle Tanks as the first tech (3rd in line). it'll let me build M-46 Pattons which are a nice upgrade over the existing lot (M24 & M26).

http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/7378/tcw20epic28aprcpd0.jpg
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IBT
Ivan demands 81 gold and i give it :(

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 7 1950
Philly and Tokyo riots (?) i MM a clown for each city (both 'calm down' nest turn).

a few city imp builds come up --> i set initial ones to build iron and coal mines mostly...w/ some Heavy Industry stuff, too.

continue routine air patrols.

http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/1513/tcw20epic28aprdmm2.jpg
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IBT

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 9 1950
shift a few lower 48 city builds to science (uni's). Airbonre Warfare tech in 2 turns @ +12 gold/turn (30% science/0% happiness).

Washington DC OOB:
http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/8412/tcw20epic28aprejj7.jpg
F-86A x 5, The Bomb x 6, M-16 AAA MGC x 2, M-4A3E8 x 3, 120mm fixed AAA brty x 2, 155mm arty bty x 1, 105mm x 1, M3 halftrack btln x 3, M40 155mm SPG x 2, M7 Priest 105mm SPG x 2, US Airborne x 1, US Corps x 1 (army unit), Green Beret Btln x 1, US Inf x 3

Chpt 1 cont'd

Week 11 1950
i complete a few homeland city imp builds and continue to mix the new ones w/ +shields, +culture, and +science.

culture expands in Munchen.

and a shot of a typical CBG (carrier battle group) for the USN:
http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/7984/tcw20epic29aprlq6.jpg
from left to right and then clockwise - USS Franklin Roosevelt CV (midway class), USS Wisconsin BB of the iowa class, USS Roanoke CL (worcester class), a fletcher class DD, a balao class SS, a sumner DD and gearing class DD, and then the USS Des Moines CA and the USS Pittsburgh CA (baltimore class).

now, i could probably add another DD or 2 into the equation to boost my ASW capabilities...b.c Ivan will absolutely make me pay if i get hung out to dry. lots of firepower though. the Midways have a fantastic complement: AD-1 Skyraider X 5, AJ Savage* x 1, and F9F Panther x 8

*nuclear stike aircraft - US's main tactical nuclear strike capabilty, expends like a normal nuke in civ3

more air patrols performed and roads built.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 13
our scientists unlock the secrets of Airborne Warfare --> Int'l Orgs in 3 @ +15 gold/turn

Philly riots again  and sources say that Phillies fans, the local major league baseball team, stormed the the gates at Connie Mack Stadium and demanded ownership to finally put a winning team on the field :D as a result, 2 citizens are flipped to clowns.

Tokyo riots, too. locals are claiming that MacArthur's men have been chasing after the Japanese chicks and starting fights in the bars. 2 citizens are converted to clowns.

a few more patrols performed and some roads constructed.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 15 1950
Houston and St Louis riot. each gets some citizens converted to clowns.

Philly and Tokyo both calm down.

i'm trying to avoid ramping up the entertainment slider...in an effort to maintain a surplus each turn.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 17 1950
Detroit riots  Havana, too...so i boost entertainment to 10%. fortunately, i can keep a surplus (+1) and maintain max science.

Tokyo, Munchen, and Frankfurt each pop a regular US Infantry division. i send one to Osaka and 2 to the airbase in Italy.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 19 1950
Portugal detect the USS Trumperfish SS (balao class, ie a modified gato class) off her coast. i ask for an RoP and get it.

our scientists unlock Int'l Orgs --> on course for MBTs in 3 turns
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 21 1950
various city imp's are built in the homelands. i mix the new builds w/ +shields, +culture, and +science.

USS Trumpetfish skirts the Portuguese and Spanish coast.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 23 1950
we're now full-fledged NATO memnbers :)
http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/2874/tcw20epic29aprbzc0.jpg
granted, NATO was really formed prior to 1950. however, for gameplay, it's available right at the very front end of the tech tree.

Okinawa starts to build an AD-1 Skyraider. this is the 1st carrier-based air unit build. now, replenishing the CV air units will be a pretty heavy task once the proverbial turd hits the fan. by this i mean that the attrition rates can often be heavy. so restocking the losses - at some point - will be important. so i'm going to try and get the jump a little by starting a Skyraider build.

the US road net and population base continues to grow - +195 gold/turn, 30% science, 10% entertainment
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 25 1950
USS Trumpetfish continues her world tour and greets the French w/ an RoP :)

MBTs learned --> Anti-submarine Warfare in 3

Quantico Marine Base pops a USMC unit that we airlift to Sapporo.

a few regular US Inf builds set in the homeland.

USN maritime patrols reveal 3 crap russian CLs making their way into the Pacific Basin.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 27 1950
our first B-36 Peacekeepr is spawned in Seattle :groucho:

http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/8219/tcw20epic29aprcwb6.jpg
82nd Airborne!!

Coal Mine in Chicago spawns the game's first "raw material" unit (ie flag unit that is 'captured' and 'turned in' for VPs).

US Mobile Arty I wonder in Wash DC autopro's M52 105mm SPH.

Royal Navy squadron of 2 CLs and 2 DDs fire their guns in salute to the USS Trumpetfish...and the officers of the ships negotiate an RoP

USN officials activate 2 CBGs in the Atlantic. the USS New Jersey BB and USS Missouri are the flagships and they're enroute to Iceland for patrol in the N Atlantic.

it appears that the Mexicans have been conducting some armored exercises (a singfle M-4A3) on the other side of the Rio Grande :)

i peel off a few balao class SSs from the fleets. they can operate independently and they also don't hold back the other sea units in the stack (balao's have 6 mvmt while surface vessels have 8).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 29 1950
several more city imp's completed in mainland cities --> mixture of +shields, +culture, +science.

(!) a crappy soviet Chapayev class shows up in American waters of Los Angeles. i activate the CBG near Seattle and immediately trail it.

i rebase the B-36 to our airbase on the Azores.

i send a few more balao SSs into the Atlantic and Pacific.

hi Tasslehoff :) i've been thinking of you lately actually...with your mac issues and all. now, i saw a post in the civ3 mac forum about how macs don't or can't use the same file directory reference paths that windows has. by this i mean that -- from what i gathered -- a scenario search path might get bunked up w/ the macs. and this might be the issue for you. specifically, there's a scenario search path for the TCW files and it tells your computer to "look" for the files. evidently, there's a breakdown at times for mac. i don't know why but maybe AlanH might be able to explain it more.

Minutes from the Military Briefing by the Joint Chiefs

Monday 13 August 1950

the China Hands in the Defense Dept had been aggressively pursuing a policy of intervention on behalf of Chiang...however, with his defeat and fleeing to Formosa, their arguments have been falling on deaf ears. nonetheless, it's been concluded that Mao does indeed present a problem in the Far East. and many have been whispering: does the US perimeter of defense in the pacific extend past the Japanese islands and onto the Korean Peninsula? did Acheson get it right when he declared that the American perimeter extended only to Japan? this may very well set a dangerous precedent for Stalin and his cohorts. the 7th Fleet can do only so much...and war with China would mean hundreds of thousands of boots on the ground.

Admiral Leahy has been pining for better ASW capabilities in the face of the increased Soviet subsurface threat in both the Atlantic and the Pacific. now, the key is: where do we find the funds to bolster our anti-submarine warfare skills? do we undertake new construction? where will the USN get the funds for such an endeavour? there will surely be Democratic opposition to any increase in military funding. Senator O'Neill from New Jersey (R) has bounced around a proposal that calls for not new construction of destroyers rather a Fleet Rehabilitation and Modernization (FRAM) plan that would save taxpayer dollars and at the same time utilize the massive existing stock of WW2 hardware that was evidently bound for the scrap yards. Leahy and Forrestal both seemed intrigued by the idea. according to O'Neill's estimates, the program would cost a fraction of new construction (23.5% to be precise) and if implemented, it would refurbish the piles of Fletcher, Gearing, and Sumner class destroyers that are lying around and add up to another 20 years of service life to them. the new ASROC asw weapons system could be added as well as the addition of asw helicopters. high ranking memebers of the Admirality seemed pretty enthusiastic about the proposition.

the SCB-27 program - or the modernization of the WW2 Essex class aircraft carriers - proceeds as planned. it is estimated that the next refurbished Essex class CV, the USS Essex (CV-9), is set for sea trials in January 1951. the Essex is then expected to join the 7th Fleet in Japan.

It is nice to see some of the Splashes I made, hope the others enjoy them also.

Tasslehoff I think the difficulty finding the search path may be the key. I did find this to help you out. Mac Civ Patch (http://www.macgamefiles.com/detail.php?item=19275)
Provides a Universal Binary for both the Civilization 3 Complete and Play the World applications.
Fixes error "Load Error: Error Reading file: Missing Entry in: Game Data\text\PediaIcons.txt"
Fixes instances where game would sometimes fail when completing research, giving an error about missing Civilopedia entries or other strange behavior.
Custom scenarios (such as the SGOTM at civfanatics.com) are now properly found if placed in "~/Documents/Civilization 3 Complete/Scenarios" (searched first) or "Conquests Game Data/Scenarios" (searched second)

Minutes from the Military Briefing by the Joint Chiefs ~~ Cont'd

Monday 13 August 1950

Vandenberg, CSAF, has been calling for increased USAF presence in West Germany. his officers on the ground have petitioned him and his staff for additional fighter squadrons dating back to early 1949. the common theme is that we've received intel from our spies in the GDR that the Red Air Force has restructred the composition of its fighter squadrons and the overarching air defense networks. some estimate that Uncle Joe has added 4 additional MiGs to each squadron thus bringing the total strength up to 24. this means that the composition of each Soviet fighter squadron in the GDR is 20% larger than our USAF squadrons.

it is therefore recommended that 6 additional F-86A Sabre squadrons be transferred to West Germany by mid 1951.

it is further recommended that development on the F-86 Sabre jet fighter model be accelerated. this should include ground attack variants and also the possibility of lisencing for our allies to build, too.

Monday 13 August 1950

intercontinental strategic bombers need to be top priority for the USAF. production of the B-36 Peacemaker aircraft, the world's first true intercontinental bomber, is currently underway. these massive birds are the tip of our proverbial spear when considering aerial bombardment. Uncle Joe can try as he may but he has nothing that can match this aircraft...yet, at least.

of course, there are some troublesome shortcomings attached to the Peacemaker. and the main one is the piston-driven propulsion of the B-36. now, in the so-called Jet Age, this may pose a problem. therefore, it's recommended that all future scientific efforts in the advances of long range bomber aircraft be put toward devlopment of a jet powered intercontinental bomber rather than one powered by propellers.

in the meantime, we should utilize the well-seasoned B-29 and B-50 air fleets as they both possess decent payload capacities. however, they remain susceptible to interception by enemy jet aircraft.
