Bigfoot3814 Apr 30, 2008, 09:24 AM Is anyone else outraged? Valve took a perfectly balanced game and ruined it. After playing last night, no one is interested in playing the game anymore. It's basically dissolved into the game of a million medics purley to get the achievements. Nobody even cares about the new maps or anything.
And with the weapon leveling thing, the game is no longer based on the skill of the player, but on number of hours played. Once everyone has leveled up, new people will have no chance of having any fun.
I really hope they recall this one. I'd hate to see my favorite game degenerate into stat padding that often plauges Battlefield 2.

Don't worry, it will be like this for a bit but then people will go back to playing other classes. This is exactly what I thought would happen when it was released.
Good thing I won't be playing it until Friday, less medics by then hopefully.
I feel bad for one admin on my fav server, he almost had 10,000,000 heal points and then they lowered it to one million for the achievment!

Anyway in the games I played the only difference when it comes to people playing medics before the patch and after the patch is teams actually have enough medics on the team. I have not seen excessive use of medics.

I made it into the valve test serverlast night. Each team had at least 12-13 medics at all times. No one was even trying to play the game, just get the achievements. A heavy ran towoard me puching and yelling "don't kill me, please, I have to get the achievement!!" I shot him pretty quick. I think the game is suffering right now. It was even goldrush! Nobody even cared to try the new map out for real.

In my first game on Goldrush there were these two guys who were trying to get an achievement while the rest of the team was fighting for their lives and losing, they eventually gave up and decided to help, but it was still very annoying.

Darth_Pugwash May 01, 2008, 05:39 PM Been playing Goldrush today and it's pretty crazy. It's pretty much constant, chaotic action circulating around the bomb cart which can result in some really tense moments when the bomb is afew feet away from a checkpoint with only thirty seconds or so left in the round. Much fun :D
Unlocks though I think are a bad idea. Achievements are a cool side feature, but weapon unlocks I don't like. Grind along with the mediswarm and get a somewhat different saw? Ugh, no thanks. I'd rather have all the content available right off the uber-bat. Thankfully the unlocks look to be fairly well balanced so they shouldn't be too big of a deal, but still. :sad:

The unlocks don't seem to be better, just different. I still don't like the idea though. I want to know that I kill (or am killed) because of skill, not an unlocked weapon.
Maniacal May 01, 2008, 11:20 PM Well, even an unskilled player can easily kill you with quite a few weapons vs classes.
(IE critical melee hit on a pyro)

In the league I play in (ETF2L) you get no crits, so the upgraded needlegun is definately an improvement. I must say the medic craze seems to have died by now.

Ah yes, interesting map. Not bad, could be tweaked a bit though.
Anyone played Oil Rig? Its got a zillion passages, half of which are half-circles and are rather pointless. If those were fixed though it would be an even better map.

Ugh, turbine. It's an okay map but I HATE it when it has more than 16 people playing and more than 1 sentry gun per side.
Actualy that's the same for any CTF map.
For custom maps, you just have to find a good server. The one I play on usually has good custom maps, occaisionaly a new map isn't that great but it's removed if it's not popular.

The Orange X v6 map is a bit rubbish really. The overhead ramp and the dispensers everywhere make engineers and heavies a lot less useful as they can't hide.

The main event of the week is the Pyro Update, which will be made available this Thursday and contains three unlockable new weapons for the Pyro plus 35 new achievements. In addition, two user- created maps are included to highlight the great work being done in the community and distribute those works to all TF2 players...
Meanwhile as folks wait for the Pyro Update to be released, the latest in the "Meet the Team" video shorts, "Meet the Sniper," will be made available tomorrow (Tuesday, June 17) at 11 am PDT along with a web site dedicated to the Pyro update.
Finally, to give everyone a chance to try the new weapons and community maps, Valve will hold another Team Fortress 2 Free Weekend via Steam, a leading online platform for the delivery and management of PC games. The Free Weekend is scheduled to begin this Friday at 11 am PDT.
This is great as I wasn't expecting this until at least July. Pyro's my favorite class though there will be little reason to play it since everyone else will be.

Shabbaman Jun 17, 2008, 07:20 AM I'll be a total lamer and camp in an achievement box if the unlocks make the pyro playable in 6v6. The axtinghuisher isn't worth it though, hopefully the melee weapon is the last unlock (like it was with the medic).

I have the flare gun, which is really good, and the backburner, which I guess is neat but I don't use because I like the airburst too much.

I think it's officially called the compression tank, but it's a new addition to the standard flamethrower. Right click and a big puff of air shoots out the front. It doesn't do any damage, but it can reflect grenades and rockets back at the enemy. It's really awesome. No more cheapo demoman kills. When you reflect a regualr grenade (not a sticky), it changes to your team's color, so you can kill a demo with is own grenade. It can also be used to push people around; helpful when spies run up on you or if someone is standing on an edge.
It eats up ammo really quick and has a kind of slow recharge, so it works without being too spammy. One of the downsides of the backburner is that it doesn't have one of these.

I don't think the pyro wave will last as long as the medic one did. The acheivements are much easier this time around, and you don't even need to get all of them.

Darth_Pugwash Jun 21, 2008, 02:04 PM Pyro really needed this update as Pyros sadly tended to be quite ineffective before. Hopefully now they will be a threat rather than a muffled flamey annoyance.
Meet the Sniper was excellent, too. Probably the most well made of all the 'Meet the..' videos.
Be polite, be efficient, have a plan to kill everyone you meet :cool:
Maniacal Jun 21, 2008, 02:07 PM They weren't a threat before because people didn't use them effectively. I myself and I have seen others use them to great effectiveness, and ubered pyro is a force to be reckoned with, especially when you have both an uber and kritz on you!
Darth_Pugwash Jun 21, 2008, 04:44 PM Even when used properly they were usually not as useful to the team as a Soldier, Heavy or Demoman would be in the same situation IMHO. Problem was that even when ambushing they would frequently get gibbed with a couple good rocket blasts and die without being able to make any meaningful impact (and I think Valve have recognised this with the Pyro buff that has come with the Pyro pack)

I'd take the air blast any day. The backburner is really good, but I like bouncing rockets and grenades so much more.

JtheJackal Jun 26, 2008, 12:26 PM I just want this Pyro thing to stop. I haven't been able to play a Pyro for a full round since the update. Whenever I do select a Pyro at the beginning of a map three or four other people still select the Pyro after me. Even when no one on the team is playing a Soldier and Demoman.
I can't even play a Soldier anymore because that was all I was playing at first to try to keep the teams somewhat balanced and I'm sick of it. I don't remember how long it took to balance out the medic update, but for this Pyro fan its been too long already.

sirtommygunn Jun 26, 2008, 07:37 PM I absolutely hate the backburner. +50 health and a critical from behind results in me dead in half a second and not being able to do anything to fight back at all. I really dont see too many situations where id prefer the original flamethrower over the backburner.
I like the axtinguisher, mainly because its a bit hard to use (if your on fire your probobly going to run.)

Maniacal Jun 27, 2008, 12:30 AM The flare gun is just fun :) I've acctually gotten kills with it, but it is mroe of a situational weapon, as the shotgun is far more lethal. sirtommygunn, you need to learn how to avoid turning your back to pyros then.

However, Soldiers, Demomen, and Medics are best countered using the compression blast (medic because you blow him away from his protection/ubermate)

Backburner crits when facing front is fixed in today's update. Also, heavy is confirmed (http://www.teamfortress.com/) as the next class getting unlockables.
With airblast it got a lot easier (as in: doable) to defend the last cap on gravelpit. I like that, a change for the better. I don't use the backburner because in 6v6 crits are disabled anyway, so I rather practice with the airblast.
BTW, shouldn't this thread be merged with the old TF2 thread?

I don't know, this is more just about what the updates are bringing, rather than gameplay and such.
I really want the heavy to have brass knuckles for one of the unlocks. For whatever replaces the shotgun, I guess they can just go crazy. I don't know what will replace the minigun, though. Maybe less HP more firepower?

Shabbaman Jul 03, 2008, 07:28 AM I saw a mockup of a Bofors flakgun. It'd be a nice change, the rapid firing with the large spread v.s. the slow firing weapon with large splash damange. Unless the grenades would go really fast it'd be very simiilar to the soldier's rocket launcher though.

Do you think it will be around for another 10, 20, years or even longer? I wonder because there are some games I still play that are 5 years old or more and I worry that games I buy on Steam I might never get back if, for some reason, Valve shuts it down or something.
I bought Civ 4 + BTS through steam even after buying vanilla civ4 retail (I gave it to my brother after I bought the steam version) so I have put a lot of trust into Steam and I would love to see more developers and game makers take advantage of it and other outlets like it (Stardock games like Sins of a Solar Empire is a good example of this).
Anyway I didn't want to make a new thread just to hear some thoughts on that. :)

It's good for downloading and the automatic updates are convinient. I mostly like it for the friend system, that makes it really easy to meet up with people in-game.

Anyway I was reluctant to again purchase a game on steam vs buying retail box, but in the end I bought Rainbow Six Vegas on steam :)

I too prefer buying the boxed copies, here at least they are on par with the US prices, although I have bought games via steam since they were cheaper and a hell of a lot easier to find. (San Andreas, Half-Life Anthology, Red Orchestra). Although the auto-update isn't always a good thing, but at least with STALKER it only updates it to 1.005 as there aren't any mods for 1.006.

I love the game the way it was meant to be played but when my team is 8 heavies all farming achievements then the game tends to get a bit dull. Valve also has a habit of making the updates coincide with free weekends which in theory is a good idea but it doesn't really give potential players a good idea of what the game is about. I'll be happy about the update a week after it's been implemented.

@Mulholland: Yeah, you can stop being Captain Obvious now. I'm getting tired of hearing people say that over and over again (although I do agree). I'm seeing this as an oppurtunity to practice sniper, spy and maybe some medic.

That problem can be fixed just by changing what server your on. I agree that restricting classes is generally a bad idea, but on instant spawn, goldrush/dustbowl servers, not even a good uber or two will be able to get through 3 or 4 sentries especially if there is a couple of snipers, demos, soldiers or pyros for support.

The whole balance of the game was that there was always a way through.

Either your problem with the game was because of the servers you played on, or you aren't making yourself clear.

I managed to get a team of 8 to do a heavy rush on gravel pit today. We managed to cap out faster than the pyro rush we'd just done, then held the other team to 0 caps on defense. :D

My problem was with unbalancing a game that was perfectly and fine tuned balanced in the first place. At the time I quit, majority of the servers had some kind of silly unbalancing mod in place that made the game lose its appeal for me, you could argue that there are plenty of servers, and while that may be true, I don't feel like getting destroyed on a server with a ping over one-hundred. And please don't suggest that I just "get better" or some fallacy like that, I obviously opted to just leave rather than adapt to all the undermining.

I love the support this game is getting from Valve, it's completely excellent.

I also somewhat like arena mode for two reasons. One, the lumberyard map puts a foot into something outside of the wild west theme we've seen in all the other levels. Two, arena mode works even with only 6 or 8 people on the server.
So Foot approves of this update.

I tried to do the crit rocket thing to another guy so I could get mine, but apparently, the other people in the room are too hair-brained to understand the request "Please don't kill me, I'm not a bot." I ended up quitting due to frustration.

Rasputin is actually very easy to get, you just have to make sure you survive long enough as defender until you get backstabbed by a spy :lol:

Most serious clans won't let you just join and require a tryout of some kind. Either that or if they see you playing on thier server and are impressed with you in some way. Some use some kind of a system where if you put an astersik next to your name or signal in some other way, it means you are looking to join a clan.
If you really want to be a part of a group, the best thing to do is to just get together your friends who have the game and start your own. That's exactly what my [CNS] is.

The only thing lame about it is that the weapon selection is a bit weak for the USMC (especially engineers) and some slopes are unrealistically unclimbable. And apparently you can steal the Heavy's Sandvich. And the Scouts "Pyromancer" endurance style achievement is called Race for the Pennant, and requires you to run 25km.

Holy hell. All those conspiracy theorists on the TF forum couldn't have been right all along, could they? When the Pyro hears about this she'll be inconsolable.
So the spy get's two new cloak watches, a pocket watch that allows you to leave a fake corpse and are cloaked for 8 seconds, and a new watch that recharges only when you are standing still.

I was wondering if that part was a hint of future gameplay. That was actually funny, and explained why the 'good guys' were the blue team.
It was a good screenplay overal, but I would have given it more props if the spy was the Heavy. No one suspects a heavy! I always suspect scouts since they naturally have the potential and need to run to base for a heal.

Downloading only one game can be like 5-10 gigs. Spending an evening watching videos on YouTube or trailers of random stuff can quickly get you up to 1 gig for that one day. Add to this the fact that we have 2 computers on the internet and my girlfriend likes to download episodes of TV shows once in a while and you have a situation where 20 gigs is good only for like 2 weeks. I'm probably going to upgrade my internet when my contract renews... But I'll have to pay like 60-70$ per month to have something respectable like 60 gigs. Yep. I know you have that much for like 40 or some crap, but what can we do. Just get r*ped more and more.

It tells you how many megs a game will take up on your hard drive but doesn't tell you the size of the download (no, they're not really equal). And for patches, at least, I don't see any obvious line anywhere about the number of megs they require me to download. I think they should really make this information obvious.

So we get random upgrades by license serial number? No earning or choosing them again? If yes, sounds lame (as in CCG lame).

Rub'Rum May 23, 2009, 12:31 AM Meh, I didn't really feel like I was working much for these achievements. I think the achievements should just be there for fun, and possibly unlock cosmetic things or I don't know what. I'm not a huge fan of achievements being tied to gameplay effects.

I wasn't the greatest fan of the achievement based unlocks, but this system actually seems worse. Apparently you can get items by sitting in spectator mode. :crazyeye:

1. Weapons are unlockable only via playing the class, either through kills, time, healing, etc.
2. Achievements are left by themselves as a sort of "Gamerscore", much like Xbox Live in the sense that they're simply there to show your skills.
3. Get rid of the atrocious sin of unlocking multiples of each weapon.

The ambassador, kill someone at a long distance with the regular pistol. Kritzkrieg, have someone you uber fire a critical shot.
or even better, since they want to make it easier for people to get them, just GIVE EVERYONE THE WEAPON.
Apparently VALVe is giving us multiple items because they will implement item trading.

Yeah, pretty much this... As for your examples of easy things to do, at least maybe do it 10 times. Kill 10 people from behind and you got the backburner. There. Basically, if you play as a pyro for a couple of hours you'll have it.
JtheJackal May 23, 2009, 07:11 PM Unlocking the weapons based on class playtime or a specific achievement are great ideas! I wish they had done this instead of this meaningless gathering of equipment. I felt accomplished by getting the unlockables I got before the current update.
Bigfoot3814 May 23, 2009, 09:02 PM I got a huntsman after about an hour. Some people were saying that it took them up to 12 hours to get their first freebie. I also saw a scout running around with no hat on! That took me by surprise.
I actually kind of don't mind this new system. Yes it's cheap, but then again, I'm cheap, and I hated having to get achievements to get stuff.
