View Full Version : Most fun of the new BtS Civilizations?
a4phantom May 09, 2008, 08:26 AM Getting the game this weekend. Who should I play as first? I'm a warmonger who highly values science, so I'm looking for a civ suitable (but not necessarily optimized) for that kind of aggressive but enlightened strategy:mischief:. What do you thinK?
Genv [FP] May 09, 2008, 08:31 AM Dutch or Holy Roman.
Holy romans are practically invincible during the time they get landsknetchs, and the Dutch have a cool traits ( Though their UB isn't very useful )

The Mighty Vikings (Rangar).
Edit: On a second thought he might not be new to BtS though.
I never had Warlords so he might be in that one.
Either way, play Rangar :)

I hope I can remember my Charlemagne: Let my armies be the rocks and the trees, and the birds in the sky, and the landsknetchs.
The Mighty Vikings (Rangar).
My very favorite civ to come out of Warlords ;).
matthewthegreat May 09, 2008, 08:45 AM Are you looking for a good civ or leader? if you are look for a good leader try Darius I he is fin/org
Financial = Lots of money
Organized = a lot more money and a large empire
If you really want a cool civ try unrestricted leaders and go for Darius I of the Holy Romans
a4phantom May 09, 2008, 08:48 AM You guys really know me - the Persians are my favorite Vanilla civ. But I want to get started with the new BtS Civs.

You'll like the new music :)
Anyways, If you meet Pacal II who I haven't tried, Get him to annoyed or furious vs you.
His antics are hilarious.

It can actually be overpowering on a water map. :D
nbcman May 09, 2008, 10:19 AM Try the Ethiopians-Zara Yaqob. Oromo Warriors (musketmen UU) are a great UU-plus they start with Drill 1 + Drill 2 promotions that remain when the unit is upgraded. Drafted Oromos :goodjob:

You are out of your mind ;) if you think the dutch UB isn't awesome, I'd even venture to say it is the best UB addition in BTS. The Dutch turn into an absolute production powerhouse late game even with sup-optimal cities.
jackdog May 09, 2008, 10:43 AM I would agree with Darius beeing great to play, the early immortal rush is just so satisfying, but has to be very early, and then the cash just keep coming in. Even on Monarch if you are lucky, and really beeline rifles, you can have rifles up against longbows and maces and you don't even need to bother with reducing city defenses much as the odds are so good.
I barely play him anymore as its seems like cheating. Good to learn the new expansion with though
AfterShafter May 09, 2008, 10:46 AM Sitting Bull. Love that guy.

Seconded.
Sitting Bull. Love that guy.
The best thing when you play Sitting Bull is that you won't face Sitting Bull. :p

The Dutch UB is extremely strong. Think a coastal city with rivers. You can cottage spam while keeping a very good production rate, in that case it is OP. The bad side is that it is rather situational.
ICNP May 09, 2008, 05:35 PM Dutch on Archipelego... playing now just got Steam Power. Looking over how many water tiles I have makes me so happy. 2 F, 1 P, 3 C on each coastal tile is just amazing. Wish I still had the collosus.

Joao II has replaced Monty on my list of " Most annoying pathetic leaders "
Metal Alloy Man May 09, 2008, 07:46 PM Holy Romans(good traits, build up an empire early on, spam Rathauses and then go Landsneckt crazy), Byzantines( great UU, good for culture victories).
omnimutant May 09, 2008, 08:12 PM Hard to say which is best because everyone has there own tastes warmonger or not. I suggest to fire up a few small land mass/few Ai games and test the new ones out for yourself.
My Favorite Leaders Over all are:
Suryavarman of Khmer
Ragnar of Vikings
Sitting Bull of Native Americans
Willem van Oranje of the Dutch
and Charlemagne of HRE.
Of all of the Civ's that are good, and there is a lot of those, there are a few stinkers out there especially for warmongering IMO. Stay away from Gilgamesh of Sumerian, as his UU's are horrible. I also don't care for Pacall II of Maya for the same reason(although it's neat that all of his pre modern troops have a different look to them).
Those are all personal opinions so don't judge based on my experiences. Hopefully you'll find a few you really enjoy playing.
sabo May 09, 2008, 08:17 PM Double post, please delete.
sabo May 09, 2008, 08:20 PM Any aggressive or impirialisted civ works for me. But try Ceasar first, I think my first win in BTS was with Caesar, he has an overpowered UU, which if properly promoted is useful all the way to riflemen.
bddp May 09, 2008, 08:49 PM The Mighty Vikings (Rangar).

Indeed. Or play his evil twin Ragnar. He's good too. :crazyeye:
Firestorm94 May 09, 2008, 09:08 PM Byzantines are great for religious wars and general warmongering along with their Cataphracts, the knights' equivalent to praetorians (12:strength:) are murder for enemy units
say1988 May 09, 2008, 10:56 PM I love the Dutch. The only problem is they are quite situational. Extremely powerful when they have lots of coast, while on land maps their UU and UB are pointless.
My first BTS game was Dutch on archipelago. I got wheat, 2 seafood, Iron (or possibly copper) in my BFC with ~12 water tiles, and a river through most of the land ones at my capitol. Maoi and Dike created one heck of a city.
Portuguese are pretty good on archipelago, too. You get first dibs on any unpopulated continents and with a financial leader and a feitoria, their coastal cities can be quite rich (if only the feitoria was available during early overseas expansion). The Carrack is also a great UU on a terra map.
But, yeah it really depends on how you play. I prefer archipelago and island maps and like to be an early builder and late game warmonger, so those are great civs for me.
InFlux5 May 10, 2008, 10:13 PM If you've played this long, and posted here 1700 times, I doubt we can offer anything you can't figure out for yourself. ;)

Oh, you'd be surprised how slow a learner I am. But the point is that I don't have BtS yet (waiting for a copy to reach me in Korea) and I was curious which Civs I should play first. I have a real job now (unlike in 2004-2006 when I posted 1,650 times) so I don't have time to play them all through.
Churchill 25 May 11, 2008, 01:59 AM well for BTS the best new civ to try would be the dutch. With a good leader, good traits and well they are pretty good
for new leaders, i would play as Charles de Gaulle. His traits are Charismatic and industrious. You cant get much better than that.
a4phantom May 11, 2008, 02:39 AM Wow, it's not every day you see Churchill commending du Gaulle!
pxpdoo May 11, 2008, 07:19 AM Boudecia, as India. Powerhouse, you rock at peace and at war.
killmeplease May 11, 2008, 07:37 AM as for me, Sumeria is best for warmongering. Their UB allows to conquer a vast empire very early in the game, so further develop and domination will be easier.
Duraska May 11, 2008, 10:24 AM Boudica's traits seem pretty good for warmongering. I think the Celts start with Mysticism too, so depending on your difficulty-setting, and your starting position, you might be able to snag an early religion, giving your economy a boost (or just conquer a holy city).
Churchill 25 May 11, 2008, 11:50 AM Wow, it's not every day you see Churchill commending du Gaulle!
yeah its rare i know
lovetramy May 11, 2008, 07:36 PM Boudica of Rome ? :D lol
jkp1187 May 12, 2008, 09:01 AM Hannibal/Carthage. Financial for the science, Charismatic for the military.
Ricci May 14, 2008, 10:17 PM I would play Maya or Sitting Buill (native american sounds idiotic for a civilization name). They are two of the strongest civs in the game together with the Inca empire; provided, of course, you play as a very aggressive early warmonger.
IronicBuddha May 14, 2008, 10:34 PM ;6804631']Joao II has replaced Monty on my list of " Most annoying pathetic leaders "
No, I welcome Joao as a neighbor because he builds cities for me, and ensures that they are right up against my borders - less settlers for me to build the better. Sitting bull however, that guy.. ugh... :nuke:

Joao II demands every tech you get, making you get -1 every time. Which makes him annoying.

Never had him as a neighbour (that lasted long enough for me to care), but when left alone, Joao (and Sury) seem to do fairly well.
Kranden May 14, 2008, 11:37 PM Dog soldiers are pretty good Sitting bull is not bad.
