View Full Version : Grinding Out The Late Game
pxpdoo May 10, 2008, 04:58 PM Was going for Diplo or Space, no chance of Conquest or Domination...
On Emporer (this game) I'm sure as Hell not going to win by any victory other than time.
I've never won this way before. Any thoughts?

pxpdoo May 11, 2008, 09:29 AM Well, guess I know why "Time" isn't one of the popular threads, now lol
Only won by a little bit, but at least I won. "Emporer" isn't as much fun as it sounds like...
CoZe May 11, 2008, 10:00 AM erm, its emperor.

My fingers always automatically type Emporer also, and it looks wrong and I have to correct it. :D
djvandrake May 13, 2008, 12:34 PM I'm in the same position right now BUT I always turn off Time victory.
I'm only on prince (yeah, I know, but I'm learning) with a Huge map and 14 other civs, Marathon speed. I've fought J. Caesar and Catherine to a standstill. Practially the entire planet hates me (because they're vassals of Caesar and Catherine) and because I've razed a dozen cities in this game from the various civs and vassals. I've eliminated two civs and have been at war with EVERY other civ except Hannibal who is my good pal. He's wedged between Catherine and Boudica so he'll be in a world of hurt soon.
The space race has begun, and I'm behind. I haven't started Apollo yet and Caesar and Catherine have already completed it. (I was busy building battleships, transports and marines. I razed two of her cities before she could mount even a token response. I charged her a big pile of gold for peace).
I'm torn between trying to catch up in the space race or just nuking Catherine off the face of the earth. Thoughts?

 You can win any of the victory types on emperor.
My last one was a diplomatic victory on emperor in isolation, in 3 hours 30 minutes (epic speed, standard map size and civ count). Micro doesn't take that long, you know.
Even the domination/conquest games I play are almost always 5 hours or less.

How can you finish a game that quickly? My games take about 12 hours on standard/normal, and even then I forget about important micro tasks until a few turns too late . Plus I'm on vanilla, so no espionage, AP or random events to worry about. I'm sure this game would be much more fun If I could play faster...

The more you do it, the less you have to think about what you're doing.
Speed is just a product of repetition, really.
sylvanllewelyn May 14, 2008, 11:05 AM Or time management. My huge deity conquest win was done by playing 1 hour each day for 2 months. You press enter machanically once you have the game in the bag, but if you're still struggling towards the very end, then it's fun, not tedium. I think I played like a handful of turns everyday during the stealth bomber stage. And remember to take notes.

Exactly. I played games very rapidly even from the start. I screwed up tons, but I also got used to the hotkeys and game patterns to the extent that I could play quickly. It doesn't even feel like I'm rushing when I play, although because I do still make mistakes, I've had the game since xmas but grad school has kept me from playing tons and tons.
pxpdoo May 16, 2008, 09:28 PM Well, having won on Emp, but hating every second of it, I've taken those lessons back down south. Monarch is fine with little ol' me. :crazyeye:
