Doing his best to staunch the flow of blood while seeking out a healer for the two of us. "Healer, we need a healer over here!". Glances down at Stuck in Pi while trying to help staunch the flow of blood for him too.

The bodyguard stands up and calms the masses with his piercing gaze. He then begins.

What is the truth, son of the captain? The truth is, I will not begrudge this accusation of yours. I have sworn to the captain that I would protect you; that is something that will not change, unless you display to me decidedly evil traits. But I do not think so. Evil need not pass down from one generation to another. I believe you to be good.

I do not believe our beloved captain was always an Ashen Veil cultist. When he first picked me off of the streets, there was an essential goodness about him. Only a good man could have picked a nobody to serve him, and only a good man would have allowed me, a man lacking in manners and grace and even formal training, rise up and become his bodyguard.

The Nightingale was a beautiful ship. And the captain told me that it had lost its glory: he would do anything to regain it. And I thought that it was just a figure of speech. I will admit: I was probably blinded with my love for the captain.

Did I notice the captain change any? Sure. I thought at the time it was just stress. But now that I know he's an Ashen Veil...was an Ashen Veil member...I think then that the signs, though not perchance, obvious, perhaps were there, to any who suspected him. But how did you expect me to catch it when you yourself did not? I am sure others in here would excuse you, Kol.7, of hiding your own father's status. They will say that you have his blood, that you yourself will be predisposed to such behavior.

He stops, then thinks of something and says it.

I shan't accuse anyone in the moment; the only thing I am certain of right now is my own innocence.

He then sits down again, visibly stressed at the implications of Pinman's status.

Tasslehoff
May 25, 2008, 12:06 PM
No. There are far too many coincidences concerning Niklas for his innocence. I admit that my previous votes against him was more of a personal vendetta, with mostly logic, little evidence. Yesterday, I'm sure some of you received messages from D'Artagnan, and perhaps others, claiming that there was evidence of Niklas' guilt. But now, the death of D'Artagnan, who had been the second to vote in the lynch votes against Niklas seems to reinforce Niklas' guilt. Two days ago, Niklas survived by bandwagoning on an innocent. Yesterday, he used some mysterious power to escape death. But today, he shall escape no longer.

Niklas, you have escaped death for too long.

The young shaman-in-training crouches down beside Methos and Stuck in Pi. With him is a cloth satchel. From it he pulls an assortment of mysterious items of different sizes, all wrapped carefully in linen. He begins to unroll them all. Soon he is surrounded by a pile of various bundles of herbs, jars of pungent pastes, brilliant feathers, and colored stones. He pushes them all to the side and takes up the strips of linen. With them he fashions a crude tourniquet for Stuck In Pi's leg and a bandage for Methos' arm. He mutters angrily as he works.

One vote for LightFang, one vote in support. Sums up to zero. Worse than useless, the pair of them. If I didn't know better, I might almost think they were trying to orchestrate a distraction.

The sarcasm in his voice is obvious. He finishes his ministrations and sweeps his various gewgaws back into the satchel.

You two still need a true healer, if there is one to be found.

He stomps off along the beach (as well as one can stomp in heavy sand, anyway), trailing a string of "bloody idiots"es and "we're all doomed"s as he goes.

(OOC: The satchel and stuff aren't actual "items", just roleplaying.)

Izipo
May 25, 2008, 03:51 PM
Good thinking there Renata, you probably saved both of their lives.
I'm really worried about the blood loss. Look how pale they both are.

Focusing her attention on Stuck in Pi, she brings out a leather bag from her robe.

I need a basin of hot water, quick.

While taking out various items from her bag and laying them between her and the stricken SiPi, she's calmly singing a soft chant in an unknown tongue, much like a prayer.
As soon as the basin of water is brought she starts to blend in various potions, powders and herbs. After a bit of mixing, a strong and sour smelling brown paste is produced of which she applies large patches on what remains of SiPi's leg, soon covering the whole stump. When she's done, and after testing that the paste has hardened, she removes the tourniquet in a quick gesture.

Must not leave them too long, those tourniquets, else you see your patients dying the slow death, because of the blood poisoning. But you did save his life.

Now, let me tend to poor Methos. And after I'm done, I'll think about what's going on.

Midday 5

Although the events of the past day had traumatized the Nightingalers, by midday they had somewhat recovered. Thanks to quick intervention by Izipo and Renata, Methos and Stuck in Pi were saved, although somewhat scarred.

With this revival from the doom and gloom attitude, several survivors began raising concerns about the possible presence of "others" on the island. On that note, a short hike was arranged with representatives of all the remaining families taking a trip to scout the small island. After a full morning of searching, the following conclusion was reached:

Pinman is not basing everything on Lost even though it is one of his favorite shows. No there are no other people on the island.

Activity seemed certain to pick up throughout the afternoon, as without an item vote, only accusations occupied everybody's attentions. Nothing could distract them- except perhaps the ever present song of the Nightingale.

How many people use IM to communicate with each other about NOTW? I do, and I know a few others do. It really does add to the fun, making it much easier to talk, plot and scheme with other players, what NOTW really should be about. So I've decided it might be a good idea to keep a list of NOTW players' msn/yahoo/google addresses in the NOTW information thread, similiar to what the NESers do in the NES forum. The adresses would be coded to protect them from spam bots so d/w about that. I'm pretty sure just changing the @ to an & is enough although if someone wants to correct me on that, please do. Anyway, I really do suggest that people do this, because it adds a lot to the game, as I'm sure plenty of others will confirm. There are usually at least some people online every evening, and while PM has its uses, you really can't have a proper conversation on it. If anyone want's too have their IM added to the list please can you post it in the Info thread. Thanks.

Yesterday, he used some mysterious power to escape death.

This argument doesn't make sense. The "mysterious power" saved us all from going to the Lands of the Infernals, so if Niklas was the bad guy, why would he save us from our deaths?

bandwagoning on an innocent.

I am beginning to wonder if we our all innocents and the only evil among us is Captain Pinman. He is dead, yet not. He is AV, as we prooved earlier today, so why would he help us or want us to survive? I'm thinking that Captain Pinman set this all into motion as a game for him to enjoy. I believe our true adversary is Captain Pinman and only him.

To think that the captain was a member of the Ashen Veil, this sure does change things. First of all, there is something else I wish to settle. Someone here has seen it fit to steal my forge away, while I was sleeping last night. That is why I think LightFang is up to no good. He has already admitted to having a shady past, so I wouldn't put it past him to steal things too.

Izipo
May 26, 2008, 11:05 AM
Hmm, rumors of a thief... Someone else had something stolen before the ship burned, if you remember. Now it appears that after stealing the first knife, the thief choose to steal the thing that produced it.

Maybe LightFang has a better explanation for this, but his association with our former captain also taints him.

Unfortunately I don't think I'm going to make it home in time to post again prior to the update and since I'm still uncertain how to continue, I'll give my support to Niklas.

I still wonder at the possibility that only Captain Pinman is the bad guy. If that is the case, I'm uncertain how to proceed. Under that same logic, I don't think Lightfang is either, assuming I'm correct.

The Infernals are still coming, if you haven't noticed. This hasn't saved us one bit. Until this mysterious orb thing is destroyed, I'm afraid that they will arrive regardless.

Oh, Kol.7. My dear captain's son. I've already delineated the truth. What more do you want from me?

All your argument for me was that you wanted me to tell you the truth. That I did, in a painful speech.

And note that not once did I ever say that I had a shady past. I had a hard past living in poverty. Poverty does not equate with a lack of morals, you ivory towerists.

Look. Any suspicion that you have of me would automatically go with the captain's son. Yet you do not accuse him. If anything, the captain's son would be closer to the captain than me. We are not of blood. You know what they say: blood is thicker than water. Like father, like son, yes? But just as I don't think Pinman's evils automatically pass onto his son, I don't think his evils should automatically make me guilty by association.

I find both of you rather hilarious. You believe it is no different being on this island rather then landing on the Lands of the Infernals? Are you foolish! Plus, we did not know the infernals were headed this way until whatever Captain Pinman is said so. Do you not feel we stand a better chance on an island then the Lands of the Infernals themselves? I would also like to see the evidence that Niklas caused this.

Pinman
May 26, 2008, 07:26 PM
Evening 5

Captain Pinman was a patient man. He was prepared to wait for years to achieve his goals, and could overcome obstacles with ease. It was that ability which had developed a master plan to save himself in the instants before his apparent death. So far his plan seemed to be working, but there were always hiccoughs, and an ego was the mortal enemy of any strategist.

So Pinman viewed the recent developments with an unparalled calm. As he felt power flooding into him, his rational mind analyzed the development without panic. He knew what the source had to be, but while the horrific thought that a bond could work in reverse might have paralyzed most men, Pinman tried not to let it faze him.

After all, he saw several ways to turn what he was feeling into an advantage.

Meanwhile on the island, in a tied vote broken by the Captain, it appeared that Lightfang had been sentenced to death. The faithful servant to the Riverkings had been disowned by his new master Kol.7, who had led the accusations against him. It was decided that with the ample supply of wood in the nearby forest, the best method of execution was a public hanging. The necessary equipment was quickly constructed throughout the day, and was ready for the scheduled time of death.

Lightfang stepped forward before the assembled survivors and surveyed them.

“ Friends, Countrymen and Lovers.,

I am an innocent man and you all wrong me. I have never willingly shed the blood of another living being, nor do I ever plan on it.

Your willingness to kill innocents will doom you all. That is all I have to say. “

With his piece said, Lightfang Riverking stepped slowly towards the gibbet, and for all intensive purposes prepared to die. Everybody expected that they were going to kill another innocent after the speech and it was with some reluctance that they prepared to finish their duty.

That’s when they saw the flash. Red streaked out of the corenr of their visions as a terrible laughter pierced the air.

“I’m alive!” he screamed.

“I’M ALIVE!”

The voice was very familiar, and almost all recognized it before they turned around. The voice belonged to Captain Pinman.

The man was now striding purposely towards them, with an evil grin on his face.

“It seems that I didn’t need your help after all, my friends. Perhaps I can finish my plan, right here, right now. “

“No” said a soft yet confident voice. “I won’t let you”.

The crowd turned around as Niklas Wavewalker walked calmly towards Captain Pinman. He was a man on a mission, and his eyes seemed to glow. As he reached the Captain, he threw his cloak on the ground and waited.

“Its been a long time hasn’t it my servant? I think its about time that I renewed the bonds between us.” Said the newly revived Captain with a smile. “ I will enjoy controlling you once more”.

“I AM NOT YOUR SERVANT!” shouted the first mate. He drew back his hand, and with immense concentration shot a bolt of energy at Pinman.

The captain was thrown back several feet and recovered just in time to deflect the second blast, which would probably have taken off his head.

Anger flashed in the captain’s eyes as he stood up. “ You are truly a fool if you think that you can match me. You are a nothing, a nobody.

Feel the power of the Ashen Veil.”

The captain’s hands lit up as fire shot out towards Niklas. The man tried to stop it, but he was unable to. The fire burnt a hole right through his chest.

“Well now that that’s over and done with, who is next to die?” None of the shocked survivors could answer him, their mouths seemed to have sealed themselves shut. “I guess I get to choose then, how about-“

It was just as the captain turned away towards the others that the first mate staggered up. Using his last reserves of power he sent the captain back to the place he knew that he must have come from with a great flash of light. He then died, his blood spilling out onto the sands.

The First Mate, Niklas, was innocent.

Silence ruled the island at that moment. None of the survivors could comprehend what had just happened and some of them never would.

“Well I guess we should go to bed” started the shocked captain, “wait I think Niklas has something here”

Indeed there was something. In his hand, the captain held a small ruby like crystal. With another cursory search, he discovered a silver amulet, that had been voted to him just days before.

The mystery of these items would have to wait for morning though, as night refused to wait on the survivors. It seemed though that the orb shouldn’t be left unguarded and Kol pocketed it for the night.

As the survivors headed off to bed accompanied by the Song of the Nightingale something occurred to them. That music stirred a memory, a shocking one. The night had been silent after the ethereal battle between Pinman and Niklas for a surprising reason. The song of the Nightingale had stopped dead.

Morning 6

Poison is quite a deadly tool. It kills quietly and efficiently, and cannot be traced back to the murderer in most cases. Somehow however, the poisoner always seems to be found, and when they are, justice is swift. Perhaps those that delivered justice in this case were not the greatest example of virtue, but one woman had died for her crimes.

The evidence was quite large. After her body had been found lying in the water, ripped to pieces, the Nightingalers followed the prudent ritual of searching her tent. The oddity inside was discovered fairly quickly, as it seemed unlikely that the distured area of the ground inside could have been moved by anybody else besides the tent's former occupier.

So they dug it up, and found the smoking gun. Buried a few centimeters underneath the ground, lay a small vial of blue liquid and what appeared to be some sort of chemistry set. Rather than take any risks with the later, it was decided to toss it into the ocean, where it was presumably lost at sea. Some still thought however, that the vial could be harmless, and it was kept. Still, the shocks continued to come.

In a slightly surprising turn of events, despite the evidence of guilt on her person, the following showed to be true:

The cook, Chandrasekhar Wavewalker, was innocent.

Thus it was agreed that The Vial would be voted on along with the silver amulet and the orb which Kol.7 surrendered at dawn.

The day will last 48 hours with the midday post coming in 24.

Votes for the red crystal should be in red.
Votes for the Silver Amulet should be in Silver.
Votes for the Vial should be in purple.

Oh, and Kol. 7 can have the amulet. Let noone have the vial. Break it somewhere. I do not want anyone else to be poisoned. The crystal... I don't know.

I did not lie to you. I passed on information I had received. Two sources, one now deceased (D'Artagnan59) and one living told me that he had been scanned as evil. I had no reason to doubt them. I was also told by [another unnamed source] that Niklas possessed a 'strange orb,' and I believed it, and still do believe it to be the evil item Pinman has mentioned. If I am guilty for believing what was told to me, then so are you. Hardly fair.

In addition, read last night's post more closely. While he was not marked as 'evil,' it's clear Niklas had some shady dealings with our good former captain/Ashen Veil cultist. Pinman called Niklas his 'servant' and spoke of 'renewing bonds.' While it is true that Niklas was certainly noble and good in his death, he had a shady past with the evil Captain.

As you and D'Artagnan show, mythmonster, believing in passed-on information from one I trusted doesn't make me guilty

Moving on.

Midday 6

Food had become slightly problematic by the sixth day. There had been a full galley with provisions on the ship, but that had been burned on day 4. There were a few fruit trees on the island, but the lack of variety was quite tiring for the Nightingalers. They wanted something new!

Thus the idea to fashion out some makeshift fishing rods was met by a great deal of approval. Using wood from the nearby forest, and several strong plants nearby, the imperfect tools were crafted. They were then brought to the shoreline, and the lanun began to fish while the others watched.

Everybody knew that it was a longshot. It was unlikely that a large supply of fish existed so near to the island. Then they came in droves.

“Hey look over there!” screamed somebody. “There are fortunes of them.”

Indeed there were. Schools of fish were floating slowly towards the island. There was an oddity about them though, something terribly wrong. It became apparent very quickly exactly what was off about the fish: they were dead.

The Nightingalers watched awestruck as the dead fish approached the island, floating lifelessly in the water. As they got nearer, one brave soul picked one up to discover something curious. The fish had died from lack of oxygen.

With this discovery, the survivors decided that vegetarianism was the prudent course for the rest of their time on the island. Besides, that Song of the Nightingale had begun to give everybody a queasy stomach. Not eating at all seemed like a good idea.

I'm afraid I have to protest.

I believe this red crystal to be evil, of sorts. Why? I think it's causing this mysterious Song of the Nightingale. If you'll notice, when there was no owner of the orb, the song had stopped. This was right after Niklas dueled our beloved captain. And now, when we're deciding on a new master for the orb, the song has started again. It is an ill omen, this song. I think we should destroy the orb. Let us not give it to anyone but instead toss this orb into the ocean!

{OOC: That's a anti-vote against Catharsis.}

Regarding the silver amulet: I care not if Kol.7 has it. Take it. Perhaps it will be stolen by the same thief who has taken my dagger and the forge and who knows what else.

The vial, too. I do not see why we cannot just toss that into the ocean. Death by poison is a cowardly thing.

Lastly, I fear to accuse anyone of evil at the moment. If only evidence would shine on me.

I had talked to him privately before the events of last night, and he sincerely believed that he was saving us all by killing Niklas. Evening 6

At the end of the day, it was another day over, which is all that can be said of the life of a Nightingaler. The vote, with a significant amount of absent members, was led by Tasslehoff- whose turn it was to die.

After the failure of hanging as a method of execution yesterday, the survivors decided that a new method was necessary. One innovative chap suggested that the victims simply be beheaded using scrap metal discovered in the forest. The axe fashioned from it was left aside for executions, and would not be voted to anybody.

The expressionless Tasslehoff walked up towards his executioner, decided to be Lightfang, slowly and deliberately as if savoring every moment remaining of her life. When she took up her position, the captain asked her if he had any last words, a reasonable question given the circumstances.
“I do in fact have a few words for you all.” Said Tasslehoff as her face transformed into a sneer. “Quite simple really, nothing too complex.”

“THE ASHEN VEIL WILL KILL You ALL!”

With that, a snarling Tasslehoff resumed her true form, that of a werewolf, and threw herself at Lightfang. The Riverking leapt out of the way just in time, but his movement gave Tasslehoff an opening and she fled on four legs towards the forest.

The others ran in pursuit, but were unable to overtake the four legged Tasslehoff. She disappeared into the forest, leaving behind a bunch of huffing and puffing survivors.

Still he could not hide forever. It was a small island after all, and search parties scouring the woods were able to slowly track him down and encircle the wolf. Soon the Nightingalers came upon the defeated Tasslehoff from all sides, closing him in completely.

Conversationally Tasslehoff remarked: “You are all going to die you know. There is no way to stop the power of the Ashen Veil. Absolutely none.

Have you figured out what exactly Pinman is doing yet? Didn’t think so.
No I fear that I will be avenged very very soon. “

With that terrible promise the man-wolf threw himself on the execution axe, his last breath escaping his mouth.

The Crafter, Tasslehoff, was a wolf.

Upon the moment of the wolf’s death something mysterious happened to the survivor’s erstwhile companion. Somehow the Song of the Nightingale had grown softer, as if it had lost strength.

Strength that it could never regain.

Night 6

“So where are we going again?” asked Rheinmetall Ironsmith as he followed the cloaked figure slowly.

The Dwarf and Tyrs Oceandweller had agreed to help out their cloaked leader in an experiment. They had been told that they could help advance the powers of healing far beyond their current limits. That they could help breach the limit imposed for so long.

“ To my tent- which is here”, said the leader as he opened a door at the far end of theshore. It led to a small chamber, with strange runes that had been inscribed by its current owner on theground. Upon close examination, there was a small book opened on a nearby table, and two chairs had been set up on the far wall. All of these furnishings appeared to have been recently carved probably using the wood in the forest to the north.

“ Please take a seat, all I need is your strength, nothing else”.

Slightly uneasy, the two seated themselves on the chairs, as the figure began to chant.

The language that pierced the air seemed strange, and as they listened to it the two seemed to grow tired and weaker. They had not noticed the small runes that surrounded each of their chairs.

“Hey, don’t you think this is a little weird” whispered the Dwarf to Tyrs. “Maybe this guy is one of the priests of the AV or something”.

“I’m sorry Rheinmetall, but it was the only way for the rest to survive.”, replied his counterpart.

“What do you mean? Whats happening? Hey what are you-“

Her voice cut off as the two bodies hit the floor.

Morning 7

The survivors awoke to the smell of blood. Outside their tents, in the center of their fledgling camp, lay the body of the latest victim. Mythmonster, to the shock of his mother Stuck in Pi, had been ripped to pieces by the wolves. The remains of his body were scattered around the camp. Bleed seeping out from the gory remains of the Hippus. The only solace to his weeping mother was that nothing had landed in the water. All of the pieces were there, nothing had floated away.

It appeared that The Rider, mythmonster, was innocent.

Although innocent, it seemed that the poor Hippus had hidden some secrets. Among his belongings lay the statue of a Hippus Rider- probably given to the trainee shaman by his father. Maybe it would be of use to somebody else, as determined by an item vote to be held later that morning.

The true surprise lay elsewhere that morning, not at the camp. It was Methos who found them, lying further down the beach. Their bodies had been dumped far from where they had died, as evidenced by the dragging marks in the dirt and they died without blood, with no mark on either of them.

Still, Rheinmetall The Merchant and Tyrs The Wave Watcher were both dead and innocent.

The mystery of their deaths was profound, as both were quite intact with no signs of struggle. A few people suggested poison, and that would have been the general theory had Chandrasekhar not been killed, with her vial still lying unopened in Rheinmetall’s pocket with the gold that had been voted to him days before.

There seemed to be no cause, and the strangest clue was that both bodies appeared drained, if such a phenomenon can be described.

So the thoughtful Nightingalers headed back to their camp, debating the possible causes in their mind. The jolt to reality came only later, as they saw a naked man staring out to sea on their beach.

He seemed not to notice their coming and did not turn as they all gathered around him, fingering weapons and wondering who he could be. None of them were missing, and he did not have Captain Pinman’s figure.

Finally he turned around, and time seemed to freeze in its place.

“Hello Everybody” said Niklas Wavewalker.

Revival. This is Izipo at work here. You have heard of the law of equivalent exchange, yes? I had suspected it all along. You can't just bring back bodies. You have to pay a price equal or greater. In this case, two innocents have died to bring back one. That puts us at negative one. Clearly this endeavor wasn't worth the cost.

Not that I'm not glad to see you back, Niklas. It's just that, well, two innocents have died for you, which doesn't help our cause at all.

How dare you accuse Izipo! Do you not realise how he has put his life at risk to help the innocent team? If a werewolf had found out he'd be dead! And now you accuse him like this? How is this necromancy? Niklas is not undead, he is alive again. I knew about Izipo's power and suspected that Niklas would be useful to the innocent team, so I contacted Izipo and other people to ask for their help. Out of all the people that agreed I chose Tyrs, becaue he has been so quiet lately, and you can never trst the quiet ones, and Rheinmetall who was one of my main suspects. We were hoping to catch a wolf in the process but alas they were both innocent.

My Love, I thought I had lost you...
But I lost no time mourning, I finally knew then what my destiny was. All these years I had been studying, just for you. How simple it looks now, how hard the choice was. I was torn, thought I couldn't do it, but found strength and resolve in the friends we have made.
Sure, one might argue that two souls to save one, is too heavy a price to pay.

Abruptly she turns to the crowd, with a look of defiance.

But know this : my husband's soul is worth more than all of ours.
If this was the price to pay to rid us of evil and get me back my love, then yes I am guilty of being willing to pay it.

Taking out the book from her robe again, she looks at it for moment then throws it in front of her on the sand. It is noticeably charred in some parts and most of the pages turning with the gentle breeze are either unreadable, or simply blank.

There, I have no need of this anymore, now that my destiny is fulfilled. Finally I am at peace.

Turning back to face her husband, she whispers :

I am yours forever my love, even death was not able to tear us apart.

Evening 7

Another day had passed for the survivors beneath the red sky. The Song of the Nightingale carried on its tune, and inflicted a chilly feeling upon each and every one of the innocents. They felt in their bones that the Infernals were really coming. If they failed to destroy the orb by Morning 10, they would all die.

The more immediate concern was of course the execution voting. Following the tradition set the previous day of beheading, Lightfang readied the trusty execution axe, and merciary OceanDweller walked up to stand beside his executioner. It was he who had been decided to die that evening.

“Any last words?” asked the captain, in an attempt at a cool professional demeanour. To put it bluntly, the fellow just didn’t have the talent.

Merciary looked at the man for a second with what appeared to be anger on his face. Finally he seemed to nod to himself as if making a decision. Then the man resumed his true form.

The Patriarch of the Oceandwellers grew fur, and a short tail drew out from behind him. Having seen such a sight just the day before, the Nightingalers were not paralysed by fear and most began to back away slowly.

The werewolf however, seemed to have other ideas on his mind. Merciary addressed Captain Kol in a maniacal voice.

“You have no idea what was done to me. What was done on your behalf.
It is your fault that I’m like this Captain!
How dare you still live after all that was done. I will correct the mistake! “

With that, the werewolf threw himself at Kol, scratching at the man’s body with his claws. The captain started to run, but tripped on a rock as the werewolf pursued him.

Thankfully for the captain Lightfang still valued his life, and as the werewolf reared to deal a mortal blow, the servant drew back the axe and cut off merciary’s head.

Merciary, The Navigator, was a wolf.

With two wolves dead, the survivors trekked off to bed with some degree of hope. Still none could escape the troubling thought: They only had two executions left.

Morning 8

*BANG! BANG! BANG!*

The survivors awoke to the terrifying feeling of the earth shaking beneath them. This frenzied movement of the ground was accompanied by a horrible rumbling sound that struck fear into the hearts of them all. Somehow even the Song of the Nightingale seemed to pulse in beat with the ground.

As each of the trembling Nightingalers plucked up the courage to venture outside, the cause of it all became apparent. There was a ferocious pillar of fire and smoke rising from one unlikely woman’s tent. Evidently there had been an explosion of some kind.

Unfortunately for her, the sheer monstrosity of the fire left no hope that she still lived. Somehow, she had been burned alive within her own tent.

The Cannoneer, Catharsis, was dead and innocent.

Still, there was some hope of recovering some of her possessions, and as the fire and earthquake seemed to settle down, Tolis ventured into Catharsis’ tent to recover “important things”.

When the woman came limping out, he carried the Nightingale Orb in his hands, with a few burns for his efforts. “Lets vote on this shall we?” said Tolis, before promptly fainting from smoke inhalation. Incidentally, the vial had been awarded to Catharsis yesterday by the Captain, so it also had to be voted on.

Of course, there was a small problem with this idea. As soon as Tolis fainted, the orb began...screaming. A terrible shrieking arose from its depths to equal the song of the Nightingale in magnitude. Most survivors covered their ears and ran away shamelessly.

So the Nightingalers had a long day and an even longer night ahead of them. Who could say what consequences had arisen from these events?

The midday post will come at the usual time, followed by a final post 24 hours from then.
Accusations should be in Black.
Supports should be in Green.
Votes for the Nightingale should be in red.
Votes for the Vial should be in purple.

''There are so few of us remaining, yet presumably there are still wolves amongst us and now we're stuck on some godsdamned island. Bloody fantastic that is. I would like to hold onto the vial for now, there are rumours that no one but Chandraeskhar has the knowledge to use the poison yet I don't want to take any more risk here then necessary.

I have heard many dark tales of this orb of late, and I happen to know that if you speak the name of a werewolf into it it kills the speaker. The orb killed catharsis, and I happen to know which name catharsis spoke into it tonight. Lightfangs! My so-called bodyguard and ''trusted friend''. Hah! I have suspected you from the start of this crisis yet you have always managed to escape 'the vote', so to speak. Not this time, mate. There's too much evidence against you now.

Oh, the bonds of trust between us, Kol.7. I do not wish for you to die. Please. I have absolutely no animosity between us.

Oh, and this of course leads to my next question: Catharsis has been whispering names into the orb? Then, by extension...Niklas, the original orb owner, also has been whispering names. And Niklas has caused all these innocent deaths.

Something to think about.

"It appears another bandwagon has started. I know not whether Lightfang is innocent or not, thus I shall remove myself from that bandwagon."

"These items, I say to cast them both to the sea. They both have brought foul luck to their owners."

She returns to her tent, praying that whatever persues them will be stopped before the tenth night.

Evening 8

The bloody sun began to set in the sky ending a day that began with fire and death. True, the red orb’s terrible shrieks had subsided by Midday, but most still feared to go near it. Of course, the duty to take it fell to somebody, that person being Methos.

Lightfang Riverking had spent the last few hours of his life sitting far from the others, wallowing about his life. Most of it had been hard, until the captain had saved him from the streets. Until the captain told him his secrets. Until…

Nobody wanted to interrupt this torrent of resignation, so it fell to the captain to bring his servant and last remaining family member to be executed. Grumbling about doing all the dirty work, Kol brought an unresisting Lightfang before the crowds, and took the execution axe from him.

Lightfang prepared himself to die, but Kol started having difficulties. The captain couldn’t lift the execution axe! After watching with cruel amusement for a few minutes, Lightfang decided to spare him further agony. “Give me that Kol, I’ll do it myself.”

Heaving the bloody axe in his powerful hands, he calmly sliced off one of his own arms. Blood gushed from his body, and it appeared to all that he would soon die from blood loss.

“Don’t worry everybody, I’ll die in a few seconds but I never got to give my last words. I have them for one of you only”

The bodyguard suddenly turned and grasped Captain Kol by his arm with a quivering grip.

“I would have protected you! It was my job, he gave it to me! He knew about-”

*The bodyguard coughed a bit of blood*

“Now you will die with the rest of them….”

Totally spent, the bodyguard swayed on his spot before falling over. After a few final breaths, his last gasp escaped from his body. With that done, he resumed his true form:

The Bodyguard, Lightfang, was a wolf.

As darkness overtook everybody, a voice seemed to whisper out from the Song of the Nightingale.

“You all are going to die….”

Morning 9

There was an ominous note in the air when the survivors arose that morning. As if something was not right, that something was wrong.

They found her in her tent, her body ripped to shreds like most of the other victims. It was the scene that was different. She had cooked some fish and left them out on the table, and there was a shattered vase nicked from the Nightingale on the flower. Its former occupants, freshly picked roses, were all broken in total disorder on the floor.

Evidently she had been expecting somebody. The question was: Did that person bring her an additional surprise? Or was it somebody or something or a group of things that she wasn’t expecting?

The only thing that was apparent brought no solace to the others.

Tolis Ironsmith, The Maiden, was innocent.

Sounds of weeping arose from somebody in the crowd. With everybody used to the sobbing of family members, they never noticed the oddity.

Still, it appeared that Tolis had no possessions, so there was nothing to vote on. Only the execution stood ahead of the Nightingalers that day. It was a day that some predicted would be their last.

Nobody noticed that the Song of the Nightingale had changed somewhat. It had weakened every time that a wolf died, but that morning it was different. Perhaps a few notes shifted perhaps something else.

It seems doubtful that anybody would have cared either.

Helloo ?
Anyone home ?
I know there's not many of us still alive (8 if I counted right), but the silence here is unnerving.

What now ? Is there still evil lurking among us ? I was pretty sure we had got the final wolf... The worst thing is that I'm convinced of the innocence of all of us, which means I'm scared now, very scared...

Niklas
Jun 09, 2008, 03:21 AM
This is very hard for me, which should explain my silence. I have been dead and returned, only to find my beloved daughter killed. And now... I find... I find I have no son either. The son I knew is no longer here, and he died a long time ago, only to be replaced by a monster. I have been presented with evidence of his guilt, there can be no mistake. qoou, though it tears my heart, you will die for killing the son I once knew.

{ OOC: Gee, what a family you put me in Pinman - a necromancer, a poisoner and a wolf! :p }

Few people are left on the beach anymore. The young man doesn't like to admit it, even to himself, but part of him prefers it that way. He's never been much of a fan of other people, preferring solitary communion with his God. There's plenty of solitude now.

But the rest of him knows nothing but grief, and fear. He spends much of his time scanning the horizon for the signs of the arrival of horrors even worse than what they've been facing so far. He wonders if it might not have been better if he'd just been killed back on the Nightingale, maybe better for all of them, if they'd just drowned peacefully in the storm.

Quuo, it does seem likely that you are a wolf. But as Niklas so correctly suggests, it may not have been by your own choice that you became so infected. If any part of you remains human, please understand that the death we are offering you is a mercy. The rest of us might wish we had taken your place, before too long.

Having spoken, Renata sits down on the sand and resumes staring at the sea.

The day’s execution vote came to a close without much suspense, It was apparent fairly early on that qoou wavewalker was going to die. He went up in front of the people protesting his innocence, but his appeals fell on deaf ears. The captain drew back the execution ace, and with one stroke chopped off his head.

The Supplymaster, qoou, was innocent.

It was over, the innocents last card was in play. They had failed to kill all of their enemies before the time limit, and baring a miracle, it appeared that they would all die the following morning.

Night 9

The darkness of the black sky covered the island, and seemed to consume everything on it. Perhaps it resembled the bleak prospects of those who remained; perhaps it was reflective of those who died. None knew, and with the fate of the Nightingale and all men to be determined this night, none cared. Electricity seemed to ring through the air on the beach. What had begun on that fateful day nine mornings ago would be finished, for better or for ill tonight.

Alone in his cabin, Kol.7 Riverking paced around nervously. Finally, when all was dark and he was positive that none could see him should he venture outside, he drew out one item from under his makeshift bed. After some hesitation, he took out a second.

Methos Oceandweller stood vigil over the orb he had been assigned to guard days ago. With a slight sight he pronounced:

“Frozen in Ice”

The orb whose name “Nightingale” was engraved on its side did not respond, but Methos seemed to have expected nothing. With a sigh, he turned towards his tent’s opening to see Kol.7 standing there.

“Did you bring it?” asked the cartographer.

“Its right here” replied the heir who proceeded to withdraw a small silver knife from under his belt.

After a pause and with resignation in his voice Methos responded:

“Lets do it Kol”.

Taking the knife from the captain, Methos held it in his quivering hand for a moment, before aligning it with the orb and stabbing into its depths.

The world turned white from the blinding power of the light.

Meanwhile…..

Renata Plainsdweller walked slowly through the cool night air.The blackness was liberating to him, for here he was the master.

Acting on a whim, he transformed into his true form, sprouting a tail and fur along his petit torso. He felt power radiate from within as he resumed the body of a werewolf.

Walking towards the tent of his chosen victim, he pondered how all this had come to be. How one day Captain Pinman had called him into his cabin and using the powers of the Ashen Veil transformed him into a werewolf.

It was amazing to him how with just a little time he had grown to accept and enjoy the brutality of murder. How quick it was to change what somebody was capable of.

These thoughts were cut short by her arrival at the tent of his chosen target. With a small breath of anticipation, The Pious One entered the man’s tent.

Niklas Wavewalker was sitting on the floor gazing into space. Hearing something emerge from the night, he turned and calmly regarded the werewolf in his midst.

“Hello Renata, I thought that I might be seeing you tonight” remarked The First Mate.

“You knew?” rasped the werewolf in his snarling voice.

“Your framing of qoou was magnificent, and had we been just one night late, you would have won. Tonight I fear that you are in the wrong place, my fellow prisoner of Captain Pinman”

Renata growled a sound that would have struck fear into the heart of most men.

“You know nothing Niklas, you rejected the power that evil offered you, and now you will pay the price”

Without further ado, the werewolf dashed across the room, and ripped open the First Mate’s throat.

“Let that be known as the price of honor”, sneered Renata, and he turned to leave the tent. That’s when the explosion rocked the air.

Meanwhile…..

Under the cover of the shadowy moon, another roamed the island freely. The Engineer, Frozen in Ice Hammerfist, had decided that tonight she would finally make her move. It was time to leave this desolate rock forevermore.

She waited at the rendezvous point for a good twenty minutes but nobody showed up. Two invitations had been issued, but neither got a response. Shrugging, the last dwarf pushed her raft into the cool ocean water and cast off. Neither Kol.7 nor Niklas would be accompanying her that night.

It was a few minutes out to sea that she saw the explosion, and thanked all of the gods she had never thought to believe in that she wasn’t on the island.

Meanwhile…..

As was her custom, Stuck in Pi Silverrider used the beautiful solace of the night to gaze up into the stars. They were her rocks, with their brilliant and ever- changing nature. Looking up into the skies that night had brought her an answer as it always did. Kol.7 Riverking was not one of the religious zealots that she so despised.

With her work done, she turned to go to bed when she heard the explosion.

Meanwhile…..

Only Izipo Wavewalker was asleep that night, and even the sleepy healer was awoken by the ferocious bang that pierced the night.

Meanwhile…..

Methos and Kol felt power course through their bodies as a white vibrant light erupted from the orb.

“Kol, we’ve got to get out of here! This thing is going to explode!”

The two ran with all of their might out of the tent, they just dived out of the way from the whole apparatus exploded. Brilliant streaks of fire sailed into the night sky breaking into the blackness of the night sky.

Although somewhat disoriented by the blast, Kol noticed something immediately. The Song of the Nightingale had stopped. After everything that had happened, the orb had been destroyed.

Methos, although slightly singed from the fire, steadied himself up and pulled his friend off the ground.

“We did it eh Captain? The Infernals aren’t going to come, we are saved. That blasted orb was bringing them, and now that its gone, the danger is over. Why look! Even the sky has lost its reddish tinge.”

Kol nodded, and turned to gaze up towards the sky when he heard another blast and watched his friend get thrown to the ground unconscious. When he flipped around, he saw Pinman raise his hand towards Methos.

“No father! Don’t kill him!”, screamed Kol as he jumped in front of the cartographer.

“He is not your friend, and killing him will tie up another loose end. Don’t you realize that all my sacrifices could bare fruit? We could salvage-“

“Father, what have you done? Aren’t you a human being? Don’t you have a soul? You aren’t even an animal! Even they are not merciless butchers while you are responsible for the deaths of 20 men!”

The fire in Pinman’s eyes subsides somewhat as he gazes at his son whose rage is evident on his face.

“Don’t you understand that I did it for you? For your future? The Nightingale was broke, we had no money- nothing! We would have lost the ship, lost everything!

I created those werewolves in an attempt to give us a new start. We would kill all the crew and passengers, take their possessions, and we would have something again. You me and your…mother.”

“but then Niklas intervened…” whispered Kol softly.

“Yah that fool had to go where he didn’t belong and ruin everything! I tried to control him, but ultimately he was a tough bugger and he overpowered me. I remember clearly my ‘last words’- “How? You are bound!”-. Still, he could not know about the Nightingale, a... relic that I possessed. I used it to control the wolves that I had created and linked them to it. With a little bit of effort, I was able to seal myself up within it to await its destruction.”

Pinman glanced at the silver knife.

“Yes, it does have a strange affinity for silver doesn’t it? Now can we stop all this foolishness? We have to kill the others and finish off my plan. “

“You still don’t see it!?! It doesn’t excuse it that you did it for the family! There is something greater than that!” screamed Kol in frustration.

Pinman grew deathly pale and began to shake with rage or shock or even perhaps fear.

“Then die Kol! I forsake you!”

With that, the former captain withdrew a knife from his belt and stabbed Kol in the chest.

“You are no son of mine!”

Having burned the final bridge in his family, Pinman grabbed Kol’s gold before walking away from him. He did not glance back towards his son, who lay bleeding onto the sand.

Meanwhile…..

Renata hurried quickly back into his tent. Huffing and puffing, he slipped back into human form and prepared himself to meet the others heading towards the explosion. He was just readying himself to leave when he heard the voice.

“Hello Renata.” Said Captain Pinman.

“Master”, said Renata in a whisper, “You are back!”

“Yes I am, now lets finish what we started those many nights ago. They are confused, lets kill them together. “

“”Of course” hastened Renata. “Although suddenly I feel weak, I think something is-“

Suddenly Renata collapsed onto the floor, and began twitching as blood erupted from her mouth and nose. Pinman rushed to her side, but he was too late. The last wolf was dead.

“DAMMIT!” howled Pinman in fury. He kicked Renata’s body out of the way and proceeded to search his tent for the statue he needed. Someday, he would be back.

When Stuck in Pi later came to check on her fellow Hippus woman, she found the poisoned Renata dead but there was no sign of Captain Pinman.

Meanwhile…..

Izipo Wavewalker ran quickly towards the scene of the explosion. Funnily enough, she uncovered within her evil self a desire to help the wounded. She ran towards Methos who was slowly pulling himself off the ground in confusion.

“Don’t worry about me! Get Kol- he is in danger!” insisted Methos. “Go!”

Izipo ran further down the beach towards the flaming tent and spotted Kol lying bleeding in the sand. Quickly withdrawing some medical supplies she began to treat him as best as she could.

“You are going to be alright now Kol! Stay with me!”

“My Father…” muttered the captain.

“What Kol? What about your father?” replied the healer distractedly. “I need some help over here!”

“My father….. we have to….

….kill him”.

@ Methos: I knew (or at least I think I knew) that Kol.7's strength was too high for me to tackle, so my only hope was for him to give the knife to someone else. It was basically a coin flip as to whether to target you (due to having the orb) or Niklas (as the character/player most likely to be trusted all around). I guessed wrong. :) But I wasn't really expecting Kol to give up the knife at all; that surprised me.

Congrats to the innocent team, and a big-sarcastic-thank-you to Niklas, for having the brilliant idea of killing me the first night. Thanks. :p Although I admit it was rather fun fun to watch the lot of you stumble around trying to figure everything out.

I KNEW Renata was the last wolf when he (or are you a she?) and Tasslehoff sent those PMs to me claiming Niklas was a wolf! Oh well, innocents win! Yay! However, what did my statue do and why did Pinman look for it after Renata died?

EDIT: Actually, what was Niklas? Wolf turned innocent?

Excellent game and a very close one. Luckily we had that poison to finish off Renata. Too bad about Niklas though. Great write-up too!

Hah! In the end, I saved you all! ;)

I'm afraid that I was somewhat lost by the time my death was approaching (though not as lost as I had led my contacts to believe), but I was almost ready to poison Tasslehoff, fulfilling my objective and bringing the innocents (of whom I considered myself a member, being Neutral after all) much closer to victory. Still, I'm satisfied with how it turned out.

Just innocent-innocent, I think. Though there may be more backstory.

Ironic thing about me and Tasslehoff -- we really did believe that Niklas was evil, due to being told that the orb controlled us. I didn't go after him because he had the orb (the wolves could actually have destroyed it at any time); it was more to establish my bona fides. If we had been right, Tasslehoff would have looked innocent, not guilty. But I certainly won't trust Pinman to be that straightforward again!

Edit: it looks like Pinman lied to me about the statue -- he told me it was useless, but then he went and stole it!

I want to hear the story of what happened with Backwards Logic! Tolis started to tell it to me in an IM, but then I said something to annoy him, and he wouldn't tell me the rest.

Chand, you're lucky. My objective was to kill the poisoner-YOU!

EDIT: Now I realized why the wolves killed me. They knew I would figure out Renata was also a wolf, because he (she?) sent a PM to me showing Niklas's (false) guiltiness.

Renata
Jun 11, 2008, 08:14 PM
Actually, the wolves didn't kill you mythmonster2. The good guys did. Wait until you see the starting PMs with the orb backstory; it's brilliant.

Edit: I should say, the wolves didn't *choose you to be killed*. We did provide the claws, of course. :p

See, Renata, you should have killed Niklas the night I died. You could have stopped the formation of the silver dagger thing. :p

Well, yeah, even though I was the leader of the werewolves, I'm not going to give a play-by-play account. I can't remember what happened and I didn't take notes down as I went. Although if you ask about something, I'll probably be able to formulate a coherent response.

Off the top of my head:

@Methos: My ability to detect what happened at night was due to being forced to run around and kill people.

@Niklas: I hate playing in any team against you. :p

Name: Backwards Logic Riverking
Position in Family: Wife
Job Title: The Widow
Victory Condition: Innocent Victory
Affiliation: Good

You were the Captain’s loving wife for many years, and even had a son with him. Now the love of your life has been murdered and you are on a brutal quest for vengeance. Even though the man may have had his faults, he never deserved to die.

The two of you met years ago in a tavern, where too much drink led to marriage, although in fact you were opposites in many ways. His greatest love was the sea, while you were the greatest oddity for a Lanun- Sea Sick. He kept to himself, while you always nose in others business. Still, you loved him, even though he had grown distant and even scary over the last few weeks.

Your family now consists of your son, The Heir, and The Guardian- Protector, who your husband assigned to ensure that his family remained safe- obviously he didn’t trust foreigners.

For now, your path is clear: Find your husband’s killer, whether they be Lanun or one of the passengers.

Objective: You must personally kill your husband’s murderer with your own two hands.

Item: A Knife. You found a weapon among your husband’s belongings, although it looks fragile and can probably only be used once. If you wish, on any given night you can use it to kill one person, but again it can only be used once.

Special Ability: Huntress. You are somewhat of an amateur detective, and using proper nosing techniques, you think that you could tell if a person is your husband’s killer. This can be used once per night.

Name: Kol.7 Riverking
Position in Family: Son
Job Title: The Heir
Victory Condition: Innocent Victory
Affiliation: Neutral

The life of a captain’s son is good. You are a man who enjoys his comforts and looks down upon the poorer and obviously inferior sailors. Born to wealth, you have adopted a snobbish lifestyle even though a large potion of the family money has been lost during your father’s time as leader. Seeing as his death clears the way to your captaincy, you aren’t mourning him that much, especially seeing as the man had been different over the past few weeks. He had grown cold and distant- not the man who used to cater to your every whim.

In any event, your primary goal at this point is to secure your claims to the ship. In order to do that, you have to survive what is looking to be a turbulent time in your life. You have to be alive in order to restore the family wealth.

You know that your mother, The Widow, has just been perpetually sulking through this crisis. Still, you bet that you could count on the Guardian- Protector, the bodyguard assigned to you by your father to help out.

Objective: You must survive in order to lay your claims to the ship once you reach land, but you also have to eliminate all competition, so you must either become the Captain, or see the first Captain killed. (He must be lynched where you are a vote against him on the first day)

Special Ability: Thief. You are a very self- centered man, with no moral quandary about taking other people’s possessions. Once a night, you can name a person’s item that you wish to steal, and you will do so using secret passages within the ship shown to you by your father. However, if you want to be successful, you must know exactly what you are looking for.

Item: Deed of Ownership- Nightingale. Your share of the inheritance. After they found your father dead, you went back to his cabin and quietly snuck this out. It wouldn’t do for the crew to try and vote on what is rightfully yours- The Heir to the Throne.

Name: - Riverking (Adopted name)
Position in Family: Former Servant, now Guardian- Protector
Job Title: The Guardian
Victory Condition: Werewolf Victory
Affiliation: Evil

You were the captain’s servant for many years, faithful to him completely, as he had taken you from poverty into his care. One day he simply decided to give you some ‘improvements’ is all. He called you into his cabin, and taking out a spell book of the Ashen Veil, transformed you into a werewolf.

From that day forward, you have longed for human flesh, something the captain promised to deliver. Apparently he had intended to convert others into werewolves, among both the Lanun and the passengers, in order to kill the other passengers and Lanun at sea. He would then recover all of their possessions and start afresh. With a new crew, and new found wealth, the captain could make the Nightingale a great ship again.

The captain’s death has shocked you. Neither you nor - , the other three werewolf you know of had anything to do with it, and you certainly don’t know who did. However, the thing that truly disturbs you is that the captain’s orb has gone missing. That was the orb he used to control you and in somebody else’s hands, you have no control over your actions at night.

Objective: You want to achieve a werewolf victory, while at the same time doing your utmost to fulfill your obligation to the captain by protecting The Heir and The Widow.

Name: Niklas Wavewalker
Position in Family: Husband
Job Title: The First Mate
Victory Condition: Innocent victory
Affiliation: Good

You killed the captain, but although the statement appears to be simple, the truth is very complex. For many years you revered the Captain, serving honorably under him as he had saved you when you were just a little boy from drowning.

Then the captain…changed. He started going off on his own into ports, and bringing back mysterious cargo that he would show nobody. One day you ventured into the captain’s cabin when he wasn’t expecting you and you saw it. He was holding a vile book of the Ashen Veil and conducting evil enchantments. When he saw you, he froze you and bound you to be his servant.

Unfortunately for the captain, he miscalculated your ability to resist his spell. It was his first try, and perhaps less powerful than what was needed. So you escaped his binding, and killed him with rituals to free yourself, where you stand now.

You met your wife on the ship, thanks to the man you just killed, and have had an indifferent relationship with her. She is The Healer, and was always too busy and you just never really loved her. Still you had two children with her, The Supplymaster, your Son, and The Cook, your daughter.

The Captain’s last line was: “How? You are Bound!”

Objective: You recovered a red ruby like crystal from the captain’s cabin before you left. It makes you uneasy to have any evidence left of the deed, so you must find some way to eliminate the connection to the captain. You could start by finding a way to remove the writing “Nightingale” from it, although the writing is not ordinary, so you may need something special to do it. In short, purge the stone of its connection to the captain.

{HINT: You may need Some Tools to do it}

Item: A crystal. Every night, it compels you to speak a name into the crystal, with the implication that if you refuse, you have spoken your own.

Special Ability: Hearts and Minds. You have the ability to look into the heart of a man, and see what he is made of. In short, thanks to your experience with the Captain, you believe that you can tell whether or not somebody is Good, Evil, or Neutral. This can be done once per night.

Name: Izipo Wavewalker
Position in Family: Wife
Job Title: The Healer
Victory Condition: Innocent Victory

You are a healer, the woman who treats the wounds of everybody onboard the Nightingale, although this is not all that you are. Secretly, you are a dabbler in the evil arts of Necromancy, and it is you greatest hope to one day raise a member of the dead.

Still, you go with the times, and as of right now you are innocent in the deaths aboard this ship. The murderers will kill you just as easily as they would kill a true innocent. Perhaps your abilities will ensure that everybody, and thus you as well, remain alive.

You and your husband, The First Mate, have always been cold towards each other. Your reason is that trying to connect with the dead occupies all your spare time, but you don’t know why he doesn’t seem to value your marriage. The only person he ever seemed to revere was the captain, who in fact arranged your marriage. Still, the marriage netted two children, The Supplymaster, your son, and The Cook, your daughter.

Objective: You want to succeed in your experiments and actually raise a member of the dead.

Special Ability: Necromancer. Assuming that you can get two people to participate in an experiment, and they must say: “I agree to participate in Chandrasekhar’s experiment”, you believe that you can transfer the life essence of those two people into a dead man. The two volunteers needn’t know that they will die in the process.

WARNING: A resurrected player will retain their former affiliation, victory condition and objective. You are not powerful enough to control them in this regard. If you are so inclined, you can resurrect a werewolf, but they will still want to take a bite out of you.

Item: Book of Necromancy. Unfortunately, you are not quite yet ready for the resurrection ceremony. It will take two nights of studying this book on necromancy once you learn the name of the person whom you wish to resurrect.

You are the keeper of the ship’s supplies. Somebody want booze? No problem, you’ve got a whole stash, and it sure seems like its going to be needed in the coming days.

However, despite the control you exert over the day to day supplies on the ship, you’ve never really owned anything truly valuable. You see others possessions and you long to have something of your very own. Unfortunately for you, you are a clutz, and it would be dangerous for you to try and steal anything. You already had a near miss when you got attracted to a cannon carried around by PrinceScamp Ocean Dweller. At night, you snuck into his room and removed it, but he heard you and you were nearly caught in the act. As such, you’ve decided to pursue your attraction through purely legal means.

You are the son of The Healer and The First Mate, who don’t seem to have a very happy marriage. Your sister, The Cook, was never really interested in talking to you either so you had a solitary childhood at sea.

Objective: You wish to possess three items to fulfill your dream of owning valuables.

Special Ability: Hidden Treasures. You have grown quite adept at finding out what your neighbors have that you don’t. Once per night, you can examine another person to figure out exactly what items they have in their possession at the time. You don’t think that you will figure out their uses though.

Item: Broken Cannon. You stole the Cannon fromPrinceScamp Oceandweller but due to your carelessness and lack of knowledge about Cannons, you broke it.

You are just a dabbler in wickedness, perhaps some would call you a murderer, but you don’t know anything about the captain’s death and the sabotage- honest! Sure you poisoned those two lovers, but you’ve always hated the idea of romance. Your parents, The First Mate and The Healer raised you in a cold home with no love, and you’ve grown up to be a killer- albeit one with a survival instinct.

You learned about poisons from your mother the healer, who tried to teach you how to cure, but you took that knowledge and decided to kill. You found out that Rowen and Adriana were lovers and decided to test out your talents by poisoning their food. Obviously it worked. The thing was that you thought Rowen had loved you! Then he went out and cheated on you with Adriana, and when you found out, it had seemed obvious what you had to do.

Still, as you know your brother The Supplymaster would say, there is a time to be selfish with booze, but there is also a time to share it. Right now, you are just as vulnerable as anybody else on the ship, and you can use your talents to help the innocents. Somewhere deep in your heart you realize that you did something wrong, and you want to redeem yourself.

Objective: Kill a werewolf with poison, but don’t kill more than one additional innocent.

Special Ability: Poison. At night, you can choose to poison somebody’s food for the next day. However, it will take several days for the person to succumb to the effects of the poison. You are not sure how many. However, before you can poison somebody, you have to produce the nightshade, which takes one night.

Item: Poison Making Kit. This item allows you to produce one shot of poison per night, assuming that you are doing nothing else.

You were a great Navigator, one of the best among all of the Lanun. In fact, most of your family share your skill with geography and climate. The Wave Watcher is your wife, and you are very proud of your son, The Cartographer. The one black sheep in your family is The Canoneer, but you don’t like to talk about your daughter.

Still, your happy life was shattered one day when your captain called you in to do a service for him. This involved him turning you into a werewolf using spells performed as a member of the Ashen Veil.

That was the orb he used to control you and in somebody else’s hands, you have no control over your actions at night. Still, his death gives you the chance to revenge yourself upon the other members of his family, if you can free yourself from his binding.

Objective: You want to achieve a werewolf victory, while at the same time doing your utmost to kill the remaining Riverkings. At the same time, the wolves must collectively strip the orb of its control over them.

You are a woman of the skies despite what you are commonly known as. For reasons nobody can understand, you have the ability to predict and influence the weather, to help ensure that the nightingale cruises along the sea.

Now that the ship is cruising along without control, your abilities are more important than ever. You think that you have a way to stop this madness, seeing as you have control of the weather, you can bring in a wind gust to beach the ship on an island.

Indeed your entire family is involved with steering the ship in the right direction. Your husband is The Navigator, your son The Cartographer. The one black sheep in the family is your daughter- The Canoneer.

Objective: You want to successfully beach the ship in order to stop this inevitable trek towards doom. In order to work your ability you must acquire the Catographer’s map, so that you know where to direct the wind gust.

Special Ability: Beach. Once you have acquired the Cartographer’s map, on any given day you can ask to beach the ship on an island using the power of the wind. This will have untold advantages for the innocents, but will prevent the day’s lynching. For obvious reasons the ability can only be used once.

Her name is Tolis Ironsmith, and she is the love of your life. Between the two of you, you refer to her as The Maiden because of her unrivaled beauty. Still, it is a secret love and a dangerous one, you doubt that either of your fathers would approve.

The Navigator is a stern father to you in contrast to your kind mother, The Wave Watcher. Your sister The Canoneer is just violent and watches over the ship with sheer brutality.

Objective: Protect the Maiden at all costs! She must live.

Special Ability: Love. You love the Maiden above all else, and you know that she is innocent. She knows the same about you.

Item: Map. This is a map of all of waters the Nightingale has traveled through.

Every good ship needs its defender and that’s you. The wielder of cannons, you reckon that you could put up a good fight in the face of any threat.

You are the black sheep in your family as the others all have jobs in boring Navigation and Weather control. Your mother is The Wave Watcher, your father The Navigator, and your brother The Cartographer. Boring! You are an action junkie, not one to sit around studying charts or spending hours watching the skies.

Unfortunately, you are a bit unarmed in these troubled times, as just last night somebody snuck into your room and stole your second cannon! With only one, you doubt that you are strong enough to face off against murderers in the night.

Objective: Recover your lost Cannon, flasher, and repair it in full.

Special Ability: Cannon Specialty. This ability is twofold. Firstly, while each Cannon by itself nets +1 strength when fully operational, in your hand both will net +2 strength if you have them together. Secondly, with a forge and a bit of silver, you reckon that you could forge a fabled “Silver Cannonball”, which is rumored to be powerful enough the blow a whole right through a werewolf’s heart.

Item: Basher the Cannon. The first cannon of the pair. It nets you +1 Strength from the get go.

Objective: You wish to complete the greatest feat ever performed by a Blacksmith- you wish to forge a knife of Silver.

Special Ability: Create Dagger. Using your portable forge and iron supplies, you have the ability to create a new dagger with two nights work. This can be done three times and each dagger adds +1 strength to the holder. If you manage to acquire a bit of silver, you can make one of the daggers into a silver dagger by adding another two nights work to it. There are multiple ways to acquire a piece of silver.

Item: Forge. This allows you to work your special ability. Anybody with 3 strength can work it as well as you can.

You are a tinkerer by trade, an engineer. Taking things apart and building new inventions are your favourite things to do in the world. As such, you have enjoyed staying in this marvel of construction- The Nightingale, but its time to leave. Things have gotten FAR too dangerous for your liking.

Your husband, The Blacksmith, seems oblivious to the danger, and has already begun sharpening his knives for the fight- not you. You are going to get out of here as fast as possible. You had the brilliant idea to build a small boat using several common materials. You are sure that you can find a small unoccupied island far away from these murderers to spend your life in. Still it would be nice to bring a man along with you, your boat can hold two people, although your son The Apprentice is out of the question.

Objective: You must escape from this ship, and bring an innocent man with you.

Special Ability: Boat Builder. You are an Engineer, construction is your specialty. You brought a few materials with you on the ship, and you managed to secretly salvage a bit of the sail from the fallen mast, using your set of tools, you can successfully construct a small boat in 4 nights and escape on the fourth. You may take somebody with you by PMing your choice to me. If you wish, you can give instructions to escape if you are going to be lynched or attacked, but then you will not be able to bring somebody with you due to the necessity of moving quickly.

Besides money, you also have some skills at appraisal, and know a bargain when you see one. Those skills probably come from your mother, The Crafter. She knows how to make good stuff!

Still, being trapped on this foul ship has given you time to pause and reflect, maybe there is more to life than material wealth!?! On second thought- nah.

Objective: For many years it has been your dream to own a Gold Sculpture of a rider. You reckon you cold make one if you nicked some of your father’s gold and somehow found a statue of a rider. You could fuse the two together to make the item. Now where would you find a gold statue of a rider….

You are studying to become a Hippus Shaman, something that gave your father, The Horse Breeder, lots of pride. Even your mother The Weaver was proud of you.

One day the Captain of the Nightingale, Pinman, called you into his cabin and pulling out a book of the Ashen Veil converted you into a werewolf.

Objective: You want to achieve a werewolf victory, while at the same time doing your utmost to gain a human weapon to admire. At the same time, the wolves must collectively strip the orb of its control over them.

Strength: 2

Fellow Werewolves: Lightfang, Merciary, Renata

{ Your Werewolf PM is coming that outlines the collective abilities and objectives of the wolves}

Name: d’artagnanSilver-rider
Position in Family: Husband
Job title: The Shaman
Victory Condition: Innocent Victory
Affiliation: Good

You are a devout shaman of Tali, the god of the Hippus. As such, you believe that it is your duty to bring everybody over to your beliefs- at any cost. Your wife, The Stargazer, is an abomination in your opinion, as there can be no other messages except from Tali.

On the other hand, you are proud of your son, The faithful Rider, who has taken your lessons and learned the ways of a true Hippus.

In your studies as a shaman, you were also taught something of medicine, and you believe that you can put that knowledge to good use here. You must stop the person or people who killed your son from ever killing again.

Objective: You want to successfully immunize Six innocents.

Special Ability: Immunization. Once per night you have the ability to immunize a person against poison. You are positive that there was poison in your son’s bloodstream when he died as he has all the marking of it. This is the best way that you know of to get back at the brutal killer who murdered your son.

Name: Stuck in Pi Silver-rider
Position in Family: Wife
Job Title: The Star Gazer
Victory Condition: Innocent Victory
Affiliation: Good

You believe in the sacred nature of the stars above all else, even the religion of the Hippus. Much to your husband The Shaman’s displeasure, you are an apostate. You don’t believe in Tali, but rather the mystical power of the stars to answer all questions in life.

Thus it has become your quest to destroy religion in general, and stop your son, The Rider, from going further down the path of Tali.

Objective: Your husband must die for the religious zealot that he is.

Special Ability: Starry Answers. The stars will aid you on your quest to destroy religion by revealing who in fact belongs to a religious cult of any kind. You may ask the stars if one person belongs to a religion per night, and they will answer as well as give the name of the religion.

Item: Telescope. What would a women like you be without her telescope?

Name: Mythmonster Silver-rider
Position in Family: Son
Job Title: The Rider
Victory Condition: Innocent Victory
Affiliation: Good

You are a proud Hippus Rider, the son of The Shaman, who showed you the ways of Tali since birth. You feel very cramped in this ship, as you are used to the open plains and will be glad to leave. For now your goal is to avenge your brother, Rowen, by murdering his killer. An eye for the eye might make the whole world blind, but sometimes revenge is necessary.

At the same time, you find you mother, The Star Gazer, and her apostasy disturbing as she has forsaken Tali for the power of the stars.

Objective: You must kill the poisoner who killed Rowen.

Special Ability: Hunter. You have the ability to check the quarters of one person per night to see if they have poison in their possession. If they do, there is a good chance that they killed Rowen.

Additional Points:

1. The orb was responsible for choosing the wolves kill. This power could be broken in 4 ways:

a) The werewolves selected the person they thought had it and used their power to destroy it. I warned them not to do this unless absolutely necessary and it had the consequence of one wolf dying. This would end the infernal threat.

b) If the werewolves got the orb into their possesion they could break its power over them without stopping the infernals from coming.

c) The innocents could destroy it with a silver knife or silver cannon.

d) If the orb was used to target a wolf, the user or last holder of the orb would die and the connection would be broken.

2) To forge a silver knife, one needed the forge, the knife and the amulet. To use the forge anybody would need 3 str for this purpose. This includes the blacksmith.

3) Brisingamen would have lost her ability on the fourth night, to be informed on the fifth had she survived.

4) Normally poison was not an immediate killer, but once Renata had no chance to win I ended the game. Depending on str, poison would take 2-3 days.

5) The initial sabotage was caused by the orb, on Pinman's command.

6) The wolves also had three additional abilities:

a) Searcher: They could check one person/ night to see if they had the orb.

b) Scan: They could scan one person's starting PM for 1 str.

c) Block Lynch: They could sacrifice two str to determine who dies from the accusations. (Used on Niklas)

My strength was 4 in the end. I don't know if that was too high for you. I made the silver knife with the forge, the amulet and the knife and gave it to methos because I was worried that the one who broke the orb would die in the process :D. My aim was to survive.

See, Renata, you should have killed Niklas the night I died. You could have stopped the formation of the silver dagger thing.

Actually no, I was making the dagger, you'd have had to kill me. Which luckilly renata didnty think she could do. Sorry for not trusting you btw. :p

Yay, first place and last survivor. Woot !

First of all I have to say it was a most excellent game and Pinman was a near perfect GM.
I'm really sorry for Niklas as he deserves the 1st place as much as everyone else, but I told you I thought qoou was innocent...

Anyway, since I have some time I'll start working on a more complete AAR.

I have no time now, have to rush off to work. But I'll just quickly say great game!! Likely the most entertaining, if stamina-draining ;), NotW I've played.

Also I have to give my compliments to Renata for playing an absolutely brilliant game! I was so sure you were innocent right up until qoou died. You really only made one error - you should have said qoou was neutral. If you had, we would have still fumbled in the dark by now, the orb would have been destroyed, and you could have picked us off one by one. Glad you didn't... ;)

Wow, Renata, well played. Apart from a brief period after first talking to Niklas and Methos, I never even thought of suspecting you. Well done to the innocents, too, for working out what to do! :goodjob:

And of course, thanks Pinman for making this enthralling game! I very much enjoyed playing my mentally ill character (things you might not have realised about the cannoneer: 1) she got progressively more lucid as more people died and 2) due to the way cannonballs are piled up, she could only count in square numbers).

mythmonster: Actually I killed you. If I targeted a wolf with the orb, I would've died instead, and you were looking very innocent at that point. I tried LightFang because he was my second-choice possible wolf after qoou, IIRC, so at least that worked out.

How did Renata have no chance to win? Wouldn't the infernals have come?

Pinman tells me I could actually have won if I had targetted Methos instead of Niklas on the last night.  But I never really considered that Kol.7 would give the knife to Methos; I thought it was most likely he would ask for the orb instead. I knew I couldn't target Kol.7 directly, so I gambled on choosing Niklas instead, hoping that Methos had enough doubts about Kol to demand that a third party destroy the orb.

As for me being doomed once the orb was successfully destroyed, they all knew I was the wolf once qoou died. So it just would have been a couple of days of pointless twiddling of thumbs waiting around for me to be lynched.

My strength was 4 in the end. I don't know if that was too high for you.

Yep. My strength was only 2. That gave me no end of frustration. :)

You really only made one error - you should have said qoou was neutral. If you had, we would have still fumbled in the dark by now, the orb would have been destroyed, and you could have picked us off one by one. Glad you didn't...

Actually I couldn't have picked you off one by one. I didn't have the strength -- I could never have tackled Kol.7, for instance. And I knew there was at least *some* suspicion against me out there; with so few players left, I didn't think I could count on being able to hold out much longer. That's what made me decide to gamble everything on one brazenly false accusation, to buy time to get to the last night, where I could hope you'd mess up the orb destruction, or that I could disrupt it somehow. And I did sort of forget about the poison until it was too late.

I made plenty of mistakes, really. Encouraging Tasslehoff to support me against Niklas was one of the big ones -- there were a whole lot of unintended consequences that sprang from being wrong about Niklas' role in the game. Niklas, you know me from SGOTM 7: ideas I have plenty of, but I don't always think things through as well as I should!

I still want to know what happened the first night with Backwards Logic, why no one tried "suicide scanning" until Catharsis did (or did you? I couldn't quite fit D'Artagnan59's death into the previous pattern), and a bunch of other things that aren't coming to mind right now.

Ekolite
Jun 12, 2008, 09:06 AM
We didnt try suicide scanning until catharsis because niklas has a prophet ability for a while which made that unnecessary to a certain extent and too valuable to waste. Then when he died, I took the orb, my objective was to survive so I didn't want to try anything risky. Niklas targeted BL at random on the first night because he didnt know what the orb would do.

Out of interest, Pinman: if the silver knife (or cannonball) had been made earlier, would it have been possible to give it to the orb-holder, tell that person to attack themselves (speak their own name into the orb), and watch as wolves suicided against it one by one? That would've been fun. :D

@ Kol.7 -- I finally got around to reading Niklas' PM, and that cleared some things up. How'd you all figure out that targetting a werewolf would kill the holder of the orb?

@ Pinman -- There's a mistake in my PM; my objective included killing the Hippus shaman (D'artagnan), not gaining a weapon.

Then, I died.
Sorry for killing you. But you were spreading lies about me, and I was pretty sure you were innocent, so... :mischief:

Congrats to the innocent team, and a big-sarcastic-thank-you to Niklas, for having the brilliant idea of killing me the first night. Thanks. :p
Well... at least our team won, no? And had you killed me, that could have been very different, so can you really fault me? :mischief:

Seriously though, I had no idea when I targetted you what the orb would actually do. Sure I guessed it was evil, but I actually didn't once consider that it would be guiding the kills. But I targetted you for exactly the right purpose it seems - I killed your husband, and I remember telling Pinman that if the orb did something bad to you, no big deal since you were likely the one who most wanted me dead after that. And now I see I was right! :D (But I also remember telling him that if it did something good, you would be a valuable ally.)

@Niklas: I hate playing in any team against you. :p
Right, that's why you should always strive to be on my side whenever you have the chance... :mischief: (Right Kol? :D)

Niklas, why'd you kill me? I found a werewolf!
As Catharsis said, it was him and not me that killed you, I was already dead at the time. But had I lived, you would actually have been my target too. With the orb mechanics in the game, being a known innocent was actually a liability, since it was a "safe kill" for us. That's how quite a few people died - Hitti-Litti, Charles Li, D'Artagnan, Chand, you.

I'll try to post a longer and more detailed AAR later tonight. If not tonight then tomorrow.

Night of the Wolves XIX, as experienced by Renata Plainsrider

Part 1 – Where is the orb?

We all got our PMs, and I wasn’t really pleased to be a wolf my first time out. But I decided to make the best of it. Besides our individual PMs, merciary, Tasslehoff, LightFang and I received a list of collective abilities that we could use if and when we wanted. One of these was to detect the orb (we got one guess per night), one to destroy it if we knew where it was (this would mean no kill for that night), and one to destroy it without losing a kill if we could ever gain possession of it ourselves. Pinman told us later that destroying the orb ourselves might have bad consequences, but we didn’t know this at the beginning, nor what the consequences would be. We could save one of us from lynching at the cost of 2 strength, and could obtain a player’s PM for 1 strength. And finally, we knew that we could gain a werewolf victory if we reached the land of the Infernals after ten days/if the Infernals reached us, no matter what else might happen. This is what I was playing for towards the end.

I didn’t like the fact that none of the four of us had any items or individual abilities; I thought it made us stand out too much. I suggested we might want to divvy up some of our group abilities and claim them as individual ones, but that suggestion never really went anywhere. I did, however, think that I might want to try being a false prophet. Based on the information we were given about being controlled by the orb, as well as all of the Ashen Veil stuff in Pinman’s room, I was convinced that the person who held the orb must be evil himself. (Pinman must have had a good laugh at that.  ) So if we could find that person (probably one of the few, maybe the only, evil person in the game aside from us), I could “expose” him and gain some control over who was thought guilty and who innocent down the line. (Similarly, anyone we checked who didn’t have the orb would probably be innocent and could be recruited as part of a trusted “prophet” group.) Plus, we’d have a shot at gaining the orb in an item vote.

I didn’t do anything right away, though, because LightFang decided to check Kol.7 for the orb, for reasons to do with his own objective, and made it clear that he’d be trying to ingratiate himself with Kol. I didn’t want to interfere. Instead, I had fun making an annoyance of myself in the main thread, basically doing the exact opposite of what wolves (or prophets for that matter) are supposed to do. Luckily for me, it didn’t quite get me lynched.

The second night’s choice for scanning was Niklas – jackpot.

Part Two – Whyyyyy isn’t anyone listening to me? Or, getting Niklas lynched (not).

I started my false prophet campaign on Day 3, by chatting up Catharsis. As a replacement for PrinceScamp, who had declared his innocence before leaving the game, I thought I could be sure he wasn’t evil. I claimed that I had scanned Backwards Logic the first night, only to see him killed, then Catharsis the second night. I wasn’t really sure if he believed my story, but pressed onward, telling him I suspected Niklas the most, but wanted to scan him the following night due to how good an ally he’d make if I were wrong. (And I had soooo many reasons to give for suspecting Niklas. Most of them were even the plain truth – remember, I was convinced he was evil!) In the meantime, Brisingamen had slipped up the previous day by joining a bandwagon against her “wife”, Gandhi_rules, something strange enough at that point in the game to give me a flimsy excuse to distrust her as well.

Accusing her brought me to Methos’s attention, as he PM’d me demanding to know why I’d just accused my own “father”. We had some conversations after that regarding who to suspect, which I BSed my way through as best as I could. I mentioned Niklas prominently, which must have triggered some suspicions, but didn’t tell him about the prophet thing, since he wasn’t “trusted” yet. Later, Methos came to me requesting that I accuse Izipo of possessing something evil, and I saw no reason to refuse. Anything to distract from the wolves!

I’m still not sure what exactly happened with that. I’m guessing that Niklas scanned Izipo and found him to be evil, then confronted him about it behind the scenes, at which point Izipo revealed the truth. Methos must have known this himself, because he told me only about a book of necromancy, something he couldn’t otherwise have known about, as the item prophet was inactive at that time. So why the public reveal? A test? In any case, the fact that Methos did not explicitly say that Izipo was evil would come in handy later on.

Meanwhile, Niklas organized the bandwagon on Brisingamen, and I “scanned” him that night. Evil, doncha know.

So the next day (day 4), Catharsis and I made plans to get Niklas lynched, and I eventually decided to “trust” Methos enough (due to him being right about Izipo’s book) to let him in on the secret. Methos pretended to play along. :p But this was the first point where I thought I was dead: Methos claimed knowledge of another prophet, one with the ability to detect alignment, which was very similar to what I claimed for myself. Pinman’s cleverness worked in my favor here; most of the good guys seem to have accepted the possibility that he’d done that on purpose just to create confusion.

The bandwagon against Niklas was coming along nicely though, or so I thought. I asked Tasslehoff to help me with it, figuring that a loose connection with one wolf wouldn’t hurt too much, especially once Niklas was confirmed as the evil, evil creature of nastiness I was so sure he was. Then Methos and Tyrs concocted their storm. I about popped a blood vessel with the frustration when Niklas was spared.

Overnight, I concocted a reason to scan Tolis (not evil). LightFang was starting to draw some suspicion, and I was determined to do everything I could not to be manipulated into “scanning” him. I wasn’t feeling very positive about my chances, though. Methos had apparently wanted me to scan *him*, and by not doing so I was convinced I had failed some kind of test.

But that was nothing compared to what I felt the next day (day 5)! For the second time I was convinced my cover was blown and it was all unraveling, as one by one all of my supposed allies told me sorry, but they weren’t going to vote for Niklas after all. And it was so obvious to me he was guilty, and I couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t so obvious to everyone else. The little I was told about Niklas’ story just made me more convinced he was selling everyone a line of BS. And not only was everything being revealed about the orb and the Infernals, which (in my mind) should have condemned Niklas in and of itself, but there’d even been another prophet (qoou) showing up to confirm that Niklas in fact possessed the orb. (Qoou PM’d Tasslehoff with the info, claiming it had come from someone else. Due to Methos’s earlier misdirection about Izipo’s necromancy book, I believed this information had in fact come from Methos and his allies. Thus making me even more confused.) I flounced my way through an aggrieved PM, only to be assured that I really was trusted, it was just that there were things going on that I didn’t know about. I didn’t know what to think. I was told only later that my false scan of Niklas had been written off as due to a distorting effect of the orb. Another case where I can thank Pinman for his sneakiness, I think.

In any case, I made a last-ditch effort to turn things around, asking Tasslehoff (who was already on the record as voting against Niklas) to forward qoou’s information to all and sundry. It didn’t work, just serving to throw suspicion upon Tasslehoff (bad) and qoou (good), and LightFang wound up tagged for execution. We wolves voted to use our save lynch ability and have Niklas killed instead, and you all know how that worked out.

Renata

Part 3: Ahhh, Enlightenment. And I lose my teammates.

The night after Niklas was killed, I had a very difficult time coming up with someone to “scan”. I deflected questions about it by saying that I had decided but didn’t want to say who it was until I had an answer, but in reality I was wracking my brain trying to come up with a rationale for scanning anyone but Tasslehoff or LightFang. Finally I came up with a reasonable-sounding (to my addled mind, anyway) rationale for “scanning” Izipo. I sent the “results” – evil – to my “allies” and went to bed early.

Sometime during that night, everything that had baffled me about Niklas’ innocence suddenly clicked, and I was able to fill in the details of the orb story for myself, almost everything I didn’t already know from our wolf PM. I was so excited! I couldn’t wait to get to the computer to share everything I’d figured out with everyone. But when I got to the computer, I found two things:
--- my “allies” were not pleased with my choice of Izipo. Tolis was particularly accusing, claiming I had already been told that Izipo was evil, so why did I waste the scan?
--- Kol.7 wanted me to help Izipo revive Niklas!

I was running on a total high, having figured out what I had about the orb. I fired off an indignant response to Tolis, saying that sorry, but actually I did not know that Izipo was evil, only that he possessed an evil item, and that if they’d wanted to avoid me scanning him they should have just told me so. And I told Kol.7 to stuff it, figuring my demonstrated distrust of him and Izipo would let me get away with it. (I later found out that merciary and LightFang had agreed to Kol’s request. I don’t remember what Tasslehoff did.)

Later, I wound up in an IM conversation with Methos, where I spilled everything I knew or thought I knew about the orb, and he basically said, “ok, that’s great you figured it out, but how does that help us now”? (The wolves were similarly unenthused when I laid it all out for them. ) Which was sort of funny, because half the reason I had undertaken the whole orb discussion with him (besides for my own satisfaction in figuring things out) was because I didn’t think anything I said could help the innocents. I did wind up suggesting wolfsbane as a possible anti-orb defense (I figured even if it was true it would work, someone else was sure to think of it besides me). And I agreed to scan Tasslehoff the following night – first, the revelations about the orb made it clear why all the good guys were suspecting anyone who targeted Niklas (and they were right to do so); second, all of us wolves were under the impression that Tasslehoff had lost all of his strength in saving LightFang, so he made a good sacrifice. (I think we were actually wrong about this and he did have one point left. Pinman changed our stats a couple of times, which confused us.)

I wanted Izipo to die that day. Not only would it delay any wolves’ deaths a little bit longer, but I had also managed to convince myself that everyone – wolves and innocents alike – was in imminent danger of losing the game – to Izipo and a resurrected Pinman! Think about it: Izipo was evil. He had a book of necromancy. He had access to the orb wherein Pinman was trapped (he was allied with Kol.7, and Kol.7 was a thief). And he was currently attempting an “experiment” whose goal was not actually named in the text of its wording. I thought we were doomed.

Unfortunately for me, I was only able to convince Catharsis of the danger (and that only temporarily), and Tasslehoff died instead, without me getting the chance to demonstrate by bona fides by scanning him as evil.

Somewhere around that time, I started having computer trouble. My internet connection slowed down to a crawl, making CivFanatics unusable for me. We had it fixed a few days later to the tune of $168 (and it wasn’t even a virus like I’d thought, just a router problem!), and the only silver lining to the whole thing was that I didn’t have to come up with a scan for that night.

I got back online sometime in day 7 to find merciary up on the chopping block, and Catharsis with plans to “suicide scan” LightFang. There was nothing I could do to prevent either one.

Part 4: Endgame. So near and yet so far.

On the night of Day 7, after merciary’s lynching, I decided to “scan” qoou, who had been attracting some suspicion. And I decided to call him as guilty. I knew by this point that I couldn’t hope to win in a game of attrition. I had only 2 strength, and no chance of getting more. (One of my biggest regrets for this game is that none of us wolves ever managed to acquire any useful items.) And I had little chance of getting Kol.7 (the major holder of the items, thanks to his thievery) lynched. So I decided to gamble everything on the good guys not being able to pull off the destruction of the orb, or on me being able to disrupt it somehow. To that end, I accused qoou to keep everyone’s thoughts away from me for as long as possible.

That’s basically it. Before he died, LightFang used his last strength point to get me Izipo’s PM, which confirmed his innocence and Niklas’, and I used that info to make a second “scan” of Niklas accurate. (I had been wondering if he had been resurrected as evil.) I killed Tolis on night 8 to further distract attention from me – people knew he’d been an ally and possibly knew he would have voted against qoou. On the last day, I learned from Methos that there was in fact a plan in place to destroy the orb (I had suspected it, but didn’t know for sure until then), and what he described sounded like it would work. So I figured my last shot was to try to kill the person who was trying to destroy the orb. As I mentioned in previous posts, I knew I couldn’t attack Kol.7 and win; I gambled on Niklas, and I guessed wrong. Oh well!

It was fun.

well, that was fun. Incredibly complex, and I would really like someone in the Kol-Methos-Niklas-Izipo group to point out what I had been missing. I have no clue what was happening there...

Well, the washing machine can wait :p, here's my take on the game :

Starting PM :

Name: Izipo Wavewalker
Position in Family: Wife
Job Title: The Healer
Victory Condition: Innocent Victory
Affiliation: Evil

You are a healer, the woman who treats the wounds of everybody on board the Nightingale, although this is not all that you are. Secretly, you are a dabbler in the evil arts of Necromancy, and it is your greatest hope to one day raise a member of the dead.

Assuming that you can get two people to participate in an experiment, and they must say: “I agree to participate in Izipo’s experiment”, you believe that you can transfer the life essence of those two people into a dead man.

It will take two nights of studying this book on necromancy once you learn the name of the person whom you wish to resurrect in order to prepare. Raising one of the dead is not something to be taken lightly.

When I first got my PM I was really disappointed. Evil ! Wtf ! and with an innocent victory ? And my objective, two days to accomplish ? No way I'm gonna pull this off.
So, I went sulking for a while and then came up with TEH PLAN !

I thought that the only way to manage both (objective and victory condition) was to use one or two wolves as volunteers in my 'experiment'. So first we had to get a lucky early wolf lynch, and then I would somehow contact who I suspected of being a wolf to propose my services in reviving their partner. I had the whole story ready, that I was evil, had an evil victory condition and that the drawback for a resurrection for my partners would be to turn them to evil beings, which they wouldn't care about, being evil already.

So I got into thinking mode and did some MetaGaming. I don't pretend to know Pinman well, but I suspected him to be a good GM (and I was right), so I thought he would try to have a perfect balance. In my mind there would be in each family a Wolf/Evil... And I was mostly right. Since I was the evil one in my family, I really thought my relatives were innocent and I could contact them with the whole story, being honest and all, and we could start scheming to get ourselves a wolf. Only Niklas answered my initial PM, which suited me fine since I know he's a l33t über detective. Little did I know he was the most important character of all (which I should have suspected since Pinman let slip that the characters assignments were not totally random).

So I guess it was day two or three that we started chatting on MSN, and I told him the truth about me and my theories. Well, It didn't work exactly like I had planned and Nik was really suspicious of me. What saved me is that he had scanned me earlier, found me evil, so I was useless as an orb target (didn't know that at the time). I left with a sense of impeding doom and woke up the next day to find my story all over the thread because of Renata (Methos really, but oh well).
I was in a gloomy mood that evening when I started to chat Niklas and Kol, but somehow I persuaded them of my usefulness and I got to live another day because Bris made a huuge mistake. Actually, I'm quite proud of the posts made that day, the roleplaying was fun and from that point on I decided to RP myself to death.

The boat crashed, I got the book back (had never lost it, in truth), and I was beginning to get fed up with my 'allies' (Nik and Kol) because they wouldn't tell me squat. I also went into paranoïd mode and started to suspect everyone, and Niklas at the forefront, right up till the end I was convinced he was going to pull a NotW VIII type of victory all by himself (solo evil win).

And then came the catastrophic death of my husband Niklas.

Already a tad bit angry with all the BS my partners had fed me, I had lost my only real connection to the action. I chatted with Kol but he wouldn't budge from his position and wouldn't explain anything, which further angered me. Then he went crazy about reviving Niklas. At first I didn't want to do it, but then I thought it would be great from an RP perspective, but I didn't want to contact anyone, so he took care of that. I vanished from the thread for two days to keep a low profile but also because I was fed up with the way things were going.
Then Kol started to have volunteers and we had to choose between qoou, Rheinmetall and Tyrs. I was adamant that I didn't want to kill Rhein (for personal reasons), but then qoou revealed that he was an item prophet and Kol.7 decided that he would be valuable and so we chose Tyrs (who knew he was going to die, kudos to him for the sacrifice) and, sadly, Rheinmetall.

Well, well, well I finally got my friend back and lo and behold, now they FINALLY believe I'm innocent and spill the whole story. A shock when I finally understood all about the orb followed by an Intense brainstorming that night and we correctly identified Merciary. Niklas was also convinced that qoou was a wolf despite my claims that he couldn't be because he had voluntereed to revive him.
At that point some things were beginning to bug me. First of all there was a lot of prophets ! One of them must be a false one. Second Renata and Methos' names were turning up rather often and since the start I was convinced that Pinman had chosen at least one of the 'mods' to be a wolf... And again I was right. For some reason I didn't voice that too much and besides I was convinced Methos was the wolf, whom Nik had positively IDed as innocent (thanks to Tolis), so I let it go.

We got Merciary, then Catharsis died while 'suicide scanning' LF and we got him too. I thought we had won and was quite surprised when the game kept on going.
Not at home for the week, I was unable to chat my suspicions and thus watched with regret when qoou got lynched.
You know the rest.

So, really, an amazing game.
Pinman I'm gonna say it again, but thank you very much for the excellent setup and first class GMing :goodjob::hatsoff:
Another one I survived to the end, another feather in my hat. I'm really sorry Niklas had to die the last night because most of the credit for the innocent win should go to him. I'm really looking forwad to his AAR.

Thanks to everyone for a really entertaining game and all the efforts that most of you put into the roleplay part; It really gave the game a great feel. In particular, congrats to Renata for nearly winning but also for RPing his part really well. Catharsis your character was great too, I had fun reading your posts.

I'm exhausted, but I can't wait for NotW XX, it's gonna be a blast (I hope :mischief:).

Bolded the important bit. IMO, even if a GM were to write the names of the wolves in block capitals in the thread title, if s/he keeps a regularly-edited first post, then s/he is a good GM. ;)

The funniest PM I received in this game was from Renata. At this point, Methos had defected and was supporting Niklas, and Renata assumed that Tolis was going to do the same, so she PMed me telling me to inform the thread that I was in contact with a prophet that had found Niklas to be evil. At this point, I was also completely under Niklas's sway, and as such, wouldn't do so.

So Renata took my reply and sent her answer to me, Methos and Tolis, detailing her displeasure with the whole affair, and for a moment it was just like being hauled up in front of the class for passing notes. I almost expected Renata to ask me if I'd brought enough gum for everyone. :scared:

Yeah, it was me, but that was the plan. We knew you were evil from Niklas’s scan and decided to have you lynched, figuring evil meant wolf. Not wanting to be the one who started the accusation, I instead approached Renata. After she accused you and I followed suit was when both Tolis and Niklas made comments about keeping you around. Had my teammate Tolis not also sought to keep you alive, I would have seriously questioned Niklas’s motives. I was rather worried what Renata would think when I came back stating that I was pulling my accusation towards you. I knew it would make Renata suspicious. In a way I was hoping it would make her suspicious enough to scan me, thereby strengthening our alliance. Since she was a wolf this had to seriously stoke her paranoia!

That was one of the things that kept throwing me off about Renata. All her PM's were to multiple players. Seemed odd behavior for a wolf.

I’m having trouble remembering what happened on what day, so if someone wishes to know something just ask and I’ll do my best to answer. Doing a full write-up is proving to be rather difficult.

In Niklas's game you basically ignored me or it would take you a while before every replying to my PMs. This game, as I said, I was really bored at work and you were online and you answered me very quickly. A rather weightless point, but something that made me wonder about you.

Had the innocents not beached the ship, they would have never learned:

a) That Pinman's killer was not evil.
b) That the Nightingale exists.
c) That the infernal's imminent arrival was linked to the Nightingale.
d) That it was vulnerable to the same things as werewolves, ie: Silver.

Life according to Niklas, part I

Ok, since I seem to procastinate over writing my entirely too long AAR, and also seem to be very tired these days, I've decided to chop it up into smaller chunks and write each when I feel up to it. Hopefully that'll get me rolling.

Startup

For me the game started with a shock. Ok, so I'm a prophet, again.... and I'm also the killer of the Captain, who admittedly was a really nasty guy, but who would believe that if I told them? I'm also a thief, having stolen some ruby-like crystal thingey, and people will be after me for both the murder and the theft. Hey, I'm a good guy! I swear the orb compelled me to take it with me! Needless to say I decided to stay very low initially, having zxcvbmn's game fresh in mind.

First day I can't even remember, except that I defended Renata in the thread. Good move that. Anyway, later that night I decided to scan Chand, who could be a good ally and was also my in-game daughter. But when the scan came up "neutral" I didn't dare to make that contact, not knowing if he might betray me later on. I also spoke Backwards Logic's name into the orb. I didn't know what it did at the time, but my reasoning was this: if it's a good thing, BL will make a good ally - if it's a bad thing, I'll have hurt the one who is most likely to want me dead after killing her husband. Turns out that was a good move at least, could have been nasty, BL has later confessed that he planned to check me the upcoming night.

Shocks aplenty

Second morning, and I got quite a shock. Not only was I a prophet, a murderer and a thief, I was also seemingly responsible for the "wolf kills". Further, Pinman (GM) told me that I somehow "knew" that if I spoke a wolf's name into the orb, I would die instead. Ok, so that confirmed that there were wolves, at least in the metaphorical sense, meaning I wasn't the only one killing people. I decided to stay even lower, but that proved difficult since several people wanted to talk to me about the game. In particular I talked to Kol, who outright told me he was neutral, making me wary of him too. But he pushed me hard on several points, and in a weak moment I told him I had a crystal - big mistake. I also talked a bit to Methos, but neither of us fully trusted the other. I also sent out a few feelers to people who might have tools of some sort that could help me take care of the orb (which was my objective). Hitti-Litti answered openly, but negatively, which made me believe he was innocent...

Second night I killed Hitti-Litti, not knowing who could be a wolf or not. I felt really bad for abusing HL's openness, but I saw no other way out. Then I got another shock. My orb was stolen! Yikes! And now someone knew about it, and what it did. Ok, only one person who could possibly have done that, since I had so stupidly mentioned it - Kol!! So I angrily called him up, and he didn't even deny it. Instead he blackmailed me to tell him everything about it, in order to give it back to me. I told him enough that he would give it back to me, which he did! From that point on I was certain Kol was innocent, otherwise he would have kept it, and I decided to work with him, though still a bit wary due to his professed neutrality. But I realized that his thieving ways would be very handy in case I was killed or betrayed, since he could then steal the orb back from whoever got it after me.

... and some more shocks

That night I scanned Izipo, whom I had worked well with previously, and who was also "my wife" - evil! Whoa, good luck already, we've got our first wolf! Now several interesting things happened. First of all, since Izipo had voted for Tolis the day before, that made me believe strongly that Tolis was innocent. So I contacted him, told him about Izipo's guilt which would prove my own innocence to Tolis. I also told Methos and Kol, as well as Chand, so I could be sure to have some support in voting for Izipo. I didn't tell anyone I was the prophet though, but they all figured it out sooner or later anyway.

We decided to lay low for a bit early on in the day though, to give Izipo a chance to vote for someone (who would then be innocent), and give me a chance to talk to him to try to milk him for information. Ok, so there's the next shock. I call on Izipo, and he says "hey, I've been meaning to talk to you, I have the most weird character you could imagine - evil but with an innocent victory condition". And that before I had a chance to tell him anything at all! Pressing him, what he told me didn't make total sense (like that his objective would be to betray the wolves), but enough made sense that I actually believed him. He showed me his book, and let me hold it. I was quite confused, but still decided that Izipo didn't deserve to die after all. So I tell my contacts what has aspired, and go to bed for the night. When I get back the next day, it turns out that Methos (and Tolis, though I didn't know at the time) were suspicious of my motives for wanting to save an evil character, and had set things in motion on their own. Methos contacted Renata, and a bandwagon formed on Izipo. I felt quite bad about it, he had told me everything and because of that he would be lynched.

Then came the next interesting thing. Methos and Tolis came out of the closet with their relationship, both vouching for the other to be innocent. Ok, so either both are wolves and taking a huge risk, or they are telling the truth. I found the latter much more likely. But I still didn't like that they had gone behind my back regarding Izipo, and I was debating with several people if and how Izipo could/should be saved. Izipo played along as well as he could, without being kept in the loop at all. Finally we decided to lynch Stuck in Pi instead in a quick upset - but literally seconds before we start a bandwagon on him he shows up to support Izipo. Hmm, time for plan B. Brisingamen was a valid target due to the slip up regarding the "wife voting", and for being adamant regarding Izipo. I cast the first vote, and a lot of people followed, more than I expected. I afterwards said that I thought people were waiting for someone to point out a valid target, and I still think that's true. A pity we killed a prophet though.

Aftermath of a bandwagon

That night I killed Charles Li. He had gone inactive, and Tolis had hinted that he had him under his wing. Knowing Tolis and knowing Charles Li (and perhaps in particular knowing Pinman), I was pretty sure I could count on Charles being innocent, which he was. I also scanned Catharsis that night. Methos claimed to have contact with "his sister" already, so I let him do the first approaching and talking. Another bad move it would turn out, since it nearly led to my death.

The bandwagon on Izipo felt like a turning point in the game. Suddenly we had a group of people who were actually actively working together. I had the orb and could steer the kills, and we could pack a good punch in the voting as well. Izipo was still kept out of the loop though, since no one completely trusted him. He was evil after all. But he claimed to be content with being used, despite what he said in his AAR. :p

The other side of the coin was that our growing power also made me even more of a target for the wolves. But that'll have to come in a part II, too tired to write on right now.

Life according to Niklas, part II

Continuing from after the bandwagon on Bris, the next interesting thing came when I was contacted by Stuck in Pi. Up to that point he was at the top of my list of suspects, admittedly for almost purely metagame reasons. Two others who were high up on that list were Frozen In Ice and LightFang, and had I been asked there and then to name the three wolves in the game I would have chosen those three (didn't know at that point that there were actually four). But then Stuck in Pi contacts me to say he is a prophet of sorts, and that he has scanned me and found me not to be a religious zealot. He has also previously scanned Frozen In Ice and LightFang and found them to be innocent too. Ok, big confusion. Were I just contacted by a wolf who named his fellow wolves hoping to draw suspicion away from them? That seemed a very stupid move to do for a wolf so I didn't believe it. But I still wondered what Stuck in Pi was up to. I happened to know that I was "the" prophet, and I also recalled a discussion I had with Pinman before the game started about how he doesn't really like the idea of prophets at all. so the probability he would have included not just one but two seemed quite far-fetched.

My life at stake

During the day, I suddenly found myself under barrage from several directions, under flimsy excuses that I had tried to get Tolis lynched. I was told that a lot of people - Tasslehoff and D'Artagnan in particular - were sending PMs claiming to have "proof" of my guilt. Catharsis and Renata were two of those who were clearly against me, and Methos started acting really strange. He wanted to do an experiment, he wanted to have my orb, but he didn't want to tell me why. Suspicion level suddenly soared, and I practically told him that if he didn't come clean with what it was all about then I would have to waste a scan to check him that night. He made the right choice (;)), and I learnt that Renata was also a prophet, who had scanned me and found me evil! And Methos thought this might be because of the orb I was holding, that it overshadowed the scans, so he wanted to arrange another scan of me while he held the orb. I didn't like that for several reasons, partly because I was still suspicious of his motives, but perhaps most because I was baffled that there was yet another prophet in the game. Say wha...? Still, her story (retold through Methos) made a lot of sense, and metagame-me didn't think Renata could possibly be a wolf. At any rate I contacted Catharsis at this point, not wanting to wait for communication through Methos, but Catharsis made it very clear he wouldn't believe my "convenient words".

Then Methos came to me asking if I thought it would be a good idea if we could stop the ship. Yes! Yesyesyes! Stop the ship dangit! He claimed that he and Tyrs had the power to stop the ship together, though he wouldn't say how. But he also said something else - that if they did, there might not be a lynching that night. I didn't like that "might not", and I was very nervous towards the end of the day. I tried to get Methos to support me since I was up to die, but he didn't see a need, which again made me somewhat suspicious. Luckily he was telling the truth it turned out.

But before my "death", I sent Catharsis a long PM detailing my thoughts on my allies, my suspicions about some others, and the fact that I killed the captain. He was the only one I knew to play a Good character, so I wanted him to have the best chance to continue if I died. I didn't have time to tell him everything about the orb though, since I had to send the PM before my "death" was supposed to take place. I was hoping I would still live, hoping that Methos was right and that there would be no death, and that my "last words" would sway Catharsis. And it seems they, with some follow-up conversations, did the trick. That meant I wouldn't have to risk another lynch, since I also thought Catharsis and Methos together could convince Renata of my innocence.

Survivor

I was happy to see that I had washed up on the shore together with everyone else. That night I scanned Stuck in Pi whom I was still very suspicious of, and lo and behold, he was of Good alignment. That was quite a shock, since I thought that meant that he would be right about Frozen In Ice and LightFang too, if Good then why would he lie about it? I didn't stop to consider Pinman's twisted mind until quite some time later.

I killed D'Artagnan that night. I knew through Izipo that D'Artagnan could immunize against poison, in my mind an ability highly unlikely for a wolf to have. And he was sending people PMs claiming he had proof of my guilt! That plus some more metagame thinking made the choice easy. First kill I didn't feel any remorse for, he was after my hide after all!

Up for the lynch again

Everything was looking pretty good at this point, with one rather serious exception. We had absolutely no idea whatsoever who could be a wolf. No leads, no clues, no nothing. What we had was a whole bunch of people scanned and found innocent by one prophet or another. At this point I was again starting to question whether there were any wolves at all, or if I and the orb were the only killers. Methos and Catharsis had some similar ideas, but I kept coming back to Pinman's earlier words, including the writeup where Bris jumped ship, which explicitly mentioned werewolves. That gave me some new resolve - but sadly still no leads.

The vote seemed to come down to me or LightFang. With the support I had at that time, I wasn't really worried, though I almost screwed it up by waiting too long (and one of my dogs decided to go on a bit of a solo adventure). I made it back just in time, though Catharsis had already handled it. But I didn't really want to see LightFang killed, I didn't think he was guilty after Stuck in Pi's words. Had I had more time I would have tried to save him. Maybe it was just as well that I didn't. And in the end it didn't matter at all, since I died in his place regardless.

The fight with Captain Pinman was of course completely unexpected, but it did answer a few questions, such as how and where Pinman still survived. After that I was dead, and could only hope that Izipo would return the favor by saving me. But that's a story for part III.

They didn't try very hard! I'm not sure why, and I'm not sure if they could have convinced me if they had told me your entire story rather than just a few dribs and drabs. It's interesting that Pinman intended the "washed up on a desert island" story to reveal that the holder of the orb was innocent, but I had always thought of the orb-stealer as an evil rival of Pinman's anyway, so the revelation had no effect. Guess I have a one-track mind.

I can't believe Kol.7 stole the orb! Cheeky, cheeky. And that Methos tried to get it once. You could have proven me a liar very easily that way.

I should also mention that at one point when I was planning the false prophet thing, LightFang suggested the exact same "explanation" for Niklas turning up innocent as you all came up with on your own. I thought it would never work. :crazyeye:

I felt you wouldn't be convinced about his innocence. I feared that the more I tried to convince you, the more you'd push away.

And that Methos tried to get it once. You could have proven me a liar very easily that way.

My plan was to get Niklas to pass the orb off and have Renata scan Niklas again. This way (assuming Renata really was a prophet) she'd either come back that he was good or if she didn't then I knew she was lying. I didn't really want the orb, but knew it was the only way I would know for certain Niklas didn't have it. My main fear is Renata would have scanned me instead while I held the orb and that would have made me appear evil.

This is great stuff! Looking forward to part 3.

I was hoping there was a truly evil character in the game other than the wolves (and Pinman), and the PM didn't help in that regard. But Izipo's nominal evil-ness gave me a small excuse to "scan" Niklas a second time, which killed a day, and the PM let me know the right answer.

Life according to Niklas, part III

I died and was floating around in some sort of infinite featureless continuum of nothingness - incredibly frustrating. Normally when you die in a game like this, at least you can go talk to other dead people. But because of the Necromancer in the game, I was strictly forbidden to talk to anyone at all. A cool feature of the game, but very frustrating when you're dead. For me I guess it was a good thing since it allowed me to come back, but everyone else who died was under the same quarantaine rules, not knowing if they would be raised.

Back in the loop

Anyway, I died, and Kol immediately started "fund raising". He did a great job working to get me back, and taking the temperature of the other participants at the same time.

During my absence I saw Tasslehoff killed, and finally we had some tangible lead! On the night after I was resurrected, though Pinman stripped me of my prohpetic powers, making the exchange of 2 for 1 rather expensive. I'd like to think I redeemed myself, but it was still frustrating. The reason I lost my powers was that I only had them through my unwilling connection to Captain Pinman in the first place, and when we fought it off that connection was severed.

At any rate, the situation now was very very different. Previously we had been wallowing totally in the dark, not even knowing with certainty that there truly were wolves. Now we had one killed, and two more obvious associates in merciary and qoou, who had been trying to save Tasslehoff in the vote. I immediately (ehrm, well, after some RL business to take care of) started a bandwagon on merciary, and we got ourselves a second wolf hide.

Orb woes

Then there was the issue of the orb, that needed to be destroyed. We had a pretty decent idea on how it should be done - using the silver from the amulet - but getting all the pieces in place proved trickier. We needed the forge of course, but it wasn't until I finally got to see the description of it that I realized how it should be done. It could be used to "combine" items, assuming you had str 3. "Combine" the silver with some other item and then kill the orb. Actually my original plan was to simply combine the silver with the orb directly, enclosing it, but Kol had a better plan.

Anyway, I first tried to convince Kol to give the forge and the silver to Catharsis, along with enough strength items to make sure (s)he had enough to use it. But suddenly Kol refused, claiming he wasn't sure I hadn't been raised as a wolf, and questioned my motives for wanting the orb destroyed. Sigh, not the right time to start getting suspicious :p. But he complied to at least go with the plan, if he could be the one to use the forge.

Luckily he managed to convince Catharsis to let go of the cannon, giving him the +1 strength needed (he already had the dagger stolen from LightFang earlier). But Catharsis wouldn't give him the orb, and before we really had time to discuss it he instead started the process of combining the silver with the brittle knife, which would give us a knife of silver. Turns out that was the right move, especially considering what happened to Catharsis on the night after. If (s)he had done the forging instead of Kol, we would have been infernal breakfast.

Sacrifice of Catharsis

Come night I had concocted another plan. We had to kill someone with the orb, and then we could vote to kill the last wolf, qoou, on the next day. But there was another option - since we couldn't be totally sure that qoou was guilty, we could use the orb on him in a suicide scan. That way we'd either know for sure of his guilt, losing one innocent to the orb instead of someone we picked to die. Or we would find out that he was innocent, thus only losing an innocent who we would have planned to vote for the next day anyway.

Catharsis had a similar plan - except with a different target it turned out. I didn't know about it though, but Methos did. Catharsis died in a suicide scan, exposing LightFang as a wolf. That was unexpected for several reasons. First it made it obvious that Stuck in Pi's ability was of no use. Second it brought our attention back to (GM) Pinman's words about the four horsemen. There were four wolves, not three, and qoou was still the last one of them, obviously . So when Renata "scanned" him and found him evil, it was only a confirmation of what we already knew. If she had come back and said he was something else, I'm actually not sure I would have believed her, or rather I might have concluded that her ability was as useful as Stuck in Pi's. That's how sure I was about qoou.

LightFang never had a chance on the vote the day after, never having a chance of course. During the night, Methos was to kill the "useless" Stuck in Pi, but luckily for him the orb's sway over the wolves was broken. Tolis died instead, and we had a hard time figuring out why. But we were so close now that it wouldn't matter anyway, the last wolf wouldn't be alive another night for another kill.

Killing the last wolf - not

On the day after I started another bandwagon on qoou. He was quickly beyond hope, but he tried bravely to clear his name. I called him up on AIM to talk to him, thinking to catch him in a lie. Instead he told a very believable story, holding on to it even past the time when I claimed I no longer had the ability to save him (which was true, everyone who could have changed their votes had gone to bed). Bewilderment set in, but there was truly no time to stop it. But even before the results were revealed by Pinman, I knew in my heart that we had failed, and that the last wolf was the lying "prophet" Renata.

When I saw Kol and Methos online the next day, I told them of my conclusion, and Kol reminded us that he still had the poison. Bingo! Use the poison on Renata, kill the orb with the knife, and we win! Methos had received the orb in the vote, and Kol grudgingly agreed to hand over the knife as well. Then it was simply a matter of crossing fingers and praying. I didn't realize how close we were to losing anyway though - of course we should have given Methos the necessary strength items for protection, but the thought never crossed my mind. Luckily (:gripe:) Renata picked me over Methos, and we got an innocent win.

On the last day I also got a message from Frozen In Ice about joining him on his boat trip. Since I was so sure we were winning, I saw no reason to agree. It would have felt like running from the final battle. Too bad I went and died instead... :crazyeye:

In conclusion I'd just like to say thanks to my buddies Kol and Methos for a solid team performance, to Izipo for doing the best you could even when placed in the refridgerator, to Catharsis for another remarkable team performace and sacrifice, and to Renata (and the other wolves) for giving us a merry chase, and for a brilliant first entry to the NotWs :hatsoff:. And of course to Pinman for the great game, and everyone else who participated to make it a great experience! Thanks all! :goodjob:

Now to get some well-needed rest before the next one starts...

Actually you wouldn't have been infernal breakfast had Catharsis done the forging. The half finished knife would simply have gone up for a vote.

Great summary though, mine will come sometime soon. Thanks for putting in the effort.:goodjob:

Yes, thanks for the AAR.

Looking forward to yours too, Pinman.

On a side note, I was looking at the logs of some of our conversations... and in hindsight they really are hilarious.

I think qoou got one of the rawest deals in this game. Come in midway, use your legitimate prophet powers the very first night on the same player the wolves are targetting, get sucked into supporting one of those same wolves, thus drawing even more suspicion than you already had, then ultimately get framed by yet another wolf. Kind of a rude welcome. Poor qoou. :(

:(.

It was pretty fun finally playing a game where everyone was smart/mature though (I played this in RL a few times).

most (if not all) of the NOTW games here are with smart/mature people... It's one of the things that makes it so attractive and fun...
