Rules

A few notes ( Taken from Niklas, as to quote him, " Stealing is the best form of flattery")

Firstly, there will be no lynching and no voting. Yes, you heard right. But of course that doesn’t mean that the werewolves will be allowed free reign. Instead of voting and lynching, something that has always struck me as somewhat out of place and breaking the suspension of disbelief (why the heck would you start voting people to the gallows??), there will be a system of what I call accusation. Instead of placing a vote for a person, you instead state your believe that a particular person might be guilty. So how does this differ from voting? Not much at all really, the only difference is that it helps putting the accusations (votes) into a roleplaying perspective. This is simply to encourage more immersive gameplay, and less of the “I vote for stupid” kind of play. To accuse someone you might say “That Niklas is a sly one, I wouldn’t trust him one inch.” You can also still support a person instead of a accusing, so to counter the above you might say “Bah, if Niklas is guilty I swear I’ll eat my halberd.” Yep, you guessed it, I will use the colors black and (dark) green to explicitly separate accusations from supports.
The person who most people accuse being guilty will be killed in some unspecified mob-induced way. It will not be a hanging though, each situation will likely be unique (subject to GM imagination) and much more impromptu.
So as you will see, this is still very similar to voting and lynching, even though it isn’t. The only real gameplay difference is that anyone who says “I vote for Stupid to hang”, or something equivalent, will not be considered to have accused anyone (a vote is not an accusation) and what they said will not count towards the total. You may of course still use the words “vote” and “hang” if you put it into a proper roleplaying perspective. Just remember that there are no votes and no hangings and you’ll be fine.

Secondly, I will allow the use of voices, as specified by the info thread, and as used by Catharsis recently. You can use both public and secret speeches (each of you will have a voice), to be PM’d to me prior to the evening or morning post, and they will be incorporated in the scene where someone dies (or is found dead).

Thirdly, In this game, your job title is not public, only your surname and role in your family. As such, it is your choice whether or not to reveal it.

Fourthly, items may be traded freely, either publically and privately.

Fifthly, read the info thread and have fun.

I just wanted to point out the chain of victory:

First Place:

Good: *Insert Victory condition Here*, Self Survived, Objective fulfilled

Neutral: *Insert Victory Condition Here*, Objective fulfilled, Self survived

Evil: *Insert victory Condition Here*, Objective Fulfilled, Self Survived

Second Place:

Good: *Insert Victory Condition here*, Objective fulfilled

Neutral: Self Survived, Objective fulfilled

Evil:*Insert victory Condition Here*, Objective Fulfilled

Third place:

Good: *Insert Victory Condition here*, Self Survived

Neutral: Objective Fulfilled

Evil:*Insert victory Condition Here*, Self Survived

Please Keep this in mind.

Morning 1

The records would later refer to it as the massacre, or occasionally among academic histories the catalyst. No men sung songs of the sea shouted in drunken merriment that morning, or indeed for a long time after, nor did birds riding above the clouds emit their joyful chirps to welcome the sunrise. It was a dark day, and everybody knew it.

The men and women residing within The Nightingale awoke late that fateful morning a sure sign that something was wrong. Even the passengers, both the Hippus and the Dwarves, recalled the sound of the Captain ringing the great bell on the deck calling them all to wake. He hadn't rung it that morning, as the sleepy yet curious passengers and sailors alike were about to discover, because he couldn't.

His wife Backwards Logic Riverking found him first, by barging angrily into the cabin that he had claimed as his own. Of course, she promptly fainted at the sight, so the others had no warning about what to expect. Captain Pinman lay dead in his cabin, a knife stabbed right through his breast. Although the captain had died quickly, it appeared that his murderer had other plans for the former leader. The captain's blood was spread out on the floor in a series of strange runes, which nobody on the Nightingale admitted to understanding. Lying next to the bloody shapes, was a book identified as belonging to a priest of the Ashen Veil, however the blood had rendered it unreadable.

Although there was a general rush away from the Captain's Cabin towards the toilets, one clever sailor opened up Captain Pinman's clenched fist to discover a bloody silver amulet with the engraving Nightingale on it. He decided to bring the matter up later.

At the same time, curious that they could not find their son Rowen anywhere, the Silver-riders went to check on him in his cabin. What they found shocked them to the core. Rowen Silver- rider was lying in bed, deader than Elvis but he was not alone. In the bed with him was Adriana Hammerfist who was also dead. Neither of the two had a mark on them and both appeared to have been poisoned. Both the Hippus and Dwarf family involved joined the lines to empty their stomachs.

After a half hour to clear their heads, those left standing decided that going up on deck to get some air was a mighty good idea. It might even help them figure out what their next move should be. Obviously there had to be consequences. Somebody had to pay for these vile crimes.

Lekkric, tuxedohamn and Conroe Riversnake had always enjoyed climbing up the mast. It drove their parents, PrinceScamp and Rougeknight to distraction, but they still went ahead with their fun. That fateful day, with the adults occupied elsewhere, the three children decided to climb up the mast as they usually did. They were just starting to have fun when a cracking noise was heard on the deck. In their horror, Catharsis and Rougeknight ran up to the mast screaming for their children to come down but it was to no avail. the mast snapped in half plunging the three children to their deaths and impaling their two parents who were standing close by.

There was utter silence on the deck as each remembered that the mast shouldn't have fallen, in fact couldn't have fallen, unless somebody had weakened its supports. There was a saboteur aboard the Nightingale. The silence continued until the brave fellow who picked up the bloody silver amulet came forward and placed it on the ground. Nobody remembered who he was afterwards, but he said " I think we should vote on this, the captain had it clutched in his hand when he died and I think he would have wanted us to do things democratically". That suggestion brought on another one, that the Lanun should elect a Captain from amongst their members. This was also agreed to, and the survivors became determined as the last suggestion was give. Everyday they would vote on somebody to lynch, starting today, to kill those responsible for the brutal massacre.

Of course, there was no way that this morning could end like this, with a semblance of happiness, thought all as yet another terror struck them. The Nightingale had begun moving of its own accord! A map maker quickly looked at his map to determine their destination based on their bearing and followed the trend set by Backwards Logic. That is to say that he promptly fainted. A few brave souls looked over at his map and gulped. The Nightingale was headed right towards the land of the Infernals!

All around them the stranded men and women began to hear a sound, neither good nor evil in its nature. They began to hear a song, a tragic song. They heard the Song of the Nightingale.

This day will be 72 hours long. The first 24 hours are for roleplaying as well as item adn captain voting.
The final 48 hours are for the death vote.

Votes for the Bloody Amulet should be in Silver.
Votes for the Captain should be in Blue. (Lanun Only)
Accusations should be in Black.
Supports should be in Green.

Yes, now that you have the cast list and the morning 1 post, you are allowed to make your own posts. The rules are still coming, but for veteran NoTW players, you don't need them.

The one thing to note is that this game runs on Niklas' accusation system.

OOC: Wait, why does an entire family of players get eliminated?

Pinman
May 11, 2008, 08:23 PM
OOC: The easy answer is poetic license. The more complicated answer is that we didn't have enough players to fill that family, so i gave it a memorial. It was a planned part of the game.

A tragedy. The captain was someone dear to me. I will have his death avenged.

Therefore, I say, his son, Kol.7, be our captain now. Lead us now in this time. It is what your father would have wanted. For his son to be captain and lead on in his stead.

Furthermore, as for this bloody amulet...I say we give it to his loving wife, Backwards Logic, so she can remember him with it.

Honestly, how could this have happened...

*sniff* "My dear husband Pinman!" Tears well up as she tries to compose herself "Who would do such a thing? I... I... don't know how to go on! It seemed like yesterday when I first met him in that old run-down coastal tavern I used to work in. It was karaoke night, he was singing "Stayin' Alive," and I just fell for him then. We had a few drinks, maybe a few more then a few, it's all a bit blurry at that point, but I let him take me home. It's there I learned why they called him "Pinman," and what a night we had! It was like finding a needle in a haystack. And I found it! *sniff* Anyway, we had so much fun together, and I miss him already. *sniff*

"He was a great man, who was very knowledgeable of the seas. He taught our son almost everything he knew, and he is certainly ready and capable to take over the Nightingale. And I would appreciate it deeply if I were to receive the Amulet; it is, besides my fond memories, one of the few possessions I have left that remind me of him, not that I'll ever forget what he did for me."

The pain become too much, and she breaks down into a puddle of tears. "My dear *sniff* Pinman! Why did you have to leave me so soon! I can't...I just can't..."She collapses into a heap on the forlorn deck. It seems as if no one could do anything to console her.

Rowen, my brother!

Mother, Father, did I not tell you, Hippus do not belong on ships! Tali cannot speak to us out here, we are bereft. This is but an omen, this is but the beginning -- disaster is coming, and we are surely doomed! I blame the Lanun and the dwarves for this massacre. Who but a Lanun would know how to destroy a mast, or be so lacking in courage as to stoop to using poison? A pirate, that's who! We all know they only attack unarmed ships! And who but a dwarf would be so sneaky as to use a knife in the dark? The underground dwellers, hiding from the light. And I'm sure it was the Hammerfists' slut of a daughter who got my brother killed!

We Hippus are forthright; if we attack you, you will see us coming, and you will know exactly who is sending you to hell.

Come with me, parents; come with me, Silverriders. If Tali cannot reach us, we must reach Tali. We have no resource but our faith in such a time. If any among these pirates and skulkers be innocent, let them pray to their own gods for mercy: Tali will spare none of his!

Having worked himself into a bit of a state, the young man makes his way to the forecastle, glaring at everyone who crosses his path. Soon the silence of the ship is broken by the sounds of chanting and drumming, incomprehensible to all but the other Hippus on board. After a while his head pops up above the rail.

Let the wife have the amulet for all I care; it matters not to me!

The head disappears, and the chanting and drumming resume even louder than before.

Peace, son. Accusing blindly...ah, we all know where that leads. But we must find the killer of my son. He was a promising horsecarer, and now to be plunged into the sea... What fate could be worse for us? I will not rest until the killer is found, and the death of my son revenged. As for the captain, 'tis a shame, and leaves us adrift in this accursed wetness. I say the son be the captain, who has been trained for this job since birth. I certainly wouldn't trust myself at the wheel of one of these contraptions. Give me a solid horse, and I will work wonders, but wood and water, Bah! And the poor widow shares my pain, and for that, she may receive her husband's amulet...

OK. In order to survive and kill this saboteur, we must put all racial boundaries away. Let us think of each other as living being and living being, not Dwarf, Lanun, and Hippus. Though being on this ship sucks, we need to get on land alive. For our sake.

The first mate looks totally stricken. It's hard to tell what has affected him most - the loss of his captain, his friends of the Riversnake crew, or the mast. Or perhaps the fact that the bloody ship keeps moving without a mast and without his hands on the wheel.

I... I don't... but... how...?

Clenching and unclenching his fists, he stands staring off into the distance, as if to see the scorched lands of the Infernals on the horizon. But no land appears there to his eyes, and he turns instead to the crowd on the deck.

We... we should do something, of course, I mean, we must do something. That the ship will go to Kol.7 is not in question, and I will continue to serve him as I did his father - or better... Better! Since I seem to have failed late Pinman... As for the amulet, it would be interesting to know its significance... but his widow Backwards Logic should of course keep it.

Now, I need two strong men to go with me to check the wheel. If only we could turn it around...

What a tragedy! Who could have thought that so much could happen all in one day? The captain murdered, my daughter poisoned, the mast broken, and a whole family killed. This is almost too much to bear! And to top it all off, the ship is being mysteriously steered to the land of the Infernals! I can tell you that I will not be going to the land of the Infernals; no matter what it takes I will prevent the ship from getting there.

Anyway, I have no problem with Kol.7 inheriting his father's ship. Likewise, Pinman's wife, Backwards Logic can have the bloody amulet.

May 13, 2008, 11:55 AM
Ms. Izipo Wavewalker walks to the bridge all clad in black. Beneath the veil she's wearing, piercing blue eyes can be seen. After quickly scanning the crowd, she fixes them on the new Captain and his mother who are standing close together.

I present you with my sincere condolence in these difficult times. If you need anything, even a compassionate ear, do not hesitate a minute.
It is most natural that you Kol.7 should be the new captain and that the deceased's wife receives the amulet as a keepsake.
I have a question, though. If you are the Captain of this ship, who is steering it ?

Turning to face the other families, she also pays her respects in turn to the Hammerfists and Silverriders.

Once finished she slowly goes back towards her husband, while putting back the veil in place and discreetly wiping a tear from her face.

Ms. Stuck in Pi Silver-Rider suddenly realizes who dies. Her eyes open and close, and she drops to her knees.

"My goodness gracious! My poor son has fled this life! May he be blessed by the stars and Tali. But even now, forces move against us, and we must unite together, or die seperately."

She stands back up, walks about the ship, and proceeds to lose her breakfast over the side. She then walks down to a nearby bench and sits.

Silently grieve! Does no one here have any brains? These deaths were no accidental tragedies, they were deliberate murder, committed by one or more of the people on this very ship! The captain's son emerges from a nearby cabin. He is a little over 6" tall and slimly built. His hair brown and at about shoulder length. His usually piercing green eyes look tired now. He may have been crying, although it is difficult to tell. In his hand he clutches a half empty bottle of Rum.

If a Lanun wanted to kill a man aboard his ship he'd throw 'im to the sharks not poison him. I think you's lot with no real idea about the situation should just keep stumped. Ye' don't know us. To you we're just a bunch of low-life pirates. But we're not! Its men like that who give's the Lanun a bad name. I will not have your lies spread aboard my ship! Regret I that such misfortune has fallen on this family. That we were stupid enough to trust our lives to this hastily assembled collection of floating driftwood. What sort of shoddy craftsmanship is that a mast can be destroyed so easily. This craft was clearly not built by skilled dwarven hands, no.

Grieve we must, but now is not the time. The time has come to stir this pot of evil thoughts and deeds and observe what morsels rise from the bottom of the kettle.

Midday 1

The morning passed by quickly, as pangs of grief began effecting most of those traveling aboard the Nightingale. However, that seemed to be all they shared, as signs of racial tension began to appear among the survivors almost immediately after the shock of the morning's events started to wear off. Hippus "mercenaries" regarded the "midget" Dwarves with suspicion and vice versa, while all threw challenges at the Lanun "pirates". None of these newly proclaimed orators had any evidence, so all accusations were left rather vague, although the arsenal of names employed was quite varied and quite colorful.

Still, the newly elected Captain, Kol.7, was quick to try and stifle the tension and near open warfare on the ship, indicating that he would be sure to be rid of the passengers at the soonest moment. That only managed to create an even more hostile environment, and the tension still continues. At the same time, the grieving Backwards Logic was rewarded with the only known artifact left behind by Captain Pinman, a Silver Amulet with unidentified blood on it, as well as the engraving "Nightingale".

Even with this exciting and memorable morning, few managed to forget that the ship was still moving further and further towards certain oblivion....

My fellow Hippus, I am sorely disappointed in you. You all counsel to "get along" with the Lanun and the dwarves. But use your Tali-given logic on our problem. There is an evil on this ship, perhaps even three separate evils. It, or they, cannot be one of us: I will not countenance that idea. Who does that leave?

However, neither will I accuse thomas.berubeg. He, among few others, seems to have a grasp of the true scope of our danger here, and he does not hide behind false platitudes, but instead forthrightly speaks his mind. I admire that, even if he is a dwarf. He does not strike me as the type to hide in the shadows.

Instead, for now I will accuse zyxcvbnm Wavewalker, who has been nowhere but hiding in shadows ever since the evil occurred. He should come out of hiding and speak if he wishes me to change my mind.

It's the beards, no one can tell what gender dwarves are... It seems to me that a man and a dwarf were found to be lovers, which would offend the race mongers among us. This would be most prevalently thomas.berubeg, or Renata, using this logic that would make one or both of them the poisoners. Evening 1

The orange brilliance of dusk had begun to appear over the Nightingale even as heated accusations continued to get thrown about. Afternoon aboard the Nightingale had brought additional racially based flare ups, and the darkening skies had not yet cooled down flaming tempers on the deck.

Still, the day’s victim, thomas. berubeg Hammerfist had been selected, and the necessity of sleep forced the reluctant passengers to fulfill their terrible obligation. The proud Dwarf was frog marched onto the deck, with the screaming protests of his mother resonating behind him, where he was forced onto a newly constructed plank facing the open waters below. There the Captain Kol.7 pointed to the sharks waiting in the water, and asked if the unfortunate Dwarf had any last words.

Rather than speak, the Dwarf chose to sing, if that word can be used to describe his voice, which emitted a horrible screeching sound from his mouth that caused everyone in the vicinity to run away and cover their ears. The sound even managed to match the sad song of the Nightingale in intensity, which had not stopped after the morning’s events.

Thomas. berubeg’s ploy had succeeded, as nobody was brave enough to draw close enough to him to throw him over the side. Suddenly, the singing dwarf had a split second lapse, but it was enough. An unidentified sailor took the opening and punched the condemned Dwarf into the shark infested waters. The screeching that had resumed with his fall abruptly cut off, and only the sad song of the Nightingale continued in the air. Later analysis of the water would draw the following conclusion:

The Apprentice was innocent.

The remaining survivors trooped off towards their beds, accompanied only by the sad ballad of the Nightingale. Somehow, a new piece of information had come into each of their minds simultaneously. The maps analyzed that morning gave them only 9 days left before reaching the land of the Infernals, a land in which they would surely die.

Morning 2

The trauma of the previous day behind them, the shipmates awoke to a brand new day with newfound hope. The Song of the Nightingale had ended their sleep were the dead captain could not, and the day seemed brighter somehow than the last. After all, they had survived the night, although one member short from last night’s execution. Perhaps the day would bring good news.

When the trapped passengers and crew went out on the deck however, pangs of fear began to strike at them all. The captain, Kol.7, was missing! There was a stampede of concerned men towards his cabin, with all frightened of what they would find there. Fortunately, to everybody’s surprise and relief, the cabin was empty, and there was no blood on the floor.

Still, all wondered where he could be, and their search led them to his mother, Backwards logic’s, room. The door was ajar, and the sound of weeping could be heard inside. One brave soul opened the door to discover the following:

The Widow, Backwards Logic, was dead and an innocent.

Kol.7 was found weeping over his mother’s bloody corpse, with the tattered remains of her head in his hands. It appeared that Pinman’s wife had joined him in death just a day after his murder. Unlike Pinman however, her death was not gentle, and she appeared to have been ripped apart with little restraint. Lying next to the captain’s mother was the silver amulet she was awarded yesterday, with several new bloodstains on it. However, the greatest surprise was the discovery of a Knife in what appeared to have been Backward Logic’s former hand, with another engraving of Nightingale on it. Nobody knew where a kind woman like the captain’s wife could have acquired such a weapon, or the more frightening question of what she intended to use it for.

With these sobering thoughts in mind, the survivors drew the weeping captain away and began to prepare for the day’s round of voting, with the slow song of the Nightingale accompanying them.

The day will last for 48 hours, with the midday post coming in 24.
Accusations should be in Black.

Just out of curiosity, who else has a weapon? My mother had this knife which I found quite unlikely. It was certainly nothing I ever heard about.

I think it is more likely fo innocents to start with weapons then werewolves, afterall they don't need a strength boost b/c werewolves are generally above average-ly strong. "Have you considered that we do not face wolves, but rather infernals? We head to their land, and it makes perfect sense..."

Catharsis Oceandweller is bored out of her mind. This system of accusations only rarely led to violence... what's the point of that? If it were up to her, she'd throw everyone off the ship, including herself. That's a sure-fire way to kill all the wolves.

Having spent the first day below deck, avoiding the whole process, she has finally been persuaded to join the others.

Well, LightFang always had a weapon: his fists. They could deal some damage. He's innocent, so that defies gandhi's theory.

We know Kol.7 is most likely innocent.

So... gandhi rules is the most plausible theory so far.

Oh don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that LF is definately innocent, only that there is no evidence that he is guilty either. However, it is upseting that the man trusted to protect my familly has now failed to do so twice in two days. I expect there is a valid reason for this though, we cannot jump to conclusions here.

Midday 2

The survivors seemed to have overcome their grief by noon of the second day, and certainly got more comfortable with the idea of sentencing a person to death. Unlike the previous day, the item and execution votes were dealt with together, and although there was hesitation based on the lack of evidence, it seemed to be somewhat less than yesterday’s boycott of the vote.

For lunch, perhaps trying to curry some favor, the current vote leader ghandi rules managed to catch some fish for everybody to eat. When asked how the Hippus woman had acquired such a strange skill, the Plainsrider shrugged it off to “natural talent’.

In contrast to this surprising attempt at productivity, and a rare bout of hysteria aboard the ship, one of the sailors in charge of weather pointed out that the sky seemed to be acquiring a reddish tinge around the ship. Nobody else admitted to noticing anything, but all swore to keep an eye on the heavens, although privately laughing the matetr off.

All around them the Song of the Nightingale continues, but even as early as this second day, it is already being totally ignored.

LightFang Riverking painfully, slowly, calls for attention, standing on a barrel, until the masses quiet down and he can begin his recollection.

I don't have a weapon because the captain was never supposed to be in great danger.

I was just his servant for many years, grateful because the captain had lifted me from poverty and into his graces. One day, he confided in me a great plan of his: he would scrape together enough money to get a new crew, and with this new crew acquire wealth, and with this make the Nightingale a great ship again.

The bodyguard job, that was all symbolic. I was supposed to be the man behind it, to help him achieve glory. That's what it meant. I was going to protect him from bad luck and circumstance.

Never was I supposed to be in this position. Never were strange beings supposed to strike this ship. Think about it: what are the odds? We were supposed to prosper together, and now he is dead. Now his wife, whom I had sworn to protect, is dead too, and I can do nothing.

Kol.7, I swear to you, I want to see you alive.

It's just that, the only weapon I have is my fists. I have strength because of my background in the slums, but that's about it. I lack true bodyguard training.

I'm sorry.

"And it's ridiculous that you first accuse the bodyguard of failing to do his job, and then you insist that his 'fists are enough.' If he needs to do a better job, he needs his weapon!"

"Lanun, and Hippus, all crazy-minded, can't think properly. Honestly..."

I know that LF doesn't have any proof of innocence either, but if protection is his job, then it makes more sense to give Lightfang the knife. So much bickering, so much anger. Don't anyone realize where this ship is headed? Ah, would that I could turn it around...

I also doubt I can turn that ugly bandwagon around, I believe the charges brought against the plainswoman are very weak indeed. I repeat what I've said before, I find it most unlikely that someone would stick their neck out in that fashion if they are innocent. You are all jumping on the outspoken, and the ones who are the real danger stay in the shadows and bide their time. I would support gandhi rules, but that would bring little new to the situation, and might risk putting another innocent to death instead. So instead I will again cast my vote for Tolis Ironfist. As evening approached, the survivors resigned themselves to the death of ghandi rules, even though some of her overzealous supporters attempted to save her even after the deadline.

Rather than face the terror of the mob and perhaps the sharks as well, ghandi rules chose to use one of his fishing nets to hang himself in his cabin. As they left feeling sickened all of the survivors knew that:

Morning 3

The next morning brought a series of unpleasant surprises to the Nightingale. When the remaining survivors came up on deck, they were hit by what was undoubtedly the greatest shock of their lives- the sky had turned red! It took at least a minute of watching the spectacular red dawn for anybody to come out of their shock, and it was indeed a slow process. However, it was impossible not to get a resistance to impossibilities on this journey, and many were building up a resistance to surprise. Soon nothing would shock them.

It seemed like the Song of the Nightingale had grown louder somehow over the course of the previous night. As if great spectacular things had happened somewhere, although few believed that these things could be good. Especially after what was found in the mess hall, or more aptly, which person was found in the mess hall. A quick cursory analysis netted the following conclusion:

The Blacksmith, Hitti- Litti, was dead and an innocent.

The great mystery was not what had happened to the poor dwarf, as the remains of his body looked as if they had been violently torn to pieces in the same manner as Backwards Logic’s limbs and torso had been. No, most of the survivors believed that the great terror, the werewolf, was behind the attacks. The great question was the location of the body.

It appeared that the blacksmith had not gone to bed last night. Rather, he had taken a secret Forge to the mess, and spent the entire night working on The First Dagger . Only at the end of his work had he been interrupted by the werewolves looking for their late dinner.

Of course, Frozen in Ice had been dealt her second trauma in 3 days that morning, and the revelation seemed to have rendered her comatose. The poor soul was lain down on her bed, with no friends or family left, too tired to even weep. Many would later write up her life in a book known as The Greater Sorrow, but that is a tale for another day.

At the same time, the revelation of the forge had caused the creation of several new lobby groups, who all seemed to think that the bloody thing posed some sort of fire risk. With all the other worries aboard the ship, these fools were laughed off as the song of the Nightingale softly continued to play.

This day shall last 48 hours with the Midday Post coming in 24.

Votes for the Forge should be in Red.
Votes for the First Dagger should be in orange.

I must insist. The First Dagger should be mine. I have a job to do. I need to protect Kol.7. Please, don't get in the way. The bodyguard's tired eyes flash with streaks of sudden willpower, as if he has some energy stored away under his tired, mourning exterior.

Let the dagger go to Lightfang. Surely he will find a use for it.

Frozen In Ice
May 18, 2008, 08:59 PM
After finally finding the energy to get out of bed, Frozen in Ice Hammerfist slowly headed up on deck, but there was almost no life in her eyes. She seemed almost completely unattached from the world, and she showed no emotion, until she began the following speech.

Both my husband and my son killed! How I am supposed to carry this burden of loss now that I have no surviving family? Just please, give me the forge; it will give me something to remember my husband by, and I may be able to make things of use with it.

At this point she paused for a moment and fury seemed to seep into her face, and she grew very tense before continuing.

And speaking of my husband I think I know who killed him! It is the that dirty traitor Kol 7! Last evening he came around to my quarters asking if I knew anyone that could fix something for him and I told him my husband the blacksmith might be able to. And what do you know, Hitti-Litti is found dead the next morning!

Also, remember last morning, when Backwards Logic was found dead in her cabin? When everyone else found her, Kol 7 was already there supposedly weeping in grief. As it turns out, he was the first one to be there because he committed the murder! He was the one that so mercilessly ripped her apart. I say we hang the new captain for what he is: a traitor that murders his own family!

Tasslehoff

All right. Frozen In Ice, take the forge and craft us a solution to this mess.

It seems prudent for LightFang to take the dagger, as no one else seems better suited to the weapon. Also, Frozen in Ice should certainly take the forge. I do not know why LightFang would desire a dagger when he admits he hasn't the knowledge to use it properly. I am only certain I have no use for it myself.

Midday 3

The shadow of the day, the blazing red dawn, went pretty much ignored up until lunch. A later writer would muse that perhaps this and other strange happenings were ignored because all those who saw them feared for their sanity. Seeing as those aboard the Nightingale already feared for their sanity in the face of so much death, that explanation could certainly have some merit.

In any event, the voting commenced as expected and at noon both item votes seemed fairly sewn up. Lightfang led by a comfortable margin to receive The First Dagger, in yet another situation where an item was voted based on the sympathy factor. The same can be said of The Forge, due to be handed over to Frozen in Ice, who seemed to recover rather quickly after she heard of the items to be allocated.

The lynch vote however, was far from over. On the beautiful third day of the crisis, there seemed to be multiple lucky contenders to die that night. Only further heated argument, accompanied by the sad Song of the Nightingale, another ignored element, would satisfy the question of who was to die.

Then the next day, I was shocked by my father's death and when I woke up my first thought was to check on my familly to see if they were alright. Then I found my mother dead in her room.

(OOC: Finally, it is a common game tactic to get rid of the inactive players at the beginning of the game when you don't know who else to hang. The first few hangings are always against random people so why not take out a few people who aren't contributing anything to the game? Niklas was clearly just voting to wake a few people up.)

Yes it's true, I have in my possession a book of necromancy, it is of no use denying it.

But have you seen dead people walking lately ? Hmm, thought so. And yet, dead people we have had aplenty.

I my heart and soul I am a healer, but in the course of my life sometimes I wasn't strong enough and I was helpless to thwart death. People that were under my care died, this was too much of a burden on me. Many years I have been searching to better my healing techniques, but still people died.
Not long ago, I found a book. Some of you can call it of the dark arts, I merely saw it as a way to finally bring back life where all else had failed.
But bringing back someone to life is hard, very hard. Especially when you wish to avoid being tainted. This is why I'm still studying it, and have yet to perform the ritual.

You call it a book of necromancy, I call it a book of life.

This is troubling news. I can't say that I'm happy to hear about your necromancy practice, dear wife, but I also can't say I would like to see you as shark bait for it. We're in very dire straits here, we're headed for a place most of us wouldn't want to be within a thousand miles from, and every single day we move closer to it. My wife may be a necromancer, and may have been playing with forces better left alone, but does that make her a killer? Did she murder the Captain, or his wife, or the Blacksmith? I'm afraid if we all jump on the chance to kill someone who isn't quite like us, it will only let the real monsters have their way longer. And that's not even considering the off chance that my wife actually can resurrect someone. I support Izipo, for better or worse.

Rheinmetall, I forgive you, and hope you will forgive me in turn.

Well, thank you Rheinmetall, and thank you too my dear, I know I have been away from you for too long.
I nearly had forgotten how good a husband you were.

Slowly, Izipo takes out from beneath her robe a foreboding heavy book. A feeling of evil emanates from it and the silence makes itself deeper still. Even the song of Nightingale seems to subdue. With a longing last look, she theatrically let it fall on the bridge.

Here, if that is the thing that is standing between you and me, I'll gladly let it go. If someone wants it, help yourself, but be careful with it.
If noone wants it, maybe it will be better if it rests on the bottom of the ocean, although I cannot shake the feeling that we might still need it.

She then tentatively takes a step over the book, toward her husband, a thin smile forming on her red lips, eyes locked in those of his love.

Catharsis Oceandweller is looking particularly lucid this evening. Little wonder: she thrives on conflict, and there's a lot of it about at the moment. While she would, of course, much rather be hurling people over the side, any medium is preferable to none: if words are required, words will (however falteringly) be offered.

{OOC: Yes, I realize your vote is now different, I'm just refuting your argument}

First, I have no ill will against you whatsoever, Captain. I am as certain as possible, under the circumstances, that you are innocent.

As for Niklas, my vote stems from his unprovoked attack on my daughter. {OOC: Yes, I understand weeding out the inactive is common early, but Tolis wasn't inactive.} Niklas also voted on the reasoning that there was weak evidence only against ghandi, yet he gave no evidence against my daughter. Evening 3

Brisingamen Plainsrider had always been a simple man. A Hippus Horse Breeder who had no false airs about him, he was a man of honor and integrity throughout his entire life. Some would say that he had learned these traits during his time among the horses, who know nothing of deceit and lies.

When it was decided for him to die, the man took a short moment to say a small goodbye to his son Renata, and then walked right off the ship into the water. He did this with no grand spectacle, and in fact nobody witnessed his death. It was only later after the entire ship was searched for him that his body was discovered floating peacefully in the water. He had drowned. The usual analysis of his remains netted what seemed to be becoming a trend:

The Horse Breeder, Brisingamen, was innocent.
Tears would have flowed from most reasonable men at the death of this total innocent. He was perhaps the greatest man aboard the Nightingale during that fateful voyage to doom. Indeed tears did flow, as all of the innocents cried freely into their hands. They did not notice those who remained silent, and did not cry. The song of the Nightingale seemed to beat with them at that moment, the murderers of Hitti- Litti and Backwards Logic.

It was only later that the sad and weary souls trooped off to bed accompanied by the ever constant song of the Nightingale.

The following is an excerpt from “The Greater Sorrow” a short history written about the song of the Nightingale:

It was on the third night that the werewolves seemed to assume control of the situation. Having seen 5 innocents killed, their power seemed unmatched. The horsemen of the apocalypse stood smiling in that frozen moment where the innocents wept at the death of Brisingamen, as no innocents would notice them with their heads buried deeply in their hands. Hope for the innocents seemed to die that day, although perhaps I should not be the one to speak of it.

It was written by Captain Pinman two years after the events of the Nightingale.

Morning 4

After the traumatic events of last night, it came as no surprise to anybody that when they came up on deck, beneath the fiery red sky, they numbered one short. With terrible sighs, the survivors went about their daily ritual to discover the body.

He was discovered in his room, with his pound of Gold next to him. Apparently the werewolves had intruded smack in the middle of his nightly ritual of counting his earnings. This preoccupation with material wealth seemed somewhat disturbing during this time of crisis, and no doubt had he been left alive he may have done some damage. Still, despite this speculation, one thing could not be doubted:

The Shopkeeper, Charles Li, was innocent.
With the morning’s victim out of the way, the survivors geared up for today’s round of execution voting while being serenaded onwards by the Song of the Nightingale. That morning’s one excitement appeared to be the gold discovered with the shopkeeper’s body. It had to be put somewhere- so why not vote for it as well?

Still, there were worried looks among the survivors- those who remembered that there were only 7 nights left until the ship reached the burning hell that was the land of the Infernals. Perhaps salvation would come sooner than expected.

Accusations should be in Black.
Supports should be in Green.
Votes for the Gold should be in Gold.

Midday 4

Those who were there said that it could not be natural. After all, the fourth day had started out as a typical morning, in fact quieter than most. Sure, Charles Li had died, but the voting had been slow, and the deck quiet without mad orations made by the accused.

So when it did come, it came out of the blue, or perhaps red. The survivors were lounging out on the Nightingale’s deck, trying to see something hidden in their shipmates faces when it came. Suddenly, out on the horizon, the blood red sky started to turn to the black of night as all watched on in horror. Accompanying this shadow of the day, was the seaman’s eternal enemy- storm clouds.

The clouds came on slowly, as the blackness of the storm swept away the sunlight amongst the red sky. It came onward with the terrifying sounds of thunder and lightning in its midst. Powerful wind gusts that seared through the survivors aboard the deck, and drew hats and other articles of clothing away into the darkness. Even sheets of hail and rain that pelted down from the sky, bruising more than one survivor.

Still it was the lightning that scared the Nightingalers the most. The Lanun might have been somewhat used to it, and more than one of them tried to calm down those who became hysterical. Unfortunately, neither Dwarf nor Hippus was used to being stranded on a boat in the midst of a storm of terrifying electricity and their efforts were for naught. Nobody could calm the panicked passengers down.

Then minutes started to pass, and while the thunder screamed overhead, and the lightning illuminated the darkness with its terrible power, the ship had not been harmed excepting a few bruises and some lost hats. So it was understandable that when what could be perceived as the possible beginning of the end to everybody’s lives occurred, many were not ready for it. In fact nobody was ready for it.

The Nightingale after all, despite Pinman’s boosts that it was the greatest ship of the sea, was made of wood, and as everybody knows, wood has a very obvious fault. That thought seemed to strike at everybody’s mind in that moment, when the greatest impossibility of all seemed to happen. An impossibility that seemed to stop time and caused Captain Kol to scream “abandon ship”. Those were words that nobody thought he would ever say because although the Nightingale does have a lifeboat, it was old and had many holes in it. The boat was not expected to last long on the open ocean.

Still, Captain Kol did utter those words because of one simple fact. Although it seemed impossible, lightning had struck the Nightingale.

A once proud ship was burning, but the song of the Nightingale continued on with its survivors. They had all decided to obey the captain, and ran for the small boat that didn’t seem to have much life left in it, still staring at the spectacle of the brilliant blaze aboard their former home.

The following is an excerpt from “The Greater Sorrow” written by Captain Pinman.

And that moment was a climactic one, and one that had far-reaching consequences. Indeed it was only that lightning which led directly to my first appearance.

What's this? Some people really seem to have it in for me, I don't suppose it's surprising when I stuck my neck out and called some people out in the beginning of this madness. But these accusations are rather silly, and seem like the mark of another bandwagon.

Yes, I voted for Tolis, twice even. And she returned the favor too. But to say I'm responsible for her father's death just because I dislike his daughter, well, farfetched to say the least. And to think I would carry grudges in a situation like this is rather silly.

Yes, I cast the first vote against Brisingamen. I regret his death and my role in it, but he made himself my target with his continued ire towards my wife, in a situation where I desperately needed a target, to save my wife and myself. But what followed was definitely not my doing. I can only surmise that many were desperate for a target, not wanting to cast a first vote, and I conveniently provided one. The previous suggested targets - my wife, myself and our captain - weren't really reasonable and many must have known that. The intensity of that bandwagon would almost be amusing, if it wasn't for the tragedy it caused. But if you seriously think I am a wolf, and able to control that many votes, with that intensity, you are truly out of your minds.

I cast the first stone, for which I am not proud. But it is in the pack that you should be looking for those trying to hide. I dared stick my neck out, as I have again and again. The mark of a wolf? No, I'm not a werewolf, and I will continue to stand for my opinions, loud and clear.

Rheinmetall hesitantly leaves the ship behind. He doesn't say anything during the whole time. Just keeps staring at the water. Finally he looks at the others arguing.

"Hehehehe! Haaahaahahaahhaha! Wolves. A wolf trying to fight in a rickety boat like this could topple the whole thing."

"You keep fighting among each other. Don't you see it's pointless. Let us float here for a couple of days and all this becomes meaningless. I fail to see enemy here. Even if I think some of you are, there's a high chance you are not. My own family, other dwarves, and you accursed horse people."

"And stop talking about those beasts, or I shall start telling you about caves and mighty cities underground. Metallurgy and other interests of mine. I don't care about horses!"

IC : Holding her son by the hand, Izipo climbs down to the ship. A lot can be said about her son, after having been mute for the past 4 days, his appearance has now changed dramatically. Rapidly checking if her daughter and husband are also in the lifeboat, she then takes a long look at her son.

Well, I'm glad you're finally among us my son, I'm sorry that it took a burning ship to wake you up, but higher beings move in mysterious ways, as they say.

And what's this ? My husband accused because he tried to save me ? This is madness. I agree that the events of last night were nearly unbelievable, but is this reason enough to accuse him ? As he said, do you really think he has everyone under control ? No, I can vouch for my husband Niklas' innocence. The evil doers are among those that voted AFTER him.

{OOC: Hello again, Ronin!}

alright. alright. those of you who make support votes, you are weak. i don't want to demean myself by speaking to you.

but those of you who accuse tasslehoff: what exactly are you accusing him of? yeah, he accused niklas. but so did a lot of people. should we kill them all? is dislike of niklas a calling-card of a wolf?

the way i see it, niklas has done more wolfy stuff today than tasslehoff has in a week. of course he manipulated the vote. you don't have to stare too hard to figure that out. and every time he is accused, he answers with lots of flowery talky-talky, but no evidence.

chuck 'im over the side! and then chuck kol.7, too.

Well at least my daughter is completely crazy one top of this! *Saying this the exasperated mother bodily hauls her mad daughter onto the boat, calling for her family to join her* Try not to get hit by falling flaming sails!

i'm sure i don't know who you are, lady.

''Well, look on the bright side everyone! No werewolf's gonna be able to make a kill now without wakin' the lot o' us up, then all we gotta do is grab him and chuck him overboard :D.''

''I'd be very intested to see this so called evidence against niklas because so far I see and grand total of *nothing*. Is there even any evidence? you can't overturn what has already been overturned. in the morning, the main accusation of the ship was clear - niklas would die. but i made a prediction, and i'm sure a lot of others did too, and it came true: lots of quick-fire votes for tasslehoff and support votes for niklas, right at the end of the day when they can't be defended against. that's low. even i think that's low.

and as a matter of fact, even if you count this as an 'overturn', this is the first one that I have attempted. other two (i'm told it's less than four and more than one) days i've been active, i've voted for kol.7 both times, neither time getting anywhere near a majority.

although ruling the ship would be nice. there's very little elbow room in here

Pretty sure about Tasslehoff, Kol.7? The only ones I see voting against him are those who are strongly linked to Niklas himself -- what does that say about the objectivity of the non-existent evidence? At least the accusations against Niklas have more than one source.

I will take a cue from Catharsis and offer some of Niklas' own words as food for thought.

A beautiful cloak of protection he threw over thomas.berubeg and myself, back on the first day of this crisis. Am I the only one to notice that it also served to cover him? And he repeated the comment, just in case anyone had forgotten the first time, in accusing as inactive a girl, Tolis, who actually wasn't. Look, too, at the wolf deaths since Backwards Logic: Hitti-Litti, a man who opened his mouth once the first day and never again; and Charles Li, someone who announced his intention to hide out in his cabin on day two and never come out! (OOC translation of the last part -- after reading qoou's mysterious comment about zxcvbnm, I went and checked out the NES forum: Charles Li has a comment in the top sticky post there saying he won't be on the internet again for weeks. I'm not really a fan of meta-gaming like that and wouldn't have sought out that information on my own, but I can't un-see it.) Who among us can honestly say that those deaths do not fit Niklas' stated biases to a T?

Niklas, I have no personal grudge against you. But I can't escape the evidence of my own eyes. That evidence says you are a wolf, probably their leader. We survivors can do ourselves no better service than to eliminate you.

(OOC: Stuck in Pi, Pinman mentioned wolves in one of his morning or evening posts a day or two ago. We probably do have Ashen Veil -- what else could those marks in Pinman's cabin have been? -- but we also have wolves.)

Evening 4

The storm’s monstrous winds tore at the boat as the tired survivors tried to complete the day’s round of voting. Although the process had been disrupted, it finally appeared that Niklas Wavewalker had been elected to die. It was decided that pushing him over the side of the lifeboat was the best method, as there was no way that he could survive the storm's ferocity in the water.

Although uneasy, the survivors led the struggling Niklas over to the edge of the boat, and in a one quick shove pushed him over the side. He appeared to be struggling to stay afloat in the midst of the vicious waves when he was last seen. His death was certainly inevitable in those conditions.

It was then that the raging storm seemed to intensify for an instant, as if guided by some foreign power. A strong wind gust came in from the east and tipped over the small lifeboat, tossing everybody into the water.

The Nightingalers all fought to stay afloat in the middle of the storm as the winds kept coming guiding them all slowly eastward, faster than the boat ever could of. Unfortunately, bit by bit all of the survivors seemed to weaken against the terrible forces of the ocean, the brutal waves and powerful currents, and even as they were carried by strong wind gusts to an unknown destination, blackness in the form of unconsciousness came to all. To many, it seemed like the end of their lives.

Some higher power however, had other plans for them despite the logical thought that when one is tossed into the ocean during a terrific storm one cannot survive. For by some incredible miracle all of the Nightingalers awoke to find themselves lying on the hot sand of an island. Somehow the wind must have carried them there unconscious amidst the waves. As they looked towards the still red sky they saw that the storm seemed to be clearing. Perhaps its unknown purpose had been fulfilled.

The island was fairly standard in its aesthetics, although in fact fairly small. It had a long sandy coastline, at the bottom of a series of hills leading to high cliffs. In the far distance, the small outlines of a dark forest could be seen.

Still, the island seemed to have properties beyond the norm, as two mysterious sights could be beheld from the rocky shore. One was Niklas Wavewalker, who had survived the attempt to kill him, waking up on the shore with the rest of them. The other sight was cause for far more concern.

Standing at the top of the hilly shoreline stood a male figure. In the first instant, many thought that they were dead and had fallen into heaven. Yet the dead man was no apparition, and nobody had died in the crash. No, what they saw before them was very real indeed.

Captain Pinman was truly standing in front of them, with no expression on his face. He had none of the blood on him that had been present in his cabin aboard the Nightingale and he seemed like he wasn’t harmed at all.

Before the survivors could react, the dead man began walking towards them. Surveying them with his poker face, he nodded towards his son and sat down on a nearby rock. As his appearance had paralyzed all of the Nightingalers, it fell to him to speak the first words.

“You seem to have gone through a terrible couple of days haven’t you?” said Pinman in a rather mild tone.

Nobody could bring themselves to respond normally to this absurdity, but somebody managed to blurt out “Your dead!”

“Not quite I fear, it takes more than a knife through the heart to take out one of us. I still reside… somewhere, but I have come to talk to you of other things.”

Although the captain’s words were strange, the remaining shipwreckees settled down on the sand to listen to his tale.

“I don’t have a lot of time, so I will say what I have to as quickly as possible. Amongst you there resides a certain…item. I’m afraid that for reasons beyond your understanding, the Infernals are being drawn to that item even as we speak. If you want to survive, destroy it to stop them from landing on this very beach.”

“How do you know any of this!” shouted a confused member of Pinman’s audience.

Sighing slightly, with his voice revealing a hint of evil madness, Pinman gave his terrible reply. “Because I did it you idiot, and if that bloody fool hadn’t intervened, you’d all be dead by now. If you want to live, destroy my orb, you must destroy the Nightingale.”

As the shocked survivors looked on, the former captain's body started to flicker, but he was able to get through a few more desperate words spoken in shrieks.

“You have six days! Destroy the Orb or die! It has the same weaknesses as a wolf!"

"DESTROY THE NIGHTINGALE!”

With that final note, Pinman vanished into thin air, leaving behind a bunch of bewildered people, forced to reevaluate their opinions of him.

It was at that instant that the former Nightingalers realized something absurd. The song of the Nightingale was still with them, echoing freely on this desolate rock that threatened to become their tomb.

Morning 5

A fresh cool island breeze awoke the remaining Nightingalers the next morning. No signs of the previous day's storm were in evidence, and the natural features of the island appeared quite calm, even if its new inhabitants were far from it.

Pinman's words the previous night had unsettled everybody, and led to the impression that their former Captain was far from the innocent they had all believed him to be. In fact, many people were slowly coming to the realization that he may have been the cause of their current misfortune.

One person however, no longer needed to be concerned with such things. He had been found a short distance away from his makeshift tent, created the night before using wood from the island's forest, and his body looked peaceful, although somewhat torn to pieces. The loss of such a great man would have led to a time of great sorrow from his people in normal times, but as for now only the following facts seemed to concern anybody.

The Shaman, D'artagnan Silverrider, was dead and an innocent.

Indeed, the survivors seemed far more concerned with descifering the mystery of Captain Pinman's words the previous night. To that end, and with small protest from Kol.7 Riverking, it was suggested by Methos Oceandweller and StuckinPi Silverrider that his former possessions should be searched. These had been considered too trivial to vote on and were given to his son, the current captain.

Under the watchful eyes of the other castaways, the two browsed through various memorobilia that Pinman had left to his family. It was while searching through a large box that the captain had used to store his stuff that they discovered something. There was a large enclosed space between the area visible from the opened crate and the bottom. They felt inside for a few more moments before finally discovering the switch. That’s when Captain Pinman's secret was revealed at long last.

The crate's bottom opened spilling out several large volumes as well as assorted potions and some especially vile objects whose uses the survivors could only guess at. It was the volumes however that proved it. Including “The Top ten ways to be the world's greatest priest of the Ashen Veil" and "Evil for Dummies"; They ended a debate that had started only last night. Captain Pinman had been a member of the Ashen Veil.

"BOOM!" "BOOM!" "BOOM!"

Fire filled the air, as an explosion suddenly erupted from the crate containing old Pinny's possessions. Most of the survivors were able to duck away fast enough but a few were not so lucky. Both Stuck in Pi and Methos had been caught right next to the booby-trapped box and they could not possibly have reacted in time. When the smoke cleared the damage was horrific.

Stuck in Pi's right leg had been torn completely off by the blast, and Methos' left arm was bleeding profusely. They were quickly whisked away by several of the sailors, and it appeared that they would live, albeit scarred for life.

The shocking morning seemed to bode for an exciting day, and even the Song of the Nigthingale had a slightly elevated pitch. Important events were coming, it seemed to say.

Important events were coming.

It seems so.... The bastard! And now Lightfang I want to tell me your exact relationship with the former captain. You told me that the two of you were up to something before, at the time I assumed it was something petty and money-related, I knew my father was going through financial problems. However, now the truth has been unveiled, perhaps there is something more. If you do not feel comfortable speaking about it in front of these people then feel free to come to my tent in private. Until you are truthful with me though, I accuse Lightfang for being up to something evil with my dear father, I encourage others to vote for him also, to put the pressure on him until he admits the truth.

D'Artagnan59 had been going about telling people in private that there was hard evidence of Niklas' guilt. Now he is dead. I don't like such coincidences. Niklas is surely evil. To accuse anyone else today is nothing but a dangerous distraction. We don't have the time or the numbers to play games with mere suspicions.

Kol.7, I share your concerns about LightFang. But Pinman was your father. Any suspicion relating to him must surely apply to you as much as to LightFang. You are being disingenuous to suggest otherwise. I am not liking the wild swings between accusation and support that I am seeing from you with regards to him.
