View Full Version : Roosevelt 18 civs Prince and beyond...
Grinnenstadt May 18, 2008, 01:43 AM Have been trying my hand at Prince lately and won on the 18 civs map as China. I've played as America on this map, but never on Prince. The first time around, I got pwned. I successfully built the oracle for Metal Casting and built Colossus to keep my economy going as well as cheap forges for GE lightbulbing. Unfortunately I remained far behind the rest of the world in tech because my economy was being used to support a large army to counter Monty and barbs. I did get a line of cities (my first three) that effectively cut off Monty from the main continent. I took a long time to settle my way north, and by the time I started into tundra land, the French had already planted a colony. Beelined for Internet, but Asoka got it first, but didn't matter 'cause China won space race. :(
I am curious if other higher level players have played this particular map as America and the strategy as well as tactics ;) involved. Did you play with certain custom settings, such as no barbs. What American synergies were the most effective? How did you deal with Monty and other AIs. I've read some really great articles in the past that might be helpful, maybe you wrote them? :p
Thanks for your responces. :)
PutCashIn May 18, 2008, 02:16 AM Well I only play prince level dude, but I think if you move washington 1 square west, you get an iron in the bfc (and 2 coal, lol), so go for a forest chopped axe/sword rush on monty, then the northen continent is all yours!
(lately I have been playing Earth34, where there is also the Mayans and Sitting Bull to play with, plus Roosie is changed to Lincoln.)

Earth34? Where can I find this?
Belisar May 18, 2008, 03:28 AM Forget the tundra and the rockies.
The good land for America (after New England is settled and Monty is taken care of) on the world map is burried under the amazonas-jungle.
You need a lot of workers and a strategically placed FP but South America really gives you an insanly amount of leeve-powerd riverside grassland for both production and commerce.
world34 can be found in the scenario forum. I like it because after playing a lot of world18 domination games it's nice to play with alternative (and more) leaders. I usually mod it and take away the additional european civs as Europe is alredy cramped enough.

slobberinbear May 19, 2008, 06:32 PM On Earth 18, America, you can get some very nice city locations roughly in the areas occupied by Boston (two seafood), chicago (2 corn + marble), ottowa (fur + copper), denver (corn + gold) and new orleans (fish + lots of river). There are also two nice city spots in Canada just east of the Rockies with food and metal tiles.
I settle in place and get the seafood and deer worked, then get a settler off to the Chicago site. Two irrigated corn is incredible for whipping. I then like to settle the New Orleans and Denver sites to block Monty, who will go for the Canada sites if you let him. I will then backfill the Boston and Ottowa sites. With six good cities, you have more than enough to go to war once you learn Iron Working and Construction. Go with mixed swords, axes, and catapults. Don't bother with spears as there are no horses in the new world. And yes, you will need Catapults. Fighting fortified axemen in hilled, walled holy city capitals is not easy.
Monty's city sites are all worth keeping except the desert ones in far north/northwest Mexico. Monty's capital is a production powerhouse if you can feed it. Make sure to settle the California and Seattle locations too. The interior mountain sites are rich in minerals and stone but not well-suited for cities ... just get the resources with forts once your culture expands there. I would leave the tundra alone except I'd settle one city to get the whales. Cuba is worth settling but the rest of the islands are lackluster.
After that, assuming your economy is in order, REX South America hard. There's a fair chance Huayna will still be bottled up on the west coast with a handful of cities.

I've tried a strategy very similar...if done right, the game is won.
North America and most of South America entirely under your control...:D (and the amazon is a great place for cottage spam)
