View Full Version : Chaa Saaen
ShiroKobbure May 19, 2008, 02:29 AM This unit is based off the Thai movie Suriyothai.
The Chaa Saaen (ราชา แสนย์ ) means royal infantry in Thai, unlike most of the armies of South East Asia, Chaa Saaen have expensive armor from Portugal. So they are more protected than most infantry.

BadKharma May 19, 2008, 06:44 AM Very nice job, the only drawback I see is the dark coloring makes it difficult to discern allot of the details.

The Last Conformist May 19, 2008, 08:48 AM With Portuguese armour, I'm guessing this would be ca 16th century? :)
ShiroKobbure May 19, 2008, 09:16 AM Yes This unit is from 1500s-1700s
Blue Monkey May 19, 2008, 10:02 AM What characteristics make the armor Portuguese?
TopGun May 19, 2008, 11:11 AM This is a superb unit!
ShiroKobbure May 19, 2008, 11:22 AM What characteristics make the armor Portuguese?
Except the helmet, all of it is Portuguese. The breastplate, shoulder pads, and thigh covers are all European. I thought it was strange that Thai armor looked so European.
But in Suriyothai there is a quote that makes it all make sense. Suriyothai says they need to buy more guns and armor from the Portuguese.
Portuguese armor also influences Japanese nanban armor.
Willi_Tell May 19, 2008, 11:41 AM Thank you Shiro - I like this unit very well!
Just as proposal without obligation: :crazyeye:
- since this guy is wearing also a sword on his back, it would be amazing
seeing him using it (attack2 animation?)
- Since most of the guys' arming is Portuguese, are you planning to generate
a Portuguese (colonial) soldier by changing some elements like the helmet?

it would be too hard to make attack B use his sword, because he would have to put his spear down, then pull his sword and attack. And then I would have to change the victory, and death animation. But I do have an idea for a Thai swordsman.
At the moment I have no plan to make a Portuguese unit. sorry ^ ^;;
But you did remind me to make my Angola UU, that is a Kongonese warrior in Portuguese armor.
Chris85 May 19, 2008, 01:04 PM Beautiful! Great job, Shiro! :goodjob:
Quinzy May 19, 2008, 01:44 PM Lovely unit :D Very well modeled and animated!
Mithadan May 19, 2008, 03:33 PM Great unit for an underrepresented area of the globe!
againsttheflow May 19, 2008, 05:40 PM Wow, definately one of my favorites of yours. :goodjob:
Orthanc May 19, 2008, 05:56 PM ANimation is quite smooth, death might be just a touch slow, but it flows well, and I would rather see it go too slow than too fast (I think).
Nice work:goodjob:
Leaven May 19, 2008, 09:39 PM Wow, as with all your work, great quality. This unit may be from a very specific part of the world, but at civ scale I think it could pass for a lot of other countries too. Great work!
Micaelus May 19, 2008, 11:27 PM Very cool! I like it a lot...well done!

Goldflash May 20, 2008, 05:50 PM Well, technically, I think the movie was called the Rise of Surihothwhatever. I like the way he looks.
Ogedei_the_Mad May 23, 2008, 01:46 AM I think it was "The Legend of Suriyothai." I've only seen parts of it, but it's a very interesting and detailed movie (albeit quite long and possibly too detailed) if you like historical epics.
Ayutthaya was relatively cosmopolitan during Suriyothai's day due to the intense competition between Southeast Asian kingdoms and their increased attention towards maritime trade. Southeast Asians utilized Portuguese and Turkish mercenaries, European firearms and armor, Malay navigators and sailors, and Chinese doctors and merchants. Quite an interesting time period for us Asian history nerds. :)
Blue Monkey May 23, 2008, 03:20 AM Well, technically, I think the movie was called the Rise of Surihothwhatever.I think it was "The Legend of Suriyothai."IMDB has it listed as "Suriyothai", but shows the DVD art of the American version with the title "The Legend of Suriyothai". Sony Classics (the American distributor) has it listed as "The Legend of Suroyothai" on the official website. According to Wikipedia "When the film was released on August 12, 2001 in Thailand, it was entitled simply Suriyothai". I think we should get back to posting about Shirou's wonderful units.
odintheking May 25, 2008, 09:55 PM This dude looks f*ckin cool!
