View Full Version : How would you accomplish this save?
Branded Swine May 20, 2008, 12:24 PM Hi all!
I am new here and just thought I'd put up a save and see if anyone can give me some advise about the completion of this game I am currently on.
Here's the stats:
Roosevelt
Standard Hemispheres map
Marathon speed
normal settings for the rest.
I usually have difficulty after the save you can view as the rest of the civs just get ahead of me to far most of the time. (occasionally, though I win on this Nooble level).
Any suggestions here would be gretly appriciated!;)

So this is Noble Difficulty?
Edit: Okay, I played till about 600 BC.
First things first: Why on earth are you building the Colossus?! You have limited coast/ocean tiles, anyways. I know the jungle will force you to the coast, but I think its too much of an investment for a small return.
2) Machinery before Code of Laws? You won't be needing Macemen for a while, and Optics should come some time away.
As for gameplay: I built 4 Workers in Washington after I chopped a forest to accelerate the Colossus. The Farming Worker stopped, moved north to New York, and chopped a forest there. Then, he chopped a few more to build 3 Settlers. Settled Boston, Atlanta, and another city (Chicago?) to the north and west; Boston and Atlanta on the coast, Chicago west of New York, a tad squished. An Army of Workers chopped Jungle, built Cottages, Watermills, and Mines, and repeated the process. I got a Great Prophet out of Washington; founded Christianity with it, then spread it to my cities. Built 1 Trireme and 1 Galley, loaded the Galley with Christian Missionaries, and set out to find Egypt. I also opened borders with Hammurabi and Hatshepsut. Babylon founded Confucianism, which spread quickly in the Civilization. I managed to convert Hatty to Christianity. We're Friendly, but Hammurabi's pissed because he caught my Spies causing trouble (thrice, I think), and I had a heathen religion. The last straw came when the Religious Marriage event between our empires came up. I selected the third option, and he declared war on me. I whipped some Swords, Axes, and Catapults and razed two Size 1 cities.
To improve: build more Workers, focus on tech path (Alphabet, Code of Laws, etc are priorities; Optics is not), and only build necessary Wonders.
pigswill May 20, 2008, 04:30 PM Time to expand. You've got enough wonders for now. Research CoL, build cities, build granaries and courthouses.

Yes.:)
I have yet to master this level.

OK.
1) You've played till 600 BC? You must have started the begining.
point: I needed some cash as my economy was toasted already so I got Collosus for a quick fix that builds later in the game when I will have lots of coastal cities hopefully(this is my idea anyways).
2) Point: I wanted to get rid of that obnoxious guy to the north before he could get to good a grip on landmass grab. He also was going for Rock Throwers, and I did not want him to have them before I could easily cream him. (I just wanted him to have enough cities that I could take and hold properly without costing me the game in the same equation). So I thought I would need machinery but did not get the needed Crossbowmen, guess you also need another tech so that was a waste there...
3) I have been building Courthouses already so I have COL already. or did I miss something? Wrong Save?? I will have to look again later tonight after work and post on that tomorrow.
4) I agree that I need workers now since I have so many cities from Hamursnoby that were underdeveloped. I also agree with the tech path of alphabet, but my major concern is this:
As I have played games like this setup before and lost quite nicely I have had some Really Great experience at losing! Tomorrow I will post my tech path choices I have tried when I get some time. gotta work for now:(
Thanks for the input guys.

DaveMcW May 20, 2008, 09:52 PM 1. More cities
2. More workers
3. More cottages
4. More cottages
OTAKUjbski May 20, 2008, 11:01 PM I agree with everything Gooblah, pigswill and DaveMcW have suggested, but I'll reiterate 2 points:
Only 2 Cities!? Excluding the Jungle, I see 2 great seafood cities SE and SW of Washington.
Instead of Machinery, you should have Mathematics and Calendar. (It's also a pity you gave up the 3 Dyes/3 Spices/Rice site to Hammurabi.)
--------
You don't need X-bows to conquer anybody this early. Catapults and Swordsmen do just fine (yes, even against the Bowman).
Alphabet is worthless to tech, IMHO. Typically, just wait until the AI researches it and trade for it.
Try to stop thinking of Wonders as solutions. Specifically in this case, the Colossus only represents +2 :commerce:, so it's definitely not a solution. A Settler, two Workboats and a Library will do (would've done) WAY more for your economy. (Or a stack of Swords.)

Agreed! Done!
Then It was time to discover others, for trade or killin...
Here is a save of currently applied physics: Find-em, Tie-em up, Kill-em and rinse repeat...
Though After I have this going it takes longer thanks to Vassalazation of Brennus (newly discovered).
This could be going stronger and have an earlier Conquest win but Things went ary with Isabella needing some love too..:D
Any suggestions about what could be done to make this a quicker win?
Thanks for all the advice also!

Why only 2 cities? This confuses me...
Alphabet is worthless if not trading but I do trade some with one (and only one) buddy. This time Hatty.
If Wonders are not solutions then why bother to have the Industrious trait? or combine it with Marble/Stone?
The stack of swords cost me more to keep expecially in the field so how do I conteract this early on?
Gooblah May 21, 2008, 02:28 PM OK.

1) Your economy wasn't toasted at all! You ran a small deficit at 100% research - not bad. A rule of thumb is to build cities until you can only run a surplus at 60% on the science slider; then build cottages or use specialists to get research going.
2) Rock Throwers? Anyways, focus on Machinery and other Medieval Era techs after you reach the Medieval Era. In other words, get Construction, Iron Working, and other Classical Techs to war with, since Marathon mode ensures a long, long Classical Era. Swords with City Raider (and some with Combat I/Cover) along with Catapults will finish of Hammurabi. His Bowmen are fierce, but after suiciding Barrage-promoted Catapults to inflict collateral damage, you should be fine. Also, instead of warring to get cities, you should also settle a few of your own (2 is not enough, period).
3) I was playing from your later save (410 BC or something). And you didn't have Code of Laws. Next time, I suggest grabbing Code of Laws with the Oracle, since you snag a religion and Courthouses.
4) Try a 1.5 Workers/City ratio. That usually does the trick for a while. If you are planning on settling a city in the jungle, make sure you bring 3 or more Workers to chop jungle, alleviating health issues and opening up more land for work.

I remember having 20-30% sci rating after building about 5-6 cities so I thought I needed to get some money going quick qith the Collosus and cottages, but it quickly got on track with cottages that I had built then and the collosus.
COL had been taken before I started it so I missed all the religious benny's. I even had no religion of my own all through the game and still won! (quite remarkable for me) I just used Hatty's and she stayed Freindly all through the game.
I try to build the workers like 2 per city but always have someone attack me before I can get any defenders built so I short myself to start with then crank them ASAP.
I agree that Machinery is not a good tech to stat with at this early a stage but I had not used it before much not even in the Medieval age so It is kinda new to me and I was hoping for some crossbows incase Hamurabi got nasty early.
Anyways: Thanks A lot for your commenting I will do somewhat better each time I play and for those who care here is the final save point before games end. I have had a couple better scores upwards to 77K with Roosevelt same type of game but most are much much lower.
