First off what nationality do you consider yourself, and if you had move to another country, considering all the different cultures and communities in which you could choose, which one would you join?
I consider myself to be an American, but I admire the candor and wisdom of the Dutch and I think I would move to Belgium.

I am an Alaskan first and an American second. But I plan to do a lot of travelling in my life, and I'll probably dwell temporarily in many other places. Japan is definitely on the list, as is the previously mentioned Vancouver, British Columbia. (Not because it's apparently paradise, necessarily, but for personal reasons. http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif) I'd also like to spend some time in Continental Europe learning Italian, Dutch, and Frisian. But when I finally do settle down for good, it will most likely be somewhere in England, the land of my ancestors. (I also have ancestors among the Germans, Swedes, and Cherokee, but I feel the greatest connection to the English.)

It's not that unusual. A lot of people are part Native American. I've even read that during the age of colonization, a lot of English men found the Cherokee women more desirable than their own English women, because the Cherokee women were, by their culture, more independent and willing to express themselves. It seems surprising that a European in those days would want such a woman, but then again, I suppose a woman with no mind of her own would be unattractive in any age. She certainly would be to me.
But then that may just be the Cherokee in me. Or the Swede; I've also read that Scandinavian women were the most free women in Europe during the Viking era, with more rights than women had anywhere else. http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/viking.gif

I'm English. As far back as I've traced my family tree - which is not far, only 200 years - everyone is English.

However there is a hint of Swedish ancestry. I'm directly descended from someone 6 generations ago whose surname was Aspland. From the name it would seem his ancestors were probably Scandinavian. And there was a forename used for 4 out of the last 6 generations that suggests a Norwegian link.

My wife is American. Her ancestry is half German, quarter Sicilian, sixteenth Cherokee, and the rest a miscellany of Scots etc.

My family heritage is Polish. But I'm anAMERICAN!!!!!!!! I think that a lot of people in this country need to take some time & really think about what being an American really means! Too many people seem to think that because of s**t that went down 100 to 200 years ago, means that they deserve a free ride. I realize that by saying this I'm opening a can of worms. But I feel very strongly about it.

When is this country going to wake up & realize how great it could be if we really started working together!?!?

I believe that every informed person in America does want to work together to form a more efficient government, but the government as a whole has been working against it's own interest. Instead of being a reliable, proficient government, we find barriers of red tape and laws that clog the system because the government is trying to be something it's not. Furthermore, if you think your living in a democracy wake up because the facts represent us as being a republic.

Most of my ancestors came to Australia five generations ago except for one grandmother who was born in England (Northampton) but her family were originally from Ireland. Prior to coming to Australia my ancestors came from England (Cornwall, Exeter, Kent), Ireland, Wales, Scotland and the Italian region of Switzerland. Some of my English ancestors were originally Huguenots fleeing religious persecution in France and Belgian.

I would contest that ;)

Ethnically, I'm British (English and Scottish) with a splash of Native American a few generations back.

Of course, since all of my family has lived in the United States since before the Revolutionary War (some even in Jamestown and Plymouth), I suppose I could be considered ethnically American, and I'm certainly an American national.

On an aside, I'm one of three students of British heritage at my school. One of the other two is my brother. Around here, anyway, the original English settlers are all but gone; it's rather amazing that English has managed to stay the national language when the ethnically-British population is so small (with pluralities only in Utah and New Hampshire, IIRC).

Canadian, Anglophone Quebecer, currently of Longueuil. But nationality is unimportant for me.

My father is from Jamaica (but is white), left at 14 because it gained independence, and my grandmother ... didn't really like the blacks. Or the French. Which is ironic, since she was born in Haiti, lived in Jamaica, and died in Quebec. (Of course, I only inferring this from second hand information, since I only knew as a sickly old woman in a hospital.) His roots were throughly British. There is a college in England with our last name; named after our (presumed) ancestor. Furthermore, it is a compound name, both names being German.

My mother grew up in a little village in the barrios of Luzon (the Philippines), where, as far as I know, generations of her ancestors lived. She got a degree in teaching before moving to Singapore, Hong Kong and Winnipeg before coming to Quebec.

On an aside, I'm one of three students of British heritage at my school. One of the other two is my brother. Around here, anyway, the original English settlers are all but gone; it's rather amazing that English has managed to stay the national language when the ethnically-British population is so small (with pluralities only in Utah and New Hampshire, IIRC).I suppose it is a kind of compromise language. And, many learned English to be as American as possible. If not the direct immigrants, then their children, whether they were born in country or at the home country.

But I lie the diversity...just wish the family still had some of the good stuff they enjoyed in Poland way before everyone decided it would be an awesome battlefield for a couple centuries. Meh, it'd go to the family still in Poland, those that didn't choose or could get away from Eastern Europe after the war.

Oh right...if I had to move to another country...probably Canada...Vancouver perhaps. If language wasn't a problem, maybe in Eastern Europe somewhere, try to live the good life and train myself to be a person advancing the place I'm living in.

I'm an American. I'll probably retire in Southeast USA. However, of all the places I've lived nothing comes close the awesome culture I've experienced in Okinawa. If I spoke Japanese I'd really consider moving here. A close second was Ireland, but I don't like the cold. Okinawa is a safe environment (very, very low crime), the friendliest and most helpful people I've ever met, and if your single, the hottest women on Earth. It also has increadible weather. My ancestry is mostly Eastern European Jewish, although at least a quarter is Western European Jewish (the Van Der Walde family of Emden, Germany, the name suggesting Dutch origins.) In the two generations previous to mine, the family has been American, German, and Jerusalemite - my mother's parents were both born in the USA (of Eastern European Jewish descent); my father's mother was born in Emden, and his father in Jerusalem (third generation here, Russian family I think.) Both of my parents have lived in Jerusalem for most of their lives, although my mother is decidely American and still thinks of moving back to the US every now and then.
My own identity is generally Earthling/Terran/Citizen-of-the-World (almost literally, as I have an EU citizenship along with my Israeli and American ones.) I feel more American than any other one nationality, but in a very weird way since I've never lived in the States. In Israel I'm considered very American and mildly German (working on increaing that factor), in America I'm very Israeli, and in Germany I'm very American and noticably Israeli.
If I had to choose where to move right now, it would be Germany. I intend to go to university there and then decide where next. I highly doubt I'll ever choose to come back to live in Israel. It will likely be either Germany or the US or remotely possibly Scandinavia.

It says British on my passport.I should expand on my terse answer before...

Like Jesus, I am an NRI. Unlike him though, I live in England. I could have dual citizenship and become the PIO (Person of Indian Origin) which Silver is on about, but the expense does not justify the benefit. Originally from just south of Goa in India, I also have a Portuguese sense of identity mixed into an Indian identity. My surname is Portuguese, the family's religion which I ignore is Portuguese styled Catholicism. All my cousins, aunts, uncles etc all have names like Pinto, Da Silva, Menezes, Mascarenhas and so on. This means I often have no interest in identifying with Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims etc in the UK. They are just another people who I share a certain 'Indianess' with. The difference between those Indians' identities and mine can be likened to the difference between say a German and an Italian, or a Greek and an Irishman.

Having never lived in India, but visiting it frequently, this means my 'Indiness' is hardly paramount. Growing up in Zambia, Africa and then living most of my formative years in England means there is a strong English/British identity. And some affection for Zambia.

It's all a bunch of swings (experiences) and roundabouts (constructed terminology) anyway and nationality doesn't mean much to me.

Yes business, my company is trying to equip the Air Traffic Management Bureau with our software, but it's very long. Chengdu was relatively nice, and I noticed a lot of changes between my two stays (a lot more shopping streets). For the climate, I don't know, I couldn't really see the sun because of pollution. For the language, well, almost no one speak English, and even fewer French... And as my Chinese is quite limited, well, bargaining was funny.

I have a funny anecdote BTW. At the Civil Aviation Hotel were I was a guest, I saw that I could have internet access. So I went to the main desk and asked for it in my best English. The guy there look at me with a blank expression, and say "OK, go back to your room, I do it". So I go back, and wait, and wait... Nothing.
I go gack to the desk, and ask again. Suddenly, I see a light of understanding in his eyes! He ask me to go back to my room, he will send someone. Just 5 minutes later I was back, a knock on the door : a woman in charge of cleaning the room enters.... and explain to me very patiently (in Chinese) how to turn on the hot water.
I quite asking then....
And I'm sure when she climb down she told the guy at the reception "this westerners are very stupid, they don't even know how to get hot water!"

The food is really spicy, but I've discovered drinking a lof of tea helps a lot.
They didn't try to have me drunk every night, there was only one official dinner (me alone with 12 Chinese)... But they didn't succeed. I said I was on medication (that was true) and my doctor has strictly forbidden mixing it with alcohol (that was not so true). So they get drunk themselves instead

American, First gen(mothers side) 3rd gen(fathers side) so that makes me 2nd gen by average :) . mostly Scottish(65%+), next is norwegian(12.5%), and the rest is german, english, irish.

I'd move to the scottish highlands or edinburagh(excuse the spelling), Japan, Israel, norway, and italy.

Mongol Horde, most americans like the english much more than the french. maybe you're only second.

Really? ;) :D

And you are right. The rest is kinda completely irrelevant. We are kiwis!
But I do like knowing what my ancestry is.

I'd probably go live in Europe somewhere, or mebbe Canada.

I could move to France, if it weren't for French politics. :p

Maybe Australia otherwise...

A quick view of this thread reveals alot of people who would move to australia if they had to.

If this holds true for the larger population, then their could be more potential immigrants for australia then the current population of australia.

ummm, if I had to move, I'd certainly go somewhere warmer. maybe italy or spain or south-western US or maybe Australia (can't really say since I haven't been to Australia yet, I'll check it out first :) ). France would be an option too.

I consider myself Austrian....especially when watching Alpine Skiing in TV :)
Mainly European the rest of the time.

If I could move I would move either to Spain (climate - I hate cold weather), but I also find Sweden or New Zealand interesting (job opportunites and culturewise)

And platypuses!

Platypi. I think :mischief:

You'll be lucky to find one in the wild. They're increasingly rare.

If you do move, come and live on the east coast, in Newcastle. It's a beautiful city (not as nice as bathurst though...) :)

I'm dual nationality British-French.
I was Born in Devon.
My heritage is Londonian/Isere.
I speak French and English both fluently, and consider myself as English as John Bull, and as French as Marianne.
I don't hold a passport (partly because of economic reasons; partly due to pride), and instead hold a French ID card.
I'm probably gonna vote in England (but refuse English nationality).

what a weirdo.

but anyway, im English and as far as i know(or want to know) my entire family is English.

if i had to move to another country it would most likely be USA or any other English speaking country, except Ireland as they hate the English

If i were to move to another country, It will most likely be either France or Spain. I just love the Meditteranean climate, which is very similar to Perth's climate.

I am born in Sweden of Swedish parents and therefore consider myself Swedish, which also is what my passport says. If I was to move to another country there are several possibilities for different reasons.

25% Chinese and 75% Taiwanese.

But I consider myself to be a bit of an alien, because people tend to have this feeling of strangeness, or me not belonging when I'm around in both America and in Taiwan.

According to my heritage I am about 75% Prussian, but I view myself as an American before a Prussian. Yes I know Prussia no longer exists. I mean the Prussia of the 1800's. We were from an area in the former Danzig (Gdansk) Corridor.

That would be Western Prussia, and yes it still exist's as an area (Part of Poland since 1919), but not as an independent nation (Turned to Germany in 1871).

I'm Dutch, or rather, Netherlandish.

From my father site, every single ancestor was born in the Netherlands tracable from 1800 or so.
My mother's mother's side is also fully Netherlandish.
My mother's father' family comes from Germany, but I do no exactly rememember where they decided to move. My grandfather's grandfather might be born in Germany, most certainly his father.

I was born in the eastern part of the Netherlands (thus not in Holland).

I always wonder howmany Americans (not only onn this site) have Irish, Scottish, German, native American, Italian, Spanish, Hispanic (whatever that may be), Dutch or Russian ancestors, whereas hardly anyone mentions English, French or African ancestors.

I guess around 1830, americans were mostly English/French/African, mixed with small portions of Dutch and Swedish.
I know huge immigration waves have been there, but most certianly the English and French roots must be there, right?
And African.... well, not too many blacks here, I guess.

Why not? :)

USA - California to be more specific. Never been there, seduced by American movie- and TV-industry. :p

Australia - Never been there either, but I reckon I could settle in there. Some of my friends go backpacking there every once in a while and they keep going back there for some reason. :)

Norway - Hey hey hey. :) Nice people, not too far away from home either. :p Been there just once, but I have lots of friends (Swedish) living and working in Oslo.

Canada - No, just kidding. :D

Yes, maybe, maybe, yes, no, no, no (unless you count portugese), maybe, yes.

For me, at least. ;)

I'm unsure exactly what my maternal grandfather's heritage was. Quite possibly there was Irish, Dutch, German and Scottish in him.

Ironically, I can claim the Irish through my Russian/Indian side of the family....

Thats because the French migrated to other areas outside America and the English migration was pretty far back timewise and was relativily small when compared to the waves of people from other european countries. To find english ancestry you have to stay on the east coast; New England Yankees and probably VA and the Carolinas.

That said I am an American and I have primarily English/Scots/Irish in my geneological record.

100% American. ;)

By heritage, I am 50% Nowegian, 25% German/Swiss, and 25% European Mongrel (Mostly Scottish, but some English, French, and who knows what else thrown in).

I have lived in Germany and Italy, and have visited several other European countries, but if I really had to leave the USA, I think my first choice would be Australia.

That's what I meant, I know it still exists, its Polish now. I believe it to be a part of Germany still (even though it isn't), worthless Treaty of Versailles. And I didn't mean as an independent nation.
