Can someone shed some light on this game please? I can't gather information very well myself, so can someone post some info on this game? Also, when does it come out in stores?

Well, I just got a reservation at the local EB Games. I'm first in line, once it arrives in October (perfectly timed for my birthday).

Is it really that hard to be first in line in Whitehorse? :mischief:

Yes it is. You see, since it's build on ice, it moves a bit furing the night. So you must make sure to pitch your tentgloo on a sled and secure it to one of the hitching posts in the building's outer wall next to a heating vent. Waiting in line anyother way will result in you being frozen in line or, since hte building will have moved, you'll be lucky to still be in the line at all.

*The above may not be the least bit accurate.

@SuBi- Someone beat me to Civ4 Warlords... so apparently other people are capable of it in this town.

@PrinceScamp- Nah, we've got a layer of high-friction dirt over the permafrost to hold things in place.

Does anyone here know if a reservation at EB Games is the same as a pre-order?

Stop reminding me howlong I have to wait for this :D I am so looking forward to this.

My only fear is that they have the mechanics all nicely worked out, and forget about challenging gameplay.

Does anyone know if this will also be released on consoles first, after which the pc user has to wait 4 months to get a crack at it? Or is this mainly a pc game?

Silly me. That's the first time I read about this game. Looks amazing!! :goodjob: The goofy nintendo-like graphics will be something different from my usual game choices, but the premise sounds great. Every civ enthusiast has to at least give it a try.

Yeah the graphics dont particularly appeal to me, but the evolution and multi genre aspect blows me away...

I intend to buy and play it, but I don't think it will have staying power. The universe is indeed huge, but it looks like it lacks detail. No economy, no resources, no research...

I can just see the thing getting boring fast, "oh wow I went to another world and did the exact same thing I did at the last 100 worlds" sort of thing.

I am looking forward to this, but am not sure how fun it will be in the endgame. Allegedly, your culture/civilization is supposed to act with other players civs in some universal/galatic setting?

I assume this means that your 'spore' civilization could be wiped out by another players civ?

Of course, the fun part is simply designing your own critters and getting them to that piont.

Ziggy Stardust

Well, I think there are like 4 or maybe 5 stages to it. Knowing these type of games, it could take awhile.

Well seems stage 4 is to mimic Civilization that means Stage 4 is maybe a few hours long.

Does that mean Ill spend the first stage playing several hours of Pacman?

Depending on the reviews I'll probably get it, just not for a few months. I never, ever buy pc games on launch, there's just too many lazy programmers/pushy marketers/stupid beancounters to trust it'll be right at launch.

The biggest problem could be DRM. There was a big uproar a few weeks ago when they announced Spore would be required to phone home every 10 days to be playable. Don't have internet on your computer at check in time? Their authentication servers are down? Too bad, you can't play the game you paid for. They claim to have backed down from this after the public outcry, but I'll wait and see what they end up doing. If it has something like SecurROM or StarForce, I won't buy it, no matter what.

A similar plan for mandatory authentication every 10 days on another anticipated EA PC game, Spore, was also scuttled, according to a statement from the game's producer. Both Mass Effect and Spore will now authenticate whenever users go online to download new content.

It will be decisive seeing if this game acts like an old Maxis game or a new Maxis game in terms of content. But seriously, don't bash Maxis for what EA does (milking a great idea for as much money as possible). Maxis is a great company, EA is... EA.

I'm sure I'm going to enjoy this game... I had countless happy hours playing SimEarth years ago. Can't wait for the creature editor.

I think Spore is more World of Warcraft than Civilization.

Stage 1: Tetris
Stage 2: Pac-Man
Stage 3: Diablo
Stage 4: Populous
Stage 5: SimCity
Stage 6: Civilization
Stage 7: SimEarth
Stage 8: Master of Orion

These were the comments at some E3 meeting. I personally think Stage 6 is more StarCraft/Age of Empires than Civilization (there I go about StarCraft again), and Stages 1, 5, and 7 have probably been wiped out at some point.

warpstorm
May 28, 2008, 09:53 AM
Swein, how is a single player game more like WOW than Civ? WOW (to me) is a grind with chat. Since there will be no chat...

In addition, since stage 6 is being designed by the same person who designed Civ IV, I suspect it'll be sorta like Civ.
