I'm a bit of a civ noob since I just started yesterday. I'm sure this has been discussed before, but being new to the terminolgy, I'm not sure what to search for. A lot of my confusion comes from getting citys to revolt and join my side.

Right now I am in the middle of a game and have another civ's city completly surrounded (he has only the 1 tile) and when I hover over it, the popup says it's 2% Greek. I see that there are armies in the city defending, and from my reading, that seems to stop revolts.

Is there a way to get a city to revolt to your civ even if they have armys there? My city that looks like it is about to expand and take it over is at 8000/50000, do I just have to wait until it builds enough culture to expand onto that last tile? I think I have seen a revolt with army in city before, but I'm not 100% positive.

Also, a quick question about spreading religion. What causes a missionary to fail to spread a religion to my own city or another civ's city? Also, is there a way to know if it will fail so I don't waste a missionry?

Thanks for the help.

Missionaries fail sometimes because of other religions present in the city. There is no real way to tell that it will fail except trying it. It is usually worth it to try though because the chance of failure is small. Exception- when the other civ is in theocracy, only their state religion can spread so don't bother trying.

As for the culture flipping- Try getting them involved in a war on the other side of their country. If it is an army, it shoud move over there to combat the threat. If it's only a garrison then it shouldn't be to hard to flip it as long as the city in question isn't one of the AI core cities. Judging by the fact that it only has 1 tile of it's own- it isn't.

I've had simalar problems. I've had some of my major cities captured:mad:, but it said it was EX: 99% Mayan, 0% Celtic, but it never flipped. The invading army was stuck int the city, and I never got open Borders. I used my hard earned espionage points to look at the city screen. THey had 27 happiness:D, because of hereditary rule. Is there any thing to do abouy that?

^^ That is because Conquered cities will not flip back to the previous owner - unless you are using custom game and activated "City Flipping after Conquest", which is off by default.

When it comes to missionaries, the thing to do there is save the game each time before using it if it is a vital conversion. Reload if it fails but do not attempt it again on the reload, let it pass a turn before trying again since for some reason reload attempts always have the same outcome.

If you are loosing cities to the AI, i have just 1 term to bring to your attention - 'collateral damage'.

Build mostly collateral damage units with collateral damage promotions and then sacrifice the first couple on AI units that invade your territory. You will typically loose 3 or 4, at first but then the rest after that should be victorious. The end result is that the AI will be loosing far more units than you, this should tip the balance of war in your favour.

Correct.

If anything doesn't go your way in the game, the correct response is to reload and try again. If you do this you will notice that you will win far more often and so, by definition, will be a much better player.
