Hi, Welcome :wavey:

You don't give us much to go on.

1. Has it ever run correctly? If yes, what have you changed that could gave stopped it running now?

2. If it has never run correctly, have you installed it properly, in accordance with the instructions in the package? You have to drag the entire Civilization IV FOLDER from the DVD to copy it into a location on your hard drive, then double click the Civilization IV application in that copy to run it.

3. When does it crash? As soon as you try to run it? After any screens have been displayed? During a game?

4. Which version of Civ4 are you trying to launch? Single click its application icon in Finder and select Get Info in the File menu. There should be a Version in the display, eg. 1.74 (52473)

5. What Mac hardware and OS X version are you using?

6. When the crash occurs the alert window should have a "Report" button. Click that to see the crash report details. If you copy and paste the first 50 lines or so of the report details to a post here we *may* be able to interpret it. A better bet might be to open a ticket at Aspyr Tech Support ( http://support.aspyr.com/).

That's likely the problem, remove the preferences in your home folder and try again. There is always a change your files got corrupt by shutting down the hard way

When you switched it of by holding down the power switch, was that because Civ4 had hung, or some other program had hung, or you just thought it was a good idea? It seems surprising that a 2 day old Mac would hang to the point where it had to be forced to power down, and it's generally a bad idea to do it unless there's absolutely no other option.

The forced power down may have resulted in a corruption of one of the key files needed to get the Civ4 software running. I would suggest that you trash the following files and folders before trying to run Civ4 again. Don't worry, they'll be recreated when Civ4 runs again:

1. In your Home folder - the one with the house icon and your user name - there's a folder called 'Library'. Inside there is a folder called 'Application Support', and that contains a folder called 'Civilization IV'. Trash that 'Civilization IV' folder.

2. Also in the Library folder there is one called Preferences. Inside there you should find a file called 'com.aspyr.civ4.plist'. Trash that file.

The try launching the Civ4 application again.

NOTE: If you have the Civ4 Warlords expansion then you may need to do the same with the <your home>/Library/Application Support/Civilization IV Warlords/ folder and the <your home>/Library/Preferences/com.aspyr.civ4warlords file.

[Whoops!] Cross posted with Onagan while I was starting the barbecue.

I'm a dumb ass and have now learned my lesson about doing that...

I was in a rush to change to windows : /

You guys both rock thank you again for your help.

Which version of Civ4 are you trying to launch?

1.61 V9565

I don't think it will work, but you could download the latest update from Aspyr
http://www.aspyr.com/product/info/5

It's dying in the early initialisation of the 3D graphics system.

Did you reboot after removing everything and before reinstalling? It might be worth trying that. You are getting close to the point where you have to throw yourself on the mercy of Aspyr Tech Support :eek: Anyway, here is my take on what you have said:

I'll assume the rest of your Mac is working OK, if you don't launch Civ4? In that case, you should not need to delete and reinstall your OS. You can't be deleting *all* of the Civ4 related files if you are still getting the same error. To remove everything before reinstalling Civ4, you need to delete the following (where '~/' is a standard abbreviation for "your Home folder"):

/Applications/Civilization IV/ assuming that you installed Civ4 in /Applications/ - the whole folder.
~/Documents/Civilization IV/ - the whole folder.
~/Library/Application Support/Civilization IV/ - the whole folder.
~/Library/Preferences/com.aspyr.civ4.plist - a single file.

Then go through the installation process from scratch.

Note that you are running version 1.61. As Onagan indicates, there is now a patch to version 1.74. This is not likely to be the reason for your problem, but you should consider upgrading once you get out of this mess.

any other advice for a new Civ fanatic : )
The following now applies:

Note that you are running version 1.61. As Onagan indicates, there is now a patch to version 1.74. This is not likely to be the reason for your problem, but you should consider upgrading once you get out of this mess

Beyond that, read some of the Strategy articles on this site, and consider joining in with the Succession Games and/or Game of the Month or Hall of Fame competitions, to learn from others. Even if you don't join in, you can learn a lot by reading the threads that describe players' games and their decisions.

And don't waste too much time looking for Mac-compatible mods. There are not many that work!

and try to shut down the Mac normal ;)

@AlanH, it seems you can read that those crashlogs, it's all Welsh to me. Is there a site or so, where i can find more about it?

There may well be useful tutorials on reading crash logs out there - try Google. But I just read the tea leaves and try to make intelligent guesses, based on more than a few years experience in the computer industry. Here's my approach ...

First it's worth checking that the crash log is for the application that the user thinks crashed:

Path: /Applications/Civilization IV/Civilization IV.app/Contents/MacOS/Civilization IV

Note that this tells us that Civ4 is installed in /Applications/.

We can also see that the OS version is the current Leopard release:
OS Version: Mac OS X 10.5.2 (9C7010)

Then look for the part that describes the crashed thread:

Thread 0 Crashed:
0 com.aspyr.civ4 0x0001df71 IDirect3DDevice_Mac::Clear(unsigned long, _D3DRECT const*, unsigned long, unsigned long, float, unsigned long) + 911
1 ??? 0x02ae5929 0 + 44980521
2 dyld 0x8fe12e76 ImageLoaderMachO::doModInitFunctions(ImageLoader:: LinkContext const&) + 246
3 dyld 0x8fe0e723 ImageLoader::recursiveInitialization(ImageLoader:: LinkContext const&, unsigned int) + 307
4 dyld 0x8fe0e809 ImageLoader::runInitializers(ImageLoader::LinkCont ext const&) + 57
5 dyld 0x8fe04102 dyld::initializeMainExecutable() + 146
6 dyld 0x8fe07b5f dyld::_main(mach_header const*, unsigned long, int, char const**, char const**, char const**) + 2975
7 dyld 0x8fe01872 dyldbootstrap::start(mach_header const*, int, char const**, long) + 818
8 dyld 0x8fe01037 _dyld_start + 39

This lists the subroutines that were called, in sequence, from the bottom to the top. The top one was the routine that was running at the time of the crash. You can see in the above that most of the routines in progress were initialisation routines in dyld (the Dynamic Link Editor) which is Apple OS X software. The first aspyr routine called was the one that crashed, in line 0:

0 com.aspyr.civ4 0x0001df71 IDirect3DDevice_Mac::Clear(unsigned long, _D3DRECT const*, unsigned long, unsigned long, float, unsigned long) + 911

IDirect3DDevice_Mac is likely to be the library that Aspyr have created to convert the original Firaxis WIndows DirectX calls into OpenGL calls to drive the MacOS X display system.

Hence my comment "It's dying in the early initialisation of the 3D graphics system. ". We know that Civ4 is failing very early in the launch sequence, so something basic is probably seriously corrupted.
