View Full Version : The Set Game
LightFang May 28, 2008, 10:02 PM For those of you who have not played this before, a concise description:
At the beginning of each round, the GM defines the set, or a rule which is used to determine the members of a set.
For example:
Rule: Any word which starts with the letter "A".
Thus "apple" is part of the set; "pear" is not.
The rest of the players have to guess this rule by making a post with these three contents:
1. A guess of the rule.
2. A guess of a member.
3. A guess of a nonmember.
For example, DarkFang may post this:
Rule: Words that begin with "L".
Member: Love
Nonmember: Hatred.
GMs have to update the list as players move along. Whoever guesses the rule correctly can be the next GM.
-----
Let's start with a simple one then.
"Limb" is a member of the set.
"Appendage" is not a member of the set.
Neverwonagame3 May 28, 2008, 10:20 PM Four letter words?
Member: Lack
Non-Member: Obliterate
LightFang May 28, 2008, 10:52 PM Your rule is wrong.
Members: Limb, lack.
Nonmembers: Appendage, obliterate
Neverwonagame3 May 28, 2008, 11:10 PM I'll then try the obvious one of words which start with L.
Members: Limb, lack, land
Nonmembers: Appendage, obliterate, war
LightFang May 28, 2008, 11:11 PM Your rule is wrong.
Members: Limb, lack, land, war
Nonmembers: Appendage, obliterate
flyingchicken May 29, 2008, 12:04 AM Monosyllabic vs polysyllabic?
Members: Limb, lack, land, war, think
Nonmembers: Appendage, obliterate, actuate

Nonmembers: Jump, penis, butt, arbitrage, nutritional, bikini, thong, revive
Perfection May 29, 2008, 01:22 AM Is this some word sum crap? Because I would be totally disapointed if it is.
flyingchicken May 29, 2008, 01:24 AM I dun gettit.
Perfection May 29, 2008, 01:30 AM word sums are where you take each letter and find it's position in the alphabet (so a=1, b=2, z=26 etc.) and then sum up the entire word to find some value.
Anyways my guess is food
Members: spuds
Nonmembers: pornography
flyingchicken May 29, 2008, 01:33 AM Naw, but (damning hint) close. :mischief: "Food" rule is wrong.

Mise May 31, 2008, 06:36 AM I don't know the rule, but is "potatoes" a member?
Oh hell I guess for the sake of the game I'll make stuff up...
Rule is they're all slang words/euphemisms for something rude, as opposed to actual rude words.
Member: "meat and two veg"
Non-member: "potatoes"
flyingchicken May 31, 2008, 06:53 AM Rule is wrong. :)
Members: Banana, cerise, spuds, punani
Nonmembers: Jump, penis, butt, arbitrage, nutritional, bikini, thong, revive, pornography, oak, mushrooms, vagina, chicken, steel, onions, juniper, meat and two veg, potatoes
Hint compilation: word-sum as described by Perfection is close to the rule, but it's not the rule.
lutzj May 31, 2008, 01:46 PM Rule: Word for food item with <6 letters.
Member: apple
Nonmember: sporadic
flyingchicken May 31, 2008, 02:08 PM Nein.
Members: Banana, cerise, spuds, punani
Nonmembers: Jump, penis, butt, arbitrage, nutritional, bikini, thong, revive, pornography, oak, mushrooms, vagina, chicken, steel, onions, juniper, meat and two veg, potatoes, apple, sporadic
Perfection May 31, 2008, 06:57 PM Goddamnit, I don't want to calculate out stupid word sums. The set should not require me to do annoying addition.
Tasslehoff May 31, 2008, 07:29 PM Banana= 13+13+1+1+1+2= 31
Cerise= 3+5+18+9+19+5=50
spuds= 19+19+21+4+19=82
punani= 16+21+14+14+1+9=85
No clue...
flyingchicken May 31, 2008, 10:22 PM It's not word sums, but it is related.
You can avoid "annoying addition" by using Net toolz.
Mise Jun 01, 2008, 11:26 AM It's not word sums, but it is related.
You can avoid "annoying addition" by using Net toolz.
Lucky too, cos all of Tasslehoff's sums were wrong :p
Is it something to do with Hex? Or binary?
Perfection Jun 01, 2008, 11:29 AM It's not word sums, but it is related.
You can avoid "annoying addition" by using Net toolz.I googled for five minutes and couldn't find any.
flyingchicken Jun 01, 2008, 02:03 PM Hint: It's so shallow you might hate me for it.
I googled for five minutes and couldn't find any.Uh, sorry, more specifically, for the rule, not for word-sums as you described.
Perfection Jun 01, 2008, 05:27 PM No, I hate you already. So don't worry about that.
flyingchicken Jun 01, 2008, 05:34 PM Okay, maybe it's so shallow you might hate me even more. :p
Come on, keep on guessing.

Perfection Jun 02, 2008, 02:01 AM What do you mean by shallow? Simple rules are good, complex rules aren't. Using obscure things is also not good.
flyingchicken Jun 02, 2008, 02:55 AM Do you people play boardgames?

Whitworth isn't an aircraft - they're manufacturers. But on with the game, they're not all Brit aircraft or weather over water. I've added another clue.
