It had happened: the worst estimates… and more. Ceaseless exploitation of natural resources and blatant disregard for the damage being done had paid off. The water levels had risen, until even the most stubborn industrialist had to agree. By 2100, the water levels had forced most governments away from their capitals to higher ground, and the Low Countries had completely flooded. By 2050, the water levels had stabilized, but the atmosphere was at a temperature much higher than most crops and livestock were used to. Millions of Tons of crops were lost, and countless cattle died. Famine was rampant, and revolts exploded everywhere, even in the nations deemed most stable. Deadly pandemics spread, using the deteriorating global trade network. Of these, the most deadly affected not humans, but the grasses they depended upon. Wheat, Corn, oats, barley, rye, rice, all of the Poacea family were devastated. Various strains survived, but these were invariably the smaller, less nutritious strains. Civilization collaped, and within generations, stories were being told of the amazing powers of the “ancients,” who from their thrones in their great shining cities, dared to believe they were gods. Society devolved, and only in the most fertile areas there remained settled people, living in ignorance and feudality. Tribes of Hunter-gatherers inhabited the rest of the world…
700 years passed, and agriculture again began to be able to support large numbers. As villages grew into towns, and towns grew into cities, scholars turned to the written records from the dark times and before…
There was a world to claim, and untold secrets to discover among tribes of deadly ferals and savages and gangs of river pirates and brigands.
Reclaiming The World
Rules: (they have changed slightly)
I) Getting Started
To begin the game, we start at a Post apocalyptic, Dark Age technology level. When signing up, all you need is the name of your country, a color, a location on the map for your capital, and filling out of the Stats. The kingdom or nation will be the small plot of land surrounding the capital. This is a blank map of eastern North America. Since this is a story-telling-based game, we would recommend a history of your kingdom up to this point, and a flag would be excellent too.
When creating your stories, please do not make to many references to the fallen civilization. It has been 700 years of Dark Age, with no one able to read the languages of the ancients. (just recently have scholars begun to be able to decode their writings.)
I should probably add: When you choose your color, do not choose any whites, light grays, blacks, or light blues. The whites are too close to the blank terrain, grays are for barbarians, blacks are too close to the border colors, and light blues too close to water.
II) The Turn
The turn is the basic unit of in-game time, and lasts from the previous update until the GMs declare that the turn is over, usually when all orders are in (See section III for details). If not everyone hands in their orders, the turn ends after 48 hours. During each turn, you sort out diplomacy and trades between other countries, and you work out agreements. However, anything you say here does not have to be truthful. Only your orders are what matter. Also, PMs can be made between players to deal with these matters. These also do not require any truth. To maintain this, we ask that PMs received by a GM not be quoted in any PMs between players.
III) Orders
Within a given period from the previous update, you must PM your orders to one of your GMs. Orders are lists of where you want to spend your money, what projects you want to make, where you want your troops to go, where you want to expand, etc. If you fail to send orders in a timely manner, your country will be automated for the turn. Missing multiple orders, without warning me in advance, may make your country an NPC, meaning that they are fully automated and open to anyone else to join. Also, when filling out orders, please include your stats.
A) Economy + Infrastructure
Your nation's economy is determined in Gold Per Turn (GPT). This is your nation's income per turn. This income is what you will use to improve your nation, either by building cities, researching technology, or building your army and navy. You can also bank your gold for spending at a future date, but it will not accumulate interest until a specific tech is introduced by me and researched. Also note your GPT will naturally rise over time due to inflation. If your GPT is in between 1 and 50, it takes 3 turns for it to rise by one. From 50 to 75, it will raise by one every 5 turns. Various technologies will and events may give Civilizations a boost.
B) Resources
Resources will be treated differently in this game than in any other game so far. Instead of generic colored blocks, they will be specific resources, which will provide a specific benefit, be it military, economic, or random.
Gold: +5 gpt
Iron: +5% military
Old Tech Dig: Random Effect
Grapes: +3 stability
Apples: +3 Stability
Wood: -10% to Built Project cost
Cotton: +5% stability
Bamboo: +5% Navy
Horses: +10% Military
Cattle: + 1 to city cap
Other Resources may become available as time goes on.
To claim a resource, there will be a base cost that must be paid before the resource can be exploited. (To represent the creation of a camp or mine.) This cost will depend on the resource and the location. The cost will be posted in the thread during an update when a person takes over a region.
C) Great People. Yes, like in Civ, we now have great people. After a particularly great turn, you may receive a great person, who will bring his expertise to help you, be it a great strategist or an innovator in the likes of Einstein and Leonardo Da Vinci.
D) Military
Your military is divided into army and navy, and each is rated by an arbitrary number that rates your country relative to the others. For every 1 gold you invest here you get 1 military point. The more military power you have, the higher the chance that you will win. However, upsets can happen, and the better military may not always win. Additionally, certain techs you can research will give you military multipliers. Also, for every 5 military you have, whether it’s army or navy, you lose 1 gpt in maintenance.
There will also be a Military Cap, which will be raised by various techs and government types. At first, the Cap will be set at 25 total Units. (land, sea, and river)
E) War details
When you are at war with someone, you PM in your orders a minimum of how many units of military you want to send and where you want to send them. If you want to, you can be more detailed, and you will probably get better results. When you capture a city, it will be in revolt. Since cities do not make units, all this means is that you don’t get its base 2 gpt for 1 turn. In this turn, you can do three things: You can do nothing, which makes Thomas.berubeg (the official War GM) flip a coin. Heads, it comes out of rebellion. Tails, it stays in for another turn. Or, you can Raze the city, erasing it from the face of the earth and adding an instant amount of gold (determined by the age you are in) to your banked gold. The last option is to Pacify the citizens, spending an amount of gold that is determined by your era to make it instantly come out of revolt.
F) Technology
The Dual GMs will pick one or two advances made in any, assign it a tech value, and open it up for everyone. You can then use Tech Points, bought at 1 gold per point, to purchase these advances. They may give economic benefits, enable further expansion, discover new resources, provide military multipliers, or really anything that technology has done for man. Some, not many, technologies will be exclusive. This means that only one or two nations can research them, and once researched they can be traded. Mostly these exclusive techs will be sent via a private PM, to preserve secrecy. And remember, you cannot trade a tech that you do not have! Trades are only recognized if you send them to both the person you’re trading with and your assigned GM, and if you lie about a tech, you will receive a penalty. Some Unique techs will be Untradeable.
G) Special Projects
Projects were a big part of the RfMK, and they will still be important. Think of something that actually makes sense, like diverting gold for a massive blitzkrieg or a boost in research, and we’ll assign it a monetary value. Additionally, you can suggest a unique technology (again, that makes sense) for your nation. If it gets approved, it will be assigned a Tech Point value and effect and will act like any other exclusive tech.
H) Cities
There are some projects that came up multiple times, and have been made into things you can spend money on. The first of these are cities. Give a name and location, you get a city on the map that adds 2 gpt to your economy. Cities cost 5 gold for the first two, and for every two after the cost increases by 5. However, if the city is lost, the gpt bonus transfers away. There is a city cap that increases with time. For the first few turns, population is too low for much expansion, and only two cities are allowed. At a predetermined time by the GMs, more cities will be allowed.
I) Expansion and Attack
If there is empty land next to your country, or within reach by sea, you can order expansion to that area. This incorporates this area into your country, as long as the request is not excessive. Expansion is limited by the technology you have researched, and may be severely limited in the beginning. Larger nations also have lower stability (See section H for info on this). Also, you can make attacks with your military. Simply say where you want to attack and with how much power, and we will set up the attack. You can tell us more (the method of transport, perhaps some tactics) and you will get better results, but you don’t have to. Defenders can also include in their orders strategies for defense and will have better results. It’s probably worth mentioning, too, that you CAN make surprise attacks (without declaring war), but you will recieve a penalty as a result. It's still worth doing, however.
J) Trade and Diplomacy Orders
When you’ve finished making arrangements with other players, you must give the orders to fulfill your part of the trade in your orders. For instance, if you are going to trade 7 tech to get 21 gold, you must say “I give 7 tech to this country” in your orders. Same goes for any other diplomatic action. In trades, the items that are traded, excluding projects, grow by 10%, rounded up. This means that if you give 4 power, the receiver receives 4.4 power, which is rounded up to 5. Technology is special when traded, because you don’t actually lose it when you trade it. It’s sort of like the flame of a candle – you can spread it without losing it. However, be careful- once a nation knows a technology, they can never unlearn it. Other diplomatic actions like treaties, alliances, and for that matter trades will be limited by tech level but are largely left up to the players’ imaginations.
K) Stability
No nation is totally stable. Several things affect your stability- your ratio of military to population (cities), your governmental types, whether you’re at war or not, the size of your empire, and various random events all have a hand in it. Your stability will be kept a secret from other nations! It will not be posted on the main stat page, but if you ask your GM for it you will receive a PM with information. Stability is ranked between 0 and 50. The higher you are, the more stable. Each nation starts at a stability of 40. Instability carries several negative effects. You have a higher chance of cities rebelling and forming their own nations, you can suffer diplomatic penalties from other NPCs, and if you have any unique technologies they are likely to be leaked by malcontents.
L) Government type
Government types carry pros and cons. Every system has its strengths and weaknesses. In the beginning you will be restricted to a few basic types, but as time progresses you can PM era-appropriate governments you want to switch to and, if approved, they will be implemented for all to use. In the start you are restricted to:
Republic: Bonus to Stability, neutral to Military, neutral to Expansion, penalty to Technology
Theocracy: Bonus to Stability, bonus to Military, neutral to Expansion, large penalty to Technology
Military Dictatorship: Penalty to Stability, bonus to Military, neutral to Expansion, neutral to Technology
City-States: Penalty to Stability, neutral to Military, neutral to Expansion, bonus to Technology
Feudalism: Neutral to Stability, bonus to Military, large penalty to Expansion, bonus to Technology
As time goes on and more people invent new governments in their PMs, new forms of government will be available.
M) Stories
The more detailed you are in your orders, the more successful you will be. If two nations clash that are absolutely equal in power, the one who is more descriptive wins. Remember, we GMs are people too, and we like reading good stories, so naturally we will want to keep the storytellers alive, right?
Likewise, Stories written in the thread may give benefits.

History: The Trikonian people were once the mightiest civilization on Earth. They were the supreme power economically and militarily, and used their financial superiority to fuel incredible technological advancements and awesome military conquest. But the Empire slowly disintegrated. Uprisings from the countries they had conquered coupled with the total depletion of their resources resulted in a catastrophic collapse of epic proportions, rivaling the destruction of the Empire of Alexander the Great and the Fall of Rome. Military might tried to stall this decline, but corruption and in-fighting among the nation's most able generals led to a bloody civil war, destroying the Empire's greatest cities and killing its greatest minds. To top it off, a vicious plague scoured the landscape, eradicating the population further. As fast as it had risen, the mighty had fallen. The remaining survivors fled to rural caves, abandoning its former population centers to escape the destruction. Over time, the Trikonian people formed various small tribes and co-existed as best as they could. Legends passed down generation to generation told its children about the once mighty Empire, with its majestic cities and incredible wealth and riches. Some thought it was a fable, others wrote it off as simply impossible that such a thing could have existed, but one man alone knew it to be true. He was a fiery orator and a cunning military strategist, and soon he had united the various tribes via the pen and the sword. He became known as The One, and after appointed Emperor convinced the population that it was their destiny to reclaim what their ancestors had created and lost. Now, organized and motivated to reclaim their former glory, they will rise above any challenge to reacquire what is rightfully theirs, and will stop at nothing to reforge The Empire.
thomas.berubeg May 29, 2008, 05:31 PM so you want to be between the river and the coast? up at the north? and you need a government.
A history would be nice, too!
Backwards Logic May 29, 2008, 05:33 PM Put the capital on the Southern River, in the little "u" shape that river makes.
thomas.berubeg May 29, 2008, 05:54 PM like so? (i updated the map, just for you!)

That's the middle of the map ;) I said north east. Look at the far North East part of the map - you'll see two rivers close together that do not touch. Put my capital on the southern river in it's dogleg - the dogleg makes a "u" shape. Thanks.
I'll do the government and history later, I just wanted to reserve a spot.

History: The Echajinians have always been seafarers. Never mind the so-called "prophets" who claim they came from a land across the Great Ocean! As if anyone could cross it! Sure, they were a little darker than most others, but that's just because they're more southern. Originally they hunted for fish, but soon their population became to big to live on boats. Now, they had to live on land. To remember their ties to the sea, they picked a spot for their capital city on the coast.

Government: Tribal Federation (made up of different pirate groups forming a grand committee overseen by the pirate king).
Location: Pick a spot, any spot along the coast.
Description: As the great 'Heat Age' began people living along the coasts of the world turned to the ocean to support them. Peaceful existence did not last for long as the different tribes of coastal warriors (dubbed 'pirates') fought bitter wars against each other. Eventually one tribe rose up and dominated the other coastal tribes. The chief of this tribe forged a pirate committee which was to be headed by himself as 'king' of the pirates. In the decades that followed fierce and isolated coastal raids were made upon the mainland by a larger, more organized pirate force. Often these raids were led by the pirate lords themselves. A grand navy was built and the pirate federation/empire prospered... Its future has just begun.

The trouble with that backstory is that if this is set 7 centuries after the major cities were abandoned with no maintainence, they would have been completely reclaimed by nature (with no sign of the roads and all of the buildings having completely collapsed) long since... Indeed, they'd be almost completely gone after 2 or 3 centuries unless the city was in an incredibly dry area... None the less though, after 700 years there would be practically nothing left of our civilization... nothing... save for a few of our massive stone monoliths like Hoover Dam, Mt. Rushmore, parts of the Great Wall of China and the Great Pyramids (though these may eventually wind up buried under wind-driven desert sands)...
Don't believe me? Check it out...

Even if the child did find something, he would not find an intact city, or anything even remotely resembling an intact city... No, hw would find a river, more grass and more trees, and perhaps a few scattered (but buried) ruins...

merciary May 31, 2008, 09:53 AM Well yes of course nature would of reclaimed most of it. But look at the ancient temples we study now, while nature has "taken over" most of them we can still tell it was a building and it's still there. I'm sure that all the skyscrapers would look like towers of green (at least the ones still standing). I figured this would add to the impressiveness of the city since to the people the entire city would look like one entire garden palace. Plus I'm not going for entire realism, since this is a game.
Also in the OP it states that it was in 2100 when everything went haywire. Who knows what type of tech they would have. Perhaps they developed maintenance droids to maintain the city until they ran out of power which could give a few hundred more years. Perhaps we improved building techniques. That show was based off of the premise that we disappear today not in a hundred years. Anything could of happened during that time.
Abaddon May 31, 2008, 09:59 AM We would not have built buildings that are designed to stand for 700 years without any maintennance. There is no point and the cost would have been very prohibitive.
Not a single scyscraper will still be standing.
Also, if we had made "maintennance bots" why would they still be working now? Infinte power sources? Uncorruptable chipboards, indestructable gearboxes and engines?
Also, a plant can raise water only so high by osmotic potential alone..
Finally.. a gift:
http://img50.imageshack.us/img50/2484/lznesqa0.png
merciary May 31, 2008, 10:07 AM I didn't say they would still be working. I assume we may of develop hydrogen fuel cells by that time and if they were refined enough and enough of them were stored the droids could perhaps function for a few centuries preventing a total collapse of the city.
Keep in mind this is just mind this is just so my story makes sense. I doubt it'll actual work just use your willing suspension of disbelief so we don't end up arguing for the entire game.
Abaddon May 31, 2008, 10:12 AM few centurys yes.. but 700 years?
Nevermind tho, I'll leave this up to the mods disgression.
thomas.berubeg May 31, 2008, 12:23 PM @abaddon: Oh! pretty! thanks alot...
My take on the whole "what would be left" thing is that none of the huge buildgins would be left, but it would still be obvious that there had onec been a city. (rusted metal girders, etc...) Ičm going to take merciary's suggestion, and say that maintenance robots had been developed, and only died off a few centuries ago... (Spoiler: some buildings are going to have small powerplants of thier own, and still functioning AIs...)

The Thor Sentient Space Weapon floated on it's lazy trek across through the zenith. It had been a long time since it had last received instructions from the Pentagon (or one of it's other locations, after the water had risen.) Many rotations of the earth had gone by, and one by one, the voices of the surface defense AI's had gone silent. the chatter on the American Military network, one of the modern wonders (at least to Thor) had gotten sparser and sparser, until only a few lonely voices called out, Thor's Among them...
AIs are not just machines, and over time, the information coming from the other Space Platforms was depressing. Even AIs can feel depressed, though thier Huge intelligence is enough to keep them from ending thier existance.
To alleviate the Depression and Boredom, Thor turned towards the Earth, and gazed downwards.
Despite all appearences, Humans had not been extinguished. Though with barely legend of thier Ancient Glory, they were rebuilding, learning lost knowledge, and conquering.
Various Empires had settled in the southern part of North America, some founded on relgious ideals, others on barbarism and Piracy...
Thor could only hope that one day, they would come back into space, and speak to him again.
Tech: Agriculture: though small scale agriculture had gone on during the dark times, with some of the resistante strains of wheat, only after large scale subsitance farming was developed could empires sustain growth, buraucracies, and standing armies. merciary Jun 03, 2008, 05:29 PM The Council of the Myamevalle Lords agreed to meet in the ruins of one of the ancient "temples". It was once a great circle with steps leading to the top going up halfway, then stopping halfway and starting again on the next level. At the top great metal beams stick out like fingers reaching to the sky, now with each of the lords banners on them.
"My they sure could build back then now couldn't they?" Spoke Lord Jones, a collector of what artifacts he could find and a seeker of knowledge. "Of course it didn't last when the Disaster."
"Don't speak of such blasphemy in such a holy place" sputtered Lord James, a old religious fanatic of the Bengal. "We all know the world fell to ruin after the Bengal and Red took their chosen and sent a curse to us who were unfit."
"Can we please not argue and just talk about what we came here for." Interjected Lord Henry, a connoisseur of life's luxuries. "I don't want to be late for my soak or it won't be hot."
"Errmmm.... Yes well, lets get this started." said Lord Smith ,the head of this Council. "Now what should we do in the coming days/months/years (how ever long an update is)...."

An Introduction to Hannah the Hood: One of Seven Pirate Lords serving under the Pirate King and elected through popular vote in her allocated tribal district.
Hannah the Hood watched them swarm throughout the town, weaving in and out of the destruction. Their cutlasses shone with the mesmerizing dance of the flames. Like a troupe of painters she thought. Flaming debris rained down around her as a cannonball hurtled through what had once been the village chapel. Painting the world a new color. The desperate cries of the wounded fell and died upon her ears. A color she was well familiar with. She turned her back on the slaughter, her green eyes flashing and her cruel mouth contorted into a smirk that held no warmth. The color of pain. The smile of the insane...
It was a good day to be a pirate.
thomas.berubeg Jun 04, 2008, 10:31 AM The map is not entirely black, and will appear more as you sedn out exploration parties or expand...

The Ironic people had suffered long, but it was at an end- they found a lush, fertile region between two rivers (referred to as "One River" and "Another River"), with a mysterious metal. They later translated a small piece of an "ancient" (from 2012 AD) text that called the metal Iron, and the people thought it was god-like and worshipped it. They even named their country "Ironic" in honor of it.

The13thRonin Jun 05, 2008, 12:25 AM An Introduction to Jarret Kirkwood also known as Jarret the Traitor: One of Seven Pirate Lords serving under the Pirate King and entitled by the Pirate King.
Jarret's hand burned. It always burned. He stared down at the branding upon the back of his right hand. He ran his fingers delicately over the T shaped scar extending from his wrist to his knuckles. Oh how it burned.
The sound of feet slapping against cobblestone echoed throughout the village. And he wept, for his and the others ambition had brought death down upon them all. Turning back he caught sight of the seven masts and colors of the Pirate Lords peaking over the village hall. Then there was blackness.
A throbbing pain in his head brought him back to his senses and withdrawing his hand from the wound he saw a mess of crimson blood. Two men stood over him. "This be my ship, he'll be dealt with in accordance to the traitors law." The other man slid his thumbs into his belt and spoke four unflinching words "I am the law." With that the man flicked his hands up revealing two pistols. Those pistols shouted into the night, calling for the blood of a single insolent Pirate Lord.
A crimson haze had covered the world that day, one that would affect Jarret for the rest of his life. The Pirate King helped Jarret up from the deck. "Welcome to your new life boy, this ship be yours now, serve her well." Later that day Jarret found the ships branding iron. He knew what he had to do to ensure that he would never again let ambition lead him to ruin.
He was seventeen. He was a Pirate Lord.

thomas.berubeg Jun 12, 2008, 04:44 PM Update 1
Thor’s second orbit over what was once southern United States presented many changes. In two years, much had happened.
A patchwork of organized fields lay where before harsh forest had grown. Zooming in, Thor could see that the growth was a variant of wheat… evidently, one of the Virus resistant strains. Judging from the size of the growth, the innovative farmer who had managed to mass-produce this strain was in Echijania, on the outskirts of the city of Echajin.
Echijania itself had grown recently (as had most of the kingdoms,) they had grown to fill most of their island, and the coast of that north of their kingdom. Similar small-scale expansion happened in all the other empires… well almost all.
In the Pirate Kingdom of the Cove, expansion was ruthless, as the seven pirate lords ravaged the coast, subjugating it. The steady supply of slaves was put to work in the cove area, working on shipyards and harbors and docks. In this manner, the coastline west of the cove was conquered, reportedly under the command of the Pirate King himself. Hannah the Hood, most ruthless of the pirate lords led the attack eastwards and northwards. The bay area north of The Cove was conquered, and its flow of slaves joined that of the east. However, as Hannah pushed more and more inland, the expertise of the pirate crews lessened. There were none better for attacking from a ship, for fighting hand to hand on the moving deck of a boat, but inland, where jungle grew, they were out of place… especially against the natives, who, after the first offerings of peace were killed, waged a guerilla war against the pirates. Hannah the Hood was forced to fall back, towards the fortified coastal positions, to gather a larger army.
The rage of the natives spread inland, and led to a great cultural upheaval. One tribe, living near an outcropping of a gray metal took advantage of the strife. Striking at the tribes nearby, the tribe of Irony, became the Ironic Empire. Armed with Metal tools and weapons, they will undoubtedly become a force to be reckoned with.
Two nations sent out parties to explore the unknown. The River Navy of the Dominion was sent upriver to explore. Though they traveled for weeks and food grew scarce, they found nothing of interest, save a few tribes.
Similar fate befell the explorers from the Myamevalle Lordship. They trekked through forest and wasteland due northwards, and as a reward came upon a great body of water, around which there was no travel… dejected and disappointed they returned home.
The nation of Galladoria experienced great growth, as did the Empire, both new founding cities.
Brutality was not reserved solely for the cove. The nation of Singordia expanded along the two rivers to the north of it, subjugating and enslaving the population… even more brutal, they devoured the corpses of their enemies. No mercy was shown, and the natives quickly realized they would have to fight to not die.
Within Their own lands, even harsher brutalities were being committed, though only dark rumors reached the other empires…

Terrance888 Jun 14, 2008, 09:59 AM Aldric was once just a breeder of horses, a better in the tournements, a man who combed the '7000 hoove' tracks with his friends and traded grain for horses, foals for grain. He traded pack horses for grain from gatherours, he traded with many and all.
One tournament he was competent in was the 'Staf'n'Spree' A small local forest (small, not a resource) is harvested for staffs. Then, forked staffs are planted in the ground while wooden rings are placed. The winner is the one with the most rings after the Judge Walkers, 3, reach the end of the track. He and his friends discovered to hit the rings in the center, they made saddles for the races. They had fun poking each other with the staffs.
Aldric was 14.
Then the raids came. The first came from a village escaping an expanding tribe from the south. Using similar staffs, they impedded stones and came in, desperate to capture the grain the people gathered and horses the few elite breeded. They succeeded in sacking the guard tower, but once an escapee told of the sharp stone, Aldric, Torkezan, and Jorz. Champions of the 'Staf'n'Spree' The charged the dozens of raiders and routed them. They realized the power of their mounts, and when they heard of the conquering armies that eat their victims, they bounded a pact to unite all horse riders. To be powerful, to resist any and all attacks.
Now 20, Aldric became the first representative of Horse Breeding, he know grain is important, and he knew where to get some...

The history of the Scholars is a long one. They were created as soon as the Dark Ages began and they tried to preserve as much knowlage as they could, for this was their purpose. Even the Scholars could not preserve everything and much was lost. The Scholars seek to regain all lost knowlage and relie on others to protect them. In return these nations are the first to hear of any breakthoughs that might occur. They are a driving force in advancing mankind and learning from our mistakes.

thomas.berubeg Jul 03, 2008, 09:46 AM Update 2
In the years since Thor had last Orbited, the political layout of the gulf had changed a lot.
A wave of Cities and Expansion had occurred, with most civilization sporting at least two centers of population.
The Fishing Village of Targus, only one of many on the Imperial Coastline, became the first to have a population of over five hundred, Causing Imperial Bureaucrats to appoint it regional capital, home to the government administrators of the fishing villages.
Much further north, A Myamevalle exploration party, following the river north, encountered the first civilized people outside the Gulf Cultural region. (Though considering the Empire and the Myamevalle gulf people was a small stretch, most scholars consider them to be culturally similar to the other Gulf People.) The Myamevalle explorers, nearly dead of starvation, and exhaustion, were saved, in the middle of an Unforgiving blizzard by a foraging party of a people calling themselves the scholars.
As the explorers recuperated, they learned much about their saviors. Their order had been founded at the end of the dark days, by an association of international scholars, here in the (Oos? What kind of name was that?) Those Scholars had attempted to save as many books and Works of art as possible. Since then, in their Old tech fortress, the Scholars and their descendants had worked diligently to restore and preserve old writing.
The explorers, though they were treated very well and learned of the Works of the Ancients, through plays and lectures put on by the Scholars themselves, they longed for their home on the banks of the River. At last, spring appeared and the explorers returned south, carrying with them gifts of copies of the works of the ancients… a group of Seven Books, portraying the awesome powers of some of the ancients, and a great war fought by a boy and some of his friends who could channel these powers against a powerful, nearly immortal foe who also had these great powers. These Books were enshrined in Cincinna, and became the root of a group of worshippers, the Order of the Pheonix, taking their name from the books themselves. Throughout Myamevalle this worship spread, and they began to take the word elsewhere.
The People of Kasharan contented themselves with Expansion.
The People of Ironica and the Cove worked to the same Goal, though unconsciously: Both sought the destruction of the uncivilized people between their two empires.
The Cove Succeded beyond their wildest dreams. The whale people were assimilated completely, now supplying the cove with skilled navigators, a trait that the cove lacked, despite being skilled seafarers. The cove now turned its attentions towards the Baptums, and the Pirate King Himself began to devise the plans for the conquest and assimilation of this highly superstitious people.
Their Cousins, the Echijanian people had finally annexed the entire southern island, and had built a city on the northern Island. This City, though now only a rough frontier outpost was sure to become a center for trade, and a place from which to plan the conquest of the northern island.
The Storm that would, in the far north, strand a party of explorers and cause the meeting of two people began in the south of the gulf. It gathered strength and speed, and became truly a Device of the Gods, and though it lost some as it crossed the Echajin Islands, the storm once again picked up strength and power before striking the Dominion. As it raged above The Dominion, On a hill the east of Fazure, an old Metal tower, which legend said once carried light to the homes of the ancients, was struck repeatedly with lightning. The plant growth on the tower ignited, and, despite the battering rain, the Entire hill became a Raging Inferno. Weeks after the storm abated, Dominion Surveyors decided that the hill would be a perfect location for a city, as it was on the ocean, and able to protect Fazure from any attack, as well as regulate trade, and be fertile. In a moment of Humor, the Surveyors name the Hill, and therefore the city, Char.
The Gallardorian People expanded outwards, and founded the city of Conosso to the south of its existing cities.
The Singordians, always full of debauchery and cruelty, lost land to the incensed barbarians.
This Period of time saw not only the contact with the Scholars, but also with the plains people. A Galladorian Hunter was the first Gulf Person to encounter these new peoples. His wandering following prey soon took him far northwest from his people… and he preferred it that way. He disliked the bustle of the towns, and he viewed the outskirt farmers as Provinicial and Boorish. Hunting gave him solitude, and he could think. He was stalking a herd of deer, when, while following them, he broke from the forest. So used was he to the closeness if the trees that was so common throughout the gulf, that he swayed with shock. He gazed around at the open grass, the rolling hills. And in the distance, saw it. A plume of Smoke. Surely people couldn’t live out in the open like this? What did they live in? What did they use for shelter and food? Curious, the Hunter traveled toward the Smoke… the journey took days, and by the time he located the fire, the people who had made it were long gone… but enough was left there to intrigue the Hunter… What could have made those strange tracks? And what was the purpose of the strange, pointed, wooden shaft lying on the ground?
Curious, the hunter explored the plains, sleeping on the soft grass. One morning, the Hunter Came across a House, abandoned yes, but undeniably a house, made of Dirt blocks and Grass.
The hunter traveled westwards for another day, and, coming over a hill, saw it beneath him… a huge city made of Dirt. and people riding on animals? That couldn’t be safe?
Techs:
Netting: This invention allows for greater fishing catches, allowing for larger coastal villages. Netting allows the creation of fishing villages, which cost only 3 gpt and provide 1 gpt, but must be very near water. (requires trade) (7 tech points)
Archery: the Hunter that discovered the Herders of Ariskan brought back a wonderous military invention: a piece of wood and rope that launched another piece of wood farther and stronger than anyone could throw it. (provides +10 percent to defense) (4 tech points)

The13thRonin Jul 03, 2008, 09:58 AM Map isn't updated yet... there are just a few correction to be made.
Have you updated the main pages stats?
thomas.berubeg Jul 03, 2008, 10:00 AM Yes, though you might want tocheck i didn't make mistakes...
Terrance888 Jul 03, 2008, 10:04 AM A few questions: Do you start with a city?
Also, I spend 5 on Tech points and agriculture is 4 tech points. So why did you give me a free tech point? Or is it an accident?
BTW: great update, i'd like to see the face of the hunter when he saw the city!
EDIT: I believe in the power of Free Tp now!
The13thRonin Jul 03, 2008, 10:04 AM My GPT is disappointingly low considering I have been quite successful (to understate my progress) at capturing slaves and expanding my territory. I assimilated an entire nation in one turn and I'm one of the economically weakest nations?
Terrance888 Jul 03, 2008, 10:07 AM My GPT is disappointingly low considering I have been quite successful (to understate my progress) at capturing slaves and expanding my territory. I assimilated an entire nation in one turn and I'm one of the economically weakest nations?
Other than me... but think! Establish Fishing villages/Pirate Harbors/Coves!
The13thRonin Jul 03, 2008, 10:10 AM Other than me... but think! Establish Fishing villages/Pirate Harbors/Coves!
I think the economic viability of a nation supported by slaves and loot is being currently underestimated. Just because The Cove is not populated by farmers or scholars makes us no less productive, especially considering the huge amount of slaves gained in the past few years and the period. The Cove's economy should be booming .
thomas.berubeg Jul 03, 2008, 10:15 AM I didn't really think of a mechanic to allow for Economic growth through conquest... I'll try to think of one, or if you have suggest...
maybe successful conquests give you gold?
Terrance888 Jul 03, 2008, 10:22 AM Well, first, I think half of treasury, if there are any, are captured rounded up.
Then, If the nation/tribe/land is utterlly destroyed and is not occupied, you get a random gold to your bank due to razing/uttur destruction and you capture all the valuables.
If you occupy the land, you'll get some Gold (not Gpt!) from the land, you should. But less than utter destruction but with a chance of GPT gains.
The13thRonin Jul 03, 2008, 10:26 AM I didn't really think of a mechanic to allow for Economic growth through conquest... I'll try to think of one, or if you have suggest...
maybe successful conquests give you gold?
I like the idea of successful conquest giving you gold but I believe slaves should raise the GPT of the economy just like working agriculture or manufacturing. When you think about it in the contexts of the game slaves are a vital drive behind an evil or morally skewed nations development. Historically many nations (including America) were in part, built upon the backs of slaves (as sad as that fact may be, I do not agree with slavery in the real world). I'm also not seeing any effects upon my regimental army size when I asked for slaves to be offered voluntary military service with the ultimate incentive of freedom. I just feel kind of cheated knowing that all in all I have had a very successful few turns but because I didn't take the 'right' path or the 'correct' path the best I can hope for is becoming a minor barbarian nation.
If you implement any such changes I strongly plead you to compensate my nation to its rightful position as a powerful entity worthy of standing among the peaceful civilizations.
Stuck in Pi Jul 03, 2008, 10:48 AM Ronin, there's a reason this is called a lazy-NES. If you want that kind of complexity, go to the NES forums.
Stuck in Pi Jul 03, 2008, 10:48 AM EDIT: double post...
The13thRonin Jul 03, 2008, 10:57 AM Ronin, there's a reason this is called a lazy-NES. If you want that kind of complexity, go to the NES forums.
Exactly, it shouldn't be bound by strict rules but rather by common sense and common sense stipulates that you don't get punished in production for being a militaristic nation. Especially if you raid for slaves and loot in a period that supports such tactics .
Terrance888 Jul 03, 2008, 10:59 AM I say there should be a 'slave' tech. Also, 1/2 gold for every soldier present at the destruction of a group of people. As 'Loot'
The13thRonin Jul 03, 2008, 11:03 AM I say there should be a 'slave' tech. Also, 1/2 gold for every soldier present at the destruction of a group of people. As 'Loot'
Perhaps in addition to your loot mechanism we could have a culminating slave resource which is only granted from aggressive expansion when specified under by individual players boosting the economy which slowly dries up unless a steady supply of conflict is maintained?
Backwards Logic Jul 03, 2008, 11:31 AM Hey thomas, my GPT should be 9 (10 in 1) because of my second city. Thanks
mythmonster2 Jul 03, 2008, 11:35 AM Hey, isn't netting kind of useless? It costs 3 gpt but only gives 1 GPT??? Did you mean 3 gold?
thomas.berubeg Jul 03, 2008, 12:37 PM I meant three gold.
Ronin... I'm implementing that for next update, and you will be compenstaed.
choxorn Jul 03, 2008, 12:43 PM I DEMAND THE MAP BE UPDATED!
a
mythmonster2 Jul 03, 2008, 04:43 PM Hey, I sent him the new map. It's his fault.
The13thRonin Jul 03, 2008, 05:34 PM I meant three gold.
Ronin... I'm implementing that for next update, and you will be compenstaed.
Thank you thomas.berubeg.
Any word on the map update?
thomas.berubeg Jul 03, 2008, 09:37 PM :mischief:
I was at a friends house... Tomorrow, i promise.
merciary Jul 04, 2008, 07:23 AM Edit: Nothing to see here, move along
thomas.berubeg Jul 05, 2008, 09:47 AM Map updated
mythmonster2 Jul 07, 2008, 05:24 PM Erm, Thomas, it appears we have a conflict. On the map, I wrote my other city as Ilesia, but its actually Elipsie. Can you change the stats to Ilesia? Thanks.
thomas.berubeg Jul 07, 2008, 05:28 PM Sure... No problem
thomas.berubeg Jul 07, 2008, 05:42 PM I have created a new resource Gained by combat.
Slaves: last two turns, give +5 gpt, and cause a very small chance of revolt.
Ronin, you have two slave resources.
choxorn Jul 07, 2008, 06:08 PM Why didn't I get any land?
thomas.berubeg Jul 08, 2008, 07:23 AM you did, you did!
Didn't he, mythmonster?
mythmonster2 Jul 08, 2008, 10:27 AM Yeah you did, you expanded northwards.
choxorn Jul 08, 2008, 11:31 AM I also attacked barbarians. I don't have any of their land.
Pinman Jul 09, 2008, 02:17 PM I'm sorry thomas, but I think the introduction of the slave resource is rather unfair.
The obvious reason is that it wasn't present from that start, but theres also the fact that I think its totally unbalanced.
mythmonster2 Jul 09, 2008, 02:22 PM Aye, especially for people with noone to conquer nearby. *coughcough* He'll have something like 15 GPT while most of us would have around 10.
merciary Jul 09, 2008, 02:52 PM Yeah, possibly make it a tech that you gain "some" gold every time you attack but not a resource that just keeps growing.
Stuck in Pi Jul 09, 2008, 04:47 PM I agree with the above. Those of us who have no one to attack are screwed, as are those who don't feel like fighting. Maybe add it. Maybe. But nerf it heavily if you do.
thomas.berubeg Jul 09, 2008, 05:31 PM What do you all suggest... i'mh appy to try to balance everything. (ronin, don't send orders until this is all figured out)
edit: slaves increas GPT by 3 until they die?
Pinman Jul 09, 2008, 05:42 PM I think perhaps slaves should grant + 2 GPT, if they are going to be given out so freely. Cities should remain gthe main source of income at this stage.
thomas.berubeg Jul 09, 2008, 05:46 PM but the thing is, cities are permanent.
however, slaves last only two turns...
Pinman Jul 09, 2008, 05:48 PM However, at this stage in the game, that is fairly critical. Besides, they really weren't supposed to be present in the first place, not without a tech or something.
3 GPT would be alright, if it wasn't retroactive and it came with a tech. Ronin knew the rules when he decided to build up his military, a new rule shouldn't be instituted that disadvantages others.
Backwards Logic Jul 09, 2008, 06:01 PM I agree that the slave tech is currently overpowered. And especially considering the rules state at this stage of the game only two additional cities can be built - something I've already maxed out (unless this too gets changed). So I propose that the city limit cap gets lifted, while the slave resources give +3 GPT for 2 turns. This way, the ruler can choose how his economy expands - peacefully or by the sword.
choxorn Jul 09, 2008, 06:36 PM I still want to know why my troops didn't attack the barbarians...
The13thRonin Jul 10, 2008, 01:53 AM I also agree that the slave tech is overpowered. By all means nerf it to 3GPT.
But I disagree with removing it or like I stated before. There will be no incentive to conquer instead of to build and research. Surely all should be viable options.
thomas.berubeg Jul 10, 2008, 07:18 AM @backwards Logic: you can still build villages... and the cap is going to start going up soon.
merciary Jul 11, 2008, 09:10 PM Just a heads up I will be gone from the 13th to the 23rd. I'm going to be on vacation in Italy so I'm not sure of my ability to reach a computer.
thomas.berubeg Jul 11, 2008, 09:13 PM Send me a gerneal overview of what you'de like your nation to focus on for that period.
thomas.berubeg Jul 11, 2008, 09:14 PM Choxorn: I'll expand you a bit further this turn, to make up for last turn...
choxorn Jul 11, 2008, 09:14 PM EDIT: X-post which answered my question.
thomas.berubeg Jul 14, 2008, 09:07 AM I need orders...
Pinman Jul 14, 2008, 10:36 AM I'll send you orders today thomas, but i'm still iffy on your adding something like this mid-game.
Terrance888 Jul 14, 2008, 10:43 AM Sent! I'm gona use the new thing!
thomas.berubeg Jul 14, 2008, 11:16 AM Pinman... I see it as being fair, and a logical addition... (fair, because it is something that Ronin has been ordering in every set of orders he sent...)
thomas.berubeg Jul 23, 2008, 08:58 AM 24 hour mark for orders.
thomas.berubeg Jul 24, 2008, 10:58 AM I am a Moron!
I was all set to start to right up the update... but (i'm in canada right now) i reallized i forgot to send myself all my notes...
so, while the update will get done... it means it will take a bit longer than i expected... so today or tomorrow, but later.
mythmonster2 Jul 24, 2008, 12:17 PM And the map? Or can you do it now?
thomas.berubeg Jul 24, 2008, 01:34 PM I'll esnd you everything as soon as i can.
merciary Jul 25, 2008, 07:31 AM I'm back from Italy
taillesskangaru Jul 25, 2008, 08:36 AM Please NPC me for this turn. Thanks.
thomas.berubeg Jul 25, 2008, 09:20 AM will do :)
The13thRonin Jul 25, 2008, 11:14 PM Where's the update?
mythmonster2 Jul 25, 2008, 11:18 PM He sent me what everyone did, he just didn't send me the map itself.
thomas.berubeg Jul 26, 2008, 07:53 PM mythmonster, can't you use the same map as last time?
thomas.berubeg Jul 28, 2008, 08:17 AM mythmonster... see above, please
mythmonster2 Jul 28, 2008, 10:00 AM Sorry, my internet was screwed. And I lost the map.
thomas.berubeg Jul 28, 2008, 11:49 AM then it'll have to wait until i'm home tomorrow...
mythmonster2 Jul 30, 2008, 01:29 PM Hey guys. I'm sorry, but I got a time crunch and can no longer play this game or make the map. Sorry, thomas, you'll need a new person.
thomas.berubeg Jul 31, 2008, 05:16 PM I apologize...
my internet died, and i only just now managed to fix it...
anyone want to do that map?
@mythmonster... too bad  good luck, and i hope you come back eventually...
Abaddon Jul 31, 2008, 07:01 PM Whats happened to this?
I don't show for months.. and seemingly nothings happened..
choxorn Jul 31, 2008, 07:29 PM Nothing was ever here. Really.
thomas.berubeg Jul 31, 2008, 07:30 PM it's a mixtureof me being lazy, me traveling, me not being able to do maps, and yeah, me all around...
but it is not dead!
Abaddon Jul 31, 2008, 07:49 PM Leave ye NES'er, before we are forced to banish you from LazyNES's forever.
Poo to you!
I'm in this LzNES.. i can ask why it isnt seeming progressing!
choxorn Jul 31, 2008, 08:39 PM I don't have any idea what you're talking about. :mischief:
Terrance888 Jul 31, 2008, 08:44 PM well, I didn't send orders for RFMk... (gets covered in poo by other players.)
thomas.berubeg Aug 02, 2008, 09:19 PM sorry, i<ve had a busy last few weeks, traveling and family and all...
i<ll try to be more consistent, and work on a stricter schedul next week.
thomas.berubeg Aug 08, 2008, 02:50 PM Know what?
Jobs and Summer reading sucks!
choxorn Sep 01, 2008, 12:52 PM *cough* Update? *cough*
Vertinari118 Sep 01, 2008, 02:14 PM I believe this is dead as a dodo.
thomas.berubeg Sep 01, 2008, 03:15 PM Yeah... this isn't nearly so fun without a map... and i had no way to edit a map... so, sorry, I'll tr restarting this when i buy my laptop.
Vertinari118 Sep 01, 2008, 03:25 PM When are you going to get this new laptop? I could do the map but I only have paint and I don't want to download anthing, that's what killed my old laptop.
mythmonster2 Sep 01, 2008, 03:40 PM I used Paint. It was good.
thomas.berubeg Sep 01, 2008, 07:19 PM i used paint too, except for the unexplored Filter...
I'm getting this laptop as soona s i scrounge up the money...
choxorn Sep 01, 2008, 07:31 PM I suppose the game is dead until then.
Hey, everyone, who wants to join RFMK 3? :)
Vertinari118 Sep 01, 2008, 07:36 PM Fine in order to keep this alive I will do the map to the best of my abilities. What needs doing?
thomas.berubeg Sep 01, 2008, 07:40 PM I have to recompile my stuff...
do you guys mind if we hold this off until i'm done with my NOTW? also... join that, if you'de like...
Vertinari118 Sep 01, 2008, 07:50 PM Cool with me and I will take a look.
