View Full Version : List of City Names
mordhiem Jul 23, 2002, 07:02 AM I, as the Domestic Advisor, hereby announce Anarchywrksbst as the first and only citizen who will hold the position 'Keeper of the City Names'. His task will be to collect all the suggestions for names, use his immense knowledge to judge which ones are worthy of use and produce the City List which we will use in this game.
Now, let the spouting of names begin!
How about Mordhemia?
duke o' york Jul 23, 2002, 07:44 AM I'd be keen to find out who the other civs are in the game before I start proposing city names. I know to avoid names that sound too Russian because they're in, but which other nations will have names that sound similar to ours? I'd like Jorvik if we're playing against the French, but obviously if the Vikings are in the game then it'd be dumb to name one of our cities afrter one of theirs.
anarchywrksbest Jul 23, 2002, 12:35 PM Thank you Morheim sire, I take up this post with the aim of collecting a comprehesive list of names that will make are Empire a nice sounding place to live.
Firstly at the time I am writing this post the poll to decide the capital is drawn at 13 votes each. I will begin the list once this battle is decided. The second point is that both Regia Civitas and Elysium are obviuosly very popelar choices so I was thinking that are second city could be named after the runner-up. Post your views.
The order of the initial cities would be named after the following people.
Regia Civitas (Capital) BUILT
ThunderFalls ;) BUILT
Elysium NEXT
President - New Dellville
Vice-President - Marl Downs
Domestic Advisor - ?????
Military Advisor - Reneaux
Foreign Minister - Civvium
Science Advisor - ?????
Deputy Domestic Advisor - Grand Ronville
Deputy Military Advisor - Myarsatoria
Deputy Foreign Minister - Gabba Gabba
Deputy Science Advisor - ?????
Keeper of the City Names - Fort Anarchy
Governors (in order they register)
When this list is used up and no new officials have been appointed then citizens will be used in the order they registered for the game.
I ask all the officials listed above to post there suggestions for the city names that will be named after them. Hope this is agreeable with the general population??
Dell19 Jul 24, 2002, 03:19 AM I like the idea of naming our second city after the runner up from the capital poll. Then I'll probably name cities after officals.
kmad Jul 24, 2002, 04:07 AM kmadopolis
heliogabalus Jul 24, 2002, 08:13 AM If, at one time, we have more cities than citizens yearning to be honored, I propose to name some cities after the candidates for capital name in the first poll, for example Metropolis or the half-seriously proposed Crater Lake.
anarchywrksbest Jul 24, 2002, 11:31 AM Thanks for the suggestions but what I was really looking for was your suggestion for the name of your city so i can make the list.
Kmad has the idea although I am not sure he is one of the officials listed?
Kev Jul 24, 2002, 12:50 PM I'd like a more military sounding name like Kev's Watch or Kev's Stand or Kev's Pike or something like that. Makes it sound like I did something heroic.
Of course, in the list of things here my namesake will be like the 15th city in our nation. LOL
anarchywrksbest Jul 24, 2002, 12:54 PM  Well Kev you should have run for office! I hope you didn't notice that I have slipped my office in the list above the Governors ;)
Leowind Jul 24, 2002, 12:59 PM Be a long time before it gets built, but when we get around to naming for ordinary citizens, I'd like Neuma (as mentioned elsewhere; and still looking for an answer to what connection that name has to me  )
mordhiem Jul 24, 2002, 01:45 PM Originally posted by Leowind

Well, there is a little known R&B band called Neuma and I think there is a company called Neuma Tech or something simmilar. I guess that these have nothing to do with it though.
starlifter Jul 24, 2002, 02:27 PM Well, Keeper of the List, it seems governors ain't go no respect nowadays, eh? ;)
I'll contribute Starlifterville for now.
Zwelgje Jul 24, 2002, 02:51 PM It's a tough choice you are forcing us to make...I'll choose:
Civvium.
Serutan Jul 24, 2002, 08:06 PM I submit Serutanland, if it gets that far...
bigfatron Jul 25, 2002, 01:46 AM Grand Ronville
pronounced with a distinct french accent:egypt:
kmad Jul 25, 2002, 01:59 AM I just want my crappy little city! I don't even have to control it
heliogabalus Jul 25, 2002, 04:36 AM Gabba Gabba does it for me...
Leowind Jul 25, 2002, 12:27 PM Originally posted by mordhiem

 you would be correct; neither of those things have anything to do with it. But keep trying :)
anarchywrksbest Jul 25, 2002, 12:29 PM "Neuma Tech" thats quite clever ;) Neumatic
You'll have to give us a clue Leowind......

You just gave yourself a clue ;)
It relates to my usename (sort of)
Dell19 Jul 26, 2002, 02:14 AM I'll probably name my city, New Dellville.
Ren Jul 26, 2002, 03:02 AM After much consideration, I have decided to go with Reneaux :)
Jayne Sep 27, 2002, 06:30 AM I'd like to add 'Royal Jaynia Spa' to the list.
duke o' york Sep 27, 2002, 07:06 AM Oh! Are you from RLS or nearby then? :)
Jayne Sep 27, 2002, 07:17 AM RLS is correct!! :)
Jayne Sep 29, 2002, 07:03 AM My chosen name is too long, so I'll change it to 'Castle Jayne'
Octavian X Sep 29, 2002, 02:08 PM I guess that leaves me, the vice president. I'll chose 'Octavia's Point'
GaryNemo Sep 29, 2002, 04:03 PM As one of my last official acts as NUF's Term 2 Domestic Advisor, I would like to post a poll to name the new M2 City. However, inspecting the lists below, I find there are very few choices from the people of the Term 2 Government. Please post and clarify, and I will put together something for tomorrow morning. Right now we have Mordhiemia, Ebor, then Castle Jayne and older choices such as Grand Ronville ...
For everyone to get their city name - we need many new cities!

There is a question in my mind on the relative importance of a prior Deputy vs a Current Deputy. Perhaps the order of Deputies should be switched. That is, perhaps prior Term Deputies come before even older Deputies, and that Current Term Deputies must wait until next Term for their "Top" slot above other Deputies... Comments?
duke o' york Sep 30, 2002, 02:29 AM I wouldn't worry about the previous deputies for the government positions for the time being. It's not as if we've got tonnes of people to choose from. The next city should be Castle Jayne and then Octavia's Point, for the new president and deputy (also previous deputy). Then we can sort them out as each one comes up. We shall build a lot of cities so we'll all get to name one at least. I'm not bothered about when or even if I get a city and I'm sure that others aren't too worried. Mind you, I haven't noticed that Thunderfall fellow posting here too often. ;)
Leowind Oct 03, 2002, 09:32 AM Elsewhere in this very thread I requested the city name Neuma, so I'm not sure why that is not listed by my name in your list  (Just make sure it is a good trade e.g. science city when you found it ;) )
duke o' york Oct 03, 2002, 09:43 AM Hey! Are you feeling better than Leo? :goodjob:
We definitely needed your abacus this afternoon when we were trying to calculate how quickly we can finish the Colossus after Duke warned us the Indians would be nearly finished.
Jayne Oct 09, 2002, 02:33 AM We are fast running out of names. Please post more suggestions, particularly those in government. The next 3 I have are Octavia's Point, Nemo's Way and Neuma.
duke o' york Oct 09, 2002, 03:24 AM Hasn't Gary already got one city named after him?
Besides, it's Octavian X's birthday today so we should name the next city after him! :goodjob:
:bday:
GaryNemo Oct 09, 2002, 05:09 AM Yes I do, but that was Last Month's City. I have been reelected. Besides, who but me would want a skimpy little Filler as their namesake? F2 could be Nemo's Way. For F3, I suggest Nemo's Forest! Who else wants it?
Jayne is quite right. Ainwood could come forward. We do have loads of old names, Gabba Gabba sounds good.
Jayne Oct 09, 2002, 05:58 AM I've got about 5 settlers almost ready so we need lots of names for lots of cities! If I don't have enough I'll just name them all after Princess Lucy!!!!!!
:queen:
StevieP Oct 09, 2002, 06:01 AM Can I suggest "Bedfont Lakes". I've always liked that name, just rolls off the tongue.
I know I'm not in goverment, but you wanted suggestions.
Jayne Oct 09, 2002, 06:15 AM That's ok. You're deputy newspaper person and everyone should get a name eventually!
duke o' york Oct 09, 2002, 06:43 AM I thought we were getting some turns today, but maybe they'll be tonight instead. As long as Princess Lucy keeps an eye on the spaceship then we'll be all right. To be quite honest, I don't care what the cities are called just as long as we have the names ready before they are founded. I have trouble sometimes following which cities are M1, F3 and H21. :crazyeye:
It also seems a bit strange that we will get several cities named after each person. Some people haven't got one yet and Gary wants another! In case anyone has forgotten, that lucky *%$&!@ ainwood has gone for a week in Egypt so I wouldn't wait for him to name a city just yet.
Jayne Oct 14, 2002, 09:11 AM Princess Lucy has chosen 'Azkaban'!
Leowind Oct 14, 2002, 11:24 AM Just a reminder, I would like for Neuma to be a trade rich city. It seems destined for G2NE (or something like that) which I think is the city West of Mordheimia, which has mostly forest, although some ocean. I'll be happy wherever it is, of course, but I'd be content to wait for a good trade site, too.
GaryNemo Oct 14, 2002, 02:51 PM Term3 VP: Octavian X: Octavia's Point - M1 River Mouth built 650BC
T1 Deputy Foreign Minister: Heliogabalus: F2 - Gabba Gabba built 625BC
Term2 Military Advisor: ainwood : Name for Iron City ???
Term2 Science Advisor: Leowind : Neuma - Wants G2NE
The G2NE Site is Pure Green (free shield) adjacent to 3 Forest,
total of 9 Green including 2 River, 5 Ocean, shares 2 w Mordhiemia.
I withdraw "Nemo's Way" - it's Gabba Gabba now and forever more!
Duke, may we consider naming F3 Nautilus? What about these others?
Princess Lucy has chosen 'Azkaban' (Oct 14, 2002?)
StevieP, Newspaper Deputy: Bedfont Lakes (Oct 9, 2002?)
We have Iron City coming up, suggest Jayne names it that for now...
And maybe F3 Filler, use generic name, maybe we'll irrigate...
And G2NE, shall we name it Neuma without a poll?
Then the North Whale City, seems far future
Maybe River City, needs exact site etc
duke o' york, what are candidate names? Nautilus? Azkaban? Bedfont Lakes? And Ren Mordhiem Civ1 and myself may be due another name, eh? What about Philosopher12? He's AWOL.
Comments, anyone?
GaryNemo Oct 15, 2002, 07:13 AM ainwood, we really need your chosen name. I've been thinking ... IronWood ?
duke o' york Oct 15, 2002, 07:53 AM I thought that Princess Lucy was a bit young for Harry Potter books. Maybe the queen is fond of boy wizard adventures. ;)
I'm not sure about Philosopher12 as he seems to visit for short bursts and then disappears again for ages. I haven't had as much CFC time as usual recently but he's hardly ever here.
Just set up the names you want Gary. All our cities will have to be named (did I mention that I want my city called Ulundi?;)) anyway but we can discuss whether or not we want to rename captured cities when we get the chance to actually capture some.
Jayne Oct 15, 2002, 08:08 AM Lucy and I have read the first 2 books of Master Potter and the first 2 pages of 'Azkaban'. They are strangely addictive!!
heliogabalus Oct 15, 2002, 08:16 AM And yet you can restrain yourself from reading on? Or is Azkaban the bed lecture and has been started only two days ago?
PS: I hope (for myself, since I've read the first 3 books with some interest, and for you, my sister and all the other Potterites out there) that Lucy won't have come of age before the last Harry is out. Seems like Ms. (Mrs.?) Rowling is more occupied with getting a nice well-rounded number of children at the moment than with the saga.
Jayne Oct 15, 2002, 08:26 AM We just started it yesterday, but Lucy was more interested in trying to eat the book than read it so we stopped. I must admit, Lucy didn't get to hear the end of Chamber of Secrets becuase I was too keen to finish it! Aren't I a cruel mother?!!! ;) (I did tell her what happened at the end though!)
heliogabalus Oct 15, 2002, 09:23 AM It must be awfully hard still continuing to read aloud and slowly if you are really interested in the book yourself...
But we are getting off-topic here. Reproach us, mods, o please do!
"Or shall I taunt you a second time?"
- edit: O how I yearn to see which colour is currently en vogue for mod warnings. Maybe a soft ochre. Combined with DoY's purple that would be a blessing for my eyes ;) endedit -

I wish you'd asked the deputy mods to reproach you too! Shucks, I'll just have to wait until Duke has finished with you. :(
You are right though - Harry Potter isn't really on-topic for this discussion so suggest some names that we can use for cities or suffer the wrath of the Duke of Marlbrough!
I've mentioned mine already, but I'll keep giving you some more for the hell of it:
Ebor, Eboracum, Jorvik (not allowed with those damned Vikings! Kill them!), York to start off with. :)
After that then I'm not sure. But surely four is enough!
Leowind Oct 15, 2002, 09:54 AM How about Hogwarts, Privet....Oh, can't think of any others at the moment. ;) I'll have to get my daughter to suggest a few. She has all four books, the movie, every trailer for both movies, and any shred of info about Daniel Radcliffe from the web completely memorized.
Can you say "obsessed?" (hey, she's twleve; comes with the territory)
note to the Dukes: I did suggest city names in this thread, so *technically* it is still on-topic, but I am currently slapping my own hand for being such a bad boy anyway. :spank: ;)
heliogabalus Oct 15, 2002, 09:58 AM I wish you'd asked the deputy mods to reproach you too! Shucks, I'll just have to wait until Duke has finished with you.
I'm sorry, Duke, I meant to imply deputy mods as well! Wonder if your quote stays purple. And how DO you manage to include smilies in quotes?
And now for something more Demo Game related:
Do you mean we should suggest city names, relating to us or just out of the blue, for "emergency cases" like a flood of settlers or a large number of conquered Viking settlements? I would have thought that we have a number of Demo Gamers yet who do not have a city named for themselves yet, including some present(?)/ former ministers.
I'll throw in some suggestions anyway:
(http://dir.yahoo.com/Regional/Countries/United_Kingdom/Wales/Cities_and_Towns/ is a valuable source)
*Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant
*Llangammarch Wells
*Llanfairpwllgwyngyll
+Beddgelert
Blaenau Ffestiniog
Morfa Nefyn
Pontypool
Deeside
Colwyn Bay
Connah's Quay
Tal-y-bont
Waunarlwydd
* Apart from the L-ones (a bit too long) they sound really good to me.
+ (if it were German, it would roughly translate to "Bed having been emptied)[COLOR=deeppink][COLOR=deeppink]
GaryNemo Oct 15, 2002, 11:31 AM Well, the Duke has come up with ... York.
And we haven't heard from ainwood, MonkE, Serutan. Our Governors are surely part of the Current Government.
heliogabalus Oct 15, 2002, 11:37 AM > Well, the Duke has come up with ... York.
Wow. How did he think of that? And what has it got to do with his username?
> Our Governors are surely part of the Current Government.
So it's them three who are governing our current provinces? IIRC, the drawing of provincial borders has been done in this term of office, so for next term we will have elections for governors (well, doh)!
MonkE Oct 17, 2002, 07:05 AM I'll suggest the name Monks Towne, for now (preferably not for a filler city!).
heliogabalus Oct 17, 2002, 09:08 AM To clarify: The Welsh names I suggested a few posts up are proposed in earnest. I started out searching for long and convoluted place names for joking purposes (the Ll... ones).
Most of the place names I found I really liked, though, and therefore included them. If we are ever through with naming cities after participants or if there are sites that no one wants to attach his name to, we can take one of the Welsh sites.
Jayne Oct 17, 2002, 09:11 AM I know someone who lives in Waunarlwydd, so I quite like that one!
heliogabalus Oct 17, 2002, 09:38 AM Are these cities all decently sized (10000+ inhabitants), or are they little hamlets of 50 people, all of them related?
duke o' york Oct 17, 2002, 09:50 AM I don't think any of those places qualifies as a city to be honest. I'm sure they're all towns, some larger than others, but nowhere near the Civ 2 size towns. :)
Anyway, getting back on-topic....... ;)
Jayne Oct 17, 2002, 09:52 AM I think Waunarlwydd is just a small village on the edge of Swansea (city). Colwyn Bay is quite big. Blaenau Ffestiniogg ,iirc, is not much more than a train station up Mount Snowden.
heliogabalus Oct 17, 2002, 10:10 AM But do you like those city names, people? Our queen has expressed she likes at least one of them [HINT] [HINT].
Elsaak Oct 17, 2002, 02:24 PM I know it's not my job of proposing city names, but haven't take into consideration that we should change initial letters of our cities (then, it's easier to find then by using "Goto" fonction...)
If some of you like Alsace, local names usualy used are :
Hipsheim, Ingxwiller, Zaamatten
And what about writing the name of our capital in CAPITAL LETTERS ?
Elsaak Oct 17, 2002, 02:33 PM I know it's not my job, but is it silly my remarque ? :
it could be interesting of taking into considaration the initial of our cities. If we give to each city a different inital, then it's easy for using the "Goto" fonction...
if some of U like Alsace and his plains and montains, names usualy used here are :
Hipsheim, Zaamatten, Ingouxwiller, Wirh
and what about writing the name of our capital in CAPITAL LETTERS ?
duke o' york Oct 18, 2002, 01:41 AM I hope that we won't be using the GoTo function for anything other than working out where to build the road link between our cities for the best trade boost. I don't trust it at all and it is rubbish at trying to find its way around corners. Even if the whole of our continent was railroaded then I doubt you could use GoTo to move between Civvium and Marl Downs. It would just get stuck by RC and go no further. In fact, I'd like to be able to have a stack movement like in Civ 3. I get a bit sick of moving 15 engineers in a big pile after they've grasslanded the swamp, roaded it and farmed.
I do like the idea of capitalising the capital. :D It wouldn't add much to the game to be honest, but would help any visiting noobs work out our triumphant march across the provinces.

GaryNemo Oct 24, 2002, 08:10 AM We soon come to the question of naming protocol.
Which names have priority?
Current Government, advisor's who have already named one city?
Past Deputies, always welcome as additional choices?
Odd names proposed above: Danderfluff, Hogwarts, Morfa Nefyn, Hipsheim et al? Princess Lucy?
My apology to our fine duke: Ebor or Eboracum, your choice. You could have a fine new Chryshe city, with either of these names. Shall I submit both for popular choice at the next opportunity?
Elsaak Oct 24, 2002, 08:29 AM I like Ebor ;
but it would be better for an coastal city (sound like 'harbour').
Hipsheim is a smalll real village, founded in 1202 by a Scott Prince named Ludan. We commemorated last month the 800th year of the church. It was crush in 1366 by Barbs.
duke o' york Oct 24, 2002, 08:38 AM The answer to this conundrum is simple: our monarch of the moment has the right to award names as s/he sees fit, preferably from the choice given above.
I'd like to see less bureaucracy with regard to naming our cities and allow the allow the ruler to exercise royal privilege. As long as the ruler doesn't just name cities on a whim each turn and doesn't change any of the existing city names then I reckon they should be given free rein. I can put up with a few cities named after whatever the ruler was watching on TV before they played. :)
In fact, I'm tempted to be as whimsical as I warned against before, and insist that the city named after me be simply the commodities it demands and supplies all stuck together. :D

Perhaps not please (IMHO -- My disclaimer). This is just going to generate confusion. And let's not even consider the concept of changing the city names when the suppy and demand changes.
We live in a complex world, let's not make even more so. :)
Jayne Nov 01, 2002, 05:07 AM The list of city names available is very very short so I urge the new Government to submit some more names! The laboratories at the new Ministry of Science have come up with "Enyaj"!
Rout Nov 01, 2002, 08:17 AM How about Routskilde for the relocated site captured from the vikings??
Ren Nov 08, 2002, 02:11 AM Of course, sticking New on the start of old names isn't a bad idea, eg. New Reneaux or New Renmark (Renmark was my namesake in the Civ2DG1) Maybe New Legendary City isn't such a great idea though
