Can anyone point me to a breakdown on how score is calculated? I tried searching the forum and gamefaqs but couldn't find one.
I just got my highest score ever :) 22,000 on Warlord, and would like to figure out whether my score would be higher if, for example, I tried again but won by Conquest in 1200 instead of 1900, or bumped the difficulty up a level and won by 1500, etc. Ideally without playing a 4 hour game for each experiment...
I am pretty sure I could have gotten at least 30,000 if I had sent transports after Wang Kon's island cities while he was reeling, and had not wasted dozens of turns researching technology and culture I never ended up using (Manhattan project, but I won before I needed to nuke anyone).

i ve got once a 96 000 a on small domination victory...and 55.000 on a conquest on standard....scoring system is flawed...because they say own 61% of map and if you play a small map animilate and restain a civ easily you cand drop setllers on the rest of the islands/continents and don't forget to set your water level to HIGH becauise it will be even few land mass.Diplomacy space race are bad because of this.
So if you want a high score go domination on a small map or even bigger if you can...
and remember domination > qonquest

I don't know an exact formula but iirc, the main factors are in-game score (which is based on population, land, wonders, and tech), finish date, and difficulty level.
Overall, you want to finish early, with the highest in-game score possible. The difficulty level will apply a multiplier to that score, adjusting down for levels below noble (the "standard" 1* modifier) and up for those above (up to, i think, 2* for deity).

If you get the Barbarian archer event in 3000BC, you are a Dan Quayle
