View Full Version : Annoyed from the start?
The Rook Jun 12, 2008, 05:46 PM I have just fired up a game with a fresh install of BTS+3.13+Bhurics+BUG 230. My leader is Elizabeth, and Brennus, my neighbour, is already annoyed with me! No tech trades, religion, or anything, and he is annoyed with a visible attitude score of 0. I am aware that the AI has a hidden attitude of -1 towards the player on Noble and higher, and Brennus has a natural base attitude of -1. However, a starting attitude of -2 isn't sufficiently low to cross the line of annoyed. How can this be right? I know that there is a Peace Weight modifier, but this only applies to AI interactions. This is the first time I have tried the BUG mod, but it is meant to have unaltered gameplay, so I assume this isn't an issue. Am I missing something out here? :(
Thanks
Diamondeye Jun 12, 2008, 05:52 PM Hmm. You say -1 inisibly from Noble+, could this be worse on higher difficulties? What diifculty are you playing?
And, are you stronger, on par, weaker, or much weaker than him on the Powergraph? This tends to means something aswell.
DMOC Jun 12, 2008, 06:08 PM You don't have Aggressive AI on by any chance? That gives Brennus an additional -2.
Genv [FP] Jun 12, 2008, 06:31 PM This is a bug - It fixes itself 10-20 turns after

I think they got rid of the initial negative modifier for aggressive AI in the new version. So I do not think that is it.
The Rook Jun 12, 2008, 07:32 PM Thanks for all of your responses.
I don't have aggressive AI turned on, so that won't be the problem.
@Diamondeye: The -1 modifier applies to every difficulty level above Noble. I don't "think" that the powergraph specifically affects attitude, but another look through the BTS Ref guide shows that apparently "rank" can affect attitude. As my rank got lower (it is very early, so rankings are fluctuating), Brennus's attitude changed from annoyed to cautious. So perhaps this is the answer?
Is it correct that <= -3 is the threshold for annoyed? If so, -1 level, -1 base, -1 rank(?), would be -3, and that would make sense of the situation.
@Genv: Do you have any links to the bug you refer? I couldn't find anything. Thanks.
pangu Jun 13, 2008, 03:15 AM I have seen the same thing with Monty as well. He always seem to be annoyed to see me when we first met. But I think after a few turns, he goes to cautious due to "+1 years of peace strengthen relations".
Diamondeye Jun 13, 2008, 12:13 PM The AI almost always start off better ranked than the human (on Monarch+ due to free archers at starts). Once this small start bonus loses importance (sometimes they have like 3 times your power initially), I think the rank matters less.

I don't think there's any hard rule for that. I've been +2 with Toku and he was still annoyed with me, while at the same time -2 with Mali and still cautious.
In any case, going back to your OP, Brennus is one of those that will be a bit reluctant to like you at the start. Not nearly as bad as many other leaders, but not nearly as good as others.
nbcman Jun 13, 2008, 02:44 PM Also, there is a very large difference in the relation factor between Brennus and Elizabeth. Brennus is 0 and Elizabeth is a 9 (on a scale of 0-10). The relation factor means that leaders with similar value are more likely to get along with each other, with very different value are more likely to hate each other. Since Brennus and Elizabeth are almost the worst case difference (Gandhi is a 10 on the relation factor), they will tend to dislike each other.

I think that the rank refers to the "score" in relation to all living civs. Brennus dislikes civs that have a score x places higher than him. I had some good luck at the very start, so my score was superficially high, Brennus was bottom. When I slipped down the score ranks (in a few turns after the AIs had settled some cities), Brennus changed from annoyed to cautious. By the time I climbed back up the rankings, Brennus had other positive modifiers, so the rank negative didn't affect his attitude. Of course, Brennus's "power" was obscenely higher than mine the whole time, but as far as I am aware, this does not affect attitude, although obviously it will affect how the AI behaves towards you.
@nbcman
Yes, you refer to "peace weight". However, this only affects AI to AI relations (fortunately).
