I've started playing civ 4 on my dad's computer, and one thing I've noticed is that I have a bad habit of focusing too much on improvements and neglecting my military force, and I wonder if it's something to do with my ADD. What can I do to overcome my limits when playing civ?

One thing you can do is try to specialize your cities more. Your strongest production cities should be producing the majority of your units, while your commerce and science cities should focus on the infrastructure multipliers. Specialization is an important step in learning this game. I generally have 2 or 3 cities that produce the bulk of my empires military units, and I send them around wherever they need to go, while my high commerce and science cities build stuff like Markets, Universities, and such.
There are a few buildings that belong in every city, IMHO, Granary, Forge, Barracks, maybe a couple others, but once those are up, if you have a lot of good hammer tiles, make units, if you have a lot of cottages and high commerce tiles, make Markets and such.

One thing that has really helped me is setting aside a couple cities for nothing but production. They build barracks, stables, +production buildings, but no focus on economy at all. Once the buildings are done its all units all the way. With all those units running around there's not much to do buy conquer somebody!
