View Full Version : Technical reasons behind the hesitation to move to Wii?

If the game was only available for PS3 and X-box I'd understand. The Wii isn't really in the same technical generation as those.

But the DS? Is the Wii that much weaker than the DS? But that's a handheld?

Please somebody explain...

Handheld is totally different from consoles. There is no point in trying to compare the two.

Basically if just wasn't worth it from them to have to invest the resources to remkae the game for the Wii, and have it come out 6 months later.

It wasn't as much as about the limits of the wii than the limits of Firaxis. They decide to drop the wii since it was the one most behind in development to be able to finish the others.

I believe Wii is weaker than DS - Take a good look at the games, most DS games look better!

Resources. To move the game to the Wii they need to do a different adaptation to make it work with the control, That's why they decide to put the project in stand by for wii. Probably Wii user will be able to play by the end of the year or later.

It wasn't about the controls but the art work. While PS3/360 has 512mb of ram the wii has only 88mb.

It was relativly easy for them to use the same graphics for the PS3 and XBox 360. To port to the Wii would take compleatly different graphics that would be lower polly and much simpler. The reason they could "port" the game to the DS is because the graphics they need to create for the DS are very very simple compared to those they need to create for a counsul, even the Wii.

Also, I believe (although am not positive) that the DS is slightly different game then the one of the PS3 and Xbox 360.

the ds version dosen't have the civpedia, it is possible that they can't fit the civpedia on the wii and felt that a console version without the civpedia would be a bad idea.

as others have mentioned it is properly easier/faster to create 2d graphics for the ds than to convert the current xbox/ps3 graphics to the wii and still having it look good.

another possibility is that quite a lot of the code would have to be redone for the wii.

Wii disks are dvd, so they have just as much space as the xbox 360.. Thus I don't buy the civlopedia being too big.. We can only speculate the reason(s) why they decided not to bring it to wii..

Technical limitations sound feasible, but then why no problem with the ds?

My guess is possibly a resolution issue.. Perhaps a business move.. Or even coming out with it later?

Um no we don't have to speculate as we already know the reason. As the developers have already spoke on it. The quote below combined with the Wii being 6 months behind is the reason it was canned.

The 360/PS3 have the same controls, the Wii has completely different controls, so programming the Wii would require a lot of extra work and would be time confusing, which would force the game to be delayed.

I've already made a thread about this.

Yeah, so have about a hundred other people, but that doesn't prevent more people from starting the same thread again, which will certainly happen.

Ever noticed there is a lot of cheap looking games that uses the wii-mote yet there aren't a lot of games yet to take advantage of wii hardware? (most that do are first party games) Thus making a game to shake the wii-mote around comes a dime a dozen yet art work that take advantage of wii hardware really costs time and money. This is why a lot of first generation wii games got ported PS2 graphics.

the reason has nothing to do with control schemes.

It is because the Wii version was already behind, and they didn't have the manpower to get it caught up. So they just put it on hold, until they either have the manpower(and decide it is worth it to start it up again), or decide to scrap it for good.

As for why it was behind, Dennis and Jason have both said that it was behind because they were trying to convert the 360/PS3 graphics to the Wii, and that was taking longer than they had expected.

As for whoever said the DS version didn't have a civilopedia...where'd you hear that? From what every single Firaxis employee has told us(including Jason, the project manager), it is exactly the same as the console versions, except for the graphics(which means civilopedia should be in it)
