View Full Version : In-Game Strategy Guides
alerum68 Jun 19, 2008, 08:48 AM The BUG Team is almost completed with a project that will add Strategy Guides from CFC to the in-game 'Pedia. Before we do this, we want to ask permission of the authors, and CFC to add this information in-game. As there are too many authors to ask individual, I am posting this thread in the hopes that if anyone has a problem with their Guide being included in this project, we request that you let us know, and all traces of any guide of yours that we add will be removed. All Authors will be given credit for the guide(s) they have written, and eventually will have their guide translated to all in-game languages. Here is a screenshot, using WoundKnight's Guide, showing what the addition will look like:

If you'd like your Guide added, or would like to create a guide to use in this Mod, please send us a line!
Thanks,
The BUG Team
r_rolo1 Jun 19, 2008, 09:03 AM A small question, alerum ( just passed by the BUG forum now )...
How are you going to update this? Autoupdate? Boring new BUG version each time you add a article? Nice modular structure ( I suppose this one is the better option... )
And in shameless self promo mode... read my sig, 2nd link :p Not yet finished though :(
alerum68 Jun 19, 2008, 04:13 PM We won't be able to update each time a new article is posted. What is more likely to happen will be that before an update, we will check articles to see if any new ones have been submitted. We are not taking from the forum, as there are to many good suggestions to make manageable, but any new additions to the official Guides will updated at that time.
And I'll get your article in there too.;) When you do post it, PLEASE don't do anything fancy with the HTML. Regular UTF-8 encoding, with BASIC HTML formatting is best.;) Any idea when it will be completed? With the release of BTS 3.17 it's going to be a while before we put out another release, so you have a while to get it in.
vicawoo Jun 19, 2008, 04:15 PM I want to see the one word davemcw's advanced high level strategy guide.
troytheface Jun 19, 2008, 04:18 PM if Attacko's articles are in there then great. Getting permission may cost money tho because they stronger then the others.
alerum68 Jun 19, 2008, 04:18 PM Vic - Is there an article for it?
Troy - The are no guides that are posted just on the forum. For me to include it, it will need to be in the Guides section. And that is why I posted this article... if anyone wants us to pay for their guides, we will gladly remove it.
r_rolo1 Jun 19, 2008, 04:22 PM Attacko's "articles" are a sort of parody. Funny in small doses ....
VoiceOfUnreason Jun 19, 2008, 04:40 PM As there are too many authors to ask individual, I am posting this thread in the hopes that if anyone has a problem with their Guide being included in this project, we request that you let us know, and all traces of any guide of yours that we add will be removed.
There's this little itch in the back of my head that tells me I would have been unhappy to discover that my permission to republish my work had been assumed.
When the various pieces of BUG were assembled, were mods incorporated before contacting the author(s)?
alerum68 Jun 19, 2008, 06:46 PM VOU, nothing has been published yet. As for the mods that were assembled, all were under Open Source, and free to use and modify as needed. Would you like to remove anything written by you from BUG?
BTW - I have failed to see anything about copyrighting, or not reprinting without permission... Seems that would need to be included in the article, or at least on the forum somewhere... you happen to know where?
aelf Jun 19, 2008, 06:57 PM Are you including all the guides in the War Academy? How about those that are still being updated?

But they are posted on the internet without being intended for commercial use anyway. As long as due credit is given, I'm not sure it's unethical. Asking first would be a kind gesture, though, but I guess better late than never.

I understand and agree - I was mostly noting what reaction I might have had, should I not have discovered your note (for instance, if I downloaded a future version of BUG after being away from the boards for a while).

Which implies that those mods could be incorporated without advanced warning. My intended question was one of historical fact: were the authors of the prior art deliberately informed prior to the incorporation of their work, or was there only a general broadcast like this one?
BTW - I have failed to see anything about copyrighting, or not reprinting without permission... Seems that would need to be included in the article, or at least on the forum somewhere... you happen to know where?
I had expected there to be something in the terms of service, or the FAQ, but also draw a blank.
vicawoo Jun 19, 2008, 08:08 PM it's not illegal, but it can be disconcerting if something that you wrote is suddenly used somewhere else without notification or permission. it's not like on the forum rules they said that posts could be used included in the game (or mod).
I would private message each owner as a courteousy, at least telling them what's happening, so they won't be surprised.

Not to discourage you--this seems like a great idea to me--but I don't think that a person generally would need to put a notice of copyright on something for it to be protected, at least under US copyright law. But there may well be something in the policy terms of this site (I didn't go back and check) that covers the topic.
Cstasny Jun 21, 2008, 02:56 PM If the strategy guides you are putting into the pedia are readily available on the internet free of charge then I dont see any problem with using them.. Telling/asking would be a good gesture but I dont see many objecting to the idea, the guides were written to help people after all.
Genv [FP] Jun 21, 2008, 03:56 PM What if the person no longer plays Civ and some guy is impersonating him?
MrCynical Jun 21, 2008, 07:09 PM Given all these guides are already on this site, and weren't written for profit, I don't think it's that unreasonable. The authors should of course be credited, and it would be polite to contact them directly, but I don't see any problem with it.

wow stop being so cynical. people are more reasonable than that.
Diamondeye Jun 22, 2008, 03:28 PM Sounds like a nice idea. I noticed you mentioned articles only written on the forum are not eligable, and mention HTML coding. I am working on a rather large strategic article on the subject of civ/leader/UU/UB strengths and synergies which I plan to post here, on CFC, in forum formatting. I plan to include Screenies (of leaders, UU and UB, these may be changed to a link merely in the pedia version), so what would be needed for it to be eligable for an entry? I am not good with HTML and have no idea how to convert it into a PDF file. Also, will simple forum icons such as the :strength: and :hammers: icons be available in the pedia version?
alerum68 Jun 23, 2008, 02:18 PM It's not limited to just the forum, but currently I have only added War Academy articles. The 'Pedia does not support actual screenshots and photos, but does support in-game icons, like the hammer and strong-arm. Linking to other objects in the 'Pedia is extremely easy to do though. Don't worry about the HTML, if you can supply a plain text version. The python script I wrote is only set up to handle HTML right now, not forum codes, but changing plain text to html is very simple. Let me know when you are ready, and I'll add it in.:)

So then all the guides chosen should be "PERFECT" otherwise you're giving "BAD" ideas to the masses in a very convenient way..:D
I like the idea though overall...

aelf Jun 24, 2008, 09:05 PM So, what about guides that are still being added to?
alerum68 Jun 24, 2008, 10:51 PM A few of them had forum formating, and will have to manual change things in it, and they haven't been added. There are also a few small formatting issues I wanted to work out.
JujuLautre Jun 24, 2008, 10:57 PM Hey, perhaps this means I should work seriously on my future guide :D

Sorry, I don't understand what you mean. Forum formating? The War Academy has been revamped, and in fact now everything on this site seems to be in the forum format.
