View Full Version : A little map game

Hello all. None of you know this, but I love maps. I don't know why. I created a little thing in paint to play with when I'm bored which is basically an Earth map where I created a bunch of countries, then I just update em, expanding wars, etc. For reasons unknown, it's fun to me. So, usually I'm playing forum games, not hosting em, so now for something completely different.

I'm sure many of you know about RFMK or Reclaiming the World or BOAE. This game is going to be similar to those, but with one difference. No stats. I'm not keeping track of them secretly, there just are no stats. So how do you play? Well, below is a blank Earth map (caution, it's big). At the beginning of this game, whoever wants to play can pick a location on the map, go into paint, and create their own nation. I don't care what your location is, as I will be one of the players myself. You could start in Antarctica or the Sahara for all I care. Just not water. Once one week has passed, the game starts. This game, as I said before has no stats. Instead, this game is completely up to you. Confused? Don't blame ya. Basically, you just expand on the map, declare war, do whatever. Still confused? Don't worry. Below are some sample orders.
Expand into the following area, shown on map by black line.
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f56/Civfanatic/sampleorders.png

Yes, orders can be that simple. However, there are catches. If you do something insane, like conquer a nation who is obviously much bigger than you, or if you colonize all of Antarctica, your orders will be ignored, and something very, very bad will happen to you. However, stories help. Like all humans, I enjoy stories. If you send me a good story, I may allow you to do more than what you should be able to.
Some order advice: It will make it much easier on my internet if you cut out all areas which are not in your orders via paint.
Remember, stories are good.
Orders may be PMed to me or posted on public.
If you can, please please please please please include a map of what your empire should look like at the end of the turn.

Got it? If not, ask questions. Starting help on next post.

So, you starting out, eh? You came to the right place. Now, to start out, simply copy paste the below map into paint or any other image editing software, choose a color, and create your nation. You can start anywhere, and my own personal nation should give you an estimate of how large they should be. Also, include a capital city and its name. Simple, right? If you need help, questions. The updates will start next week. You can still sign-up after though you may be at a slight disadvantage.
NOTE: This game starts in 4000 B.C, so no Giant Death Robots. Sorry.

Just a suggestion but if you want to be taken as a serious Game Moderator I don't recommend that you both moderate the game and also participate in it. It might be seen as a potential conflict of interest. Hope this goes well, love these games.

Actually, I'm gonna be in it to show what an average nation would be. I'm gonna purposely make myself be the middle of the class to show about what's average. Also, my first few expansions could help out for people who don't really get how much they could expand. I'll be showing it as someone who does a few stories, maybe 3 or 4 sentences long.
EDIT: Ronin, also, please don't keep the entire map. It's not that hard. Go into paint or other image editing program, use select tool, make box around required area, and click cut.

I definitley want in on this. Sounds pretty awesome. Smart of you to take the Lower Mississippi and the Louisiana delta. I will be trading you for shrimp to make my Gumbo. Count on that, mythmonster. There is trading in this game, right? And how fast is time going to pass?

I'll be ambitious and claim the Northeast United States, on the same continent as the Texas nation. And I, for the life of me, can't figure out how to make that little capital symbol, but it's the black square.

I just chose the biggest circle option then zoomed in all the way and outlined the borders of the circles with red, or white for you, I guess..

EDIT: Turns are 50 years each. For now.
EDIT 2: Sorry, I'm not going full lazy-NES on this because, even in summer, my time is limited, so everything I explain in the OP is the rules. That's it. You could trade in spirit though, or you could make alliances, which will obviously help you.

That seems fair I guess. I just wanted to know how much liberty to take with technology. Anyway, my country's color is red, so can I just leave the capital the way it is?

No trading? Aw man, rats.

Brainstorm: Why don't we each design our own flags for our nations?

mythmonster2
Jun 22, 2008, 11:32 PM
That's certainly fine with me.

Fixed up the capital, I just edited my original post. Looks a little better.

Don't worry, I already got it up on the main map, though it may have magically moved a little to the west.

Where's the main map? Are you holding back on that until you've got a few more people?

Questions:

1. What exactly will determine the outcome of any wars and such?
2. You mentioned that every turn is equal to 50 years. Is a turn measured after everyone makes an order or after each order?
3. How fantasy/myth are we allowed to get?

mythmonster2
Jun 23, 2008, 05:58 PM
1: Stories and the like will mostly decide. If the attacking decides to attack the left flank but the defender focuses on the right flank, the defenders will be pretty beat up.
2: When I make an update, which I am hoping will come at a rate of one per week, that's one turn.
3: I'm attempting to create it semi-real, such as living in Antarctica, but do try to stay close to real life.

I refuse to join on the fact that I can't have GDRs in 4000 B.C

mythmonster2
Jun 25, 2008, 12:35 PM
Cmon, we only have 4 people! Is this concept just not interesting enough?

Bigfoot3814
Jun 25, 2008, 12:42 PM
I think there are too many other games similar to this one going on right now. I joined this one because it was just starting, and because it seemed to be more about good storytelling rather than stat building. If worst comes to worst, we could settle on one continent and do a smaller scale verson. We've got 2 people on North America already. CIVIL WAR GAME!!!!!

mythmonster2
Jun 25, 2008, 12:44 PM
Hmmmm, maybe if not enough people join, we could just start out on one continent. How about that?

Bigfoot3814
Jun 25, 2008, 09:17 PM
If that's how it works out, it's fine by me. You're in charge, mythmonster!

Bigfoot3814
Jun 25, 2008, 10:13 PM
Hrm... Now we have 2 in North America and 2 in Europe. What're we going to do!?

Neverwonagame3
Jun 25, 2008, 10:15 PM
Not to mention one in China. But I am willing to move if necessary.

Bigfoot3814
Jun 25, 2008, 10:17 PM
Well, don't do it just because I said... If we downsize, I do think That SE Asian country will have to relocate, but lets stay positive.

Neverwonagame3
Jun 25, 2008, 10:31 PM
Maybe it would be easier to compromise and start on a fictional world.

mythmonster2
Jun 25, 2008, 10:39 PM
Well, I'm not good at making or finding fictional worlds. Also, recently I have been considering making this a full on lazy-NES.

Neverwonagame, It appears you also accidentally removed a part of a river. Don't do that. Ulyaoth, your OK, but can you make it a PNG or a BMP? It's really blurry when you do JPEG.

Neverwonagame3

Sorry about the river. Though I can still take that posistion, presumably.

Usually in these games 45% of all countries will be in Europe and the other 45% in North America.

Ekolite
Jun 26, 2008, 07:29 AM
I might join but I would prefer the whole game to be moved to Europe. To use a whole world map there would have to be about 15-20 players and a ton of NPCs too. If we do europe or maybe the mediteranean we could have 5-10 players, no NPCs and that would be enough.

This is the map I'd prefer:

Not bloody likely!

mythmonster2
Jun 26, 2008, 01:24 PM
Well, I would do Europe, but that would be RFMK 3. So, what about North America or maybe Asia?

Bigfoot3814
Jun 26, 2008, 01:54 PM
I would rather do North America.

Neverwonagame3
Jun 26, 2008, 05:18 PM
How about we count the number of players in each place not willing to move, and decide based on that? I'm willing to move from Europe, so I don't count.

Confederation of Chingzi Bay
JainBei (Da Lian, close to Korea in china)

I have no paint so just give me the mouth of the Yellow river, along the coast all the way to Seoul.

Bigfoot3814
Jun 26, 2008, 05:49 PM
Well if we DO wind up moving to Europe, I would like Ireland, please.

Neverwonagame3
Jun 26, 2008, 06:16 PM
Maybe we should move the game to China?

mythmonster2
Jun 26, 2008, 06:17 PM
All right, we are moving to a smaller map, so I'm putting up a vote. North America or Europe or Other? (Please specify)

Neverwonagame3
Jun 26, 2008, 06:53 PM
I vote Europe, but also have another proposition.

Perhaps we could expand the map with time? This would allow for more players.

Bigfoot3814
Jun 26, 2008, 07:08 PM
You already know my vote. But at the present time we have seven people. I think one continent is enough for that if we continue the present size of our starting nations.

taillesskangaru

I vote Europe. America maps are boring IMO.

Ulyaoth
Jun 27, 2008, 06:41 PM
America's just a wide open space pretty much, Europe you have rivers and seas and islands to fight over and be in the way. I vote Europe, preferably with more of Africa and Asia then you had in that map.

mythmonster2
Jun 27, 2008, 06:49 PM
Allright, this game is gonna be in Europe, but first, another question. Would you prefer this type of game, or another lazy-NES?

Neverwonagame3
Jun 27, 2008, 07:26 PM
Being in plenty of NESes myself, I'd prefer this type. But it's understandable if others would prefer a lazy-NES.

Bigfoot3814
Jun 27, 2008, 09:23 PM
I don't know what a lazy-NES is.

Ulyaoth
Jun 27, 2008, 09:34 PM
yeah, I don't know either, this would be more interesting. If we're staying in Europe should our starting kingdoms be smaller to make more room or is it fine? I'll redo my map in a png for you.
