View Full Version : the longest time ever in Civ
leckig Jun 26, 2008, 03:09 PM So, how many hours non-stop did you play Civ?
Lets consider one hour of a play time as at least 45 minutes of gaming time per hour, so that you have some time to get a sandwich in and out.
My record is probably about 4 hrs, but I am still struggling at Noble.
Silbeg Jun 26, 2008, 03:11 PM simple answer...
too freaking long.:badcomp:
Julian Delphiki Jun 26, 2008, 03:14 PM 24hrs, from 9 on evening till 9 on next evening. I probably had few sandwiches and wine (maybe) and something like water to drink, with occasional (quick) bathroom break.
I did win the game! :D
Supr49er Jun 26, 2008, 03:46 PM I've also played a full day several times - took my neck a few days to recover. :D
gegabitelord Jun 26, 2008, 03:51 PM 45 hours 18 minutes give or take a few seconds.
PS: Damnit I lost the game.

A full day seems right for me, or a few hours over. However, I do not eat a sandwich every hour on the hour :cooool:.
Psyringe Jun 26, 2008, 04:58 PM 35 hours - that was back in the days of Civ1 though.

and I get really upset when I put 6H in and don't win, how did you ever find the will to play again?
and 45H without sleep? apparently thats getting close to the point when you start hallucinating
Have put about 8 solid hours in before or 16 with meal and coffee breaks
d.highland Jun 26, 2008, 05:27 PM 3 hours...
SwordofStriker Jun 26, 2008, 05:34 PM Back in the days of Civ II, I could easily say 24 hours on occasion. Now I can sometimes put in 8 hours on a day off if I have nothing else I need or want to do.

No I'm still thoroughly addicted.
leckig Jun 26, 2008, 06:54 PM well, i noticed that when i play more than about 90 minutes before I go to bed, I cannot sleep too well.
I simply cannot stop thinking about my next move etc. do you guys get it as well?
(dont tell anyone, I am from the government and I am collecting evidence that will help me to ban this evil game once and for good)

I have no trouble sleeping (usually I simply break down over the keyboard when I get too tired), but my mind keeps thinking about Civ, so I usually dream about the game I was just playing.

Well, the uproar that would follow such a move would certainly give the term "Civ Revolution" a whole new meaning ... ;)
Benvolio Jun 26, 2008, 07:18 PM Probably 3 or 4 hours. Not only does my neck and arm get sore after a while, but my quality of play goes down. I tend to think less about what I'm doing or trying to accomplish after a while.

Oh yes, I never start playing because 9 pm because I doubt that I will ever be able to leave my computer that night..even if I did, I would be up thinking about what to do next...
I have played about 8 hours in a row at most, taking short breaks for orange juice the bathroom and some food.

This happens to me regularly after a full day's work and 6 hours of civ
Ricci Jun 26, 2008, 10:14 PM What an excellent thread, shows how truly sick we all are, and to what dramatic extent just some of us.
I played 16 hours in an insane MP large marathon game with one human and the rest AI's. Proudly Moctezuma triumphs against Tokugawa!! (he never reached Samurais.. Haha!)
Willem Jun 26, 2008, 11:23 PM My record is probably about 4 hrs, but I am still struggling at Noble.
:hmm: Rookie.

That's more like it! I haven't been quite that fanatical but I have played all day, stayed up all night, and was still at it by dinnertime the next day. I'm not as young as I used to be I'm afraid. :D
ricardojahns Jun 26, 2008, 11:35 PM Jesus Christ... and I thought I was a freak :lol::lol::lol::lol:
Thank you so much to you all! You made my day! I can show this to the wife and still convince her that "I am normal"
:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:
MrFelony Jun 26, 2008, 11:41 PM I've gone probably 24 hours before, but i remember last summer I definitely did do about 60-70 hours a week at times.
Red Dwarf Devil Jun 27, 2008, 12:05 AM I work in Burma and the missus goes to Bangkok Thailand about once a month for a weekend.
When she calls back and asks what i am doing before I can answer  I normally get the answer does it involve that game.:mischief:
Short answer YES so when I am alone 8-10 hours at weekend is the norm

this reminds me Cartman in the WoW episode. When the need came, you probably just called:
"maaaaaam!!!"
Stoney the I Jun 27, 2008, 11:23 AM 45H without sleep? apparently thats getting close to the point when you start hallucinating
nah, it took me 4 days without sleep a few years back to get to that point.
I heared ppl calling my name that werent there and stuff....
my personal record is something close to 36 hours straight. after few hours of sleep i continued though. this was just after BTS came out, i loved it so much and at the time i had plenty of time :)
Julian Delphiki Jun 27, 2008, 12:07 PM well, i noticed that when i play more than about 90 minutes before I go to bed, I cannot sleep too well.
I simply cannot stop thinking about my next move etc. do you guys get it as well?
Sure do.
It actually helps me to get sleep, since i keep thinking the game and my thoughts don't wander off to other things. ;)
Physical effects somewhat suck, legs get all itchy and stuff from being in same position so long and my wrist often really hurts. When Warlords came out i actually taught myself to use two mice at the time (or one with the left hand as well) since i couldn't use my right hand anymore effectively but wanted still to play more..
BUT I AM NOT ADDICTED! NOT! :mischief:
sirsnuggles Jun 27, 2008, 04:09 PM I've been playing 16 hours a day for a month
sirsnuggles Jun 27, 2008, 04:10 PM dont even really have time to come, read and post to this site anymore
Eddi Jun 27, 2008, 04:48 PM hm... i had the game RUNNING for like a week or two before...
but i did not really played it all that time, often it was just idling in the background while i did other stuff or sleep
Bunk Moreland Jun 30, 2008, 03:34 AM I average 4 hours a day, but once I went 20 hours. For some reason I needed aspirin like 3 times. At this moment I'm contemplating not going to sleep. :p
leckig Jun 30, 2008, 07:46 AM I broke my own rule and played yesterday for 90 minutes just before I went to bed. i had dreams whole night that half of my navy went missing on the way to Babylon and my remaining forces that were already deployed there were struggling to survive.
whole night looking for the missing navy. it was very bad...
bestje Jul 01, 2008, 12:58 PM @Leckig: sounds like the bermuda triangle random event
and just to hijack the thread how many people have played civ for so long it caused them to hallucinate or have another symptom relating to lack of sleep?
cj7loop Jul 01, 2008, 04:04 PM 45 hours 18 minutes give or take a few seconds.
PS: Damnit I lost the game.
I lost the game.
On topic: 5 hours straight into a game.
quiddity Jul 01, 2008, 04:40 PM 32 hrs in a raw here ..
but even if the OP must means time "in a raw", we happens to stay 3 day long playing with my brother in lan with small several sleeping interlude :mischief:
what's up doc ?
unclethrill Jul 01, 2008, 04:49 PM I try to squeeze in at least 11 1/2 hours of my 12 hour shift at work twice a week. So long as the boss finally leaves. I'll get 5 or 6 in tonight when he finally leaves (this is why I'm on the forums right now instead).

At least you got to sit inside and surf the forums while he was here. I had to actually do work for the first time in a couple of months.
Oh well, he's finally gone. Three hours left of shift to play a game or two.
I try to get 25-30 hours of game time in during my four day work week. On one 12 hour shift I submitted 21 HOF games (mostly quick conquest games on tiny maps).
Stoney the I Jul 02, 2008, 06:06 AM im in the wrong proffesion
what kind of work do you do where you can play at work for so many hours and not get noticed?
Mesix Jul 02, 2008, 06:28 AM We are both field engineers. We get paid for what we know...not what we do. Most of the time we are babysitting about $150 million worth of equipment with little to do. When something brakes we have to be able to fix it fast to keep services up and running.
It's not so much that we can't play while the boss is around. We just choose not to. Better not to have the issue come up. We watch movies while he is at work and surf the forums...that is if he doesn't give us busy work like happened to me last night. As soon as he leaves it's game on. Our coworker brings a PS3 and plays Grand Theft Auto while we are both playing Civ IV on our laptops.
Stoney the I Jul 02, 2008, 06:37 AM Thats pretty cool :)
im a highschool science teacher and if i start playing at work i might give off the wrong impression lol. now I might start thinking about switching jobs :goodjob:
GIDS888 Jul 02, 2008, 07:46 AM I usually Civ four or five hours a night if not otherwise entertained.
Sundays I have been known to go 10am to midnight with a couple need-to breaks grabbing something wholly un-nutritious from the kitchen on the way back, then wonder why I'm blitzed monday morning.....
It's good though, usually get a game in start to finish. How do you get to be a Field Engineer? Better than winning a lottery!
SenhorDaGuerra Jul 02, 2008, 08:03 AM Civ IV: about 12 hours straight
Football Manager: about 15-16 hours
Pro Evo (with some buddies): we've managed more than 24 hour marathons (playing round robins and tournaments with 10 minute games)
Diablo II: about 10 hours
Ive played other games extensively but not for longer periods than 6-7 hours, the ones above are the ones ive been addicted to the most!
ps, Diablo III has been anounced. sweet.

When I was in Highschool, one of my teachers let the class play Sim City. He felt it was educational and a fun way to get the class involved in discussions. Another teacher I had used the board game Axis and Allies when he was teaching us about WWII. Maybe you could build a lesson plan around Civilization and introduce your students to a game that is more educational than the average video game out there.

I'd say closer to $400 million but the rest is spot on

heh, that would be cool, but since i teach physics and chemistry there are not that many video games to choose fom in that area. Im open for any thoughts on it though.
Mesix Jul 02, 2008, 01:13 PM Physics and Chemistry are two of the technologies in Civ IV. Sounds like a winner to me.

Yeah...I was sitting at home wasting personal time on the forums (and losing the Diety Cultural Gauntlet for the HOF a couple more times) and threw out a very rough figure. Shortly after I posted I thought to myself that it was probably a little low.
Back on topic...I'm at work now (and so is Unclethrill), but I have some stuff to do, so probably only about 4-6 hours of game time tonight.
