Here is a challenge for the experts:

The settings are: Deity, Pangeae, High Sea levels, No Barbarians, One city challenge, Standard Game Speed.

The rules are simple: You are not allowed to create any military units.

To make it possible, I regenerated the map quite a lot of times to get a great starting position:

The problem is that the neighbourhood is not that good:

I'm also doing a walkthrough of my playthrough (space victory in 1924) in this thread: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=280565

The starting save is attached:

A no millitary game with Shaka nearby?
you are a very brave man, would be interested to see if you can pull it off though

Turinturambar,

What size world did you choose?

Oh it's standard size. Apart from high sea levels/pangeae and no barbs/OCC I didn't change any settings away from default.

May attempt this for a laugh. I am nowhere near being a Deity player so there's no way I'll get close to a Space victory. It will be entertaining to see how long I survive though using solely diplomacy though. And I REALLY want to try that start.

One question - are we allowed to upgrade the Warrior? Not that it will help much in the event of an actual attack (although if you got Fascism first maybe you could attach the GG for some measure of protection).

Hm, Kylearan did this a long time ago on Monarch/no OCC and barely squeeked by a win, and that was against the even more idiotic vanilla AI. Good luck, you'll need it for sure.

A good starting position would be lots of hills and lots of food. Good luck.

i hope you can keep shaka happy enough to last long enough so he can be your military for you through a dp or something

Game crashes when I try to load the save, either by loading it in-game or by double-clicking the save from my desktop. Maybe it's just me.

Save worked fine for me.

Lost the lottery, so game over a few turns after completing Pyramids. An unfortunate feature of Deity OCC, frequently you get declared on (Shaka) before you can tech trade so there really aren't many options to suck up.

I really would not go for the pyramids. You don't have enough food to leverage early representation and 500 hammers is a very large investment. When did Shaka attack? I get him to pleased around 1200 BC once tech trading starts.

Codewarrior: My guess would be that you have not yet upgraded to patch 3.17.

Is this even possible? (I doubt it is.)

If anyone can pull off a win, we will call you deity gods.

Hmmm.... Oracle (Marble in BFC) Alphabet for very early tech gifting???

With Shaka nearby it will be hard..... or you risk to not be his friend, or you feed him to go somewhere else and you risk a Dom/backdoor diplo win. It looks that you have pretty narrowed options here.

Elkad, you mean you were close to winning this particular game? Or another deity game?

You guys are kidding, right?
What are the odds of NOT getting DOW'd by Shaka when your power rating is creeping alongside the bottom axis of the chart?

To think of it, if such a win was possible, I'd say the game mechanics are broken:crazyeye:

A country with no military should get DOWed in RL as well

I would rush for writing and OB Shaka. Every 10 turns cancel the deal ,the renew it for a peace treaty.

No stone, very low food.. This start is not anywhere near optimal for occ...

This game. I've messed with a couple of the Immortal challenge saves, but never finished an immortal game either. And this is my first OCC since Civ1

I had DPs for a good part of the game with 2 other civs, bribed people into wars, and got declared on once anyway.

Settled in place. Got oracle, pyramids, shaka declared on me despite open borders and same religion, pushed stack of spears and archers in, game over.

Restarted. Moved writing up the list, opened borders sooner, gifted gems to shaka, he declared on brennus. MC from oracle. chopped pyramids, made it. MC made good tradebait, as always. Got GL, Music artist, lost lib, got Taj, pretty much lost everything else. Other than an academy and scotland yard, I settled everything until after industrialism. My 5 nationals were. GT, NE, IW, NP, Oxford.

I bribed Shaka and Charlie into wars often. Mana Musa was hated by everyone the entire game, yet managed to be the score leader for most of it. I usually play 18civs, so only having 5 to manage made the diplo rediculously easy. Beelined internet once I had my NP up, got computers first, got internet.

Saved up some GEs. Kept on going to Space Elevator. The turn I popped Robotics I insta-built the SE with 2 GEs. Brennus declared on me at this point, pushed a tiny pile of cavs into my land. I bribed Shaka and Charlie both to declare on him (and Julius to declare on ManaMusa again just to keep him busy). Charlie had a LOT of infantry that he insta-upgraded to mechs with the pile of cash+robotics I gave him, and he conviently pretty much paved my entire culture in them on the way to the front. Went on towards fusion, replaced all my farms with watermills and workshops (dropping me from pop 35ish to pop22 by the end of the game). Charlie vassaled Brennus eventually, and I couldn't get anyone to declare on him. Huayna and JC both had 2 legendary cities. Charlie beat me to fusion, despite some side techs.

He launched the turn I finished genetics for the last part. I'd gifted every other tech to everyone but him, hoping one of them would research it faster than me so I could get it from internet. I went ahead and played out the last few turns, launching my ship.

Charlemagne beat me via a Space Victory, 1865ish. If I hadn't got pushed out of Representation by the UN early, (costing me a lot of beakers), I might have pulled it off.

Whoa 1865 is freakishly early. In my game it was enough to win in 1924 with lots of time left. The opening with writing and oracle is probably the best. Why didn't you just defy the resolution if you had the Globe theatre up?

The trick is that AIs will only extremely rarely decide to go to war with you when they are pleased with you and pretty much never when at friendly. So you just have to figure out a way to get lots of diplo boni with your neigbours.

The no military rule is actually not that much of a handicap. Even if you could build units an early war would be disastrous with just one city vs Deity AIs.

Because I've never defied before. No idea what it does. I assumed it would make everyone declare on me, or at least give me a "-8 you defied the global mandate!" with everyone.

As to the speed. Over-gifting of techs on my part probably contributed to that. I always play 18civ/random personalities, so I have NO idea which AIs will stab me at pleased/friendly/whatever. So I probably gifted more than necessary, advancing the tech pace.

@Elkad:

Could you not have defied the resolution to adopt US?
If you build GT in your city then you can defy whatever UN resolutions you like with no consequences

For future use defying a UN resolution gives you unhappiness in all your cities (unless the GT is there) until you vote yes/ no on another resolution
there is no diplo penalty
