Hello again!

As I mentioned in this (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=261105) thread, I have devised a plan to achieve all the requirements for four of the six legs of the Elite Quattromaster Challenge.

I will try to post a thread around every two weeks with the game conditions, and then some highlights of my game, and encourage others to do the same. I also open the floor to discussions of strategy, as the regular HoF'ers never cease to amaze me with their insights into the game.

Round 11: Yes Ozbenno, it's that TIME!

As Ozbenno pointed out earlier, my only slot left open in the Monarch Machiavelli is Time, so you knew it was coming.

"Required" Settings:
Expansion: Vanilla/Warlords
Era: Ancient
Civilization: Germany
Victory Condition: Time
Game Speed: Normal
Map: Terra

Although all maps except duel are eligible for EQM, most of the submissions for the Bindy challenge so far have been small or standard, so I’m going to concentrate on those two.

Here again are the opponent requirements for various map sizes.

Mapsize Minimum Maximum
Tiny 2 4
Small 4 7
Standard 6 10
Large 8 14
Huge 10 17

Both Vanilla and Warlords folks have two leaders to choose from. Bismarck is Expansive and Industrious in both versions; Frederick is Creative and Philosophical in Vanilla and Organized and Philosophical in Warlords. The UU is the Panzer (tank with bonus against other tanks), which you will get to build in a time victory, although you might not have enemy tanks to kill at that point. Warlords players will also have the UB, which is the Assembly Plant, a factory that allows you to hire more engineers.

Germany starts with mining and hunting. Terra is probably the map with the closest quarters, so a rush is in order. Remember that you can keep the winning domination percentage high by keeping the number of opposing civs to a minimum.

If you're interested, the current best datesscores for a small map are:

Deity No Entry
Immortal No Entry
Emperor No Entry
Monarch playshogi 15519
Prince ChrisFromLux 12166
Noble elmoro 8348
Warlord swoll_01 4790
Chieftain donsig 4875
Settler a space oddity 3908

and the current best scores for a standard map are:

Deity No Entry
Immortal No Entry
Emperor No Entry
Monarch erikthecelt 12048
Prince CliftonBazaar 10716
Noble azylic 14517
Warlord shyuhe 8104
Chieftain Snaproll 4619
Settler donsig 3549

Results:

Bindamel won with 10921 points on Monarch Small map (http://hof.civfanatics.net/civ4/game_info.php?entryID=12694)
bestje won with 12992 points on Monarch Small map (http://hof.civfanatics.net/civ4/game_info.php?entryID=12673)

You now...I just started reading through these. I would give this a try, but I really don't like playing Vanila. It feels like I am playing an early beta release of the game after getting used to BTS. The only games I play on Vanila are for the cursed Space Race that is ever so slightly different than the Space Colony victory condition.

A german time victory; do captured wonders count towards score? or if we want the points do we have to self build?

Mesix

They count for score. When doing Tiny Conquest games, I always keep cities with wonders and raze the rest. The more wonders I capture, the higher my score is.

Got the Germans so not sure if I'll partake. Captured wonders and shrines do count for score, as do national wonders, so make sure to build them all.

Yes they do count for score. They do not produce culture.

I think that the score bonus is higher if you do build them though.

Nope, the score is the same whether you build them or capture them.

Sorry, I misread your post. I inserted the work "not" subconsciously.

Game finished, couldn't face a standard size map for this one so played on small and at monarch with Bismark. posted a 10k+ score
opponents were Liz, FDR, Gandhi and HC
181555

The typical I won screenshot (does anyone have any suggestions for some more interesting screenshots I could stick in?)

Plan was to capture all the old world and kick all the AIs off the continent in 2 stages first up an axe and sword rush then another wave of attacks at rifling.
Ran a cottage economy which because my empire was massive was producing a crazy number of beakers popped a lot of GP as well because of SoL and mercantilism.
(there didn't seem much point running free market as no one had more than 2/3 cities anyway)

Started off by founding 2nd city to grab copper then axe rushing (with a few spears thrown in) HC and taking all his cities, teched a little bit to get war elephants as I had ivory and then kicked Gandhi of the mainland in a 2 stage war (at one point he took some of his cities back but he wasted his entire SoD doing so and then couldn't stop the jumbos).

Then I took a break from warmongering to catch up in tech and get the economy fixed.

managed to get FDR to DoW on Liz and then joined in a few turns later and in another 2 stage war took all her continental cities.

this only left FDR and in a 3 pronged assault he two was fleeing into exile as his empire collapsed, bit irritated here as everything i'd captured on his borders was flipping to him. fortunately only longbows spawned and they weren't much use against my rifles

after that I settled down to rebuild an economy and tech, just taking the English and American cities on islands off the coast to get rid of cultural pressure and actually be able to use marines for a change

At the end had all the wonders from either building them or capturing them, managed to research over 30 future techs but it wasn't quite good enough to take the top spot, sorry Oz think I knocked one of your games out of 2nd :mischief:

Thoughts on time games, terra map seems ideal just capture the old worls and let the AI fight the barbs for the new world. usually the old world is too small to trigger domination which is the main worry for time games. doing this means you also take out the AIs best cities and force them to start again from scratch. None of them managed to get anything substantial going again.

I feel a bit bad for HC though, I turned on require complete kills and so he spent the entire game wandering around outside my territory with a single archer

I won in 2050 A.D. :mischief:

Oh, and finished with 10921 points.

Freddie, Monarch, small here. As bestje said, what screenshots do you include in a time victory?

I used random opponents, and started at the eastern end of the old world. I eliminated Roosevelt, left H.C. with two iceball cities, left Genghis with a northern iceball city and some southern island cities, and then finally marched on Toku leaving him with only island cities. This was all done before the gunpowder era, which is surprising for me, as long, drawn out wars are one of my bigger problems. :)

Here's a list of my new world hut pops:

Radio from Liberalism in 1896:

There was one final brief war with Toku in 1960, my only chance to use panzers, which were very effective against his crossbows. I used the war to take the infamous Nara, home of Islam. I also took out his only city in the new world at that point. He did manage to settle a few more before the end of the game.

A look at 2049, first the score breakdown. I missed the Kremlin due to obsoleting it I think before researching Communism. (Toku built in 2039, so if I had been paying attention, I might have been able to get it.) I missed one other, I'm not sure which, unless shrines count, as I accidently razed the Jewish holy city somewhere along the way.

And my city list. With about 40 turns to go, I farmed and windmilled everything for extra pop.

Finally, victory conditions, no danger of anything other than a time victory here:

looks like you played a pretty perfect time game, even finding time to farm and windmill at the end. by that point I was bored and teched to increase my score.
how many FT did you get?

How close were you to the domination limit at the end as well?
I think that was what helped me out my continent was almost perfectly sized

Bindamel

Domination was 57 vs. 68; I could have, and probably should have taken most of the islands, I just couldn't be bothered.

I purposely walked away from the game with 40 turns to go, so I would come back to it refreshed and willing to play around a bit.

The game was far from perfect, as I wasn't close to domination, I razed the Jewish holy city, and missed out on the Kremlin. I think I was around 10 FTs, which isn't very good.

On another note, I've been noticing that bestje and I have been having a lot of close games, so I took a look back, starting with Round 4, when he started playing Monarch:

4 1910 AD 1900 AD

Some close games there!

you can see me getting better at the game as we have been going along
some very close games, particularly round 5 and 8 were about a turn different.

Is there anyone else who is everpresent? even though I technically only got an honorary game in round 3

Have to say that i'm really enjoying playing this series of games.

bestje made me think I actually had a shot; his "10k+" score was almost 13,000!

Results are in the first post, and looking at my previous post, I'm now down 5-3.

lol, i'm just cruel
Have no idea why I have such a big score though
I have a suspicion you will be able to pull it back with this next game as well

by the way is there any chance I could get you to tell me what a couple of the rounds will be so I could play them in advance?
I'm going to be working abroad for 2 months in august and september and I won't be able to play any games of Civ and I don't want to get left behind.
If I knew what rounds were coming I could play them in advance them submit the games with everyone else (though 3.17 might mess this up)

good luck for Portugal!

Very similar climate to England, very picturesque as well. Wellington is incredibly windy as well. Have fun!

I'm going on vacation back to the States next week. I will probably not be posting too many games while on vacation.

I have a final exam and a term paper to write for my Spacecraft Design class before I go on vacation, so I probably won't finish my Monarch EQM until I get back in August.
