View Full Version : Welcome to the new Colonization forum!
Thunderfall Jun 29, 2008, 11:34 AM Welcome to the new Colonization forum, everyone! :wavey:
As you can see, I've moved some existing threads about the new Colonization here. There are more Colonization related threads in the News Updates (http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=208) forum, but those we can't move here.
Have fun discussing the game! :)
Abaddon Jun 30, 2008, 02:42 PM Wouldn't this make more sense in its own section above revolution since its the newer game, and nothing to do with cIV other than the game engine?

Considering its name is Civilization IV: Colonization (like Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword), it fits under the Civ4 category. If you are using the game's engine, you can't really claim it has "nothing to do with it" -- the game's engine is a huge part!
The Turk Jun 30, 2008, 06:48 PM So when is the game going to be released?? and will it be a stand alone game or an expansion to civ4

Fall 2008 is all that's known so far.
and will it be a stand alone game or an expansion to civ4
Both - it uses the Civ4 engine, thus expanding upon Civ4's system, but it is also a standalone game that doesn't require any previous games to be installed.
Cytral Jul 01, 2008, 07:51 AM this is a remake of the old 1 right?
the old 1 was fun

Indeed it was! From the information released so far, they have simply improved the graphics, removed some annoying features such as the "dragoons surround your colony in peace time" idiocy, improved some other things, introduced cultural borders, introduced diplomatic face-to-face encounters of the Civilization type and - well, basically done what all we old "Colonization" fans have hoped for for many years.
player1 fanatic Jul 04, 2008, 09:54 AM Kinda reminds me of evolution from Civ1 to Civ2 (minus extra units/buildings added in Civ2). Almost same core gameplay, plus some small refinement through all places.
And better graphics. :D
coffeeholic Jul 04, 2008, 10:16 AM I can't wait for this new game. I would still play colonization if it were easier to get running
this is a must 'pre order from EB' for me!!!!!

DroopyTofu Jul 05, 2008, 11:23 AM By "same game engine" you mean it will be like Civ IV, only instead of 4000BC-2050AD it will be more like 1400-1800?

It will "look like" civ and that's it.
Gamplay is much different.
DroopyTofu Jul 10, 2008, 01:59 PM Ok, thanks!
Toni1 Jul 12, 2008, 08:55 AM DroopyTofy, you should give FreeCol (http://sourceforge.net/projects/freecol/) a try if you did not play the original Colonization to get a glimse what kind of game it was. FreeCol is mostly faitful remake of the orginal with some, mostly optional, features and improved graphics added. 0.8.0 will also be moddable and have more nations but as always they will be optional. The FreeCol 0.8.0 alpha (http://www.freecol.org/news/freecol-0.8.0-alpha-released.html) was just released but I would not recommend it to new users (it being unstable, buggy and feature incomplete). They should use the 0.7.4 version (http://www.freecol.org/download.html) instead until full 0.8.0 is released, possibly within next few weeks.
DroopyTofu Jul 12, 2008, 09:58 AM Thanks:cool:
I'm busy for the next few days, but i should be able to try it by Wednesday.
kovacsflo Jul 14, 2008, 05:49 PM I haven't found in any of the articles that how will unexperienced military units becomes the fit of "veteran soldiers". And, will we have different forms of veteran soldiers by the rate of XP or the difference of speciality (for example: one gets bonus against the natives, one against Europeans)?
Does anyone know where can I read about it?
Thx

I haven't really seen that mentioned either, and I've read most/all of the previews. We should get some new info soon as E3 is right about now.
kovacsflo Jul 15, 2008, 05:03 AM I'm really wondering how could firaxis combinate CIV4's XP collecting strategy with colonization's mastery based promotion.
kovacsflo Jul 30, 2008, 04:58 PM About military unit promotion, I have found a picture:
http://www.civfanatics.com/gallery/showimage.php?i=1840&c=
A unit outside of this city in the picture can be promoted if Col uses the same graphic for promotion. Also you cen see a treasure chest looking like the same that we see in Warlords/Viking scenario. I hope the conquistading tactic will work in the new game, it also helps you to provide your military - and maybe this effect will be more effective in Col.
Thinker19930602 Aug 13, 2008, 08:39 AM I don't get it...
So it's a standalone game, meaning that you don't need CivIV to play it, but does that mean that it will only be Colonization or will original CivIV content be included?
Will we even be able to play online with people who don't have Colonization?
What about mods? will there be any mods?
How about scenarios?
Will the game still follow the CivIV time advancement scheme, or will it be stuck in the Industrial era?
I'm Confused.....
player1 fanatic Aug 13, 2008, 09:42 AM No, just Colonization.
It does not expand anything for Civ4 or include anything Civ4 related.
Thinker19930602 Aug 13, 2008, 10:35 AM Aww man...
I was hoping it would expand on the other expansion packs.
Will there still be modding though?
Patrick555 Aug 18, 2008, 04:05 AM It is obliged to be rather
Lubricus Aug 18, 2008, 04:16 AM Modding will run roughshod over the game within hours of its release. I will mod in Portugal, Denmark-Norway and maybe Sweden even before I start my first regular game. :king:
Supr49er Aug 21, 2008, 09:58 AM This forum will sure get busy in September or October. :D
