View Full Version : Who have never played Colonization?
Thunderfall Jun 29, 2008, 03:42 PM I feel ashamed to admit that I've never played Colonization.
I do look forward to play the new version however.
Am I the only one here who hasn't played the original Colonization? :)
kazapp Jun 29, 2008, 03:42 PM *raises hand*
Refar Jun 29, 2008, 03:51 PM I tried it once on a friends computer - who was really-really excited about it... I didn't liked it (Or let's say i prefered other games at that time), so i didn't buy / play it again...
i_diavolorosso Jun 29, 2008, 03:55 PM My first civilization game is civ 3..
Looking forward to colonization
Ginger_Ale Jun 29, 2008, 03:56 PM I haven't either...
In fact, the Civilization series are the only games by Sid Meier I have played! I guess I'm just young. ;)
TheLastOne36 Jun 29, 2008, 04:23 PM Haven't played it either. I have only played the CoL the fan based one.
TheBladeRoden Jun 29, 2008, 04:24 PM meeee, and I don't plan to
Refar Jun 29, 2008, 04:29 PM meeee, and I don't plan toInteresting point - when i come to think of - probably neither do i - if they turn up the graphics, it just not going to run on my PC. And i wont buy a new one before Civ5 is out
JujuLautre Jun 29, 2008, 05:49 PM * raises hand *
The Almighty dF Jun 29, 2008, 05:59 PM I never played the original either.
mech654 Jun 29, 2008, 06:07 PM I sadly never played Colonization but I planned to get it.
jamescat Jun 29, 2008, 06:20 PM never played it.
does anyone know if its gonna be released for Mac, cause I want to play it.
potatoe Jun 29, 2008, 08:53 PM I missed out on it when it was new but I managed to get a hold of it and play it a couple years back. I never really gave the game much of a chance at the time though, and so I finally decided to start playing it again when they announced the remake last week.
Churchill 25 Jun 29, 2008, 10:54 PM never even seen a screenshot of the old version. I am very excited about the new version. I am waiting for a release date
Crezth Jun 30, 2008, 12:05 AM I played Colonization a long time ago, but I generally had a falling-out with it as Civilization III and, eventually, Civilization IV took center stage. I do remember however enjoying it immensely, and I suggest "FreeCol" to anybody looking to have a Colonization experience. It is a faithful fan project to recreate Colonization and it is nearly a perfect duplicate.
MusX Jun 30, 2008, 05:10 AM I used to play old Colonization very often. There were even great peoples :D
Shabbaman Jun 30, 2008, 05:23 AM I feel ashamed to admit that I've never played Colonization.
And ashamed you should be! It's not as if you're some random n00b ;) Obviously the game is pretty old, but if you predate civ2 it's hard to imagine you haven't played it. Col.exe is micromanaging goodness! Now there could be about 95% of the 38k CFC members who haven't played this game, so this thread has the potential to be the Largest. Thread. Ever. But entertain me, why haven't you played it?
Greybriar Jun 30, 2008, 05:59 AM Interesting. I thought everybody had played Colonization. Of course it did originally come out for DOS in 1994 with the Windows 95 version being released the following year, and that was quite awhile ago. Some of you might not even have been born yet. ;)
Not only did I purchase and play the original DOS version of Colonization, but later on I bought the Windows 95 version and it is the Windows 95 version I have on my PC right now. I boot it up from time to time and I am happy to report it runs quite well under Windows Vista.
Colonization gave me many, many hours of enjoyment. I hope the upcoming version will do the same.
PsiCorps Jun 30, 2008, 06:18 AM I never even heard of Civilization-Colonization and i started way back with Civ I. Don't beat me up too much.
TyranusBonehead Jun 30, 2008, 06:56 AM Nope, you're not alone. I haven't played the original Colonization either, but like you, I'm very interested in giving the new one a go.
Soneji Jun 30, 2008, 07:00 AM You must all be young pups then! I got it for my first computer, a 386 when I was 12! :)
MsKitty Jun 30, 2008, 07:04 AM Goodness! I had no idea so many Civ "fans" hadn't played Colonization. It was a GREAT game. I can't wait to make my Master Sugar Planter and Rum Distiller economies again.
PsiCorps Jun 30, 2008, 07:22 AM Having read more about the original Colonization i now know why i never heard about it, i was still in the military and spent more time drinking, roleplaying and chasing the girls than anything else. At least it wasn't down to an age related memory lapse
volbound1700 Jun 30, 2008, 07:27 AM I have it right now, if you look hard enough you can find it for free online (although I had the original game back in the mid-90s, I got it when I was in 6th grade).
Onagan Jun 30, 2008, 07:30 AM I have never played it, I did play Civ I & III only a few times, Civ II & IV I played a lot
Thunderfall Jun 30, 2008, 12:46 PM And ashamed you should be!
It was before my time. :p I got my first computer in 1997, and started playing Civ2 (and HoMM2) that same year. :)
Öjevind Lång Jun 30, 2008, 01:31 PM I feel ashamed to admit that I've never played Colonization.
I do look forward to play the new version however.
Am I the only one here who hasn't played the original Colonization? :)
I played it and loved it. You have a treat awaiting you, if, as seems clear, they have done away with some clunky features in the original game.
I still play the original "Colonization from time to time, despite the clunkiness. By the way, I do hope they keep at least some of the original music.
Mehmed II Jun 30, 2008, 02:46 PM I have played FreeCol.
leo. Jun 30, 2008, 03:13 PM Colo was one of my favourite games its time and i played it for hours.
I really love to see a new version of it and i hope it will be as great as the old one was when it came out. I'm sure it's more than a civ4 mod only.
I'm just waiting for the next version of Alpha Centauri & Crossfire, which were also fantasic games with an awesome depth, theres a civ4 mod for it (Planetfall) but afaik it's not finished yet and can't reach SMAC at this time.
Arian Jun 30, 2008, 04:51 PM I've played it quite a lot, a long time ago....
Rusty Edge Jun 30, 2008, 05:35 PM I never played it. I wasn't even aware of it at the time.
I am looking forward to owning and playing it now.
SwordofStriker Jun 30, 2008, 05:54 PM I didn't get in to Civ until Civ II was out, so this will be a new experience for me.
GoodGame Jun 30, 2008, 06:10 PM I've played it. A great game, though marred by micromanagement.
Creepster Jun 30, 2008, 08:03 PM OK I am feeling old now, but this re-release has gotten me excited again for this game. I remeber playing Civ 1 when it first came out and Colonization was a great extension of the "just one more turn" from Sid. Just to let you know how much fun it is I still play it on an old DOS based machine I have. Some of the best games ever made are the older ones Railroad tycoon, Master of Orion, and of course Civ and Colonization. I just hope it is as good or close to the original. Then perhaps I can retire my DOS machine and get rid of those damn 5 1/4 discs. :)
sluggish_homer Jun 30, 2008, 08:32 PM i have played it but that was ages ago:))
but still prefer civ.
Esckey Jun 30, 2008, 08:35 PM gah now I really feel old. I can remember playing Colonization and Civ 1 and Simcity 1 and Railroad Tycoon for days when I was younger
holiday_hawk Jun 30, 2008, 09:56 PM Well i don't think i have, i remember years ago playing some game about colonizing the new world but i don't think it was it. I am excited about this though.
CustodianV131 Jul 01, 2008, 03:40 AM gah now I really feel old. I can remember playing Colonization and Civ 1 and Simcity 1 and Railroad Tycoon for days when I was younger
Nah we were the pioneers. Can't believe how few people in here played this... Would have expected that there would be a lot more.
You not alone though, I also played all those games on my old old machines. Must be on my 2nd or 4rd pc or so. First "computer" had no HD a oh so tiny memory, 5,25 discs and a tiny black and green monitor. Also it cost way more then a grade A gaming machine does now :D That was only 22 years back or so... what were you guys doing? :)
Well i don't think i have, i remember years ago playing some game about colonizing the new world but i don't think it was it. I am excited about this though.
Maybe you played: Conquest of the New World? http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/conquest-of-the-new-world-deluxe-edition Was a decent game, but not nearly as good as Colonization though imo.
TheRealCzar Jul 01, 2008, 04:54 AM I remember reading reviews of Civ1 and Colonisation, but was extremely underwhelmed. I was big into Dune 2 at the time and thought it was the game to end all games, why take a step backwards into turnbased?
Eventually a friend prevailed on me to try Civ2 and i've never been longer than a month or so without some form of civ ever since.
TheRealCzar Jul 01, 2008, 05:21 AM Maybe you played: Conquest of the New World? http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/conquest-of-the-new-world-deluxe-edition Was a decent game, but not nearly as good as Colonization though imo.
That I played, enjoyed it lot at the time, I liked the combat especially.
Fistleaf Jul 01, 2008, 09:12 AM Colonization is a nice game, but I can't stand the Civ1 combat mechanism where every unit has only 1 hit point, making the old "spearman beating battleship/tank" scenario happen frequently. I spend so much resources getting my soldiers trained, equipped with horses and muskets, only to lose to an unarmed settler.
Padma Jul 01, 2008, 10:34 AM If I had found it, and had the computer to play it, I would have. It is a subject of particular interest to me.
But I didn't like Microsoft (still don't. ;)) so I had other computers. I also spent those years finishing my active duty service overseas (think: Bosnia) so I didn't have much time for computer games, anyway.
When I retired from the military, I came back home, gave in and bought my first DOS/Windows based computer, bought Civ2, and never looked at the older stuff...
Circuit Jul 01, 2008, 11:15 AM My first run into the Civ series was Civ III. I was too young to even here of Colonization at the time it was around. I plan to get FreeCol installed on the Linux (Mepis) partition of my hard drive and give it a shot to see what it is like.
Like you Padma, I have a dislike for Windows (I HATE VISTA!!!!). I gave in only for Civ4.
remake20 Jul 01, 2008, 04:56 PM I've never played it, but I will probaly get it.
R8XFT Jul 01, 2008, 11:03 PM I still play it :)! In fact, I'm going through a spate of playing some of the older games and was playing Colonization last night. In Civ, I'm more of a builder than a warmonger, so perhaps that's why Colonization suits me.
Kanute Jul 01, 2008, 11:51 PM As a devoted player of strategy games of the board and the computer since the 70's (yeouch!!) of course I have played Colonization. Great game to toy with but ending a game was fundamentally flawed in my opinion. An interesting upside was the use of individual citizens (like population in Civ though mobile) that could be specialized within the economy/city or handed muskets/horses and moved around the map. A few downsides were tedious economic management as game progressed, # unit caps (shouldn't be a problem now), automated trade wagons that didn't work very well, and other minor things. Ending a game was awkward as I usually devastated all other Colonial rivals and couched on my vast holdings until computer memory was jammed - what was my motivation again for declaring independence and unleashing the European hordes? Oh yeah, I guess that's how you win. Unfortunately maybe, I'm looking forward to spending my money on this new version to discover how much care was taken in building a great remake of a game geek favorite.
Surreptitous Jul 02, 2008, 11:49 PM I have never played colonization but man this sounds awsome. I may try to find an old used game store to pick up the old copy. I really just started playing civ with the introduction of civ IV. I love BTS that I play. My qestion at this point and my limited knowlage of the game is, will this game be as BTS was were....all the new units ect are avalible in the free games. or is this more of a scenario addition kinda like the mods? eaither way I will definately buy this game, but a question comes to mind of all civs starting the same such as the play now feature which consists of the majority of my gaming. I only play scenarios when I start getting angry from losing a lot lol.
The Simple Mind Jul 03, 2008, 09:27 AM Back when I was playing Civ 1 I had and Amiga and I don't remember seeing Colonisation for it. When I got a PC I remeber seeing it as budget title butdidn't bother with it as I was stilling playing Civ 1 / starting to play Civ II.
Circuit Jul 03, 2008, 10:20 AM I downloaded FreeCol a couple days ago. Fun, but the AI ALWAYS declares war and I cannot make peace with it. I don't know if the original is like that.
Kanute Jul 04, 2008, 11:08 AM I downloaded FreeCol a couple days ago. Fun, but the AI ALWAYS declares war and I cannot make peace with it. I don't know if the original is like that.
Take a scout, like with Indian villages, to a European city to contact them and negotiate. I hope that helps if you didn't realize that already...
Bigfoot3814 Jul 04, 2008, 01:24 PM :wavey: I am among those who never played the original colonization. I'm planning on playing this one, though.
Zerver Jul 07, 2008, 01:39 AM I didnt played it. Just saw the post and watched. The main thing intersted me - is there any new python & SDK codes which allows new oportunities, and how much it's different from BtS?
Truronian Jul 07, 2008, 02:26 AM Never played it, but will be buying this one. (unless it gets truly aweful reviews, which I find unlikely)
r_rolo1 Jul 07, 2008, 05:58 AM Never played the old one... entered in Civ's universe with SMAC ( BTW for when SMAC II , even if with other name to dodge EA? ). Will definitely buy this one, even if to posrt some of the new stuff to BtS ( I like the water and I read that it will have a decent map editor )
Reggie Jul 07, 2008, 06:14 AM Never Played it, started with Civ 4 and stopped playing MMO's for it :)
Captain Pugwash Jul 10, 2008, 01:13 AM Hmm, I had my own DOS PC at home back in 1994. But I never heard of the game Colonisation. In those days most of my information came from computer magazines. We didn't have the internet to browse back then. Now you've got me thinking of the old days
sirsnuggles Jul 10, 2008, 09:41 PM Indeed, Col was more of a builders game than Civ, which appealed to me too. I loved the music, and the cute little pioneers that could go from city to city. I loved building a college and university to teach specialized professions. There was so much to explore and enough room for everyone to expand to their hearts content. I think that's what I liked most compared to civ: there was always enough room to build as many as colonies as you wanted, so there really wasn't much need or benefit in fighting the other colonies. In fact, fighting the other colonies could weaken your ability to fight the Europeans during independence.
Let's see if I can remember all the old units:
Sugar Planter - Distiller
Tobacco Planter - Tobacconist
Fisherman - Farmer
Missionary - Jesuit Missionary
Criminal - Indentured Servant - Pioneer - Hardy Pioneer
Veteran Soldier - Dragoon - Continental Army
Fur Trapper - Fur Trader
Preacher
Elder Statesmen
Lumber Jack - Carpenter
Ore Miner - Blacksmith - Silver Miner
Gunsmith
Cotton Planter - Weaver
Expert Scout
During that time, it was just three games for me: civ, col, and xcom.
Greybriar Jul 10, 2008, 11:00 PM During that time, it was just three games for me: civ, col, and xcom.
What?! No Railroad Tycoon or Master of Magic?! ;)
Öjevind Lång Jul 11, 2008, 04:36 PM During that time, it was just three games for me: civ, col, and xcom.
The same here. By the way, when will someone realize that many pepole would be very happy with the old XCom with just better graphics and some bugs tweaked? I don't care for any of the sequels to the game.
sirsnuggles Jul 12, 2008, 01:59 PM The same here. By the way, when will someone realize that many pepole would be very happy with the old XCom with just better graphics and some bugs tweaked? I don't care for any of the sequels to the game.
Agreed.
xchar
Mbest95 Jul 12, 2008, 02:38 PM Played it when it first came out and Will play it again. Still have the original game on my hard drive. Sid is The GAME GOD!!!:)
Hian the Frog Jul 15, 2008, 12:28 PM Ha ha !
I've played all the civ and colonization. I'm an old player (36 y.o). My first computer was a ZX 81, then an Amstrad CPC 464 .... then my fist real PC (a powerful pentium 100) . Now, i have a real beast of war to play Civ4 without problem !!!
Colonization was a great game. I wait for new version..... I hope this one will be as good as the old one.
bloodfin Jul 20, 2008, 12:09 PM Well, im only 13, so I reckon i could be excused:rolleyes:
but, I have been a civ fan since 2002, and my world was really expanded when i got the internet in 2006. Ive always searched for a mod that would fit (good) colinization down 2 a T. I got close, but the mod didnt work:cry:!
Colinization will b gr8 when it comes out, but will b much better with modders. I also hear that firaxis hires a lot of fan modders, so its an incentive. Ive never modded, but hope 2 in future, this may inspire me. ALL MODDERS 2 COLINIZATION!
Kathandrion Jul 20, 2008, 12:17 PM I'm rather young, but I still play it - though I would have been seven when it first came out, so maybe I didn't play it from the start!
In fact I only stumbled upon the fact that this new version was coming out by pure accident, on about the fifth page of a Google search! (I was looking for the music from the original)
Patrick555 Jul 21, 2008, 07:29 AM If someone it know when will be premiere Civilization IV-Colonization on world?
TacNuke Jul 25, 2008, 08:24 AM I never even heard of Civilization-Colonization and i started way back with Civ I. Don't beat me up too much.
Same here................
coffeeholic Jul 25, 2008, 10:56 AM I used to play Col all the time. It had a nice easy going feeling to it with the micromanaging of resources.. I love Civ but sometimes I get stressed during a big game,, Col was a nice stress reliever for me
AJK
C~G Jul 25, 2008, 11:33 AM I remember waiting Colonization almost more than any other game that has been ever published.
And it didn't let me down. It's one of the few games that have made almost get lost to a computer game for whole day and beyond.
Example for myself Civilization never has come close in the addiction rating compared to Colonization. It was off the chart.
It's also one game that I have returned again and again to play after few years.
Churchill 25 Jul 25, 2008, 01:12 PM I just downloaded freecol and I was really suprised. For an old game with horrible graphics and no music, the game was addicting. I really want the new version now.
Lord Shadow Jul 25, 2008, 02:27 PM I personally like the original game's graphics much more than FreeCol's.
CTH Jul 29, 2008, 12:52 PM I did just tested it, same with Civ I, can't say that I played either of them for real. Civ II was my real start into civilization and beyond! I guess I was a bit too young to like Col, my english wasn't so good back then, I was after all just 9ish and just started to learn english in school. The Civ games and games like them are pretty hard to learn if you don't understand any messagesboxes or anything :)
(I am swedish but live in US for a year now)
Jerrymander Jul 29, 2008, 01:21 PM I played Colonization a little bit before I played Civilization II.
Meh.
Kryptyk Jul 29, 2008, 05:56 PM I have never played it, I didn't even hear of colonization until this new one was announced :)
lionheart Jul 30, 2008, 07:43 AM Never played it, but heard about it when I bought Alpha Centauri.. I started my Civ experiences out with Civilization III, so I never really got a chance to play Colonization..
I'm definitely looking forward to it! :goodjob:
Warrior of Wales Jul 31, 2008, 03:32 AM Never heard of it before now, but will put an order in for Xmas with the wife.
Lord Ben Jul 31, 2008, 10:59 PM Interesting. I thought everybody had played Colonization. Of course it did originally come out for DOS in 1994 with the Windows 95 version being released the following year, and that was quite awhile ago. Some of you might not even have been born yet. ;)

Colonization gave me many, many hours of enjoyment. I hope the upcoming version will do the same.
How do I tell what version it is? Will it be on the CD? I'd lent it out to a friend, but if it works on Vista I want it back... :)
I play Colonization regularly yet.
Greybriar Aug 01, 2008, 12:31 AM How do I tell what version it is? Will it be on the CD?
My Colonization CD does not indicate that it is for Windows 95. It does on the insert in the jewel case though.
And my DOS version of Colonization is on 3.5" floppies.
If you are still playing Colonization, I would hazard a guess that your copy is the Windows 95 version. That's what I'm running under Windows Vista. I don't think it would run otherwise without the use of DOSBox.
Lord Ben Aug 01, 2008, 03:04 PM Oh, that's what I was checking about. My cousin is not PC-friendly and borrowed it to play but couldn't get it to work. I suggested DOSbox but he didn't even want to try it. I was hoping it was compatible without dosbox.
Khamul Aug 03, 2008, 02:29 PM Back when I was playing Civ 1 I had and Amiga and I don't remember seeing Colonisation for it. When I got a PC I remeber seeing it as budget title butdidn't bother with it as I was stilling playing Civ 1 / starting to play Civ II.
There was Amiga version. I played it lot, and I still have it (and I still have my A1200)
Modeltrainman Aug 15, 2008, 11:33 PM I'd never played it before PCGamer Sept. 08. (Civ 3, Railroads! Civ 4, Civ2, Colonization, Civ1, Gettysburg!.) I've enjoyed every one.
Infantry#14 Aug 16, 2008, 01:35 AM Nope, never played this game before, I started playing civ since civ 2.
Viperace Aug 16, 2008, 10:20 AM Let's see if I can remember all the old units:
Sugar Planter - Distiller
Tobacco Planter - Tobacconist

Fur Trapper - Fur Trader

Cotton Planter - Weaver
Expert Scout - I think it is called Seasoned Scout . 4 movement per turns, regardless of terrain :D
During that time, it was just three games for me: civ, col, and xcom.
I played Colonization before, and I feel old :crazyeye:
Greybriar Aug 16, 2008, 12:04 PM Expert Scout - I think it is called Seasoned Scout . 4 movement per turns, regardless of terrain :D
Yes, it is called a Seasoned Scout, but terrain affects movement; 1 movement point for clear terrain, 2 movement points for most forests, 3 movement points for wetlands forests and mountains. They can go a long way following a river though as they can traverse multiple river squares for a single movement point.
Minmaster Aug 16, 2008, 04:17 PM bought it at the $5 bin years ago, tried it a few times and couldn't play it. the game felt too ancient for me.
Kesnar Aug 17, 2008, 08:10 AM Well colonization was the first game on the series to play, and I still play it.Then my brother was playing alpha centaury and I start playing too, then i played civ 2 but my real introduction to civilization was civ 3(wich I love most)(it was the first civ game i really played, before I didn't knew english) and finally I am playing civ 4 right now.
Mack the Knife Aug 17, 2008, 03:35 PM I'm an old player (36 y.o). My first computer was a ZX 81
old? *cough* i've played Star Trek on a 110 baud Teletype 33 and we loaded the game binary with paper tape!! :D
never played colonization though but need a multifaceted game to tide me over the winter...looking forward to it
Viperace Aug 18, 2008, 07:52 AM old? *cough* i've played Star Trek on a 110 baud Teletype 33 and we loaded the game binary with paper tape!! :D
Interesting.... the model name sounds real cool
Supr49er Aug 21, 2008, 09:22 AM old? *cough* i've played Star Trek on a 110 baud Teletype 33 and we loaded the game binary with paper tape!! :D
never played colonization though but need a multifaceted game to tide me over the winter...looking forward to it
Played the original Colonization a lot.
My first game was 'Colossal Cave' text adventure on an IBM 1401 mainframe.
SilverGrowler Aug 22, 2008, 06:59 AM Played the original Colonization a lot.
My first game was 'Colossal Cave' text adventure on an IBM 1401 mainframe.
Ditto but IBM360 I think c1982
old? *cough* i've played Star Trek on a 110 baud Teletype 33 and we loaded the game binary with paper tape!! ....
10 years or so before I started gaming on a minframe I used a PDP8 - Proper fast tape readers were a luxury so everything was loaded by the teletype which had a tape punch reader. The IPL was via swiches on the front panel which were used to dump code in octal into the core so it knew how to read the tape. Now where did I put the coding sheets I need to send off for punching.....
I-am-a-panda Aug 23, 2008, 10:54 AM i played freecol, which was very hard to get used to and abonded quickly!
Kesnar Aug 23, 2008, 01:05 PM i played freecol, which was very hard to get used to and abonded quickly!
The new Alpha(unstable) Freecol now have Russian,Danish,Portoguesse and shewdish
I-am-a-panda Aug 23, 2008, 03:51 PM Languages don't matter to me! The lack of a manual and tutorial was crippling for me because i didn't know what was going on!

Kesnar Aug 23, 2008, 11:33 PM Languages don't matter to me! The lack of a manual and tutorial was crippling for me because i didn't know what was going on!
These wasn't languages but new colonizers(but I don't suggest you download the latest realeas cause it's alpha and very unstable)...Also there is now some ingame tips and a good manual to read...But also you can just read the old manual and play Freecol it's just very same.
AngryGorilla Aug 24, 2008, 10:58 PM I was 13 years old when it was released and I cant think of any game I played more at that point. I loved the resource management of the game; setting up traderoutes, tuning the export/import so perfectly it was rediculous. However, I found the warfare of the game to be lacking. If I recall correctly you could only make 3 kinds of offensive units, infantery, cavalry and cannons.

The war for independence at the end was a yawn. And I was annoyed at the fact that efter the Royal Expeditionary Force had capitulated, it still landed units and attacked you, and blockaded the sea, and you couldn't trade with Europe, and the other colonial powers couldn't do anything. And you still couldn't found any new settlements after independence. They simply hadn't bothered to enable playing after independence. I trust that has changed.
