View Full Version : My bad luck? Got Nuked
incubuspawn Jun 29, 2008, 06:06 PM Downloading patch now. But was wondering. :nuke:
This is my first time really playing BTS, and in a game of Prince, I went after the Incans. They where my neighbors and really anoying me with trade issues.
So I sent 5 Battleships and 20 destroyers, 20 Anti tanks... blah blah.
Next Turn my city that was right next to theirs, was hit with what must have been 20 nukes. The turn took about 20 minutes to process ( grr I hate that.. even with my current system it happens :( )
All of my attacking units was killed, my entire navy got that dock bug, my 2nd best naval builder was reduced to a 3 pop.... and to make matters worse, all my best friends in the game only got a -5 attitude to the Incans, resulting in only assisting me by agreeing to refuse to trade.
The entire event seemed a little off, and the nuclear waste was literaly on our borders. Is this common in BTS ? Is modern day warfare even possible anymore?
I had no nukes myself and no one built the UN yet. Was that the problem? Also Do AI in prince get less upset with other ais for use of nukes? I had thought ID be able to save myself by getting everyone else to help me :( oh well. This seemed a rather sore blow to me after BTS difficulty reduced me form a Monarch player to Prince heh. :nuke:
Just aking before I invest the time into another game.
ps. My favorite victory is point victory. And my favorite war time is modern ( usualy used to knock down the civs that are ahead of me in points ;) ) So a Nuclear happy AI really screws with with how I like to play.
gegabitelord Jun 29, 2008, 06:22 PM I always go into the world editor and remove all the uranium from the map for both me and the AI. This way I don't have to worry about anyone using nukes, this includes me and the AI :D.
Jewman Jun 29, 2008, 07:12 PM idk wat to say.
i play monarch and if i dont build manhattan project... well ive never seen the AI do it.
even when they research fission much earlier than me.
ive never been nuked but i have heard many stories of such events.

Why wouldn't I? if the AI can't have nukes then why should I be allowed to have them?

Newbie? My dear sir you are mistaken I have 889 hours of Civ 4/Warlords/BTS recorded on my Xfire account alone, so no I'm not a "Newbie", I just don't like nuke wars there for I always remove them from the game, I prefer conventional wars over nuke wars.
I like my tanks thank you very much.:hmm:

His advice may not answer my question ( and I wont do that anyway.)
But getting on his case is really getting this OT. And btw, he won't be able to do that in a multiplayer game :P
Back to OP. I am getting the impression that they are not nuke happy in any version of BTS. but I want to verify. And if that is the case, would the problem be because with no nukes of my own, no UN saying no NUkes, and or anything else? Was the situastion I described just simply in formula with when the AI will decide to nuke?
GooglyBoogly Jun 30, 2008, 06:49 AM I don't think that the issue should be "why did the AI nuke me"
But more, " I did almost everything possible to aggravate the AI and made the most tempting target possible"
You couldn't have done anything more to encourage the AI to nuke you.
To recap:
You didn't have nukes
You couldn't build nukes
The AI could nuke without everyone else DOW on them
You were already at war with the AI (no pre-emptive strike)
Your stack was inside a valuable city
Your navy was docked within the city
The AI had enough ground forces within range to wipe out the stack and take the city once nuked in one turn
You were right next to one of their cities that the AI had no hope of defending conventionally.
About the only thing you could have done to make it more tempting would be to base all of your aircraft (within the cap obv) within the city as well.
You had all of your (naval!) units in a single stack on top of miliarary units worth >>> hammers of the nukes used. I'd say it would be at least 2:1 advantage, probably closer to 3-4:1.

Yeah I can see that. Guess the AI in civ4 can see that too lol. NIce, will have to be more carefull in the future then.

Nice makes you remember how the AI figures out Nuke usage. But 20 Nukes? Crazy
TheDisco Jun 30, 2008, 03:37 PM I don't get why so many people cheat in this game. This scenario is extraordinarily realistic. A major civ with nukes is about to be steamrolled by a massive army from a civ without nukes. Their response was perfect and, from your complaints, worked very well?
Dealing with nukes in the modern era is a fun part of the game, besides being very realistic.

Listen. When I was a Newbiee like you, I would remove uranium controlled by AI and keep for myself, then as I gathered vassals, I would give them uranium. But... I have reformed and I let the AI build nukes, even encourage them by shooting nukes at them (if they live long enough to build them).
Warned! - There is no reason to flame or insult someone based on their preference of play.

I see your point sir, but I don't keep any for my self, I take it all off, for everyone, why you ask? Because I don't like nuke wars, I like my tanks, artillery, jets, and last but not least, Paratroopers.
Although doing so prevents me from using nuclear subs, but oh well.

they do have a un ban though.
and nukes can save a lot of soldiers.

This doesn't necessarily stop nukes....you can discover Uranium from any mined hill once you discover the relevant tech for Uranium. The chance is small but I popped 2 in my last game :D
URSExelcior Jul 01, 2008, 12:20 AM TWENTY nukes? That's a bad AI. Two are enough to wipe out ~80 units.

It's more along the lines of a certain term used by sirlin.net
No...nevermind
Don't pull uranium. Build the UN and ban nukes (the AI almost always votes for it prior to building them). Or, nuke them first.
Or, if someone DOES put up the manhattan project, and it isn't you with a tech lead, for god sakes build SDI or find their uranium and NEVER let them mine it, EVER.
Best is nuking their uranium, causing fallout, which without ecology they can't do anything about :p.
