Or IV.

GAME IN PROGRESS

Anyway, a group of Dwarves set out for a new land as they got tired of the previous lands. However, in this expedition of Dwarves, a few of them decided to plot murder and take the fortress for themselves. Will they succeed like has happened in previous forts, or will the Dwarves rise up and kill those who murdered their own fellow dwarves.

The name of the fort?

Vësgikut

Rules:
Unlimited players
1 Mafia per 7-8 Dwarves is a good idea. (subject to change if suggested I should)
If there is a tie in between votes, then the Fortress Overseer (me) will pick one of the tied at random to be killed.
The Mafia DO NOT know each other, so it's the last one standing who wins.
The rest of the fort wins by killing all Mafia.
All clues must relate to Dwarf Fortress.
NIGHT lasts 24 hours.
DAY lasts 48 hours.
Role Playing (RP) is encouraged.

RP Setting:
Vësgikut has started in a white sand desert. There is a nearby mountain, rumours of Adamantine are heard being within. A river runs through the desert and the climate is temperate. A few dogs have been brought and there is a lot of meat and seeds for farming. A few picks and a battle axe was also brought, and a war hammer.
There are also crafting tools in the wagon, and the wagon itself is made of 3 tower-cap logs.

Dwarves:
"Stylesrj" Sazir Rathurol, Expedition Leader. Leader cannot be killed by Mafias and can resolve ties in voting.

Why is that? A true dwarf lives underground, so if we get a miner, we can start digging so we're out of that temperate desert sun. If not, well the Architect could design a few structures that imitate underground.

Is there a currency in the fortress? What is it's state- communist, capitalist, moneyist (money exists but no companies), or what? (Want knowledge for RP)

Stylesrj
Jul 02, 2008, 01:30 AM
Dwarves are ruled over in a monarchy system.

In Dwarf Fortress, at first, everything is owned by everyone else. When you want a meal, you go to the food stockpile and grab some food to eat. If you need a room, you can be assigned one and not pay rent. Need clothes? Just pick some up.

But when the Tax Collector comes along, the place becomes capitalist. Dwarves have to rent rooms and pay for food. Clothes have to be bought and this costs money. But that comes roughly around 80 population.

Money can be pressed before the economy begins, starting with copper coins, then silver, then electrum (gold and silver ore mixed together or something) then gold and then platinium coins.
Currency is done by year, so the designs change every year.

Neverwonagame3
Jul 02, 2008, 02:44 AM
One last question- can I create game-irrelevant NPCs for RPing purposes?

Stylesrj
Jul 02, 2008, 02:53 AM
We might have a few NPCs, just for RPing purposes. I mean, the fort cannot really function with only one miner... right?
I'll probably add them in though, as I can't trust you to make Dwarf names (because the names used are from Dwarf Fortress)

Neverwonagame3
Jul 02, 2008, 03:13 AM
What if I put blanks you can give me names for later?

Katthir Uvarrag begins putting more hours into work, doing other jobs as well as being an animal trainer. He doesn't ask anyone for help, finds his own seeds, starts planting them, and starts trying to train his animals to hunt.

For Katthir opposes the inefficency of the Communist system, believing in a natural right of property. And he hopes to spark a political crisis to break the system...

We haven't started the game yet. No RP until the game starts. That's the rule. I think I stated it somewhere.

If not, no RP until game starts.

Not another one...

I shall not be joining, as the Dwarf Fortress theme is getting old.

Stylesrj
Jul 03, 2008, 12:14 AM
It's only the third Dwarf Fortress game. I mean, don't all Mafia games have the SAME theme anyway?

Neverwonagame3
Jul 03, 2008, 12:28 AM
But the 'fluff', as opposed to the game mechanics, varies.

Stylesrj
Jul 03, 2008, 12:43 AM
This is just like a Mafia game, but the Mafias are against each other as well and clues must relate to something in DF

Also Neverwonagame, all dwarves believe in a monarchy, its just that they don't have the capabilities or the right to start an economy until a proper capitalist (tax collector) gets there to start it up for them. So they have to start off with a simple system of sharing until that comes along. It's not a forced Communism and it is not called Communism, its just a general idea of the dwarves to share the stuff until the Baron (or Baroness) comes along with a tax collector and they go to a money system.

Neverwonagame3
Jul 03, 2008, 12:48 AM
Why do they need to wait for a tax collector? Do they not even have an idea of property yet? If they do, then why not start with that? I think Katthir, at least, should advocate such.

Stylesrj
Jul 03, 2008, 12:51 AM
The tax collector just makes the money system... official and tied towards the main market. Until then, the dwarves have better things to do like drink booze and/or hold parties and do a bit of work. No time for spending and capitalism! I recommend you play Dwarf Fortress for a bit, at least until the RP starts

Neverwonagame3
Jul 03, 2008, 01:26 AM
I don't see any reason why Katthir can't be somebody who wants to get rich, and therefore an advocate of starting the capitalist system earlier.

The Dwarves spent a few days travelling, but the wagon was getting unloaded.

The Architect was getting to work building a Smelter while the Animal Trainer was building a Kennel to train the dogs.
The Peasant was hauling food to a nearby food stockpile while the miner was digging out part of the mountain with just a copper pick. Hopefully the furnace operator who is waiting by the construction site of the smelter can make some ores.
The glassmaker and the metalsmith are busy fighting over who gets to use a piece of charcoal and the Jeweller realised that no gems were brought on the trip and they'd have to wait for some gems to be dug out.

The Hunter returned with the carcass of a deer, but there was no butcher shop or butcher to turn the animal into food.
The farmer was busy growing prickles berries outdoors, as underground farming would come at a later date.
The stoneworker was turning some pieces of stone into mugs, but was getting laughed at by the fish cleaner, as true dwarves tipple the barrel of alcohol, not use mugs.
The fisherman came back with a turtle from the river. The cleaner got to work, well cleaning the fish, but leaving the bones and shell.
This was going to be a calm spring.

OOC: It is now NIGHT. Mafia, PM me your kill
Also, NIGHT will be the start of a new season, DAY will consist of two months, with the lynching happening at the end of the season.
You can now RP. I'll play as the Expedition Leader, who'll not be a character in the list and thus cannot be killed, unless the Mafia kill everyone or everyone is lynched

Neverwonagame3
Jul 04, 2008, 02:43 AM
As before. Dwarfs in practice are quite anthromorphic, and some people just want to make money.

Katthir Uvarrag begins putting more hours into work, doing other jobs as well as being an animal trainer. He doesn't ask anyone for help, finds his own seeds, starts planting them, and starts trying to train his animals to hunt.

Sazir Rathurol examined the fortress progress from the wagon. The woodworker as of yet had not decided to tear it down for logs. That was a good thing, as that might scatter the supplies everywhere, leaving it open to the weather.
The architect had designed a small building for the clerk, and the foundations were being made. The clerk in particular was sitting on a stone chair, attempting to update the stockpile records on the stone table provided.
A hunting dog ran past the wagon.
"Katthir, what are you doing over there? How many of the dogs are hunting dogs? We need some trained for combat" Sazir ordered.

Neverwonagame3

"I've done as many hours as people would expect of me with that job, so I'm putting in a bit of extra investment for myself."

Stylesrj
Jul 04, 2008, 04:50 AM
"Yes, that's nice to hear, but hunting dogs won't do us any good when goblins come knocking on our doors or when those skulking filth that we call kobolds decide to steal one of our stone mugs we're going to use to buy out the elven caravan" Sazir said "And even if we do find the thieves before they steal things, we need strong animals that can give chase"

Neverwonagame3
Jul 04, 2008, 04:52 AM
"We are all obliged to put in a certain amount, and under the circumstances that's understandable. But as long as I pull my weight, why can't I use any extra work for myself? Sure, since I'll be more tired on part of the main job I'll have to spend large parts of the extra time on it, but why can't I save up a bit for myself?"

Stylesrj
Jul 04, 2008, 05:06 AM
"All you really do is train animals. How can you be overworked for teaching dogs how to tear the leg off skulking filth? It should be fun actually" Sazir said. "Are you sure you're not getting enough alcohol? I could ask the farmer to brew up some Dwarven Wine."

"Ok then... go get us another deer. I'll see if I can butcher it myself" Sazir said to Fer Osodgaso. "We might as well have some food"
He went to the previous carcass. Taking out a meat cleaver, he cut the head with it. Blood poured on the ground and Sazir was taken aback by it. "Why do corpses have so much Armok juice in them?" he groaned

"Good luck planting those seeds. But do remember to leave some of the Plump Helmets for others. We can make wine from it and then cook the wine into biscuits or a nice roast" Sazir said. He looked at the miner.
"Can't you get a stoneworker or a mason to do that? Or better yet, improve your skills in masonry and fix it yourself" he said to the dwarf.

Neverwonagame3
Jul 04, 2008, 05:09 PM
"Fine. I'll leave them for now."

Kathir thought about the situation as he planted, and realised that he had reached a good compromise. He could persuade other ambitious to go his way if he desired, and could begin dealing with other things as he desired.

For now, he focused on planting a crop. Perhaps an inferior one to the Farmer, but a crop he could sell in times of crisis. The next thing to focus on was a labor-saving device...

Stylesrj
Jul 04, 2008, 05:21 PM
"Hey Dèg Orstistag! Could you dig out a farm for us? That soil you muddied with the flooded river can be used to work on underground crops" Sazir said. "So get to work. We'll be able to grow Plump Helmets and be drinking our own beer in no time"
He tippled up a barrel of Dwarven Beer. "It's not very good quality" he commented, dropping the barrel gently as it still had beer in it

*the miner succeeds in putting a stone wall over the entrance*

Stylesrj
Jul 04, 2008, 09:22 PM
"Just be careful and dig above the river, but allow room for seasonal flooding. We need to be drinking Dwarven Wine soon, not this Dwarven Beer that we purchased with our supplies. I don't want to be drinking Strawberry wine either" Sazir said

OOC: Sorry about the delay.

IC: The Dwarves slept for a day in the current season. After much grumbling about having to sleep on a rock floor (or the sand itself) the dwarves got an alarming cry from Sazir Rathurol.
"MURDER!" he cried, and the dwarves gathered at the corpse.

"Non Player Character #4" Okir Emgashlerteth, was killed after strange-looking dogs and their puppies had pounded him flat before the Hunter could chase them down.

"Who could have done such a thing?" Sazir asked everyone. This was indeed disturbing news.
"I'll need the Animal Trainer for this one. Those hunting dogs can smell blood, so perhaps they can trace it back to the murderer" he commented

"Katthir! Get your lazy butt over here and away from the wine!" Sazir yelled "I need you to do a favour"

OOC: It is now DAY, Spring Month 2. Cast your votes people.

Neverwonagame3
Jul 05, 2008, 06:04 AM
OOC- On the RP: That is unfair! Katthir is not lazy! I specifically said he spent extra hours on extra work!

IC:
After the murder, Katthir began to worry. He continued to work, but began giving his hunting dogs extra training to defend him from attack. The farm, compared to it's previous state, was neglected.

taillesskangaru
Jul 05, 2008, 06:50 AM
Or the animal trainer might be the murderer himself!

Dogs are nice, gentle creatures who are not usually man-killers - well, dwarf-killers. It makes sense that someone is behind the scenes training them.

Stylesrj
Jul 05, 2008, 07:11 AM
OOC: Sazir believes your lazy. Don't blame my character for picking on yours for doing all the hard work. That's how capitalism works. Have you SEEN Sazir do any actual work so far?

IC: Sazir said to Katthir "Can you train those hunting dogs to examine the trail of blood? If someone got murdered, they'd probably leave a trail or something. Go check it out"
He then consulted the clerk. "These stockpile records are not recorded very well. Do we have 100 units of stone or 109? How many figures do you round these to?" he informed. Moving on before the Clerk could reply, he saw the Architect. "Do you think you can design me a house? The miner found some gold ores and I was thinking perhaps floors made of gold for it. You up to the challenge?" he asked

Neverwonagame3
Jul 05, 2008, 05:24 PM
OOC: Makes enough sense for me.

IC: "Fine!" Katthir begins getting the dogs to follow the trail...

Mafia Game:
If, hypothetically, I were the Mafia, why would I make a clue so obvious? More likely there's something subtle most of us don't know because we don't play Dwarf Fortress.

Catharsis
Jul 05, 2008, 05:31 PM
Right, who knows about Dwarf Fortress? Rheinmetall does (that's Ineth Kokebluzat for those who are roleplaying) so I propose we... do whatever dwarves do to execute people... to him.

Stylesrj
Jul 05, 2008, 07:30 PM
OOC: We execute people by hanging. Standard Mafia game. But we actually don't lynch people. We use elaborate systems and stuff or shooting in the head.

IC: Sazir tippled the wine barrel again. "Hopefully this season we get things done." he said. "Oh and Ākim Rithlutushul, have you built that Trade Depot yet, or at least got the plans down for Rithlut Vabôkbal (stoneworker)? I got a message from one of the dogs Katthir trained that Humans would be coming this summer" he explained.

OOC: Sazir knows about the messenger dogs :shifty:

Neverwonagame3
Jul 05, 2008, 07:33 PM
IC:
Katthir, hearing about the humans, asked "Perhaps we should make ourselves some bows&arrows? It could be a tactical advantage against the humans."

Stylesrj
Jul 05, 2008, 07:55 PM
"Bows and arrows? We can't use those! They're too big. I don't know how those kobolds do it with their smaller size than us, but are you mad!? Crossbows and bolts are our primary weapon!" Sazir yelled at Katthir.
"Besides, Humans are traders. I don't think they're here for war, they're here for our cheap trinkets in exchange for their quality items. Don't buy any clothes though. It's too big for us" he added.

Neverwonagame3
Jul 05, 2008, 09:17 PM
OOC: Rheinmetall, perhaps you would like to show up to defend yourself?

IC:
Katthir smiled. "Hopefully some of my crop will be ready- I can begin to make a little money". He also considered establish trade contacts with the Humans for later.

But his mind was more importantly considering other things. Firstly, whether the murders would stop. Secondly, while the murders would prevent this for now, he opposed the leadership of Sazir Rathurol. Not so much him as a person, but the fact leadership was undemocratic.

In time, he wished to pose a challenge. He did not want to be leader- in fact, he was willing to let Sazir have that role. But he wanted democracy...

Stylesrj
Jul 05, 2008, 09:24 PM
OOC: If the expedition leader suffers an accident, a new one is elected in half a season. I think its by popular vote. Expedition leaders are picked for their high levels of social skills.
When the population reaches 50, the Expedition leader becomes Mayor, but every year a new Mayor is elected by popular vote.

Oh and you should be making a vote. I mean, you can keep RPing, but the opportunity to vote presents itself and you haven't taken it

IC: Sazir examined the farms that were set up.
"What are you planting? Dimple cups!? We don't need Dimple Dye, we need Quarry Bushes! Spring is a good season to start! What if we got a thresher and there is nothing to thresh!? We'd have someone not working to their capacity!" he yelled at the farmer.
He looked at an empty field. "Plant Plump Helmets in it until summer, then I want to see Pig Tails and Cave Wheat! We need wheat flour for our kitchens and pig tail threads to make clothing! Then we can sell the cheap, undersized clothing to the Humans or the Autumn caravan in exchange for their good items" he added

Neverwonagame3
Jul 05, 2008, 10:13 PM
OOC: Katthir approves of that, but doesn't think it good enough.

For voting, I want to see if Rheinmetall will defend himself. If he doesn't, then I vote for him to save my own skin.

IC:
"I thought we went over this earlier. As long as I do enough hard work, I can plant a few seeds as private property. Of course a large part of thsi will have to back to the community as it's their seeds, but I'm just trying to make a bit of profit.

I'll take that advice, but I want to establish here and now that what I plant under said arrangement will be, at least some of it, my private property."

Stylesrj
Jul 05, 2008, 10:56 PM
OOC: Sazir was yelling at the Farmer, not at the Animal Trainer. The Farmer makes a big crop

IC: "I don't care what you plant in that small field of yours Katthir, but don't plant Dimple Cups. Only the seeds can be eaten. If you grind dimple cups up, you make dye, but I'm interested in getting this place fed and drunk up rather than dying a bag from grey to red" Sazir said

"Well, it's time" Sazir said.
He grabbed Metul ìtdùndesis, the Hammerdwarf, and they both headed to the forge.
The Metalsmith was sleeping on the job. Next to him were several stacks of silver coins. "Hey! No falling asleep while making currency" Sazir said. "Besides, you're going to die"

Ineth Kokebluzat threw a tantrum, then ran towards the river where he toppled over a bridge. He drowned shortly afterwards. Sazir looked at the stacks of coins minted and noticed that inscribed on the front of one coin were the words INNOCENT

"People of Vësgikut! Lend me your ears! We need to begin the creation of a more democratic system! We need the creation of an Opposistion! Sazir refuses to work, and yet tries to pretend he does so! A politician like that is not trustworthy!"

OOC: I expected more people to join so we have two Mafias, but one is fine too. Some of the characters in the list are NPCs. I was thinking perhaps one of the NPCs could be a killer too, but I decided against it.

IC: Sazir heard the disturbing news. "How dare you accuse me of not doing work! I am currently on break and I still am! I would go my duty as a herbalist, but there are barely any plants in this desert! If I were to gather them, I cannot lead this group!" he yelled at Katthir. "If we have more people, I can sign work orders off. You chose me to be the Expedition Leader and Manager when we were travelling to this place" he added "I'll let you be the expedition's broker if you want. You get to talk to merchants and help assess their mood for trading, while I conduct meetings, hence the golden office. I need to impress the Humans"

"Did I mention it comes with your own solid gold office, complete with dining room?" Sazir said "You always wanted to trade, so why not? I'll get the Trade Depot plated in gold if you want"

"No deal! I will not be corrupted!"

Calling to the crowd, he cried.

"YOU SEE! I challenge this tyrant, and he tries to bribe me! This is not democracy! We need an Opposistion!"

The peasant yelled "Get off the stage you! Ever since you've gone crazy, you've stopped doing work!"
He then picked up a barrel of alcohol and carried it towards the food stockpile. The fisherdwarf and the fish cleaner moved away. "Waste of time this guy. Instead of training and taming animals, there he goes with that laziness" the fisherdwarf muttered.
"The dwarves don't really care what their leader is doing. As long as they get food, booze and sufficient break times, they're happy" Sazir said. "That's why I was chosen on the journey. Because I allow them food, booze and breaks. They put in a good working effort and there is a good return. You have lost the opportunity to be my broker. How unfortunate"
Sazir walked back into the mountain. The wagon was taken down into three logs and was used to make beds

Katthir observed- three peasants so far were coming in his general direction. "At least I work at all! Why can't the likes of Sazir at least try to! I don't know how to farm- that doesn't stop me trying!"

Katthir smiled. Even if a small one, he had founded a party.

Sazir went back to his office. "I think there's enough dwarves here for me to start my work" he said to himself. Taking out a scroll of parchment, he signed off a work order for making stone mugs. "Stupid humans will trade a lot for mugs" he said to himself, giving the order to the craftsdwarf. "Get working. I have a meeting about mining operations" he said

"MURDER!" yelled the Fish cleaner.
Everyone rushed out of the fort to the river where the Fisherdwarf was last seen.
"Hey! What's the big news!?" the Fisherdwarf asked, sitting by the river with his fishing line.
"We thought you were murdered" Sazir said "The fish cleaner and you are never too far"
"No no no, the murder happened over thar" the Fisherdwarf said, pointing towards the Fishery.

Kälán Råshlerom, Peasant was found near the fishery, butchered and arranged into several basic parts. His torn clothes formed the words INNOCENT

"Damn, we're going to have a harder time hauling things." Sazir said, the only eulogy the Peasant would get.

Several wagons were approaching in the distance. Out in front, there was a Human and he was running. He wore an important tunic, which made him Merchant Liaison
"Come right this way! I've got the perfect place to conduct a meeting!" Sazir said to the man who followed him into the mountain.

OOC: It is now Summer, Month 2 (or DAY)

I won't do any more IC stuff in order to focus on the OOC matter of finding the killer. We have two pieces of evidence.

"Non Player Character #4" Okir Emgashlerteth, was killed after strange-looking dogs and their puppies had pounded him flat before the Hunter could chase them down.

Kälán Råshlerom, Peasant was found near the fishery, butchered and arranged into several basic parts. His torn clothes formed the words INNOCENT

Which person, if any, fits both clues?

OOC: You don't have to give up RPing. You can focus on the clues AND RP at the same time, perhaps doing both in one. I can't help you solve clues though, as the GM

OOC: People might have lost interest because of the RPing- if I don't RP, that might be solved.

OOC: I might create another game, similar to this. Basically there are regular people mixed in with a group of NPCs. However, some of the NPCs are murderers and the clues (according to their profession) have to be worked out to find out who the murderers are before everyone is dead. Roleplaying is encouraged...

Darn't. I went and killed a camel. It fell off a cliff and into the wagon, giving it a yellow would on a wheel. The humans ran away. :joke:

"Thief! Protect the horde from skulking filth!" someone yelled.
A Human axeman gave it a good axing.
"Nevermind. Hey, we can melt that dagger!" the Furnace Operator said

The merchants started to unload at the Trade Depot. "I'm sure you'll like what we're trading" Sazir said to the Merchants

Unfortunately I can only link one person to either of those clues, and that's myself (basic parts = pixels), but I don't really want to vote for myself, so taillesskangaru gets my vote instead. :D

Stylesrj, I think you really overdid the whole roleplaying thing. You should remember that you're not playing Dwarven fortress, you're playing mafia. Not many people play that game and so can't really take part with all the RP, and a lot more people just aren't interested in the theme, particularly because its been done twice already and is getting kinda boring. Also, you really, really shouldn't be taking part in the game as much as you are doing and having NPCs in your next one will make a really bad game.

Just my 2 cents.

Hmm good point. Reduce RP and not use NPCs...

If I get the chance to do another Mafia game, I'll keep it in mind. But I'll keep this one running until it is over.

End of Season Tally:
"Neverwonagame3" Katthir Uvarrag- I
"Taillesskangaru" Ākim Rithlutushul- I
"Catharsis" Akir Sárekîmäz, Farmer- I

Sazir frowned at that list. "A three way tie. Well, best pick one at random" he said to himself. He took out the silver coin. "Heads for Katthir, Tails for Ākim and on the side for Akir" he said to himself, tossing the coin.
The coin flew up into the air and then upon landing...

The coin disappeared. "Ah bugger this!" Sazir said. He found Metul ìtdùndesis the Hammerdwarf again and told him who to give a hammering.

The Hammerdwarf, with the help of Sazir grabbed one of the accused at random. The hammer was raised and WHACK! The blood spilled and puppies yipped. Sazir then said "You've done it again with this roast puppy. Oh and who did you kill?"

"Taillesskangaru" Ākim Rithlutushul, Architect was found dead after he was bludgeoned to death by the hammer

He was MAFIA

"Well, now the fortress is safe" Sazir commented.
Then the entire fortress was flooded after the barricade the miner had created broke from all the pressure and then everyone drowned.
Wasn't that fun?

Dwarf victory! Innocents win! Innocents win!

The two clues were not created by Tailless. He didn't submit his kill until Early Summer and then, it was actually Mid Summer

So I had to make up two easy clues for him.

"Non Player Character #4" Okir Emgashlerteth, was killed after strange-looking dogs and their puppies had pounded him flat before the Hunter could chase them down.

This refers to Taillesskangaru. Simple really, in medieval times, no one would know what a kangaroo looks like, so they were referred as "strange-looking dogs"
That could also mean the animal trainer. The reference to the Hunter being unable to chase them down also leads to Charles Li, who's the Hunter.

Kälán Råshlerom, Peasant was found near the fishery, butchered and arranged into several basic parts. His torn clothes formed the words INNOCENT

This again is a reference to Tailless. Under Tailless' avatar were the words "Back to basics"
So the butchering into basic parts makes a connection. But that's the only reference. Everything else in the clue is a red herring. Fishery, torn clothes and even the peasant being killed.

That's the thing about clues. You've got to read between the lines. I don't know much about you guys, I don't visit OT or NES or those other Forum Games, so I work with local clues kind of thing.
