View Full Version : First Shot at Monarch

Hey guys,

I had played civ III a while back and just got into civ IV a month or so ago, I went 3/4 on Prince and decided I'd give Monarch a shot. I'll probably get in on Monarchist's cookbook soon, but I wanted to try one by myself first.

I feel like I'm moving really slow (partly because I'm not used to epic speed, but Victoria does have a hefty tech lead), so I'm wondering if there's anything I've screwed up in my economy. It's 970 AD, and I think I still have a shot at liberalism (and then probably printing press?) especially with my great scientist coming soon as I research education, but Vicky is way ahead of me on everything else, and I'm only on Joao's level after a lot of trading both of them the same tech. My cothons weren't as helpful as I expected because we're actually on some bizarre continent that stretches across the entire globe split in two pieces by mountains (I proved the world is round without ever building a ship).

I declared on Shaka early on because he took Tartar from the last battered defender after I beat them up and because I didn't want him getting iron where Nodwengu is now, so I was probably at war for about 1000 years, but once I got peace I was only getting an extra 1 gold per turn, so I don't think that was my problem. I bribed Vicky into the war, but she never sent a single unit, did that make it a total waste or might it have hurt her economy back home?

How many cities do you build yourself in a typical game by 1000 BC or 1000 AD? I think I may have delayed too much on that because of the war, Leptis and Kerkouane are pretty recent.

Any advice you have would be great, thanks.

Your tech would be a lot better if you had cottaged over the jungle.

Which in turn would be a lot easier if you had 1.5 workers per city.

Fortunately you still have time to do both.

So I should build some more cities up north and cottage over the whole thing? I actually usually feel like I have too many workers, so I end up just building a bunch of roads, but now that you mention it I could get a few more and just start clearing the northern jungle in preparation for citying there.

I try to save some forests in productiony cities for when I get lumbermills, does that make sense or should I build some more workers and chop those down too?

I can't load your saved games what version of the game are you using - I am using BTS v3.13

I usually have 6-12 cities by 1000 AD. More if my economy could handle it.

Switch your capital from building the statue of zeus to making another worker.

I have civ version 317, save version 301, and build version 3.1.3.1, not sure what that means.

Is there something I should have done with my workers and haven't yet? I'm only working two unimproved tiles, a forest and the iron being mined.

I can also build the parthenon or university of sankore (but I don't have stone or marble), are either of those worthwhile instead of the SoZ or do I just need more jungle cutters?

nix, what mod(s) are you using?

It looks like a lighter version of BUG mod.

I have BUG installed, maybe I accidentally got an older version? Is no one able to see the save?

I can't see it but I'm having "issues" wrt to a game in another thread, so I'm not a good guide for whats right at the moment..
