I know that the bugs with the Religious VC have been well documented. I just feel like ranting about how they ruined my recent game.
I got a Great Plains map (gernerated in game not with map finder) that started me with two marble resources. One of them was on a plains tile one space from the settler allowing me to move and settle on the first turn. The additional :hammers: allowed me to pound out a worker fast as my starting scout explored and popped a few huts. A couple of the villager huts gave me free techs which helped out.
To make a long story short: a combination of lucky huts, the Industrious trait, and the starting marble resource allowed me to get an Oracle slingshot to Theology by about 2800 BC! Unfortunately, even with open borders, none of the AI players would spread the dominant religions to me . No problem, I converted to Christianity and started to build the AP. While it was building, I pounded out Christian missionaries and spread the one true faith to at least one city in each AI civ.
After building the AP I converted to No Religion (since I still had none of the other religions founded by the AI players) to improve my diplomatic relations.
...and then nothing!
The AP went to sleep for over 2,000 years. I ended up quitting in frustration at about 1200 AD. Without bugs I would have had the first AP vote at about 1800 BC. Thanks to the buggy AP voting mechanics I had to replay the game (which I won in 295 AD...not bad).
