I haven't opened/checked out the disc yet, but the disc that came with this months issue says "Colonization- Full Game" on it. I would imagine this means the original. Does anyone know about it? I am mid game in a Civ 4 game and would like to finish it before I try the disc out. Thanks!

Edit: Oh my gosh! I was featured on the front page of the site!!

My guess is 2K Games gave PC Gamer a limited license (this month's CD only) to distribute the original Colonization. Or it could be a free release period like they did with Railroad Tycoon Deluxe when Railroads! came out.

Giving away an older version of an upcoming or recently released game is nothing new. It's a great idea and a good way to get a working older title.

Thanks for the heads-up, magikarcher.

Your welcome, and thank you. That makes perfect sense, and I more thoroughly read the cover of the CD, it is the original full game. So if you want a free copy of Colonization, well not free cause it comes with a magazine, then there you go. :goodjob:

Do you know if it's been reworked to run on newer OS's? Like XP or Vista?

I would imagine it would have been. I haven't checked out the disc yet because I have to download QuickTime 7 or something to see it. I will tell you all I can when I load it.

I have a release version from 1998(can't believe I found it in a store. Was using a pirate copy for years), I use dosbox emulator to run it, if they have not done a port then my advice is to look for an emulator.

dont waste your money on a magazine, freecol is better because u can disband colonies no matter what size and win by taking over the new continent...

...ok...when does this magazine come out?

Right now I'm running the Windows 95 version of Colonization under Vista on the PC I am currently using and it works as well as on my old Windows 95 Pentium.

In the first place I don't like FreeCol. As for abandoning settlements in the original Colonization, you can do that until you build a stockade.

And even with a Stockade, colonies can be abandoned through cheating, therefore allowing some way to delete them.

I hope they allow us to download it. It would be a shame to buy a magazine for one item.

Is PC Gamer a UK magazine? I've got a feeling I've seen it in newsagents. ~£4 for a computer game of proven quality isn't a bad deal.

So does anyone know which version of Colonization is included in the PCG disk? Is it the old DOS version or the graphically-improved Windows 95 (98?) version?

PS: PC Gamer's an American magazine. It has a UK variant, but I don't know how much changes between the two.

The DOS version isn't as buggy as the Windows 95 version.

So is it the UK or US version? And which month?

I ask because we get the UK version (I think) out here in Australia, but I think we might be a month or two behind.

Thanks!

It would be nice if you could download SMAC/SMACX too.

What month's disk was it on? I have the August issue, and I didn't see the original Sid meier's colonization anywhere.

Anything is possible on the internet! you just have to dig deep enough and be so self-centered and self-important that you don't care that you're actually stealing something from someone!

So which issue is this? I LOVE Colonization. I still have the 3 1/2 inch install disks, but my laptop doesn't have that type disk drive. My desktop does (and its installed on it right now). Would it be the issue on newsstands currently?

p.s. I disliked freecol, too.

I am not sure, all I know is that it is the Sep. 08 issue.

I haven't found any information about whether or not the original Colonization will be on the September 8th issue of PC Gamer, but it looks like it would be a good issue to purchase anyway. I don't mean to promote the magazine, but according to this cover shot (http://www.target.com/PC-Gamer-September-2008-Issue/dp/B001CS78MC), it features 365 free games. Whether or not there will be 365 games included on the PC Gamer disk and whether the original Colonization will be one of them is something I simply do not know.

Grrr, I already made a thread about this days ago!

To answer your questions, the disk includes the complete original Colonization, which I have been enjoying heartilly. It runs on XP, no need for DOS here. The magazine itself has no written coverage of the new Colonization.

The 365 games thing is about online flash games. It is also an article, not on the disk.

Edit: Bigfoot, that was posted after mine.

ok, the game installed in like 2 seconds on XP and believe it or not it's the same old Colonization that I last played in 1999.

I've got 3 colonies now as the English, and the Tupi keep raiding Plymouth even though I've got Pocohantis in my Congress.

The main difference between this and freecol is the music and graphics and the amount of mesages you get...i'd say this is my new flavor of the month!

Nope, it can't. As far as we know, EA owns the rights to SMAC - and given the tense relationships between EA and T2, you won't see that in the near future... Besides, SMAC is less interesting than Colonization or Civilization.

You're probably right about an expansion pack called SMAC, but it is of course possible to release something with a different name.

But calling SMAC less interesting than civ/col! What the ... :crazyeye:

SMAC is still my favorite 4X game to date, even if I play Civ4 more these days (just barely, mind you). The 3d terrain (altitude, rockiness and precipitation) is way more complicated than the static civ-series, the social engineering with both positive and negative effects is more interesting, and the unit workshop was a stroke of pure brilliance!

There's a mod out there called Planetfall which looks like the auhtor is trying to create a SMAC game from the Civ 4. It's shaky around the edges, but it's starting to take shape.

As for PC Gamer with Colonization on it, is that the US or UK version?

The 1994 version of Colonization will be made available for a free download, so you don't need to go out and buy this magazine to try it. You can see the main page for details...

Just came back from the store with a copy of PC Gamer. The games and dosbox are installed in a split second. I was playing the windows version for a while and I didn't remembered having to watch through the opening sequence at the european docks before being able to move forward and start the game. Am I crazy?

Edit: switched to minimal resolution. Everything works fine.

Does anyone know whether the version of Colonization on the PC Gamer CD is the DOS version or the Windows 95 version?

It's the Dos version (2.25 version, september 94). It comes with dosbox (dos emulator) that gets installed at the same time as the game.

It's the Dos version....

That's great news! I feel the DOS version of the original Colonization is far superior to the Windows 95 version. The graphics may not be as appealing to some, but the gameplay is superior. (In other words, there are fewer bugs. ;))

The DOSBox version is 0.72 and it ran straight from the install (on my Windows XP system) with no problems.

There are three runtime options - Full screen, Windowed 3X and Windowed. The readme recommends choosing a windowed option if graphic problems are encountered but it runs fine on my LCD monitor in full screen.

This is an excellent adaption of Colonization for modern PC's and I recommend it to anyone who has had trouble running the game previously. The full manual is also available on the disk.
