having played several normal and several epic speed games, i didnt notice a difference, i normally play large maps with 10 civs.

I want MORE time to research techs. Maybe i dont understand the actual difference, unless the patches changed things up a bit? I thought Epic was to have the same building speed with significantly slower researching speed (just not as slow as marathon, i dont want to be in the stone age for 5 hours).

So, i apologize for the newb question but is there something i can set/setting i need to have a better building / teching ratio?

Sure is sad when Castles, and Gunpowder come out close enough together ive never built a castle, and that your spearmen dont get upgraded all the way up to where they are about to be obseleted.

For normal -> epic multiply most things by 1.5
For normal -> marathon multiply most things by 3 (major exception, unit cost is only x2)

Obviously unit movement does not change which is pretty much the point; you get more time to use the units (and other technologies) that you research before they become out-dated.

The only way to disassociate the building cost / technology cost modifiers is to Mod the game yourself or find a mod that offers what you want. Marathon disassociates unit costs and technology cost modifiers (see above) so you could try that.

I don't know of anything that would allow you to build faster but not tech faster other than a better location for your cities. More hammers = faster production. More commerce = faster research.

There is a mod (true epic??) which has that effect... you should get it.

Oh, and I have nothing to do with that mod, so its not an advertisement ;) :P

i'd like that too.

just research on marathon x2 or something while leaving the rest intact.
that way the ancient ages wont fly by and you can actually get some more massive early wars.

my games on marathon, its either an early rush or tech to macemen usually, simply because there is usually plenty of room to REX without having to go to war with swords. would be nice to have filled most of the land and still have just axes and swords.

if anybody has a link to a mod like this or knows where to find it in XML to edit myself I would be most gratefull.

Funny that you mention this, as I created a mod to do exactly that for myself. I changed the research speeds to be twice as long as normal for whatever setting you're playing on (it's meant for marathon, but I also did it for the other speeds).

I also doubled the number of turns in the game, and adjusted the inflation rate to compensate. You still start in 4000BC and end in 2050AD, but the years go by twice as slowly.

I did not change the amount of hammers to build stuff. The idea is to have lots of time to build stuff, and max out your city buildings, before advancing to the next tech.

Building speeds at normal-like speed with research somewhere between epic and marathon. I do want to see the late game, but i want the early-mid game to be more relevant.

Woody, my guess is that you were trying to upload an .XML file. There are only certain type of files that this forum will accept as uploads. Just zip the file, and it will accept anything in a zip format (that isn't over 10mb)

Julian has highlighted the problem here...its not you Woody, its the site which has temp problems. Very easy solution, just upload it to filefront (which is free and needs no registration), then copy the link to here, that will work :)

Okay, easy enough. You can now grab the mod from here:

Just unzip it into your My Documents\My Games\Beyond The Sword\Mods directory, to use it as a mod.

Or if you want to use it all the time, then extract only the individual file called "CIV4GameSpeedInfo.xml" and place it into My Documents\My Games\Beyond The Sword\CustomAssets\xml\gameinfo.

im not at my usual PC right now, but your mod is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon. looking forward to trying it :)

i guess it will take some serious adjustment in expansion as techs that allow overexpansion are even farther away. will be quite a nice change in game mechanics i think.
