View Full Version : leaderhead artwork davidlallen Jul 17, 2008, 10:36 AM You can't have a good post-apocalyptic mod without good leaderhead art. This thread is for discussing and improving the leaderhead art. davidlallen Jul 17, 2008, 10:37 AM I will try to keep the following link current with screenshots of the leaderheads: http://jendaveallen.com/fury-road/leaderheads davidlallen Jul 17, 2008, 10:38 AM Refar has an excellent post with some concepts in this other thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=7042354&postcount=11). davidlallen Jul 17, 2008, 10:39 AM Here is a request I have just put onto the LH request thread: this link (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=7042441&postcount=317) C.Roland Jul 18, 2008, 08:02 PM I'll reply at your MP here David, For the LH, I may help you, but probably not this week. I'm really busy right now, so I can help, but not now. I'm working on totaly new LHs made from scrath with Refar, but this process take a lot of time (modeling from scratch for me, animating from scratch for Refar), it's a lot of time consumed. What I will probably do, is modify some existing LH (but modifying heavily so we won't recognize the guy, and using the same anim isn't a big deal in a mod that doesn't use vanilla leaders). Refar, I will probably need your help for the exports again (I know I'm asking a lot of request :D at the point that we are, a LH export shouldn't be to annoying for you :D) If you have some concept picture meanwhile, you can post it here. bernie14 Jul 18, 2008, 08:47 PM i cant model right now, but i would be very happy to work on some textures :) davidlallen Jul 18, 2008, 08:59 PM i cant model right now, but i would be very happy to work on some textures :) Want to try taking spadines (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=9047) and making his armor and helmet rusty, worn and beat up instead of shiny? Maybe same idea for hermes (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=9975)? davidlallen Jul 18, 2008, 09:21 PM If you have some concept picture meanwhile, you can post it here. Super! I am not sure I am very effective at finding concept art, but I used images.google.com with terms like "punk" "mohawk" "cyberpunk" "post-apocalyptic" and found things like this: http://gallery.photo.net/photo/5136522-lg.jpg http://www.smh.com.au/ffximage/2007/04/09/218123468_narrowweb__300x424,0.jpg http://chicagoist.com/attachments/Margaret%20Lyons/2007_12_31.mrt.jpg http://www.colourlovers.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/06/glare_and_purple_hair.jpg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Wave_Gotik_Treffen_2007.jpg seZereth had suggested deviantart.com; searching there in "3d characters" gave some useful images like these: http://oceandreamzzz.deviantart.com/art/all-or-nothing-4-92120106 http://vaia.deviantart.com/art/Punk-Pinups-Marigold-92117168 http://zero-the-fool.deviantart.com/art/The-Streets-89298808 http://rehula.deviantart.com/art/Luigi-Sinister-3-86016700 http://bstart.deviantart.com/art/Cyberpunk-No1-85080783 http://painsplayground.deviantart.com/art/Attitude-72265607 In the very first version of Fury Road, in the distant past (May :-) I had LH art which was screenshots borrowed from Fallout Tactics. This is a very nicely themed, consistent set of art which fits my image. But, it is two color, 75x64 pixel art for the most part -- tiny, and lores. Here is a zip of these jpgs: http://jendaveallen.com/fury-road/fot-concept.zip Anything that comes out of this project will be great! I can place the characters onto backgrounds and do the required xml/screenshot work, but I have no ability at actual "art". Refar Jul 19, 2008, 06:19 AM Refar, I will probably need your help for the exports again (I know I'm asking a lot of request :D at the point that we are, a LH export shouldn't be to annoying for you :D) Sure, i was planing to pin shaders on all the LH's, once they are decided to be definitely in the mod anyway. Refar Jul 20, 2008, 03:30 PM I got the "Helmet Guy" to a point where i will call him done. Once David gave him a name, i will upload him to the database as well, maybe someone else has a use for it. Gave him one of those "animated sky" backgrounds. Not sure waht exactly the junk in the BG is - i looked for ruined motel or biker shop pictures, and this looked wrecked enought to be post-apocalyptic. http://img381.imageshack.us/img381/3420/bikerlhprewievja9.jpg Edit: The file is in the Database now (>>> http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=10099), so i took it out here. Polycrates Jul 20, 2008, 03:57 PM Oh hell yes Looks incredible, man! davidlallen Jul 20, 2008, 05:51 PM That is great! I will have to think of a cooler name. I want to keep "ironhead" for somebody who looks like he is wearing a big iron thing on his head. The bike helmet is great but not "iron". I would use him to replace Peter, among my current leaderhead names, but that is not very memorable. BTW, I love the background too. I have searched, and found a few good backgrounds as you can see in the current leaderhead page, but I am sure there are more, better ones too. If you have found some, send them along too, and they will find a good home. The_Coyote Jul 20, 2008, 07:46 PM looks really great Refar :) how about "Sgt. Moonland" as name (the name itself could be better, but imo a military rank could fit Edit: perhaps only "The Sergeant" or something similar) Wolfshanze Jul 20, 2008, 07:48 PM Well there's always "Major Payne" or "Corporal Punishment". Refar Jul 21, 2008, 02:53 AM "Peter" is actually fine by me. Everything that fits your concept. Just did not want to upload him as "Guy with Helmet". Refar Jul 22, 2008, 01:33 AM I removed the hat from Amras Anne Bonny and changed the face shape a bit and switched animations, to make her look less Boudica. The skin is a bit dark, but with all the desert there i think it's ok. Kept Davids Aelwyn BG. http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads/aelwyn_picture_rC2.jpg http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=10100 bernie14 Jul 24, 2008, 07:02 PM this is a WIP.... thanks to arnor, this is spadines with burebista's cap....i am attempting to "rip up" the armour (using an alpha channel) and making a ty-dye like ripped up shirt...wish me luck.. comments welcome... davidlallen Jul 24, 2008, 07:05 PM this is a WIP.... thanks to arnor, this is spadines with burebista's cap....i am attempting to "rip up" the armour (using an alpha channel) and making a ty-dye like ripped up shirt...wish me luck.. comments welcome... Cool! I had just this minute sent you a PM asking if you were interested, obviously you were! I think getting the armor to look beat-up is more important than getting fancy colors on the shirt. EDIT: seZereth has a good technique of adding dirt and rust, this may be easier than alpha-out part of the chainmail. bernie14 Jul 24, 2008, 08:15 PM OK! on the left, some rusty scale, on the right, some snakey scale, what do u think? also, i could change the colors on the cap, the t-shirt, let me know what u would like on the wrist braces...i could make them metal, or i could make the "sports-type" wrist bands (terry cloth-like)?...would u like a logo on the cap?.... davidlallen Jul 24, 2008, 09:13 PM The mail on the left looks more rusted, so I pick that one. No need for a logo on the cap, I like it the way it is. Metal wrist braces sounds cool, but not too shiny. I'm not sure what anims you were planning. Among the 16 I have, there are a lot of Alexander's and a few other duplicates. I haven't made notes about which is which, but if you download the LH pack (see first post in Welcome thread) you could probably recognize them. I'd prefer to use a set of anims that isn't already in use if possible. Thanks for your work so far! bernie14 Jul 25, 2008, 02:26 AM ok, added some tribal tattoos and several alternatives on the wrist bands/braces....about the animations, sorry but all i can do now is textures :( .... i cant even check the model ingame :(:( .... so let me know about the wrist bands and then i will leave the rest up to u :) Refar Jul 25, 2008, 04:06 AM Looks very cool. That hat adds a lot to the "Survivor Feeiling" I can take a look at the anims once you are done with the rextures. davidlallen Jul 25, 2008, 09:24 AM Fantastic! I vote for the green bracers on the left, and one of the narrow tattoos, like the left guy's, left arm. (Possibly all three left arms are the same tattoo?) Which set of anims is this based on today? bernie14 Jul 25, 2008, 12:23 PM thanks, Refar, davidlallen, i will touch up the speculars and then its all yours... this is totally based on Arnor's baby, spadines, so i am pretty sure the animations are Gilgamesh davidlallen Jul 25, 2008, 12:27 PM @refar: Gilgamesh and Alexander seem to be very popular anims, so I request if it's possible, to reanim onto something more obscure. Refar Jul 25, 2008, 01:41 PM I will have to look first, but Gilgamehs is working on a lot of anims (And vice versa - probably is why you see those anims a lot) so there is a good chance i can switch them. bernie14 Jul 25, 2008, 04:28 PM ok, here's the LH....i have included all the changed art and nif file. the main nif i renamed "pozzer.nif", the BG is still "Gilgamesh_Backgrnd.nif", but the art is different....the pic is NOT an in game pic, it is a composite from some nifskope captures....if some one could test him in-game and let me know if the speculars look ok?.....any additional files needed, go directly to Arnor's spadines (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=9047) :) davidlallen Jul 25, 2008, 04:40 PM Thanks! It will go right into the game tonight. I love the BG. Even though it is a big pixel count, it is very grainy. Is there a higher res version available? Maybe it is too late now, but on a real background, the flatness of the shirt sleeves is more obvious. I'm no artist, but is it possible to put more of a cloth texture there? davidlallen Jul 25, 2008, 04:45 PM More LH concepts: * We can't have a Road Warrior type game without a mohawk. I was thinking of Debbie. She has the Catherine "toss hair and turn" animation, so you get a good view of the front and back of her head. * I think refar has somewhere on his list (a huge list!) to make a new ironhead, with a big hockey mask or similar. Like Humongous from RW. * No idea if it's possible, probably not, but a cowled monk? Concept art images.google.com "monk cowl medieval". I have a name, "Children of the Fire", which would be fanatical monk types. Others? Refar Jul 25, 2008, 04:48 PM The guy looks cool Bernie :) I will pin shaders on it, when looking for animations. This might make the shirt sleeves look a bit better too. bernie14 Jul 25, 2008, 05:10 PM The guy looks cool Bernie :) I will pin shaders on it, when looking for animations. This might make the shirt sleeves look a bit better too. i did a litttle work with the specular work, so u may try it as is first :) about the background, of course that is optional and up to u :) Refar Jul 25, 2008, 06:56 PM Here's a LH animation compartibility index i compiled a while ago. (I had removed it from the original post in the LH animations thread, after my attachment quota got full, as it had no downloads.) The easiest thing would be to look for the Green combinations. Everything else will require at least some editing with NifScope or a 3d software. Also note, that the index goes to unmodified LH's. In most cases a LH based upon Gilgamesh will work the same as the original Gilgamesh, but there might be exceptions. davidlallen Jul 25, 2008, 07:07 PM My goodness, that table has 2500 entries! Did some group of people sit for weeks and try all the rerig combinations manually? I will try a couple sticking to the "Y" entries, to reduce duplications of anims among my LH. Please don't spend any time rerigging the new stein, let me try my luck. davidlallen Jul 25, 2008, 08:40 PM @bernie14: here is what the new spadines looks like in-game. The specularity seems ok, but I am a little concerned by transparency and brightness of the shoulder pads. It seems that the top edge of the chainmail is visible through the shoulder pads. Is that something which you could tune up? 183883 bernie14 Jul 25, 2008, 11:57 PM ok, try this gloss.dds file for the glossy shoulder pads...as for the chainmail, no, cant do much about it, since i would have to modify the mesh in blender ....; sorry, i tried to make it "disappear" with alpha channel but did not work :(.... Refar Jul 26, 2008, 03:31 AM My goodness, that table has 2500 entries! Did some group of people sit for weeks and try all the rerig combinations manually? I will try a couple sticking to the "Y" entries, to reduce duplications of anims among my LH. Please don't spend any time rerigging the new stein, let me try my luck. It got collected over a very long time. Ekmek and a few others contributed some entries but the most of them i tried myself when working on a LH where it was relevant. At some point where it was near full decided to fill out the blanks. Overall i think it was well worth it - otherwise i would need to start trying on each LH i am working... Also had a batch-script to do the renaming, speeding up the experiments. Wish i knew where i put it. C.Roland Aug 01, 2008, 03:23 PM I began something. Didn't really have something specefic planned, so I began this girl that could probably be used. What do you think of her ? She's far from complete, it's only a rough start. http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/160/apogirlus9.th.jpg (http://img221.imageshack.us/my.php?image=apogirlus9.jpg) davidlallen Aug 01, 2008, 04:59 PM A new female leaderhead! That will be spectacular. One of the concepts I had, but dropped due to lack of art, was a tough middle aged woman who believes in democracy. Not naive, though. Maybe a waitress or housewife before the apocalypse, but went through a transformation to become a real leader. Kind of like Sarah Connor from Terminator I to Terminator II, only without the insanity part from knowing that the apocalypse was coming. So, tough, middle aged, good leader. countjackula Aug 02, 2008, 12:17 PM Sew some leather padding onto that turtleneck sweater's shoulders and she's ready to protect the village with her rifle. Give her a pitchfork and some flannel and you know she's ready to kick your arse. Either way, what village couldn't use a tough broad like this? That's a really nice looking model base. Good job! The idea of a matriarch seems extra plausible in a tough, harsh environment like this. We all know about a mothers fierce protective instincts. You could even simply call her "Mother". Trait-wise Agressive/Defensive seems appropriate but not knowing all the leaders' traits offhand perhaps you already have this combo. This would be an opportunity to make a new combo that Fury Road doesn't have yet. davidlallen Aug 02, 2008, 01:13 PM Once we get good background text for all the 14 leaders, I will probably go back through and reorganize who has which trait. There is a "chicken and egg" situation with the LH artwork, the background text, and the traits. Basically, any good concept which comes in will get used, pushing out any weaker ones. C.Roland Sep 09, 2008, 09:13 AM Ok, I know it have been a while since I posted the first LH screen, but I wanted to finish it for this week. The model is done, I just need to sculpt the normal map and texture it. The suclpt was almost done, but Zbrush crashed on save (yeah, this program has this annoying flaw that it crashes on save) and since I didn't made any backup and I saved over the same file over and over (and the crash made the file unopenable), I lost all my sculpt. This will delay (again) the production of the LH, I'm sorry, next time, I'll save some backup. I thought I could finish it today (and send it to Refar for him to add shaders), but I won't because of this crash. I'll try to make it for later this week. davidlallen Sep 09, 2008, 09:45 AM Oh no! Thanks for the update, I am glad that project is still active. GeoModder Sep 18, 2008, 08:47 AM Probably not, but is this (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=9346) leaderhead perhaps of use in the mod? I know he doesn't like anarchistic and such, but perhaps as leader of an enclave of surviving mariners? I know that means backtexting one of the civs... davidlallen Sep 18, 2008, 10:19 AM Thanks for the suggestion, but that is very similar to the leaderhead for Viktor, as shown in the leaderhead summary at this link (http://jendaveallen.com/fury-road/leaderheads). In fact it may even be the same hat, reskinned somewhere along the line. Refar Sep 18, 2008, 01:57 PM It's probably indeed the same hat, there is only one hat like this - on Stalin - so it gets used quite a lot... But then again....military hats are quite similar. The marine's face is very different and he's based on another LH (meaning different anims) so i think they would look different enought... The hat could be ripped of i guess... I somehow don't like his babyface tho. Maybe he's something to remeber of the second round of LH's for each civ. GeoModder Sep 18, 2008, 03:19 PM Well, there's always an older military type in the database. Think Churchill with a WWII general helmet on his head, in case you want an old-fashioned looking second leader. ;) C.Roland Sep 22, 2008, 01:56 PM Here is two screen of the new leader sculpted and textured in Zbrush (HighRes version) with two different material. I still have to fix some texture issues, there is some blond in the skin and some white and pink in the hair that I will have to fix in photoshop (Polypaintings have its flaws) before to send it to Refar. After, it will be the same process that we're used to Refar, I'll generate a Normalmap and send you the DIFF,NRML map and a nif to import. http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/4061/preview1oy2.th.jpg (http://img136.imageshack.us/my.php?image=preview1oy2.jpg)http://img136.imageshack.us/images/thpix.gif (http://g.imageshack.us/thpix.php) http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/9660/preview2uo2.th.jpg (http://img136.imageshack.us/my.php?image=preview2uo2.jpg)http://img136.imageshack.us/images/thpix.gif (http://g.imageshack.us/thpix.php) So waht do you think ? GeoModder Sep 22, 2008, 03:55 PM That's quite a muscled babe you got there. :scared: davidlallen Sep 23, 2008, 11:13 AM I had some trouble displaying the pictures, but I finally got them to display. I guess the site is very touchy in displaying pictures hosted externally. Others have reported similar trouble displaying my pictures when I host them externally. Anyway, I got them. Looks great! Will it hook up to one of the existing LH animations, or will it require new ones? (Or did you make new ones?)
